I never thought I would ever quote or paraphrase Nick Wright, but here we go: NBA players get paid a lot, because the NBA is a great tv product. You can be the best CURLING team in the world, by far - you won't get paid as much as an NBA team. ...mostly shooting threes, that is NOT a good tv product. And somebody said, a few days ago: in terms of winning, there is no real reason why a team shouldn't start shooting threes ONLY. So: players, coaches and GMs shouldn't only think in terms of winning. They should keep an eye on the product, or they will lose a lot of money. Remember when Philly was one of the most-watched teams, because of AI, without ever winning a title? Today, I prefer watching Ja Morant over a Boston game. (no offense against Boston's quality, they are great) The only guy who can SELL threes to the crowd, imo, is Steph...
For now, yes. Because he’s still too skinny to camp out on the paint on both sides of the court for an 82-game season without risking injury. When his body matures more and his strength increases, then he can mesh his perimeter and post game equally.
@@OutsideTheNBAChannel it was highly annoying at the start of the season as so many possessions died with a missed three. I can't help but scream at the 7'5" guy not dominating inside by taking entire posessions without going inside the arc. That has passed and as long as he makes a respectable number it's great, which he has been for the last 8-9 games. The first ten or so games, not so much. He has free reign to shoot, which means everyone in the Spurs org knows he has the ability to make them at a high clip. Whatever rust or tiredness he had seems to have vanished so yes, keep on with it. But please don't shoot yourself in the foot if they aren't falling. Get rolling with the inside game and let that feed your confidence for the outside game
People that are mad about him shooting so many threes don’t understand that’s been the plan the whole time. It is gonna pay true dividends as it will open his game up so much. Good move by the spurs.
His release is so high if he can release the ball relative fast and at a good percent it’s basically going to force pressure every time and since he can dribble/pumpfake off the closeout for a clear lane. I don’t actually know what the plan by the league would be. It’s looking like the way to stop him current is supper physical play denying the ball with his high center of gravity but even that is tough cause he mismatches bigs on the 3 and wings in the post the spurs can just call for an iso.
Let them hate. Dude is so good they stopped remembering he is only 20 and still building his future self. They all think Welby 2024 version is his peak. Reality is the team is building and they take this opportunity to also build up Welby's game, but his current way of playing is most likely not be how he will eventually play at his prime
did you see last game ?? one pump fake on the 3 , two defenders were gooooone in the air .... easy drive and point after him knocking those 3 in makes people respect the jumper which open a huge ball park for him and the team to exploit
It’s working. Today he pump faked from the 3 point line and had two defenders jump! He then drove past them. He also posted up a lot despite still knocking down 5 threes!
I'm pretty much a casual, but by the last highlights I've seen it seems he has a good amount of creative resources like when he's spinning or faking moves. he's pretty quick-minded and it helps. But yeah we'll see when he gets muscular if he keeps that style. His size will remain, at any rate, an obvious plus below the basket.
Truth be told, I was one of those frustrated fans when he wasn't making his 3s. But over the last 10 games, I understand why they gave him the green light to shoot as many 3s as he can. We are now seeing teams respecting his perimeter shooting and it has opened up the game for him. At the end of the day, it is easy to forget that he is just 20 years old. I'd rather see the Spurs develop him into a 7'4 Kevin Durant than just be another Yao Ming.
@@pete1381 Yeah, that's quite logical; he's in his second year, and still learning. And you can really get the feel for your shot selection only through real confrontations, not in training. People tend to forget that this is far from a contender team, they're still building and figuring things out, you don't get from bottom tier to 1st seed in the blink of en eye.
That, plus the way he’s playing now, makes me think the spurs coaching staff might be trying to keep him from getting too physical in the paint, which could help him avoid injuries
What you explained is exactky showed in the last Spurs Kings game. Because he is now a threat every where on the court, he attracts the attention even more. That leads to wide open shots for his team mates. The result : 30 points triple double. You can see plays where he attracts 4 defenders at the same time and Wemby has the vison to take avantage of that
Victor has always displayed good touch throughout his career, so it makes sense for him to find out just how effective he can be as an outside shooter. If you look at his free throw percentages, even going back to his time in Europe, he has hovered around 80% from the line. If that touch can translate to even 36-37% from 3PT range, it will allow him to leverage his unique agility and coordination as a big against defenses. My personal curiosity is him possibly attempting to add the sky hook to his repertoire. He might be the only player with the size, touch and coordination since Kareem for that shot to actually make sense.
