    God I needed this today. Thank you soooo much for posting this flashback from a better past when music was real. These guys were magical together, and you know they loved each other just as much as they loved playing music together. I still haven't gotten over them deciding to hang it up, but they were there for me when I needed them (middle school and high school) and then they were gone (I was born in '77) so I didn't get to enjoy the Document tour, only saw them once in Chicago, but thank God I did get that one time. At least they'll live forever on UA-cam and in my soul.

    They were amazing as a 4 piece! Bill Berry's vocals are an overlooked aspect to many of their great songs.

      There's five members, actually, but yeah, they were amazing.

    • @petecampbell6117

      @@Gonzax Bill Berry, Mike Mills, Peter Buck and Michael Stipe were the only members of REM. They toured with other musicians: Peter Holsapple in the early years, Scott McCaughey and Ken Stringfellow in the later ones, but they played this show with just the four original members.

    • @Gonzax
      @Gonzax Рік тому

      @@petecampbell6117 I know REM were 4 original members then 3 after Bill left; what I meant is that though they were certainly amazing as a four-piece, that is not the case here, there's five people playing on this particular show.
      You're wrong when you say it was just the 4 original members, the fifth one is very low on the mix and you can barely see him but if you pay attention, he's certainly there playing keyboards and piano.

    • @petecampbell6117
      @petecampbell6117 Рік тому +3

      @@Gonzax Well, I can't see him, but apparently you are correct my friend, Peter Holsapple did play with them on this tour. Thanks for correcting me!

    • @Gonzax
      @Gonzax Рік тому

      @@petecampbell6117 No worries. He's hard to see but he was the fifth member playing keyboards and guitar on that tour, maybe not for the whole tour, I don't know, and I can't really tell whether it's him or not here as it is too dark but I assume it's probably him.
      If you watch the last song, "it's the end of the world..." you can spot him playing acoustic guitar at ~18:13; it's just a second but you can see him next to Stipe, to his left.
      What an incredible live band they were!

      He was great but sadly had a brain aneurysm that forced him to quit the band eventually. I guess he was exerting himself too much.
      But you’re right! I was very impressed with his drumming and energy level.
      Also, with Peter Bucks constantly playing appregios. How he does it is beyond me. You’d think his hand would fall off. Great band!

      No, unfortunately never saw any more of their concerts. Always either a ticket affordability or venue distance issue. At least I have great memories. I think Stipe is a very private person. The most recent video I've seen of him performing solo is from 2016 for a David Bowie tribute concert. I was shocked by his appearance because he looked just like Rumpelstiltskin. Very long, white beard. If you like Drivin N Cryin you may like the REM performance of Country Feedback with Neil Young on lead guitar. It was for a concert for charity. Choose the one dated 10/18/98 (as opposed to 10/17/98). I listen to that video on literally a daily basis. Cheers

      @@pat7989 For them to get back together, it would only be to commemorate the end of the world as we know it. And . . . Bill is FINE, and has been enjoying the bucolic life since retiring a quarter century ago. The band showed its integrity for carrying on as long as it did until there was no good reason to continue, wrapping things up 10 years ago this fall. It was a group decision; they never continued without Stipe. There are few things as disheartening as a band needlessly playing on into their 60s and 70s when they've said and done everything there is to say and do. Unless, of course, you're Spinal Tap. THAT was a worthy comeback. 😀
