well that is mostly what it's known as but basically Ceili means 'together' so it can actually just mean a chat. In fact I've read there's a phrase in Ireland when you just want to call at someone's house for a cup of tea they will say 'I'll call at so and so's house for a ceili'

I sometimes wish I could timetravel a couple of centuries into the past so I could attend one of these festivities but then I remember the lack of indoor plumbing, disease outbreaks and virtually non-existent women's rights ...the lack of indoor plumbing and outbreaks I could survive.

@jettiesgirl That is so true! It was like watching a play. When you see them live it just takes your breath away, because it's like you can't really believe that you're actually watching them perform in person. If anyone ever gets the chance to see them, go, go GO! You'll love it.

Cèilì is not a party, it means spouses from cèile (spouse) the context though implies it is a place so maybe it's the name of a place for people to go on blind dates.
The root meaning of céile isn't "spouse," it's "together." It only means spouse when joined to the word "fear" (man) or "bean" (woman). You're literally saying "together-man" or "together-woman."
Thus in this context "the céili" is a gathering; more specifically, a festival involving music and dancing.

Not sure if I understand what you are referring to...you are a Christian, not denying your ancestors who were pagan and focused more on the jewish side of the bible....sounds to me like you want to walk to middle of the line not to offend anyone rather than make a choice and still embrace all religions.
