Simple 550 Gallon Rainwater Retention System Part 9
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- My neighbor built her 550 gallon rainwater retention system using two 275 gallon totes and PVC. Today it rained for the first time in a long time. If you are concerned about water storage this is a great way to get tons of water from your roof. She and several others orders a semi-truck load of 275 gallon totes. A total of 60 totes. Some are covering their totes with blue tarps and storing water in their garages. Others are building rainwater retention systems like this.

Old video but you just helped me make a much cleaner set up. Filling is solved, venting is solved, threaded right into the caps is easy. Thank you
Great Job. Before you know it, your neighborhood will be as prepared as Crawfords "lights out" neighborhood. My neighbors have actually complained about my two 55gal water barrels that are hidden from view with a small decorative fence.
Yes, I connected a short hose to fill a large bucket in which I submerged a sump pump with my 50 ft hose connected. Now I just open the tank valve and plug in the pump and start watering. The pump drains about as fast as the tank empties, so the bucket stays full.
Thanks for making this video, especially in light of your mom's illness. How is she doing? I have learned so much for your complete series. I am praying for special blessings for you and all the others who have taken the time to share their knowledge with others. Truly, thank you!!
Talk about good and timely! Just finished and here comes the rain. Your neighbor is doubly Blessed. ;-) May your Mom enjoy a speedy and full recovery.
Hope your mom is recovering. I survived a stroke several years ago, and the recovery process was a real bear. The hardest part, even beyond the physical challenges, was the mental/emotional issues. Please let your mom know that she is not "used up" and that she still has valid ideas and can still be a contributing member of soxiety. Luck and love to you and your family!
It's been up for over a year with no backup problems so far. It is working great.
@TheSunergizer Thanks for the comment and recommendation. I really like the biosand filter. Painting the PVC will definitely make it last longer and blend into the house.
@johnnnyreb51 No. Just to push it back up. When the end of the pipe blew off the water pressure pushed the bottle out. Otherwise it would stay in.
It vents through the horizontal tube out through the inlet and over flow. It works great.
Good video
@jksatte Mom is doing great. She had a rough 2011, but 2012 is looking good so far. Thank you for your prayers.
If you can keep the bugs and light out it should work great. Good idea. I would use a Berkey water filter to filter the water. You can see my Berkey video for more info and best pricing.
@AnnBearForFreedom Thank you very much for your kind and positive comment. I will pass that on to her.
@SpikenAL That was a consideration. We were able to test this on my house in a heavy rainstorm and everything worked great.
@TheHuntersTX Filtering or purifying it certainly couldn't hurt and might be a very good idea. Rain water is very clean but it is coming off the roof shingles so cleaning is a good idea.
Thanks for asking but I can't. All the info you need should be on these videos. I hope you build it. It is awesome having all that water stored.
Very nice job.
@ChaplainJoe1 The inside is black plastic. Thanks for commenting.
The crops is saved!!!! :)
Man that storm was nice, I'm near DFW. I too am setting up a water storage/catcher system. Look up Biosand filters.
I'd recommend some kind of long duration pipe covering. Something Winter proof. And I think something to protect the PVC from the Sun.
Great job!
Great solution. Thanks for sharing.
Really like how you connected the totes! Nice work!
I got a dribble too. You would have to get an electric (DC or AC) water pump to get more pressure. That is my plan.
I would think the pressure from the water from the down spout would force the water out of the over flow at hi higher rate in that situation. At the same time i don't think i would use a over flow pipe any less than 1/2 the size of the down spout other wise i could see it backing up.
@TheHuntersTX Yes. I bought mine on craigslist. This was one of 60 totes ordered as a group. I don't know from what state. If you really want to know PM me and I'll get the info. The reason to cover them is to stop algae growth which needs sunlight to grow.
Great set up. I Built one just like it from your video. I get the same water pressure yours shows just opening the valve, however, it turns into a dribble at the end of my 50 ft hose. Any ideas of how to increase flow?
You certainly can. I don't use a bucket there. I use a hose.
