Thank you. I just finished a blanket for a gift and I do need to wash it and yes I am nervous. I will follow your directions. I feel a bit more at ease.
Perfect timing as I'm currently finishing up a baby blanket for a baby shower this weekend! Now I'm not so afraid to put it in the wash. (Also obsessed with your laundry room. OBSESSED.)
i use a microplastic-catching delicates bag from fashion first aid and it works like a charm! best part is you can use it for your other delicates as well while helping to rid the oceans of tiny plastic particles.
Watching this in Nov. 2019.. I just washed a crocheted baby blanket today by hand....but then I put it in a large zippered, mesh laundry bag & tossed it in my washing machine. I set it on "drain/spin". It spun most of the water out....then I draped it over a rack to air dry. When I give it to the new mom, I'm going to include the zippered, mesh laundry bag . I am sure the blanket can be machine washed if she'll put the blanket in the bag . That will protect it.
I also have a washer with no agitator and it's wonderful! Also, if you are really worried about delicate work, try putting it in a lingerie bag. In my experience, it helps if you are concerned about snagging. Larger pieces I in in mesh laundry bags.
Thanks for this! I just barely finished an afghan for a Christmas gift and was worried about it drying in time to wrap! I have the same washer + dryer so I have more confidence getting this scary part done! Xo
Thank you sooo much .. washing my handmade items always scares me especially the crochet ones I don't want any of them to be ruined or messed up but now I have some courage ..thanks :D
This is a lifesaver, I’ve got a beautiful crocheted blanket my nan made and it’s never been washed and I was terrified to wash it for fear of ruining it
I use a fishnet bag to wash all my crochet items, I wash on cold delicate in a Front loading washer and dry on low, if the garment is 100% cotton, I let those air dry. 😁👍🏼
Good info....especially the gentle or handwash cycle..If someone does have the no heat dryer line dry is the best....personally there are some things that never should go in the dryer...cotton it fades the colors in cotton..if your like me and don't have a washer...I handwash with shampoo from the dollar store...and if its itchy or scratchy yarn soak in hair conditioner.....raise..roll in towel and line dry....p.s. love your laundry room 😍 rock on..
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your tips! I got a crocheted blanket from a lady I was close to. Anyways I want to take good care of it but I think it feels like cotton but I’m not quite sure. I would like to wash it but not sure how. My question is would I treat cotton different?
This is perfect! I am making a blanket for a friend and was wondering what to do to wash it! For items with multiple colors, do you suggest anything different? (the colors in this blanket are mainly white, black, and a bit of orange along the outside)
i just crocheted my first blanket, and it is a puff stitch blankets so there are a lot of loose puffs. and it is very heavy so i don’t know how it’ll do. i’m very scared!!
Any tips on bringing a crochet blanket back to life? Lol I washed mine in a front load washer with mild detergent and let air dry. Synthetic fibers I believe. I have done this a few times with no issues. However, this time it is like all the fullness is out of it and it is more of a net than a blanket. Any tips?
I am another Melanie. I found an abandoned baby blanket I had started ten years ago. It had stains of some kind. I put powdered oxy clean in it and it came out stain free. Thanks for your helpful video.
How do you like your washer? I have an older Kenmore without the agitator and have loved this type of washer. But I've been eyeing this Samsung with that hand wash insert to replace it. Is the hand wash insert awkward or useful?
Hi, just found your station. I couldn’t find any videos on cleaning and drying a completed blanket. I’m one of the scared ones lol. Thank you, this was very helpful!
Every time I make a blanket before I give it away I always wash it. But I find out what the parents used to wash the item in. That way if the parent has sensitive skin there is no irritation from them holding it. Plus I can make some to sell and this is the way that I can check the quality of my stitches.
What should I do if I got the super fluffy and soft yarn 🧶 and I hand crocheted it without a hook it’s a gift for my friend that’s having a baby and I want to wash it
