Good explore Matt - really enjoyable. Just for your info - When you were down in the tunnels, the main areas of tunnel were for transporting live munitions and powder charges around. They were VERY sensitive to sparks and even static electricity. All gunners would have to wear special cotton garments with copper buttons and rope soled shoes to prevent any chance of sparks. As there were no electric lights back when this was operational, the only form of light was from oil lamps (which were, as you can imagine) a big explosion hazard. In order to stop the inevitable, the tunnels were often separated into 2 parts - high and low risk. The parts were always separated by glass (usually 2 layers) and only the low risk parts were allowed to have lamps in them. In the parts of the explore where you can see small windows at or near the roof, or at bends in corridors (also probably where you have a split level), this is where the lamps would shine through into the dangerous areas (where the loaders were working) from the safe parts. The two areas were often completely separate thus maintaining full safety, but allowing a reasonable level of light for the loaders to work. Some lamp recesses would not be accessible from safe areas, so they would be lamped up with a safety lamp before the magazines were opened, but the preferred method would be to have complete separation. You can see the idea really clearly at 1:00:03 just behind the metal fence, where there are two windows facing down the two tunnels. The windows would have been glass, with the safe area behind them and the lamps shining through. You can see again at 1:00:15 where there is a yellow / greenish box across the tunnel roof, with a window still intact. The roof box at 1:04:32 shows the chimney for the lamp fumes above the window, and may indeed have allowed a lamp to be lowered down the pipe instead of having to place one inside. Hope this helps Cheers
Finished the edit then haha. I didnt catch the live sorry. I had to work. You can feel the atmosphere through your camera footage and your drone footage. This is fantastic!!! Thank you Matthew
thank you for this great film, this place is beautiful & your filming was amazing, I watched & commented on Andrew's film I said 'it was just like going on holiday' (exciting & interesting) thank you for taking us 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
That was ace! Really enjoyed it. Drone footage was awesome. That music is so beautiful had to download and play all the time. Don't think I can not think of the footage everytime I hear it. Captured me immensely. X
I missed the live. But absolutely bloody fantastic you made it. Whoop whoop. Thank you. You are a lovely bunch of people. Big thumbs up to Sam and Jess for getting up the the rock face to secure the ladder 👍🙏🏻🙏🏻
Out of all your explores this is one of the best mate. I love this place. Maybe also it was an ammunition factory producing its own ammo for the batteries. Well done with this explore
Excellent video, and what I place! I appreciate the length too, it didn't feel rushed. The drone shots and music really add a professional edge to it too.
Missed when you uploaded, but watched in full, military climb, brilliant drone footage, I would love to be able to do what you guys do but physical health doesn't allow me to. 10 years ago I would of probably be doing what you guys get up to. But still, I think it's great just watching the uploads gives me joy. Keep up with the uploads 👍👍👍
Since my name may suggest I was a big person, but after loosing 10.5 stone in under a year I became disabled with spinal issues, when I was big I could walk and run albeit getting out of breath but after the wait loss my spine stratened fast which has caused multiple impingements, I can barely walk now. So much for loosing weight to get healthy lol. Oh well nevermind. 👍
Looking up an Admiralty chart for Plymouth might be a bit of a tip too, if memory serves me right there is a quite complex tidal system along there, with strong currents in and strong currents out which change all the time but if you navigate them right the effort needed would be halved just by catching a current in or out. Its why ships come in one way and out the other, in sailing days the current and wind factors could see ships out to sea in very good time.
Well worth the wait!! Really cool to see how much effort you put into what you do! hence why this crew is the best Urbexers out there! I used to watch these guys called SmashTVCanada, real old-school youtube urbex. When they stopped uploading there was a void in urbex, Exploring with Josh was too obnoxious and had no clue what he was talking about, it became a over saturated genre that people used clickbait to exploit (Urbex GONE WRONG! FOUND HITLERS DEAD BODY UNDER 1980's MOTEL BED!). But that brings me to your channel and whats come to be your crew! very interesting and entertaining videos! The reason I loved SmashTVCanada was because it was just 2 friends having fun exploring, it was the personalities that gave these locations life again! And after 10 years, Matt you've filled that void that youtube had for so many years! So thank you for restoring life back to these locations with your sense of humor and your interesting commentary, and thank you for restoring life back to UA-cams Urbex Scene! Sorry that was so long XD
I think it needs both this footage and the Sam and Jess footage to get a more complete picture of the island. Can't wait to see the other views as well.
the vol at the start needs to come down a bit lol i did say at time but i was running your chat and not in the zoom with 10cans of beer your fisrt go and few said you should make me a mod ;-) and second go i missed most of as was out on a walk. and maybe of add the links to there channel of you had in video to the side of the drake's island. and if you said it was safe i would have gone up the ladder great video as allways
Excellent explore and great to document and see the place but man the paranormal rubbish from those guys gets old real fast, someone farts and they kick off " is anyone there? are you following us? "
Quite surprised to see just how close this island is to the mainland. When you did this at night, you seemed to take forever. You were not going around in circles in the dark were you lol.
We came at it from a very far point... not near the land where we did it this time. Yeah it took like 40 mins each way last time. 10 mins each way this time.
Good video. I am originally from Plymouth, but now live in Bristol and have been exploring the underground since I was 10. (40 years now exploring) Drake's Island was a kids adventure stay over during the 1980's and that had various activities house in the barracks, such as a wooden cave assault course and hence the painting on the walls. I did also do some work over there in the 1990 when the Groundwork Trust were looking after the Island. One of the things they found when clearing vegetation was an old bell prison, basically a hole in the floor you got lowered into as a one way trip !! This is likely seriously overgrown at present, bur was awesome to see when it was found. If you are down Plymouth way again, I can recommend Excelsior Tunnel, which is under Kit Hill and some 10 mile from Plymouth. This is a Tunnel wrapped in the story of the Cold War and Nuclear experiment where the were tested the De-coupling theory. Drop me message if you want to knew more
It has recently been sold with planning permission, so depends on the new owner. Was sold in the late 1980's for £250K and sold recently for many millions
I never thought the first was a failure Matt . It was an Adventure . I have been involved in many Strange , sometimes Scary Journeys in my time . Calm head and enjoying what you were doing . Never ever have felt Lost . Even when I have tried . This Drakes Island could be TV Series with each one of you Starring in it . It would be a Hit for Sure . Imagine Gilligans Island with Stone Buildings instead of Bamboo . You guys are stranded on an Island that is Always Surrounded by Fog . Not knowing that you are only a couple kl away from the Mainland . Oh and the Island is Haunted . Comedy/Drama maybe a short Series like Faulty Towers . You Guys would Rock . Lot of Character amongst you Folks . Tks
What were a couple other styles you could add ? Maybe a little Good Neighbor's ( not sure what you Folks called it ) The one with Felicity Kendal , a little on the Buses or a little Mamas Boys . Some of your accidental Visitors could be some other Amazing Tubers . Lol .
Pretty good explore. Cool to finally see at least some of what’s there... maybe worth another proper explore with just you Sam & Jess? Also maybe if you do go back you have a better idea of where to go & what to do instead of “we need to go up, no we need to go down” & showing us your phone for 5 minutes instead of the cool Napoleonic era guns sitting right next to you... just my thoughts.
Great Video/Explore Matt as always, one little small point why don't you put an ending to your great work like by adding some form of credits at the end listing the Guys/Explores who attended, Music used etc? Rather than it just suddenly stops? or am I missing something, I was watching it on my smart TV. Paul. OK, I take a bit of my comment back as my Smart TV didn't indeed chop the last Graphic off the end :-(
Nice find. it looks like a half buried starfort. Thank you for taking me on your day out...👍
Top explorers. Great bunch of people. One of the best locations. High quality. Thanks Matt!

