2006 World Series (Cardinals @ Tigers) Game One (Anthony Reyes Pulls Off a Miracle)

- Even after beating the New York Mets in the NLCS, not many people gave the Cardinals much of a chance to beat the Tigers in the World Series. With the Championship Series going the full seven games, the Cardinals rotation wasn't in a position to start one of their regular postseason starters in Game One. Instead, they turned to a rookie that had been, in no uncertain terms, mostly awful in 2006. All he did was beat Tigers rookie sensation Justin Verlander, mowing down Detroit to help give the Cardinals an all-important win in Game One.

RIP Chris Duncan
He passed to soon💔💔💔
Such a likable guy!! Miss him!!! So happy he got the ring this year!!!
Bittersweet watching this after Chris Duncan passed in 2019.
Thank you so much for posting. I LOVE watching these older exciting games.
You're welcome! There's a lot more to come!
@@cardinalsbaseballclassics awesome!!!!
I'm a Tigers fan, was only four years old during this, even though we lost, I wish I was older to remember it. Tiges will get one soon!
@BxxDxx Hoodoo LOL
"Tigers in 3"
Lol I wonder if Anthony Reyes has ever looked up this game
This generation of Cardinals' teams was one of the all-time greats. So fun to watch.
It’s hilarious how the 2004 Cardinals who had the best record in baseball with 105 wins were dominated in the World Series, while the 2006 Cardinals who barely won their weak division with a 83-78 record were dominant in the World Series.
Very similar to the 1995 and 1997 Indians - had the Indians won in 97
Craziest part about this World Series is that both of these teams were considered to be the worst teams in their league's playoff field. Tigers went 19-31 in their last 50 games and Cardinals went 25-35 in their last 60. A combined 22 games below .500 down the stretch yet they both got hot the first two rounds. May never see anything like it again.
Only matters how you finish.
Anthony Reyes? Man I remembered this game like it was yesterday. I really thought this game was gonna be a high scoring game for the Tigers. Never thought the Cards would lose but nobody thought Reyes would only allow 1 run. Baseball certainly is a mysteries sport.
The first championship any of my teams ever won after 24 years of waiting. After 2004, I really needed this.
Now my 3 year old son has seen 2 - The Blues and the Chiefs in 2019 and 2020. He wont remember them, and these are teams passed on by me, but still...he's so spoiled...
Great to watch Molina when he was only 2 years into his MLB career.
Matchup of two of the best defensive catchers of all time.
The 2 best catcher-arms in the MLB history.
Thanks for the memories Chris Duncan.
Reyes might not hace had a great career, but he will always have this gutsy start to hang his cap on.

Anthony Reyes vs Justin Verlander? Easy choice.
Such an underrated World Series and postseason in general.
This was a history postseason many forget. IT was the first time in two decades the braves were not in the playoffs as division champions.
NLCS game 7 was epic. Last playoff game at Shea's too
@Fries...
The fact that they went there?LMAO...and didn’t get swept?LMAO...People in the sports media picked the tigers in 3 that series.
But the Cardinals beat them!
Thank you for taking the time to edit this. Much appreciated.
I went to Detroit earlier that year to watch the Cardinals play. Cards got swept on that weekend, but a Cardinal fan said "wouldnt it be sweet to see them again in the World Series?"
..we both laughed....I went home with Eckstein and Reyes' autographs on my jersey...and a So Taguchi foul ball...great weekend anyway
I was there too. Drove up from STL to see Chris Carpenter get lit up.
Great souvenirs.
I don't care if the Tigers were bad in the WS, at least we made it
And cheated. One-hit wonders.
We were even worse in 2012 with a more talented team...the irony? Call me a sore loser but I absolutely loathe the Giants and hope to get revenge on them sometime in the future.
i hear ya. as a cards fan i understand, its hard to get to this point so enjoy either way. the red birds got swept by the red sox but we were still great. have a good day my friend
If Verlander would learn how to step up and pitch better in the World series it would have helped too he struggled with the Astros too in the World series too I don't get it because he is so good in the regular season but Playoffs he hasn't been himself.
@@ryanwilliams8612 shades of David Price
Consider how close games 4 and 5 were, if Reyes doesn’t pitch this well, there’s a good chance the cardinals don’t win this series.
Not only HR by Rolen and Pujols, but also Duncan's RBI double and Belliard's nice catch at bottom 1st inning were effective very much.
In defence. Belliard was clearly superior to Eckstein.
Yeah. I think the Cardinals would have a tough road to win the WS if Detroit had won game 1. Even if the Cardinals had still won games 3, 4, and 5 in the exact same way they did, they'd still have to come back to Detroit to face Rogers for game 6 who looked amazing in game 2. That would have set up a game 7 with Carpenter facing Robertson or Bonderman. Bonderman would have been on 3 day's rest, but he was a great pitcher at the time.
This is a game I'm sure Verlander would like to forget, the Cardinals had no trouble hitting everything he was pitching.
How that cards lineup won is wild, tip
The cap. Rip Duncan
Miss mcarver, can't believe Duncan is gone, also miss larussa, hands on manager.
Man you couldn’t have uploaded game two? Haha I’m tryna get some nostalgia here but it helps when you know your team isn’t losing
why would anyone wanna watch Kenny Rogers cheat for 8 innings?
Since my comment answers that question, I’ll answer your question with a question
Would you watch late 90’s-00’s mlb highlights? Or does knowing it’s the steroid era take away the nostalgia?
😂My name's George Nemitz. I don't know this guy who passed away but, from me, rest in peace.
Anthony Reyes' tribute
And the next year, Anthony Reyes would start his season 0-11.
Awesome! Thank you for posting this! Do you happen to have game 2 and can post it soon?
theeglimmertwins I will not be posting Game Two. This is a Cardinals classics channel, and as such I do not post Cardinals postseason losses. Please see the FAQ video on the channel, as well as the video I posted regarding specific game requests.
Leyland made the mistake of starting him game one should have started rogers then jv so he didnt have all the pressure on him in game 1
What happened in 2012, then?
Because of the rain outs, Rogers could have pitched game 5, but after the pine tar thing in game 2, he didn’t have the guts to pitch in St.Louis. Cardinals fans would have ridden him like an old horse, and old Kenny would have had one of his famous melt downs. Typical attitude of a front runner.
I think Leyland pitched Verlander game 1, because he thought Verlander had the endurance to pitch in games 1, 4, and 7. Rogers probably couldn't do that at that stage of his career.
Strange lineup by Leyland

Detroit should won but my come back cards all year
Only two would not be two soon enough
Where is game 2?

Justin Verlander like Clayton Kershaw is a terrible World Series Pitcher. He couldn't get the job done in 2006, 2012, 2017 - Despite being on the Astroes I won't give him credit for winning because he cheated and 2019 he choked. Kershaw can't even preform will in the Postseason either.
No one gives the stros credit except fans in denial and the mlb. The later i cant understand.
Let's see how he does this world series