By thin wall I assume you mean Coex? Yes Schedule 40 is heavier but the Coex is just as durable and UV resistant. If by thin wall you mean S&D then I would not recommend its use for this type of application as the sun will deteriorate it. It looks like Coex as the inner wall appears to be black corrugated. Great vid LDS.
Sorry about your mom. Hope she's better
oh yea, i just heard the other day that the residents of maryland are going to be charged a tax on rain water that runs off their roofs and driveways.. idk how that works its pretty ridiculous but they are incorporating all the water companies around here. theres a vid up on here about the tax
I don't have a parts list. The tots I bought were $75 each delivered.
Iv ben wanting to do this. 2 stack high 300gal totes and have about 1 to 2 dozen totes. When it rains in cali where I am it pours, we akso get droughts. Gonna use this as emergency water system for also a portable fire pump too, just in case. Should have 3500 to 7500 gal of water depending if I use 12 totes or 24.
It was a local company. It was $75 per tote delivered.
Respond to this video... Thank you. I hope you got some rain too.
I would be more concerned about using a steel drum than a plastic tote.
That is a great deal!
He said YOU can. That's his over flow, it's not for filling anything. He uses a hose on the right attachment.
LDSPrepper,
Are you all able to share where you got the "totes" and what is the reason for covering them with the tarps?
Hello I only recently discovered your videos and I am a big fan. One question I have though is do you have any concern over chemicals(BPA's and other plasticizers) in the various buckets and totes that you use for water catchment and planting leaching into the water and ultimately being absorbed by your plants, or in the case of water storage being imbibed by you or your family? Do you know if steel drums have chemicals that would leech into water or soil? Thank you.
LDSPrepper,
Any water treatment needed for a retention system like this? I can see in an area that gets lots of rain that should not be an issue but lets take Houston where we have seen little rain
@usfreedom22 Thanks US.
Buy chance is there a parts list? plus what did a truck load of totes cost? freight would vary depending on the distance traveled. Thanks
I'm curious as to why you didn't put more blocks under the totes so that a bucket would fit under the exit valve?
OOFDA trying to find the right pieces locally HomeDepot/Lowes is a PITA.. No idea how you did it, I guess "Texas/Oregon" > California in the pipe availability.
We have 3" and 4" PVC DWV Pipe, but can't get bigger than 2" PVC locally. And then if you want to do a 3" pipe to 2" (for tote feedage) you have to order can't just pick up in store. Man love trying to get things to work together but when stores don't at least try to help , it starts to get ridiculous.
@TheDenisedrake It was cheaper. I wouldn't do it again.
Hey LDS...great videos. Just bought totes and planning something similar. Question for ya. If the overflow does not have the same volume as the downspout coming in aren't you eventually going to fill the downspouts all the way up to the gutters? Not an issues I'm guessing on a nice light rain but some heavy rain I wouldn't think it would take long to backup. Thoughts?
i was thinking the same thing as him.. i roofed for a few yrs, i know there are some hydrocarbons that cause dna mutations, maybe just from fumes, not sure.but i heard of a woman using gutter water on her plants and they all died. theres crystalline silica in asphalt dust but i would imagine after some time it would wash away.some may possibly leach out but hey i think its worth the risk, sure beats dying of dehydration right?
please help! how do you know what to glue and what not to glue? or when to use hub couplings? I want to install a similar system as your stacked totes but unsure if I need a flush system or an overflow (not going to be for drinking)
where is the air vent
how do you keep water from freezing? you might not have this issue where you are in Huston. But in the North, we do.
Are you drinking water why do you need to 1st Flush
You can? It didn't look like the valve was high enough for a bucket to sit upright under it. Kudos to you then.
?? I don't have a clue what you're talking about. I'm talking about using a bucket under the valves in the front, not the overflow on the side. You can haul a bucket of water higher than a hose will spray out of the tote.
@TheHuntersTX Filtering or purifying it certainly couldn't hurt and might be a very good idea. Rain water is very clean but it is coming off the roof shingles so cleaning is a good idea.
@TheSunergizer Thanks for the comment and recommendation. I really like the biosand filter. Painting the PVC will definitely make it last longer and blend into the house.
