      It's always easy to just blame the cops. Especially with only 1 side of the story?
      I have many cop relatives. Cops don't impound the cars and take them to the police station, the tow company takes it to their private impound yard. That's how the tow com can charge all those ridiculous impound fees!
      Sounds to me like the Tow Company employees were the ones enjoying the joy rides!
      However, the 30 second comment about the "corruption cops" sure makes for some good click bate! Lol

      @@blackmer9475 I've never had an issue with any officer in the lower 48. But, I was stationed in HI. I have a few first-hand and several dozen second-hand stories about how nasty and corrupt they are there.

      @@blackmer9475 This MAY be something quite different, not a conventional impound by an OPG, but a Civil Asset Forfeiture, which is different thing entirely. This is all third hand, "so and so said or claimed such and such," so the details are hazy to say the least. There will of course be a legal record in Hawaii if the story has any veracity. Civil Asset Forfeiture has been a major area of law enforcement corruption and many small departments (often along the Interstates) have funded their activities by seizing cars, boats and of course cash. The owner has to prove that the assets were legally obtained and often owners can't afford the legal costs. Its an area of law where its guilty until proven innocent. The police seize an asset claiming prima facia evidence of illegality, often with no evidence at all, then its up to a guy who was driving somewhere to buy a car or boat for $5,000 to prove the money was not drug money. There are hundreds of such stories to research. When its a relatively small sum that legal fight can cost more than the assets seized, allowing corrupt departments and agencies to get away with their ill gotten games. Often assets are seized without any charges being filed, let alone a conviction. Some states are reforming this process so that assets cannot be kept if there is no conviction.

      @@Ethanmor There is a famous case from back in the day when Biden authored a bill back in I think the 80s? Where a family in Hawaii lost their house.
      Their son has been caught with 2 pot plants in the back yard, the son was mentally ill and when the family would try to get rid of them he would threaten suicide. He got caught, went to jail, did his time, and went home.
      Some years later this bill goes through that give police the power to commit CAF RETROACTIVELY. The Hawaii police start combing through old cases looking for stuff they can go take. They find this case and discover they now have legal grounds to come take the families house do them "being complicit" in a "drug manufacturing operation" AFTER the son had been sentenced and DONE HIS TIME.
      This story has always stuck with me and it doesn't make this situation here hard to believe.

      He would not have had a case. The car was seized as it was used in the commission of a felony. You can open carry and conceal carry in HI with a permit that is only valid in the country that it is issued. Having a loaded gun under seat without the proper license is a class B felony. Also proving that the cops put all those miles on the car and damaged it would be extremely hard to prove without actual documentation (a hand written ledger would not hold too much weight). If this had happened after leaving a mechanic, dealer, or even a jiffy lube with the mileage documented in paperwork he would then have a case.
      At the end of the day this guy committed a felony. His lawyer got the car back and most likely got the charge dropped. He didn't spend 100k to get the car back he paid that to get the felony dropped.
      Don't consent to search and definetly don't consent if you're in violation of the law.

    • @Chris-cv1ll
      @Chris-cv1ll 2 роки тому +1

      Because corrupt cops tend to have no issues harassing you for trying. One cop (female) got another cop into trouble by not keeping a secret or such and she was harassed. The internal investigation even found that other cops had searched her in the database to find her address and such. They ended up having to move her to another district. Couldn’t find a source though because of cops and harassed being so commonplace now a days.

    I love hearing stories about people like this. One of the most wild dudes I've ever met was a contract helicopter pilot we had for our helitack crew for a while. Guy was also a Vietnam vet, and had been working fire ever since he got out of the service. He rigged stadium speakers to the outside of his ship and would blast AC DC from them mid flight, walked around helibase with no shirt, jorts, and sandals. One time he wrapped his bucket around a tree and wrecked his ship, when all of our crew went to visit him in the hospital he said "it's all part of the job boys,"
    Now he's retired and living it up at some golf place in Florida. Pretty grateful to have been able to work with a guy like that.
