  • This is a PMS5003 coupled with a data-logger and GPS for mobile air quality monitoring, logging and mapping. For this first demo, I just take a walk/ride around Tucson to see what kind of air quality changes I might capture on a nice cool day in October. I'll demonstrate the data logging and GPS capabilities in the next video.
Many of these parts are available on eBay at a lower price, but I recommend Adafruit if you are new to these kinds of projects since the documentation is unparalleled:

    LCD Screen with buttons: www.adafruit.c...
(LCD buttons will be used in a future upgrade)
    GPS Breakout: www.adafruit.c...
    Battery Box: www.adafruit.c...
    MicroSD Breakout: www.adafruit.c...
    MicroSD Card: www.adafruit.c...
    Half-Sized Breadboard: www.adafruit.c...
Mega: just search eBay for Arduino Mega
MicroSD Reader - optional; you choose
Purchase a used cigar box from your local cigar vendor for about $5
Code for this run logs data to an LCD and an SD card. The code is sourced to various sources including (mostly) Adafruit library examples. As always, Thank You Adafruit for making my experiments possible!

Thank you. Your videos have been increadible useful to make a University proyect on enviromental monitoring with Arduino. I just wanted you to know that there is someone(me), somewhere(Chile) watching and experimenting with the material that you posted. Your codes are well expleaned, easy to modify and, most importantly FUN. Quick suggestion: SDI-12 on Arduino. That protocol is bad documented, hard to understand and well, it would be nice is someone like you post data of it. Again, thanks, your videos are awesome!

Could you please provide information on whether instruments that measure concentrations and sizes between 1 to 5 micrometers are typically much more expensive? Because this instrument in question have the capability to measure only sizes smaller than the specified range. Right?

This is the only instrument I am aware of for measuring PM for “hobbyists”. Since it hasn’t undergone the strict quality controls of more expensive alternatives, it’s data is considered qualitative at best. I don’t think the range is as important- not much difference between 2 and 1, rather it’s the costs for having instruments formally certified. @@ModestMaker thanks for your answer! Do you know if we can measure in smaller time frames. As 0.5 seconds for example?

I haven’t tried that, but not sure if the benefit of doing so. For averaging (?)

Air quality monitor in a cigar box... Rather ironic.
