Techniques for Sampling and Analysis in Dendrochronology

- We now know what dendrochronologists do. They examine tree rings. But precisely how do they do this? How do they collect the data? How do they analyze it? This is a very involved question, but let's try to answer it by investigating the field practices of the dendrochronologist, as well as the analytical techniques they employ, including the computer software that is relevant to this task in the modern age.

They say you learn something new everyday. But in this channel you learn something new every minute.
This would be a great tutorial video for would-be dendrochronology field and lab workers - great work Dave! I remember my introduction to the VelMex machine...spent an entire fall manually measuring those cores (with a hand-clicker that went 'beep' every time you went from one ring to the next. I think the sound still haunts me to this day. Later, when WinDendro became more widely used, we used the VelMex only for special cores.
If you can spend a season using the VelMex and still like dendrochronology, you are in for a great research career!
Do you need to have sawdust in your head? :)
@@VaughanMcCue Only when you are coring trees with rotten cores :)
@@rlskinner5261 That makes sense Thanks
Pls make content on spectroscopic techniques and Medicinal chemistry

Really enjoying this series. As an archaeologist, this is a vital resource at our disposal, not only to date stuff via the wood itself, but it is also used to calibrate carbon dating.
I forgot, I went to the zoo with my 7 year old grandson. We were looking at a reproduction of an ice core. I was trying to explain the rings and he said, "oh, like tree rings."
Awe, cute story and smart kid!
@@smaakjeks 😊
Who drove who to the zoo? Brilliant little smart arse. That will learn ya! Next round of beers, make the kid pay. :)
Thats awesome.
I am just lost in your channel. Why did i just find you now...thank you. Newest sub and all i talk about is your channel.
Just brilliant. Kudos
PROFFESSOR DAVE IS ALWAYS THERE FOR US OMG YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER
I'm a student studying wood science and technology and wish you the best in your videos.
Very encouraging
Thank you
Was watching your lectures
Seriously I need more spectroscopy stuff, especially interpreting spectra's of IR, NMR, PMR, ERS etc
You make us even more of a know-it-all than we already were!
I have spent months at my lab in Beijing rolling the LINTAB's handle, clicking the mouse, and cursing quite often. Would love to repeat it once more for PhD.
you are amazing. it helped to understand my research topic more accurately!
Loved this. Most students don't understand that they do not generally make up the research question.
Hey professor Dave I appreciate your work it helps me understand and comprehend thank you!!
Hey Professor Dave, Im sorry if this has been asked before, but would you consider redoing your really old organic chem videos but with the fancy animation skills youve developed through the years? Im sure it would make it a lot more intuitive, not that it isnt already. Thanks!
Wouldn't the transect form of measurement be the same concept as a long rectangle due to the fact it's every tree within one meter from line?
Videos like this are important for laypeople to see, because it demystifies research/science. Especially biology field research is chiefly a bunch of minions (undergrads) running around collecting gross stuff in challenging places/times/distances, and then doing some basic-to-advanced maths on intuitively commonsense metrics. You explained this in a way that shows the sound and rigorous basis on which good research is based.
I heard the word science. Info sponge activated.
Tip for writing notes out doors: use a mechanical pencil with a hard lead instead of ink. That is because ink runs when it gets wet. You're much more likely to be able to read pencil if it gets wet.
Plus you can pretend your mistakes don't exist, in case you change to being a theology apologist and need to cover your behind.
@@VaughanMcCue Well, you are supposed to use a lead that is hard enough to cause an indentation in the paper, so you can't erase things completely ; )
@@backstreetfan2887 That explains why there are so many things in the bible that should have been erased. If only Mythical Moses had a Samsung tablet instead of one made of stone, we might have ended up with the ten suggestions.
Will there be more videos on the use of enzymes in chemical synthesis(Synthetic biology series) ?I find that topic very interesting.
Does COFECHA stand for something specific? I find it interesting that “fecha” means “date” in Spanish.
How do you even know that the tree ring growth is/has always been a constant though?
Good job,keep it up.......
Hello, I know this question has nothing to do with this video but, I saw your video about heats of formation (posted in 2015) and was wondering if there is there a way to calculate the heats of formation?
I have a science project where I need the heats of formation for diesel and biodiesel, and its heat of formation is not online.
Thank you for.making this video .it.shows there is a lot to dendro chronology and I have always felt it would be an important tool for research of climate change ...or the lack of it .
Dave. Will you make a course on music too? You multi-talented Renaissance man!
Yes at some point!
Hello to all dendrochronologists. Could anyone share the tuttorial about using Velmex J2X for tree ring counting....
I love learning about fields that I will never get a job in or interact with ever again
More spectroscopy videos please with problems
Giving good scientifically views👌
3:16 - It's important for the researcher to mind theirs
Can you add arabic translate?

Daddy Dave
Oh! So dendrochronologists will get samples of trees from the front to the back of it and put it in a straw and study about the sample they got! (I might be wrong)
see previous video. It is brilliant.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Cool

Potholer54 has made very good videos debunking specific unfounded claims related to covid19.
