Anytime someone comes in and disrupts the "establishment" you're going to get a lot of strong resistance for threatening legacy players. "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."
Thanks for sharing this perspective, Ryan. When I got into the field at 21 I was pretty naive to all of this, lol. But yes, definitely stirred the pot a bit and collected some haters along the way. It is frustrating though because sometimes it feels like their negativity is against their own best interest. It's like...we can collaborate and all rise up together! No need to establish factions and set up false limits on what's possible for people in the field (themselves included). And thanks for the quote!
Devlin, you have been amazing, you have been so helpful for me transitioning into this field. You will always have individuals that do not agree or like what you are doing in any business. Putting yourself out there to help others into the field and to understand it, is admirable! Please remember that. Also, you have been the most successful at teaching others about the field, out of all the other individuals in the industry, hence the negativity. The fact these haters and trolls have the energy to comment negatively about you, rather than step up their game, literally indicates they are bunch of losers. I hope you can see the funny side to this 😅. Keep doing what you are doing Devlin. Ignore the trolls and haters. Positivity always wins. 👏👏👏
Thank you so much for the support! And I'm glad that we've been helping with the transition. That's the most motivating part about all of this for me. And yes, sometimes I'm like, if y'all hate my approach so much, why not share a different one instead of hate on me! Lol. I did find your comment funny but I'm sure the haters won't appreciate being called losers, lol. I really do appreciate the support!!!
Thanks for sharing your feelings of vulnerability. I taught for 15 years, have a master's degree in Instructional Design, and completed your bootcamp. I have been an instructional designer for 3+ years now. I've struggled with feelings of self-doubt and negativity when contemplating offering courses on ID for teachers, in particular. I started creating videos, I have a website, but I essentially stopped all of that due to self-doubt. I appreciate what you do for the community. Those who are most critical and cruel are just projecting their own insecurities. Ignore the trolls, even if some of them seem to be pros in the field. As a former teacher, I knew a lot of other teachers who were jerks and just plain nasty.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with this as well, Daniel! (And I hope that you've been doing well...you created such a great project in the bootcamp) The self-doubt is real, and reading some of the comments from the haters can definitely send me into a spiral sometimes. But it's nice coming out on the other side of that feeling inspired to keep doing what I'm doing and focusing on making a difference in a positive way. Speaking of which, it gets a lot easier to get past the self-doubt once you start building a small audience, even if it's just a hundred people. When I started my UA-cam channel, my videos were ROUGH and it was terrifying putting myself out there, but once people started leaving comments or sending me DMs about how my content was helping them, it made me a lot less concerned about how "polished" the video was or how many "uhms" or "buts" I said. The videos were accomplishing their goal in actually helping people in some way. So if you haven't taken that leap yet to get your content in front of teachers, you should go for it!! From working with you I am 10000x sure that they would be valuable and would change people's lives. But yeah, I know you may not want to open yourself up to all of the fun stuff that comes with putting yourself out there (some of it being not very fun, lol). Thanks again for the support...we should catch up sometime soon!
Thank you for sharing your feelings and perspective! I hope you are doing well and that you're able to move forward each day knowing your work makes a positive difference in people's lives.
Awh, thank you so much for the kind words! I'm feeling more inspired than ever and am really excited about some of the content we have in store for 2025. Thanks for your support
Thank you for sharing this. You approached it with professionalism and I know it was probably difficult. When you CARE and put a lot of love into something, it is hard NOT to take things personally. People are rotten and think they're heroes behind their keyboards and cameras. Nancy's need to get a life. You have always knocked it out of the ballpark. Any of us that follow you know you have the best (I'm biased) channel out there. In my graduate ID classes, we watch your videos in our e-learning a LOT. So, that tells you that the ID academic community thinks highly of you and respects you. I can't tell you how much I have learned from your channel and the community. Thanks for addressing these issues. I do enjoy watching videos like this. I love you and you guys to death!
Thank YOU for watching and sharing support! Yes, it took me 3 years to finally post a vid like this and definitely wasn't easy, but I'm feeling really connected to the community and optimistic about 2025 :D. I'm glad that the content has been helping and we love you too!!! Thanks again!! :D
I'm really sorry you've been the target of some trolls and haters. I've always found your content so helpful, and I have learned so much from you. Keep shining your brilliant light, Devlin!
What you give and have given is so much more valuable and important than what people try to take away from you. People can just look at your efforts to get feedback and input from the community - to see that you aren't just out there working in a vacuum. You care about your people, your audience, and where the industry is going. Anyone who can't see that is not worth your time or energy. Thanks for sharing. It helps others know they are not alone if they are dealing with something similar. It's not unprofessional. It's human.
I am really sorry to hear that you are dealing with this stress and negativity. As someone who is trying to learn as much as I can about ID, I truly appreciate all of the content you put out, both paid and free. I am working through the project lab now and am really loving it and can tell that you put a ton of work into it. Your honest perspective and opening up about how you are affected must have been difficult to share and I think it is really important that this content is out for people to hear too. Sending support from SE Portland.
