    I would check the shift linkage under the truck. They can get stuck sometimes especially with high miles. Years of salt and corrosion etc. Pretty simple fix if its that

      Get out your spray can of wd40 or any type of penetration oil andlube up the shift linkage really good. You might have to take it apart and remove the rust and grim . I bet it will shift like new .( well almost) you need to get away and relax. Have a great time in Mexico. Oh don’t drink the water😂

    I don't know if it would help you or not... but whenever I build a "temporary" ramp like that... and I expect snow and ice... I lay down some extra/old shingles across the ramp. It helps shed the water... it provides traction... they are easily replaceable... and since they heat up in the sun, they do a good job melting LIGHT snow/ice. I've done this 10 or 15 times and it REALLY helps. When you do something more permanent you can always switch it up to something nicer.

      Agreed, a small amount of rain/snow/ice means a huge amount of slippery ramps. Some sort of traction is necessary. Comp shingles are a good choice.

  • @dondywondy
    @dondywondy 9 місяців тому +7

    Low transmission fluid won't cause a shift lever not to operate; the shift lever just moves a smooth steel rod (with 'grooves') in a smooth bore. The 'clicks', or shift positions, that you feel is the shift detent plate and roller. The actual problem is most likely the shift cable or mechanical linkage.

    I have a 2002 gmc with the same issue. The truck has to be started periodically to circulate the fluids. I start mine, and let it idle for at least 30 minutes. Then the tranny will work. I drive it really slow for about a click, and when it shifts, it has filled the torque convertor from the pan. I now start it about once a month. I have also put a switch to disconnect the battery. The same thing with the power steering.

  • @Sleekfalcon
    @Sleekfalcon 9 місяців тому +2

    The only thing I can think of is it is a linkage problem with the transmission. It obviously sticks but it could be bent, a solenoid, or relay. It could also be in the shift lever itself. If it hasn't been maintenanced it could be a clogged filter in the transmission. That will also make it not want to shift. But as hard as the shift lever is I'm thinking it's in the shifting mechanisms not the internal. I'm not a mechanic but have learned a lot from one. Just suggestions to look into. Your place is coming together. There is always so much to do for winter. Lol. I think we are all still doing stuff for winter all the way through winter lol.

    Smart to cleanup and get ready for winter before you go vacation. Never know what you will encounter on return.
    Great that you rebuilt the stairs for your dog.
    Old faithful, 1 more year. Battery, oil change, power steering fluid, hydraulic fluid, coolant, wiper fluid, brake fluid, grease points, wiper blades, clean out the heater fan box. Window and door handles, Mc Giver.

    Not speaking of the plow truck. Sounds like a service needed. Change ALL oil INCLUDING the diff, transmission, and engine. Replace all filters. Do you have antifreeze in the radiator. Let someone check the wheel bearings play and grease and brake shoes for you. Change all filters. This could put new life in the truck............

    Hi Greg , another great video ... On the old truck it might help if you check the shifter rod or cable going from the firewall down to the transmision , it might be slightly worn or rusted and also on each end of that rod there sould be a adjuster to move that rod closer in the direction it needs to be ,, not going into park I would try adjusting the top one to make the rod longer which in turn will pust the shifter mechanism closer to the park position ....

    Where in B.C. is your property located? I am from New Westminster, B.C., am 80 years old, and am retired in Arcadia, CA, USA. I'm curious to know which town is near your property, that's all! By the way, I enjoy watching your show. Keep up the excellent work. Eh!

    White exhaust may mean it is burning ATF. My old, old, Chevy had what is called a vacuum advance modulator which was cheap to replace and once replaced it quit burning white. I can't imagine that newer vehicles like yours would have the same part, but maybe the same idea.

    Just use a simple cable like a dog run for the Billy as you build the fence. Spray some PB Blaster on that transmission shifter cable and linkage. Low fluid won’t affect the shifter.

    WD40 the shift cables. It's very likely that it's just a bit rusty from sitting. You can find out for sure by blocking the wheels (on flat ground) and crawling under the truck, disconnecting the shift cable (carful with the plastic bits) and then shifting the trans through the gears with a pair of channel locks. it should shift from park into reverse and other gears with about 5-10lbs of pressure on the channel locks. Note the engine does not need to be running and should not be running for this test but a second person to hold the brake petal isn't a bad idea.
