Brandon Tran it was too short to be a spear, and also he wasnt using the knife as the spear point but he was just sharpening a stick into a point. So in that case the knife is still used as a tool and not a weapon
tr3nta Someone should make a skit about something like this. Have 2 adults having a conversation about a knife being a tool, so kids can play work with them. The kids would be in the background fletching bows and other weapons and using them at each other, while the adults are lost in conversation. Also, yes knifes are tools. I never said they were weapons, but my previous comment could be misleading depending on how it's read.
+Brandon Tran I find it interesting that you consider a pointy stick a spear. Your comment also makes me think you consider a spear a weapon first. Why not a tool for hunting/fishing? I'm guessing that's what most spears are used for nowadays. Quick question. Did you grow-up in the city, suburbs, a small town or the sticks?
I was in a forest kindergarten (or nature kindergarten) and we would also make these pointy sticks, not as a weapon, but because they were so easy to make
Out of the entire documentary, journalist pulled a bombastic subject, playing with knives. First of all they are not playing with knives at all. Second of all they are learning basic life skills, something missing in the world today. They are exposed to the nature, not to a world of electricity. They learn to depend of themselves and each other. How could anyone not commend this, should they play with tablets to learn this.
+Xaos Legion You should look at how the Mennonite and Amish raise their kids. They seem to acknowledge that danger is just a part of God's plan. I am agnostic myself, but there is much to be admired in their ways of doing thing and they are much more flexible than most people think. It just depends on the group or church leader, they are all different.
I didn't go to a forest kindergarten, but did the exact same things in a regular danish kindergarten. aswell as in the first grades of primary school. Being trusted, and having the ability (being allowed) to learn from your own mistakes good or bad as a child, is one of the most important lessons in life imo.
Exactly. I went to a normal Danish kindergarten, but we stayed in the playground in all sorts of weather. I recognize the broken bones and the scratches, but we survived it and it gave us an opportunity to explore. If something resulted in a scraping the first time, we found another way to do it the next time. Sometimes that would result in a bruise, and then we tried a third method - sometimes it worked fine, the second time and we gained a new skill.
With 40 years of experience working with children 1st - 12th grades, special needs children most of the time I whole heartily subscribe to the outdoor kindergarten experience. Children learn more when they are moving and exploring then when they sit quietly facing forward with their hands on their desks.
knifes are tools. this is amazing not an ipad in sight yesterday i took my 2 yr old girl for walk in the wet muddy woods near the river to throw sticks in it and she loves it. and was very relaxed when we got homw
+Jase W/ SideFX Keep doing it. You'll see the difference between her and her friends clear enough in a few years. Not being smothered or sheltered from the real world does wonders for a kid and helps them to get a healthy mindset that will benefit them throughout life... something they'll pass on to their kids, or, your grandkids.
Wow I am very impressed, would have loved this as a Kid...Scandinavia is so far ahead of the World. They have very good ethics in Criminal Justice too!
God, if only I went to a Danish kindergartens when I was younger. Kids these days need to act like kids God damn it! Parents are insulating their children from the outside world!!
I'm Danish, and I laughed so much. It's "only" 5 degrees. To survive being cold and wet. In my kindergarten we were almost in the Forrest everyday. And that tree wasn't even that high. But dat accent though!
Some people say its because we have a word that does not exist in other languages. The word id hyggeligt and its hard to describe in English. EDIT: i dont think that the word hyggelig exist in that many other languages.
Maybe they should teach the Scot's that as well. The Northern half of Scotland was raided then settled by the Viking who steadily drove south until the Scot's King signed over the northern half of Scotland to the Norwegian King in 1098, recognising a fact over 200 years old. That portion of Scotland along with Norway was united with Denmark in 1282 and the Danish King Christian I sold ot back to Scotland around 1474.
I'm 68 years old, the oldest of nine. Six brothers two sisters. This is the way we grew up and and how my wife and I raised our children. This method allows the neurons to properly connect...This gives the children the muscle memory needed to function properly as they grow...
i'm from Denmark and went to one of these Kindergartens as well, absolutely loved it! The pedaogouges generally trusted the kids and I think that by showing the kids this kind of trust, the kids in return would learn and respect the rules and limitations set by the kindergarten. My mom later told me that the leader of my Kindergartens would tell parents that "you couldn't complete childhood without bruises and a broken bone". I agree to this day. You learn a lot by mistakes, but first you should be allowed to make those mistakes and succes also feels a lot better if you have experienced failure, sadly many kids don't experience that today imo.
That is really neat. I wish I could have attended one :D Schools should teach more real life skills, such as cooking, especially since parents suck now days.
+Samantha Squarl Cooking classes are mandatory for Danish kids in middle school and they can choose to get more than the required hours if they want to.