I'm sorry you've had a deal with this, Devlin. You've helped so many people in the field and that's raised the game not only for IDs, but it's enhanced learning for everyone. It's sad that people you looked up to and admired professionally have felt so threatened by your excellent work and it's such a limiting mindset for them to have. It's not a zero-sum game, your success doesn't have to mean they necessarily lose out. The more we all advocate for the discipline and its value, the more demand for it we supposedly create. I have nothing but respect and admiration for you. It was clearly difficult to open up about this, so thanks for having the courage. ❤
Awh, thank you so much for taking the time to comment and share this. I agree about it not being a zero-sum game! There's so much opportunity and room for growth in this field that we can all succeed together :D. And thank you again for the support. It already feels like there's a weight off my shoulders being able to talk about this with the YT community, even in this short video. I appreciate you!!
Thank you for modeling vulnerability and positivity, Devlin. Your professional, non-defensive approach to haters on Reddit is one of the reasons I decided to enroll in more of your content. They were the ones that struck me as dishonest, not you and your team.
The negativity is simply jealousy. You’ve helped a lot of people and used your experiences to build others. It’s not easy to be a leader, but keep doing what you believe in. 👍🏽
I've noticed Reddit can be an incredibly negative place when it comes to instructional designers. Many are helpful. Way too many are okay with giving the entire field a bad name, in the name of gatekeeping. It's a little bizarre honestly. I appreciate what you're doing, and I'm far from alone.
Lol, yes! I stayed off of there for years but when I took another look this summer I was like wow...people on here really hate me, lol. And yeah, it's heavy on the gatekeeping! I had a clip for this vid about the gatekeepers specifically but figured it was a little too ranty and I shouldn't include it :'D Thanks for the support! I really appreciate it.
I have learned so much from you, Devlin, and am thankful for all the great information you share with us. You've inspired tons of people. I'm sorry to hear about the haters that seemed to have spawned in lots of industries during covid. I've learned that haters like this are just envious because they can't inspire others or do as well as you do. They prove this by wasting time hating instead of doing productive work. Just remember, everyone, at least you are not like these miserable people. Acknowledge and move on in a positive way with lots of other positive people while the haters fester alone. And if you are a hater, don't be a hypocrite; stop watching and move on to something else.
Thanks for sharing so honestly, Devlin, and I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with this. I appreciate all of your hard work, well as the guidance you gave me in those early bootcamp days. I never would have started my UA-cam channel if it wasn’t for you. Hope you have a great holiday season and wonderful New Year!
Thanks so much, Kimberly! And wow, almost 5k subs!!! I will never forgot those early conversations with you and then seeing how much things changed when you took the leap and started your channel. Speaking of which, I just took a look at your vids and that AI avatar seemed so realistic!!! It must have come a long way since last year when I was using Synthesia for it. Good stuff…I look forward to diving deeper into it :D And right back at ya! Happy holidays!
Devlin, I am in your Bootcamp and I can't thank you enough for taking a risk and developing it. Bootcamp is really expensive and still I'd pay 3x the price. You're doing more than just offering a bootcamp, you're helping me change my life. Please don't shrink yourself due to other people. I know that's harder said than done, but I absolutely mean it. Thank you for everything you do seen and unseen.
Hey Devlin, I encourage you to leave this video up. Here's the reason: a lot of aspiring instructional designers have turned to you for guidance. They respect you because your approach is non-judgmental and down-to-earth. This post tells all of them what not to do. In other words, don't bash your competitors! Remember, when critics come after you, it's usually because you are doing something right. You're a leader in what you do, and who you serve. Thank you for sharing your emotional challenges in this industry. Your consistency is what makes you a stalwart in what you do. I've learned a lot of these lessons through what I do in my own career, which is leadership training and development. Stay on target. I would feel honored to grab a virtual coffee with you, anytime, even if only just to vent!
Thanks so much for the kind words, Glenn! I'll keep it up for sure and we have some good content planned for 2025 :D. Thanks again and talk soon! I may take you up on that virtual coffee, let's stay in touch :)
Your content is helping me through my master’s program. It seems higher education tells you a lot about the “ingredients” of instructional design where you show how to use those ingredients. I appreciate your efforts and will utilize some of the services you provide when I get closer to the end of my master’s. You and your team are a part of my success and for that I am grateful! 😍
Hey Devlin, Namaste from India. I normally don't comment on platforms like youtube. After listening to you I wanted to share with you something that I learnt as a kid to deal with haters, when an elephant walks on the streets a lot of street dogs bark. The elephant maintains it's dignity and ignores the dogs. The majestic creature doesn't even care about them. Can you imagine what would be the scene if the elephant actually started responding to each dog. You and your team have been doing an incredible job over the years... just believe in yourself and be yourself! Hope this helps!
Namaste! Thank you for sharing this quote with me! I'm glad you commented. I've definitely tried to ignore it over the years but it does get to me, so I may not be the majestic elephant in the story, haha. I'm just a human, too! It does feel good though to know that we're focused on making a difference and helping people, and we have an amazing community around us to help us achieve this goal. Thank you again!!
Dude! If it wasn’t for you videos, I wouldn’t have made the transition out of the classroom. I am not a Learning Experience Designer, yet, I am currently working as a Learning Technology Specialist / LMS Admin. But those haters are just gatekeeping and are upset that teachers are demanding more and leaving the profession.
The haters are just mad you're undermining the gatekeepers in the industry. Keep going strong.
Down with gatekeeping! ID is open to all! Lol. I appreciate your support :D
Devlin, thank you for being you!
Thanks for the support!!

Keep this UP! Don't take it down, Devlin. I'm sending you an email from my personal email soon in support. You rock, dude.
