    Amazing skill and foresight on assembly sections - I can't ever imagine having the where withall to contemplate the modular nature of the sections - respect to you!!

    Love that screw-in handle/water-tower work-around! And great idea with sculpting the access road and hill. Really like that you have almost created a hybrid that would appeal to people that love both railways and giant jig-saw puzzles 😉
    Good luck with the viaduct matey! I am hoping to become a customer one day! 😎👍🍻🍀

    Hello Julien,
    maybe you should consider installing a second handle into the removable section. For easier removing these.

      It's amazing what a bit foliage, brambles and static grass can do to hide section joins.

    Hopefully, that section with the pipe-flange will still be "liftable", as it gets heavier with more detailing. Your viaduct looks so imposing.

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  28 днів тому

      I think the weight will be still managable once it's all complete. It will be interesting to see how much the lift-out section will weigh.

    HD foam can be recycled if you can find somewhere that'll take it -- if it's clean (no glue or paint) it can be fairly simply reprocessed into new sheets.

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  5 місяців тому

      Not sure whether that's possible here in New Zealand, our recycling capabilities are pretty limited.

    Hi Julian. When you said you were going to send a kit to Paul at Sandling Junction, you had a wry smile on your face. Were you thinking "If Paul can build this kit, anyone can!" (LOL)?

  • @ianjeffery4773
    @ianjeffery4773 5 місяців тому +1

    I think you were about to say, "If Paul can build it, anyone can." ;) But nice viaduct; laser cutters are making a big impact on the hobby. Have you thought about engraving a brick/stone texture onto the wood ready for painting and avoid the use of texture paper?

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  5 місяців тому

      I'm on the fence with regards to laser engraved brickwork, I don't think it yields enough visual advantage for the amount of work involved. Aside from the painting, mortar infill and weathering, the laser engraving is a very time consuming process. Cutting a single double arch outer side section on my diode laser takes just under a minute, to do the equivalent with laser engraved brickwork would take about 2 hours. Factor in 6 of these components plus another two halves and then the pylons, you'd be looking at 24 hours of non-stop engraving. This is where a CO2 laser comes into play, which I don't have (much more expensive).

    Dear Julian, great vid. Love your explanations, views on the landscape aspect, the design aspect of making the entire viaduct a separate lift out unit.
    Was indeed wondering on the galvanized flange bracket. Couldn’t see if the inside of the flange was indeed threaded, until you showed it. Think those kind of flange brackets are an excellent way to make these sections as lift out units.
    Love the progress, this whole scene is going to an absolute amazing eye-catching feature on your layout!
    Curious for the solution you’re gonna come up with on the right hand side of the viaduct, over the three main lines, from the viewer’s perspective. Cheerio

    I don't know if you've a specific viaduct in mind but it's reminding me a lot of Clifton Viaduct, in Salford, very close to where I live. That's all overgrown on the top (you can walk along it, just about, but it ends when it's blocked off next to an industrial estate). But the way you have to get onto it is an incredibly step embankment on either side. Anyway, thought you might find it of interest. It's a grade II listed building. But your viaduct is looking good so far

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  28 днів тому

      Thanks for the kind feedback and insights. I'll have to investigate the Clifton Viaduct.

  • @johnstephens649

    Great progress however a couple of thoughts. With the screw in handle in the big lift-out section is it worth adding second handle at the other end of the section? Just looked a bit of a struggle and unbalanced to lift away with just one? Also may be I haven’t been paying attention but what happens at the end of the viaduct that goes over the track and tunnel mouth yet to be built? Bridge of some sort, more viaduct or just stops?

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  5 місяців тому

      It was more a case of the lift-out section getting stuck on the blocks between the arches, these hadn't been finessed and some were poking out too much.

    Julian: Another idea for the kits would be to sell the files so we could laser cut our own.

  • @andycapp3499
    @andycapp3499 5 місяців тому

    Remember grass and other vegetarian doesn't grow under the archers as rain would not be able to water the plants.
    A second idea is having a large engine shed would railway cottages. A row of terrace houses would do.

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  5 місяців тому

      I have been toying with the idea of some cottages lining the road up the other side of the viaduct, this might possibly be a future project.

    Looking great, Julian - good to see how your trip inspired such an impressive landmark on the layout... makes me wonder what other ideas you have in the back pocket following your grand field trip.
    On the subject of carving high density foam, have you tried those special 'soft material' blades in your jigsaw? They cut through my foam like butter with virtually no dust. They also left me with big chunks of waste that I could reuse. I used Bosch blades but I think other brands do a good job too.

    • @StationRoadModelRailway

    • @jamfjord
      @jamfjord 5 місяців тому

      They look to scale to me when compared to some examples like the Welland Viaduct - those piers look surprisingly slim when you're next to the viaduct.

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  5 місяців тому

      The viaduct dimensions/style are based on several actual viaducts, which I plan to show in the next video.

  • @mattsmith4605
    @mattsmith4605 5 місяців тому +1

    See how much the shipping is and go from there. You could sell the laser cut files but that would expose you to your design being copied and sold on, so that doesn’t work.
    What about getting the kits cut commercially where your biggest market is?

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  5 місяців тому

      There's potentially a plan B if shipping to the UK is silly money, and if there is demand for the kit, I do have access to commercial production, all will be revealed in due course.

  • @michaeltrotman6960
    @michaeltrotman6960 5 місяців тому

    Is MDF better quality down under? Many people use it and regret it after when it absorbes moisture, expands, go's mouldy, bends etc etc
    The dust is dangerous too
    Plywoods safe.

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  5 місяців тому

      I'm not entirely sure. Where I'm based on the east coast of the South Island NZ, it's a relatively dry climate so MDF seems to fair reasonably well.

    The viaduct is coming along nicely and is looking more impressive as it grows, a great piece of miniature engineering. You have many different thought processes, have you thought about making the viaduct in an iron girder system, not unlike Brunel's Ironbridge structure?. The railway bridge near to me, Eckington Worcestershire, is of an open lattice type on brick pillars spanning the river Avon, would be nice to have a representation of it, if and when I get round to building my layout. Keep up the good work and informative videos, I look forward to the next one. Oh by the way, what happened to the exposed card kits?, regards Lawrence

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  5 місяців тому

      The brick arch inspiration comes from the many urban explorer channels I watch where abandoned railways are explore, and in particular the immense stone or brick arch viaducts stretching across valleys.