Hi Melanie, I made a baby blanket out of Bernat baby blanket yarn as a gift for a new mommy and baby. I'm worried about my ends coming out when she tries to wash it. Suggestions?
What if you don't know what the blankets made of. My grandma made it years ago I just have one tiny spot on it and I don't think shed know what she used
What if its a pillow that has a crochet case on it? I know how to wash the yarn just not sure how to wash the pillow itself, the pillow can not be taken out of the crocheted case .. help please
I have a big blanket that I made using the Mainstays chunky yarn so it’s a chunky blanket and I’m not sure if I should use a machine or hand wash it because I made it a few months ago and I have no labels so I looked it up but I had different answers either saying to hand wash or machine wash so if anyone has the same yarn and knows please help🙂
Look viewers,I've been CROCHETING for over 30 years; 1: Don't wash the afghan more than 2x's a year-max( these are afghan big enough for a Queen-California king size bed. 2: I've always used Tide and washed on regular cycle, and WARM WATER, NOT HOT! 3: Dry on regular,or high heat for no longer than .30 minutes. That's it. No frills. Now if it's a baby blanket, listen to this lady.
HEY MEL. I JUST WASHED A VERY OLD KNITTED & CROCHET BLANKET IN COLD WATER. SADLY TO SAY IT DIDNT TURN OUT LIKE I THOUGHT IT WOULD. I EVEN STUCK INSIDE A PILLOW CASE. 😢😢
omg the coin noises ur machines make are sofa king sweet! is that the default sound or is that all custom?! i want some mario coin sound washer/dryer ahh! sure would make it that much funner yah wah hoo! thx for vid too i have this huge last airbender blankey my mom made and was scared to wash it
Hi Melanie! Thanks a lot for your wonderful videos! I have a suggestion for you... I would really like to learn how to do a crochet racer back for a tank top or a dress. Maybe it could be an idea for an upcoming video! :) Thanks again, have a great day!
I've got an Afghan that my grandmother made I'm scared to wash it because I'm afraid to put it Into the dryer I'm not sure what yarn was used I can't ask her because she passed away when I was younger I've only washed the doilies on my table I'm scared to
If it's a small blanket, you can wash it in a large delicates bag. If it's a larger blanket, many washers have a handwash or a wool setting. Generally, these cycles are even more gentle than the delicate cycle. Lastly, you can machine down ends to prevent them from unraveling, although a really secure end should not need machine stitching.
Love this video! Would Tide pods be too harsh on a 100% acrylic blanket? Also, it's three different colors, one of which is white, would the other two colors bleed to the white if I washed it? Thanks in advance!(:
It shouldn't bleed, but if you are using hand died or hand painted yarn then you may need to prewash that yarn before putting it into a project that will have multiple yarn types. ;)
Great tips Mel! How do you like your washer and dryer? We are in the market for a new set soon and I was wondering your opinion. This is Sara from Growing Stitches btw;) Where did you get your top too btw?
I have 2 questions. 1). Are you not worried about fabric softener and allergies in babies? Is your fabric softener fragrance also? 2). Why don’t you turn the door on your dryer to face the other direction so that it is more accessible?
Video was sort of helpful, but annoyingly excessive. If you’re looking for a quick, direct, to the point video....this is not it. I got so annoyed with all of the excessive information about the washer, dryer and laundry room that I bounced off to find another video.
I always use a pillow case for my crochet items on light wash. And tumble dry on very low heat. They always come out perfect.
Great tip!
When u throw it in the dryer do you leave it in the pillowcase too?
Bernice Henson do you leave it in the pillow case when you put it in the dryer??
Yes
Thanks I don’t have to watch the video :))
Thank you for keeping these videos circulating, Melanie’s work is absolutely amazing.
May she Rest In Peace 🙏🏼 God’s blessings 💗🦋

so if and when you hand wash do you also use a fabric softener as well? I want my crocheted blankets to stay soft if possible.
Love her! I’m so glad that she made these videos ❤️

Thanks for the reminder that wear is a byproduct of your crocheted items being used and loved. :-)

Hi, just found your station. I couldn’t find any videos on cleaning and drying a completed blanket. I’m one of the scared ones lol. Thank you, this was very helpful!
