The Panasonic Toughbook 55 is an exception and is new but you are paying through the nose for that one. It's a modular laptop like out of an old sci-fi movie. If they made that a $1,500 laptop I think they'd get more traction with consumers who are kind of tech-savvy and who like to do basic upgrades to their computers, but maybe don't like completely taking apart the whole thing.

I recently purchased a T60 for about $50 US dollars, core duo T2400, ATI X1300 chip, 2GB RAM, 1400*1050 non IPS screen. Some minor issues bue the machine is in very good shape. It has win10 installed and works surprisedly well! But I bought it primally for retro gaming and i plan to install WinXP instead. Awesome machine!!

I just got one of these last month and I love it. Came with a single core x86 processor and I did my first ever cpu upgrade to give it a t7400 core 2 duo. I bought a battery for it, slapped a linux distro on there, and it's quickly becoming my favorite computer. On the other hand, it has led me to buy loads of ancient thinkpads since then so I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it lol. Thinkpad addiction is a real problem, and it's definitely a problem I currently face haha.

The computer came with Windows 10 installed on it, but I removed it since it can't handle the speed of that OS. ArcaOS is the modern version of OS/2 and I loved that OS and had computers with it on them.

I like old thinkpads, but thinkpad t60 belongs in a museum unfortunately. If I had to use old thinkpad, oldest I would go is t61 which is capable of 8GB of ram. T60 with only 3GB is too limiting today, not to mention hassle of upgrading core duo that most t60 comes with to core2 duo t7200 or better.

I bought my reconditioned IBM T60 ThinkPad in 2011 and still use it every day. Upgraded the Operating System from Windows XP to 32-bit Windows 7 Professional when Microsoft stopped supporting XP. Since then upgraded the memory with 1GB + 2GB DDR2-667 SODIMM in 2 slots. Purchased a new T60 series Lithium ion battery replacement, new IBM Lenovo palmrest, new V Series SATA SSD 120GB ATA Disk Drive and a pristine replacement DVD/CD-ROM drive. I have just ordered a used original ThinkPad T60 Lid top cover when it sustained a crack on the hinges. I wouldn't swap my IBM ThinkPad T60 for any other Lenovo laptop on the market even if the 1.83GHz Intel(R) CPU 2400 processor is a little slow.

Ah that keyboard....dreamy. In my personal opinion the last thinkpads were the T420/T430 and the 15 inch models. That being said, from a professional perspective the T420 is above the next models simply because it was the last model featuring the true and only thinkpad keyboard. I hate the new keyboards !!!!

This is a really nice video. A friend gave me a ThinkPad T60 a few months back, but it had no power supply, no hard drive, and no screws holding it together. I don't know how he came by it, or whether he caused all this damage himself (because he is a tinkerer), but after a recent run-in with the really delightful keyboard on an old Compaq I was forced to recycle, I thought, "hm, I should get that ThinkPad working; I bet it would be great for typing." I opened it up and while it isn't quite as good as that Compaq's keyboard, it's still miles better than any keyboard on any laptop being sold today. So I got on AliExpress and ordered the stuff I needed to get it going. But now I've got to wait. And I got to enjoy your video and excite my anticipation a little bit. Thank you.

My daily driver is a T60 with no Lenovo markings in it, just IBM. I've had it for....I don't know, more than 10 years, and I use it at least 8 hours a day. Most days more. Couple of years ago, I think it was when win7 lost support, I bought a new battery, and ssd for it, and switched it over to Zorin OS. That was the last time I opened it for anything. I'm watching this video, and typing this on it. It's gotten a lot of wear through the years, and is starting to look like something the cat dragged in, but I love it, and will use it until the end. Only problem is, I think my end will come before the laptop's end.

Our friends collected number of Thinkpads viz, T400, 410, 420, 430, 440 and later line all are very good reliable machines. We definitely would like to include T60 in the collection regardless of its capabilities.

I have an even older R51 and I love it. I need to get the battery replaced and maybe max out the ram but with Antix linux running on it I have yet to run into any problems. I was looking at a T43p because they had workstation level video cards which would be helpful for photo and video work. One thing that I find amusing and a bit sad is the R51 has a better display 14 years later then my much newer Lenovo Thinkpad E545. Both the R and E series were marketed as budget and small business lines. The difference in quality speaks volumes. My Lenovo E545 is a better made mid range consumer laptop whereas the R series was a proper work machine. I actually which Lenovo would release an updated R series with AMD APUs like they use in the Edge series. And I really wish they would bring back the proper IBM keyboard. That was one of their longtime best selling feature. When you spend alot of time working on your computer they quality of the keyboard really matters.

We are still using ours daily with the latest patches of Window 10! 3 GB ram installed, T2700 processors and 500GB HDD's. WiFi has also been updated to wireless-n spec and added USB 3 ports and SD Card readers to the PCMCIA and cardbus slots. HDD in Ultrabays have also been removed and we now enjoy DVDRW Multidrives instead. For work, these are perfect. Robust and take all knocks and spillages plus all parts are still readily available and can be changed easily. We still love them and will only change them will forced to although we will probably look into alternative operating systems if we do. :-)

Danke schön, herr panorama for the video! I have several questions.
    1. Do you have a ballpark for how many hours your battery lasts?
    2. In day to day use: how does it feel? In Linux? In win7?
    3. Which distro would would you recommend? I only have limited experience in ubuntu.
    4. What’s a good price for these nowadays?

    • @panoramacircle3281
      @panoramacircle3281  5 років тому +1

I would say 2-4 hours battery. It does feel fine for smaller office programs under Win7 and basic internet browsing. Linux is changing so fast, so you should try Ubuntu first and see how it works for you (depends greatly on the specific gpu and its drivers under Linux). I would pay maybe 80-100€ for a basic machine but this depends on the specification: RAM, CPU, GPU, SSD, display resolution, wear, etc. Remember that this is now an old machine but nobody is making laptops like that anymore.

Put a 128GB SSD in it and 4 GB Ram (don't think it uses all the ram but had some I salvaged from an old HP) and the thing runs amazingly even on Windows 10 pro. My 14.1" T60 is, as expected, not as wide as my 15" T520. But surprisingly the T60 is a bit longer than the T520. Or maybe that should come as no surprise, the T60 being a 4:3 laptop vs 16:9 for the T520.
As for the maker, it had been Lenovo for a few years by then, and when IBM finally sold the Thinkpad brand, they also sold the IBM name to Lenovo to use during the transitional period. So I'd consider all T60s as Lenovo laptops, even those with IBM branding.
