    For everyone not understanding the Navy slang here.
    Man-O-War - a naval ship that was designed for combat and not for merchant service.
    Civies - regular civilian clothes.
    Killick - Most senior seamen among enlisted sailors but junior to a petty officer.
    Mainyard - The yard of the mainmast, from which the mainsail is hung.
    Stoker - A sailor who is responsible for all coal handling with the exception of the actual fueling of the boilers.
    Aldiss Lamp - Signal lamp for optical communication, typically using Morse code.
    Semaphore - an alphabet signaling system based on the waving of a pair of hand-held flags in a particular pattern.
    Bunting-tosser - Also known as Bunts are sailors who hoist signal flags.
    That's your bleeding lot - All you get / beer.
    Tot - a daily ration of rum.
    Don't haul on the rope, don't climb up the mast - telling how a ship was maintained in the old days and that they don’t do that anymore.
    If you see a sailing ship it might be your last - This sentence refers to how much rarer sailing ships are nowadays, so you might never see one again because of bigger, better, faster ships like the iron clads rendering them obsolete.

      I'm just gonna go ahead and say doubt on "bleeding lot". They sing "2 cans of beer a day, and that's your bleeding lot", so they mention an amount of beer twice in a single sentence? Even more confusing when they then sing, they now got another one, is it then another can or another bleeding lot?
      Sounds far more plausible that "that's your bleeding lot" is another way of phrasing: "that's all you bloody get!".
      Also because, you comment is literally the only thing I could find about "bleeding lot" having this meaning

    • @arimars9565
      @arimars9565 2 роки тому +8

      I thought the line it might was at first referring to pirates and then the later you went was making it seem rarer to see one.

    • @Kc.Bronco.91
      @Kc.Bronco.91 2 роки тому +17

      Bleeding lot means "all you get"
      The chorus is more likely in reference to pirates. "If you see a sailing ship it might be your last" bc they are going to kill you. Basically, if you see another ship out that you dont recognize, get below deck, change into your civies, haul ass and get to shore.

    This feels like every time she talks about what has changed we go back in time until we get to pirates and as she looks at them in the tavern bar and sees her crew mates. Then she sails on a pirate ship doing all of the things she is not supposed to and having fun doing it. And then it goes back to her new era ship and her and her crew laughing while singing in a circle.

    I love this song!! As I listen to it my little writer brain sees a slightly different story;
    A person (male, female, non-binary) born into a kind of high standing noble family for some reason or another had to sail with a pirate crew. At first they don’t understand (“don’t haul on the rope, don’t climb up the mast…”) but as the story progresses, the crew teaches them what to do and they end up becoming part of the crew and is now saying the same thing they did to a new crew mate :)

    My father often told me when I was just a lad
    A sailor's life was very hard, the food was always bad
    But now I've joined the navy aboard a man-o-war
    And now I find a sailor ain't a sailor any more
    {Chorus}
    Don't haul on the ropes, don't climb up the mast
    If you see a sailing ship it might be your last
    Get your civvies ready for another round ashore
    A sailor ain't a sailor, ain't a sailor any more
    The killick of our mess he says we've got it soft
    It wasn't like this in his day when he was up aloft
    We like our bunks and sleeping bags, but what's a hammock for?
    Swinging from the deckhead, or lying on the floor?
    {Chorus}
    They gave us an engine that first went up and down
    With some new technology the engine went around
    We're good with steam and diesel, but what's a mainyard for?
    A stoker ain't a stoker with a shovel anymore
    {Chorus}
    They gave us an Aldiss lamp so we could do it right
    They gave us a radio to signal day and night
    We know our codes and ciphers but what's a semaphore?
    A bunting-tosser doesn't toss the bunting anymore
    {Chorus}
    Well, two pints of beer a day and that's your bleeding lot
    They gave us another one because we swabbed the top
    So get on your civvy clothes, we'll find a pub ashore
    A sailor's still a sailor just like he was before
    {Chorus 2x}