Spurs probably want him to develop his perimeter game this early on in his career to reduce his paint workload FOR NOW. This dude does a lot on both sides of the court and we often hear players talk about how hard it is to make significant efforts on both sides of the court without getting injured that’s why there’s not a lot of two-way players in the league. Wemby already roams around all-over the paint on the defensive side of the court. I think the Spurs making him more as a perimeter player on the offensive side of the court this year is because they want to protect him from the risk of injuries. He’s still very young and very skinny at this point. Wemby camping out on the paint on both sides of the court for an 82-game season might risk him to unwanted injuries especially in just their year 2 of rebuild with him. Also, I think the Spurs are also thinking ahead. Wemby having a jumper is less wear-and-tear to his knees in the long run. If he becomes more consistent with his shots, it will also open up the space more for his teammates and create more opportunities for them especially when he’s getting double-teamed. I think the Spurs are being very smart. It’s not like they’re seriously contending for a title this year anyway so why not continue to develop their young guys. During their media day, they were asked about their goals this season and most of them answered “to get more wins”. I think a play-in is an attainable goal for them this season. They need to at least experience a post-season game, but the West is so tough. Hopefully, they get there tho.

Real Spurs Fan Here. The Wemby plan is long term not win now. Work on every area to be overall great. 2 to 3 years will be the real show for us Go Spurs Go. Great video What instrumental is that playing in the background
The whole thing with Wemby when he got drafted was that he’s a 7’5” monster who will dominate on defense and in the paint but can also shoot the 3 ball and play-make almost like a PG. This has always been the plan. It’s gonna be some short term growing pains while he gets used to shooting more 3s but the payoff will be huge once he reaches his prime.
1. It's hard to block his sight from the 3. 2. He can chuck 3s, and reserve his energy for defense 3. He needs to be double team in the paint, ALWAYS. Adding 3 point shooting adds another headache because they need to double team eventually from the 3 point-line Only AD has the mobility and strength that can somewhat stop him.
The Spurs recognize the potential of Wemby, and they are maximizing his skill set, they brought in CP3, they are encouraging Wemby to shoot the 3, this kid is gonna remake the history books, and the Spurs organization will support him all the way.
His body isnt ready to go in he paint yet. Once he puts on some muscle, gets stonger....he will just need a few post up moves and he will be absolutely dominant. Spurs are doing the right thing by letting him jack up as many outside shots as he wants and he will improve as the season progresses.
They're trying to build Wemby's muscle up (not that he needs to look like Giannis) so he becomes more prevalent in the paint, but in the meantime, he'll be able to develop his shot. The Spurs are trying to develop his entire game, and clearly know what they are doing. That all being said, the man is still a crazy defender, and people seem to completely neglect this when criticizing him.
I think developing this aspect of the game will make him impossible to defend when he bulk up but also will reduce his chances of injuries. We all know that being 100% of the time in the paint is hard on the body and having a reliable perimeter game will allow reduce injury chances especially in reg season.
I just like that there's a focus and 'simplification' attempt in his offensive development - in this case the outside shot. He's so versatile he can do anything / everything and it can be a disservice to his development.
Another thing maybe is that they want to limit his time in the paint against other bigs to reduce chances of injury as he as not bulked up enough yet. SO he develops his outside game while trying to avoid too much contact inside
I personally would like the Spurs to have another 7 footer next to Victor at the pf spot, someone who could especially help out Wemby on defense so he's not doing everything to the point where he gets tired out too fast. Sochan is fine at that position and is a good defender, but I think sliding him to sf would be ok. The Spurs could have had a player like that in Alex Sarr from the draft. I would have called up Washington trying to work out a trade for the second pick, could have easily included pick 8 since we didn't use it. His defense is good, his offensive game needs work but isn't completely broken. Having those 2 on the court together would be scary
On top of everything mentioned in this video, Wemby playing more in the perimeter also means less wear and tear on his body, ie probably fewer injuries and a longer career. Even if his perimeter game never reaches top-tier level, it’s still smart to avoid sending him to the paint for 70 regular season games a year. Might as well keep his paint-heavy game for at most half the regular season games… and the playoffs.
