I've listened to literally hundreds of fingerstyle players since I first heard Leo Kottke and John Fahey in 1969. There are so many talented players, but few have amazed me to degree you have. Ever since Michael Hedges came on the scene there has been a flood of two handed tappers but few with the ability to create compelling compositions. I believe you have potential that exceeds even your astounding technical abilities. I am looking forward to see how you progress. I would recommend you get in touch with Don Ross, fingerstyle genius and owner of Candy Rat Records. Look for his work on UA-cam. He can give you advice on how to take your music to the next level. I would love to see you get a recording contract and the wider audience your talent deserves. Please keep it up! PS: Thank you NPR, for keeping your ear to ground to let us know about deserving talent like Yasmin.
Wow, thanks for such a nice comment. Truly honored. And thanks for the Don Ross recommendation, I know a bit about CandyRat Records but will look more into it.
I was all ways told that you can't play the guitar that way ,ive been into percussion and drums since i was a kid , allways played my brothers guitars like that!! Please hurry ip and come to Australia
I could LISTEN TO YASMIN ALL DAY! Everybody's entitled to their own opinions, but anybody giving a thumbs down is either jealous or deaf. THANK YOU, Yasmin. You're blessed & you bless others. Beautiful.
Listened to this album for quite a while, but had never watched a video of a performance until now. Was listening yesterday and thought, wait is that a kalimba being played with the guitar? Found this video, and I am blown away. Was impressed before, now I am in awe.
It’s like piano playing, the way you play one part on kalimba with the right hand and another on guitar with the left. Thanks for exploring and sharing new musical frontiers!
same here, heard the NPR interview and had to check things out! looking forward to getting your CD!!! this piece is so beautiful...it takes you on a spiritual journey...beautifully done!!
Absolutely fantastic, magical, and transporting! I am hearing African-Flamenco(?) fusion with a wonderful whimsical playfulness. I love your rhythms and music, Yasmin!!! Thank you so much!
@@YazMelodies I was doing a comprehension about Joseph Spence with my students, and played this to them. They approved and some started rapping along with you. You are a hit in The Bahamas!
This is my absolute favorite song! I love the Kalimba (we called it the thumb piano growing up) and the way you integrate it with the guitar is amazing. The harmonies and rhythms are incredible. Brava!
Carin Bowman Hi! You can get my music on Bandcamp at yasminwilliams.bandcamp.com/ or CD Baby at store.cdbaby.com/cd/yasminwilliams2. They give me the biggest cut, thanks for caring about that lol!
Actually I've just watched a Greenpeace video with your music that really caught me, so I immediately checked out the name of the talented artist. I must say, wow and congratulations! It's a great experience watching your performance and listening to your music.
your totally unique style is such a breath of fresh air to this (very) old fingerpicker, Yasmin! So inspiring. Up in guitar heaven you've got Michael Hedges smiling wide, right on.
I think I may have said this commenting on one of your other videos, but I'm now determined to pick up this technique (I'm thinking it may actually feel more natural to me - I'm a professional keyboardist, but mastery of the guitar has eluded me...) Also, you are freaking amazing. :)
Quick question - I'm looking for tutorials on fingerstyle, but I'm wondering if there's a specific term for your approach of keeping the guitar horizontal. As a keyboardist, I find that particularly appealing.
I feel like after Fahey broke down and then sorta rebuilt fingerstyle guitar he meant for it to keep progressing. This sound is truly new, innovative, and interesting. I can't wait to hear more stuff from you! You have developed a super unique sound and have amazing technique.
Heard your NPR interview and would like to get a hard copy (Vinyl?). I think the folks at Daptone Records have been exploring a bit. After hearing another artist on NPR (Orkesta Akokan) I purchased 4 albums (different artists) for me and 3 for a friend. Great stuff and I enjoy your music.
Since I'm one of those audiophile nerds please use loss less technology in recording. Years ago there was an artist Michael Hedges who produced Aerial Boundaries. His music was used for years as an example for customers purchasing equipment because of tonal dynamic range. I think it's a good fit for your music as well. Talk to DapTone and Third Man Records to get a high fidelity pressing on Vinyl. I'll purchase your CD when it comes out and your Vinyl when available.
I'm here because India Aria recommended her in an Instagram post on about 12/9/2021. India basically recommended 3 of her fav' new artists, this was one.
I'm nowhere near Yasmin's level but here's what I think it is. First she presses down, but she actually follows up by pulling off the string and giving it a little "flick" then. Almost like picking it right at the fret. Do this fast and precisely and you'll get that sound.
Christian and Ruthann are correct. I'm just playing the bass notes with my left hand thumb and using fast hammer ons and pull offs (tapping, pressing down, and releasing the strings really quickly) with my left hand while playing the kalimba and doing percussive stuff with my right hand and foot.
Thank you! I am interested in both of those things and use lots of extended techniques. I don't normally improvise in my own music yet, but probably will in the near future.

You must have 2 or more brains, surely one brain could not separate itself into so many places. There is not another guitarist on the planet who comes close to your level , honestly, there are no adjectives to describe, especially when one can hardly play a C chord cleanly.

Just heard your NPR interview. Now I'm here to praise your awesome, unique method! I love the Guitar Hero story.
Exactly how I ended up here.

This is so incredibly awesome!
this is one of the wonders of the musical world.
Im loving every note of this.

I'm amazed every single time.
This is stunning, Yasmin. It makes me feel the same way as when I first heard Kaki King, that deep sense of someone doing what is theirs.
Oh wow, thank you!
This young woman never fails to blow my mind. I just wish I had the talent for music like her. Although I'm happy to digest it vicariously
She is a true spirit chaneling from a special place inside and with craft and finesse. Her compositions are marvelous
It’s like piano playing, the way you play one part on kalimba with the right hand and another on guitar with the left. Thanks for exploring and sharing new musical frontiers!
it must have taken some practice to use both hands to play different instruments, special musical talent and her reason for choosing her resonances.

Yaz, I have been a fingerstyle guitarist for 52 years. Your music make me either want to give up or study more! Your work is inspiring.
Haha thank you!

Some people call it lap tapping. I've seen it done by another guitarist, Erik Mongrain.

I'm here because India Aria recommended her in an Instagram post on about 12/9/2021. India basically recommended 3 of her fav' new artists, this was one.
How is the sound created from that finger picking motion, it looks like she just presses down on it, is she picking with her nails on each string?
I'm nowhere near Yasmin's level but here's what I think it is. First she presses down, but she actually follows up by pulling off the string and giving it a little "flick" then. Almost like picking it right at the fret. Do this fast and precisely and you'll get that sound.
It is a combination of hammering on and pulling off (you can find info on Wikipedia).
Christian and Ruthann are correct. I'm just playing the bass notes with my left hand thumb and using fast hammer ons and pull offs (tapping, pressing down, and releasing the strings really quickly) with my left hand while playing the kalimba and doing percussive stuff with my right hand and foot.
Thanks I never thought the releasing motion would make this sound until I just tried it.
Nice one.
Are you a fan of Trevor Gordon Hall from Candyrat Records? His Kalimbatar style is also impressive. Good job and keep up the good work!
Wonderful! I half expected you to use a loop pedal for some of that, but nope! Real-time :)
ok she is hands down a brilliant, creative musical force, but man, I dig her bow tie!
Like a beautiful solo Bonobo performance!