Awesome, thank you for the extra bits. 👍
Great info. Rope shoes... how quaint to picture that.
Great to see the real amount of planning effort it takes to really explore abandoned island properties ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🐾🐾🐾🐾
Finished the edit then haha. I didnt catch the live sorry. I had to work. You can feel the atmosphere through your camera footage and your drone footage. This is fantastic!!! Thank you Matthew

Those guys were a bit more relaxed and not as hyped this time. I liked them more in this video, enjoyed it.
I missed the live. But absolutely bloody fantastic you made it. Whoop whoop. Thank you. You are a lovely bunch of people. Big thumbs up to Sam and Jess for getting up the the rock face to secure the ladder 👍🙏🏻🙏🏻

Oi fatblokes can still explore. Get out there lol.

Love your video matt and beautiful music like yourself as a person, you are very rare indeed 😊👏👍👌♥️
Amazing guys! BigUP!
Great explore matt and gang what a view across the water so much history cheers
@24:04, maybe those tunnels you see are Submarine pens? Don’t know if Plymouth have any but maybe.
Lovely, Matt! Beautiful explore.

1:10:40 there's someone at the island standing on a surf board in the sea. Great explore !
Great vid Matt 👍👍👍

Picked a lovely day for it matt. Looking forward to seeing the new boat out on the water again.

I think Josh is coming over soon... we will have to get him on the boat.
The weather looks beautiful it would be nice to go camping up there for a few days.

Why did Dark Arts TV have a camera, but did not post a video?
I like when you said you felt a little under whelmed when you saw the cruiser. great, no EPIC explore!!!

This place is absolutely amazing, there are tons and tons of cool spots that you go to but this one is near the top.
Matt summarizes the plot to Lord Of The Rings at 1:13:43

Almost seems like there are sub levels in underground very awsome place probably a few hidden rooms or levels
Im sure we didnt see it all.
You missed the ghost going past you when you were looking at the tunnels