Like someone has already mentioned in the comments, it wasnt only the inconsistency. He was taking bad shots. Improving decision making is something that elevates his game the most. I know he can shoot the 3, but choose the right moment and its ok.
By adding the number of 3p attempts, it can open up so much for the Spurs offense. Victor's up-fake is going to be his signature move when it's all said and done. Because his hands are so big, that up-fake is just his natural shooting motion that he stops before releasing the ball when he notices a defender closing out. Now defenders have to pick between having a guy glued to Victor at all times (to try and stop the entry pass on those catch and shoot 3s), or leaving a help defender in the paint. If they go with the former, Victor is a good passer who's going to find a cutter, if you leave the guy in paint and Victor's 3p shot keeps developing, Victor may very well end up with more rings than Duncan....
I have no problem with Wemby shooting 3s. However, they need another quality big in the paint to really take advantage of that. Then the defense has to commit to him. Send a guard, Wemby will just shoot over him. Send a big, pass inside. Can you imagine if Chet and Wemby were on the same team? That would be insane.
I believe that Coach Pop is currently establishing wemby as a 3pt threat so that when the time comes he can start working in the paint with a lot more space because the opponent is too afraid to let him shoot
Sky is the limit, post game would be interesting to watch, be he need to be able to shoot threes and he likes it. The passing aspect is very nice, he s serving the team. He must build resistance in his body to last.
Wemby have the frame of KD. So it's a no brainer he's gonna play like KD. No way in hell he's gonna win a battle of strength in the post for 30minutes a night. That's just asking to get hurt. Even as jacked as giannis is, he isn't moving the true centers in the post. And when teams sag off him and build a wall he's gonna struggle.
it is quite simple really, a 5 that can reliably shoot 3s as a medium to high volume while playing good defense and protecting the rim is one of the best asset you can have in the modern nba. I don't really like seing Wemby shoot so many 3s either but if that help hime pass the threshold of 40% on 3s I will take it. It will also help him to cause some doubt in the opposing defence to drive to the basket if they take his shooting seriously
I am not against what the Spurs are doing with Wemby, I know he is in good hands with the Spurs. In my opinion Wemby’s biggest advantage is playing in the paint. Height is might.
Nobody points out this obvious strategic advantage: Wemby shooting deep 3's lets the DPOY quickly get back on defense also. Also he conserves a ton of energy for later in the game when it matters the most. Running from paint-to-paint every play is difficult with his frame, and he tires quickly.
Keep him out of the paint when you can for now, can't risk him getting beaten up as he slowly and cleverly adds the bulk. The endgame Wemby is possibly the greatest talent ever
People are so stupid first off let's talk about KD Wemby the greek freak & shooting. KD never lifts to put on weight cuz he doesn't want his shooting to be altered his words. Giannis was a better shooter before he put on that 40 pounds of muscle. And than became the Greek Freak. Yet people are expecting skinny Wemby to play like todays Giannins. My point being body type matters. Imposing your will on the court is not the same. Just cuz you're tall compared to being heavy. The thing is Wemby can actually shoot & has the potential to get better at it. And what do we always say about the Greek freak. If he could shoot threes he'll be unstoppable. So imagine what that would open for the game of Wemby. Plus he has pretty decent handles & play making skills to complete it. And his major height advantage with having a three-ball. All that together would be a lot to try & stop. Especially if it all gelled well & was perfected. In usage so he could be consistent with it as a collective game. This is him developing the dude is young. Media let that young buck sharpen his tools & get better. The thing is when you have a player like that. Who can do so much & holds so much potential plus is young. They'll have a whole lot to figure out. Cuz the more you can do the tougher it is. For in a since you get in your own way when you play. Often making the wrong moves cuz there's so much to think about from what you can do in true. With all that being said the guy is playing pretty good all things considered.
Long story short who does his body type resemble more the Greek freak or KD. Clearly KD so of course he's going to play more that way. Though I know he has more height to his advantage in comparison. But KD can shoot over anybody so imagine Wemby. Clearly this is a better usage of him. So long as it doesn't become obsessive. For he ain't gonna be the shooter KD is. He's more useful on defense with his height than offense. Only cuz once again there's no makeup for mass. See on defense he could just time things & react. But on offense he has to assert himself. Timing and reaction still are a thing on that side of the ball just not as much. When you consider his height being used as a strength. Meaning he would have to take that skinny fram & force his will more. Body type matters being tall and being heavy aren't the same thing. You can't oppose your will just because you're tall. As easily as you can if you're heavy it'll still take a sense of finesse over dominance. All this should be common sense really honestly.
