  • We now know what dendrochronologists do. They examine tree rings. But precisely how do they do this? How do they collect the data? How do they analyze it? This is a very involved question, but let's try to answer it by investigating the field practices of the dendrochronologist, as well as the analytical techniques they employ, including the computer software that is relevant to this task in the modern age.

This would be a great tutorial video for would-be dendrochronology field and lab workers - great work Dave! I remember my introduction to the VelMex machine...spent an entire fall manually measuring those cores (with a hand-clicker that went 'beep' every time you went from one ring to the next. I think the sound still haunts me to this day. Later, when WinDendro became more widely used, we used the VelMex only for special cores.
If you can spend a season using the VelMex and still like dendrochronology, you are in for a great research career!

Really enjoying this series. As an archaeologist, this is a vital resource at our disposal, not only to date stuff via the wood itself, but it is also used to calibrate carbon dating.

I forgot, I went to the zoo with my 7 year old grandson. We were looking at a reproduction of an ice core. I was trying to explain the rings and he said, "oh, like tree rings."

Videos like this are important for laypeople to see, because it demystifies research/science. Especially biology field research is chiefly a bunch of minions (undergrads) running around collecting gross stuff in challenging places/times/distances, and then doing some basic-to-advanced maths on intuitively commonsense metrics. You explained this in a way that shows the sound and rigorous basis on which good research is based.

Tip for writing notes out doors: use a mechanical pencil with a hard lead instead of ink. That is because ink runs when it gets wet. You're much more likely to be able to read pencil if it gets wet.
