    Julian, you are quite right that the brick/mortar relief in OO scale is minute.
    Brick paper wrap is good enough in most cases for sure.
    I have created 3d brick buildings using a 3d printer and even though the relief isn't quite true to scale, they just look better than flat paper.
    Having said that, most of my retaining walls etc. are built using brick paper and look fine. Nice update.👍

    We use an 80w CO2 Trotec laser machine and engraving bricks are the reason that our cost of kits shoot up purely because of the cutting time endured but we feel the end result is worthy of it. I do like your texture printing though, looks really good and from watching your videos, you manage to do the edges correctly. I see so many people wrapping bricks using paper and they get it completely wrong which defeats the purpose of using wrapped brickwork paper.

    Brilliant Julian I know you like to justify your concept but no need this hobby is all about how you want your layout and your interpretation of how it should look so you build it how you want it. There are a lot of people in this hobby who could just dream of doing what you can and have done so keep doing it regards from the UK.
    ps those are English imperial bricks ha ha

    Your viaduct reminds me very much of the one in my hometown of Stockport which I believe is the largest brick built structure in Europe.

      Funny you should say that, it is like a mini Stockport viaduct, however Stockport is much much bigger. Each span is 63 feet diameter which would be 252 mm in 4 mm scale, 22 of them plus two smaller 18 foot or 72 mm spans at each end, it has piers 42 mm wide and in its current 4 track configuration it would be 220 mm in depth and would also stand 445 mm scale above the Mersey. which is exactly way it is the largest brick structure in Europe.
      How about a kit of Stockport Viaduct Julian? I think for that you would have to laser etch the brickwork, as its just too big for A4 printed Brick paper.
      cheers
      Phil

    My word! That is some finished product. I'll catch up on this later but looks great from here. I found painting brickwork on a tiny dapol station hard enough 😂

    Hi Julian, another great video on what is an imposing structure. I am surprised, however, that you felt it necessary to have to justify building your viaduct in the style and way that you have. It is pretty obvious how much research and thought process that you go through even before you start any work on the layout, not just this, the goods area, and the warehouse to name but a few. I've commented about you building an open frame structure much like the underslung girder bridge, (which, personally, I think will be a perfect way to finish the far end and attract the eye), only because it would look like a railway bridge near to where I live. The only other thing I would like to see on the bridge is the platforms for personal to step into, it was shown on the image of which this is based on. Keep up this excellent work. You're an inspiration to me, and I'm sure may others, and bugger the doubters after all it's your train set.

      I decided not to include refuges because I did see some viaduct examples where there were no refuges. These tended to be viaducts that appeared to have a wider trackbed than normal.

    Interesting observation/revelation vis a vis the thickness of a sheet of paper and the desire to see/feel the 3-D relief of model brickwork. Your modeling is outstanding, regardless of the materials.

    Good morning Julian great video and viaduct mate and yes I agree with you on the thickness of the uprights. If you look at the severn valley railway fallingsands viaduct in Kidderminster its similar to yours. Keep up the good work. Stephen

    Good stuff Julian.
    It's all looking anazing.
    The brick/stone abutments with a steel span over a river or a road is pretty common here is the land of Aus, especially road crossings.
    Great work.
    Metcalfe adds a vertical columns over the joints rather that using downpipes.
    Great modelling.
    Stay safe and happy modelling.

    Dear Julian, great vid! Love how the viaduct is coming together! Humbly think the steel arched girder bridge will look absolutely stunning over the mainline.
    Over time I’ve seen and made some great brickwork in HO scale, which is even smaller than OO. Whether lasercut, resin, plastic, hydrocal, foam etc. modeling brickwork can absolutely be done. The difference being, that mortar dilapidation, scale and salt stains can be modeled in a different perspective. Yes indeed, it is small, but in some cases it’s worth the effort. Nevertheless, I absolutely don’t mind the wrap method you prefer. After all it’s your choice and layout. Plus the results of your wrapping method are absolutely amazing and excellent. Don’t really understand why people do make complaints about something you make available in such an excellent way.
    To keep it short. What I really appreciate about the entire corner and idea of viaduct in this location is that it gives an awesome look into the back area. One of my ‘pet peeves,’ btw. Where the perspective is expanding as we place the higher view line in front of the end, instead of smack dab at the vista of the backdrop. Cheerio

    Hi mate, lovely build on that viaduct 😎 That bridge is a lovely old cast iron thing from Brighton’s railway infancy and supported the exit and entrance to the newer goods yard (I think it might have been called the deep yard or lower yard or something. I know some of the track work at the junction that took you into the yard was still extant a few years ago, but that could all have changed now! 🤷
    The old sheds and everything were still there in a dilapidated state when I first visited Brighton as a kid though my memories are sketchy at best. I know that the columns that supported a huge raft that supported the loco sheds were still there and I believe they are part of a redevelopment which has coincided with the creation of a green walk that apparently utilises the bridge. So whilst it is no longer a railway bridge, it is most definitely still used! 😜
    I suspect that the Cricut machine is working overtime as I type this 😂
    Speaking of which, I agree with you about the brick thing. I totally respect people that want to take realism to a new level, but like you, for MY personal taste, the effort taken versus the standard of the result and the pleasure gained from achieving it will never marry up! I am definitely on Team Paper Wrap on this one! And anyway, if you add coping stones they tend to bring out the bricks visually anyway 🤷
    Cheers Jules, top drawer stuff as ever 👍🍀🍻

    one thing I have noticed about brickwork, but much of it is flush mortared ( if that is the correct term) , meaning there would be no recess from face of brick to mortar anyway, so printed brick is is fine even in larger scales than 1:76

  • @neilharbott8394
    @neilharbott8394 5 місяців тому +1

    It does make for an interesting argument, plastic or paper building kits. With the scales involved and how negligible the impact of mortar has on the model, brick printed paper over wood or plastic sheet would be perfectly acceptable, especially if you can print weathered effect onto the brick. Obviously, it appears that painting and weathering brick embossed plastic sheet may be simpler than trying it on paper, but your brick and mortar is likely going to end up overscale, somewhat!

  • @andrewstephenson3594
    @andrewstephenson3594 5 місяців тому +1

    Julian, your viaduct looks good. I agree with you about the brick paper issue. On a larger layout like yours you would end up spending and eternity painting all the bricks on all of your buildings and have very little of the rest of your model complete, as well as giving your cash (unless you are fully solar powered) to and energy company rather than buying locos etc. For a small layout it might be a different matter. Comparing your viaduct with the pictures you showed, The girder bridge end looks a bit too wide/heavy? Were you thinking of disguising it with a tree or something?

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  28 днів тому

      I honestly don't keep track of the time spent on research, or even modelling for that. I'd say I spend a good 3-4hrs researching a build.

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  28 днів тому

      I did consider track removal in progress on the viaduct with a small train of bolster wagons and a crane, but I prefer the stark simplicity of the forgotten relic without any distracting equipment.

    You are too kind to your critics. I laugh when people question your designs, not considering the amount of research you do before making a model.