Well, the problem with pretending Wemby to play like Giannis is that he just doesn't have Giannis' muscle yet. Constantly banging with opposing bigs for position in the post isn't as simple. Why would the Spurs make him wear himself out so easily? The Spurs are not aiming for the championship this year, and it makes way more sense to use the early years of Wembanyama to develop his tools for when the Spurs actually become a contender. Best case scenario for the team would be to contend on Wemby's year 4 or 5. So there's still another 3 years of development ahead for Wembanyama.
I'm glad somebody gets it. Work on 3s while he builds up strength. After he's stronger, post game work. All the while working on reducing turnovers and improving his handles. The Spurs are trying to build a 2 way demon who can score on all 3 levels and defend basically anyone. They are telling him to shoot so much because he needs the in game reps. Let my Spurs cook goddammit!

I konda want the spurs to get another high end pick. If they can get 3 lottery guys this year i think it sets them up quite well
Wemby have the frame of KD.
Damn, that really does fly under the radar, good point 🤝
Keep him out of the paint when you can for now, can't risk him getting beaten up as he slowly and cleverly adds the bulk. The endgame Wemby is possibly the greatest talent ever
Wemby just dropped a triple double. I don’t wanna hear that bum KP speak on spurs basketball ever again
Sup fellow Layne/Spurs fan 😄
Wemby developing guard skills at this rate means he will develop a post game fast too when he puts on weight. Scary for the rest of the NBA.
It's fun to see him get this green light considering how limited he was in Europe
1:03 Hi, on wich site did you find the board of the Top 3 points atemps, please?
It’s on ESPN
@@dantrellmanning8076 Thanks
Oh man. Let all hell breaks loose in Minnesota and us getting ANT... MAN!!!
nah bro 40+% from 3 at over 7 foot is crazy
Nah bro. Dribbling makes him vulnerable to steals by scrappy small players. He should learn to release the ball high, with shots like sky hooks or alley hoops.
I agreed with Perk but that's why I sit on my couch in my house and not on an NBA bench or office
Área 51
My fav nickname for a duo
My problem with Perkins is he wants Wemby plays like a normal dominant central or the french guy is a alien
Wemby is not going to take any advice from Perk. lmao
Trust the process.
Well, maybe this is the true "trust the process." XD
it also lower the risk for wemby to get injuries the spurs know what they are doing
This is why i want all 5 players to be able to space rhe floor. There is no excuse whatsoever.
Men? Thats not even a question, he's an alien he can do both. Outside and inside thats not a problem
The league is so cooked.
Lebron was always a gifted playmaker and he’s still whatever in the post
This is very important in order to let in rest in the outside, then he will not need that great imprivement to is athetism
Perk never had a brain even when he was playing.
As a general rule, you should do the exact opposite of whatever Perkins or Gilbert Arenas say about basketball 😂😂😂
so you basically say : trust the process ? 😉
wembang is wide open 150% of the time, no plan is needed
Everyone wants him to play like traditional big men of past. So it will be easy to compare him to traditional big men. His trademark is HE IS NOT YOUR TRADITIONAL BIG MAN. That’s the whole hype about Wemby! DUH
Perkins should wear the Joker's costume coz he's a clown
don't win too much...cooper flagg is coming 😂
I think tanking is out of the question lol
Perk isn't good at all
Were you lost me was with the LeBron comments
@@devantesanders4511 perhaps the most famous example I could give. But honestly it’s beside the point. Take any great player and track their development year to year-most had to hone their skills individually.
He doesn't have an elite inside game. He is just tall.
And is finishing at 75% from the paint. Those are elite numbers no matter what 🤷♂
what a joke bro...are u blind by hate?
Things will get scary for the NBA if Wemby develops and masters Kareem's Sky Hook.
It's not the fans want. It's the spurs management and the bottom line.
It's more scary if he develops Curry's 3s
@@jasonebi7308 it's more scary if he develops both Curry's 3 and Kareem's sky hook.
Why he need sky hook when at 7'5" he already has sky dunk?