+FloppY That's good. I seen a video recently where they presented basic veggies/fruit to American elementary children and asked them to identify them. They failed horribly. No wonder Americans eat so much fast food. Schools should provide some real life skills instead of drilling random facts into thier heads that more often than not never come up in real life.
Yeah, it all makes sense, the Danes are very relaxed and conscious of limits. Been there three times and loved the country and the people. They go to school right up until they're 19, so they're very highly educated and sophisticated, and at least bilingual if not multi-lingual. They place a lot of value on family and friends. We could learn a lot from the Danes and not just about forest kindergartens.
I remember when I went to kindergarten here in Denmark it was also a forest kindergarten. Where we learned how to carve with knives the right way and the save way we learned how to make all sorts of things like figures bows and arrows and also we learn about the nature and different plants and animals, what plants and leaves you can eat and how to track some animals. It's so amazing to go to a forest kindergarten
& Id GUARANTEE MORE than half of these kids WILL STILL be doing Outdoor activities of some sort whether its Camping or whatever it is- while growing into a young adult UNLIKE A LOT of Teenagers here in the U.S. that would rather sit inside & play video games (which there is NOTHING wrong with! IF you have a healthy balance & its NOT ALL you do!) ESPECIALLY with the Overweight issues...
this sounds like such an amazing way for a child to learn- they will definitely learn to appreciate nature more. I would love to send my kids to this when I get older.
... Its not. That environment while giving unique possibilities also has severe shortcomings. More or less nothing they learn there actually prepares them for the life they are most likely going to have when growing up when their problems are not going to revolve around how to widdle a marshmallow grilling stick but paying your mortgage.
Maeggoel I know. I am just saying that this has nothing to do with modern society which is one thing we actually HAVE to teach children/teens more about.
I'd send my son to this if we had one in Ottawa. I grew up in the countryside so I pretty much had an "outdoor" education from a young age. I'm average height and size. . but when I was young I was stronger than all the town kids. We didn't have a TV either. . so we were always outside in all weather.
i grew up in Denmark, and attended a forest kindergarten. And honestly until about 3 years ago, i had no idea people in other countries found that bizarre
Recently my old elementary school just replaced all the grass in the kindergarten yard with plastic fake grass and the yard is smaller then my houses backyard the school has over 100 kindergartens. So ya rely different then Denmark kindergartens.
In my school I also 'played' with knives. If you are not allowed to ever use them you'll never learn how to be careful and how to use them for the right use
+Arno Nym Title is misleading. This isn't a school, it's a kindergarten. These kids are 3-5 years old. But yea, your point stands, but it's kind of an important detail.
The difference is the amount of time the kids spends outside. The forest kindergarten is almost exclusively outside, in any weather, where the traditional kindergarten is more inside in comparison.
Søren Hougaard Rasmussen I min børnehave var vi også ude hele tiden men jeg bor også ude på ''Landet'' så det er vel ikke helt det samme som KBH, Aarhus og Odense
I went to Løvspring wildlife-kindergarten (Viborg, in Denmark) and i must say that this was something I couldn't have been the same without. Now I'm a scout that loves wildlife and the other children can learn a lot from me :-) this was a nice insight on things.
I'm from Denmark and I went to a forest kindergarden, and did all those things like played with big saws, knifes, explored and climbed the biggest trees I could find. It was fantastic, and I didn't find any trouble learning, actually I was ahead of most in my class.
Great video! I learned how to use a knife at a young age and respect them for the tools that they are. I wish more outdoor education would be adopted in here in the west.
As a child growing up in Germany i was allowed to go where i wanted, climb what i wanted etc. When I came to America at age 11 I felt like I was put in a cage.
Even if you didn't go to a forest kindergarten, there's an almost 100% chance that you've frequently visited a Naturskole (literally a nature school) as part of your education after kindergarten, i visited two very often one was right next to one of Denmarks deepest lakes called Furesø, where we learned about a multitude of fish and learned how to sail/fish, cook fish on a fire etc. and the other was a part of a farm so we learned slaughtering animals the old school way, taking care of farm animals and how to be around different farm animals, such as cows, chickens, sheep/goat and pigs, all within 10-15km of Copenhagen. I's not that weird when you think about how big agriculture continues to be in Denmark, of course it's gone down the last 20-30 years especially in the fishing market, but i'm fairly sure these opportunities in early school years helps tremendously with keeping them alive.
Having grown up in Værløse I too have visited that particular nature school, but it seems that you had a much more rich experience than me. Although I did see how to break a deer in school, most of my experience with nature, such as slaughtering and preparing chickens came from my time as a scout, rather than from my school education.
Let me add how breaking a deer and slaughtering animals in general is meant to teach the kids about animals and food. Where the meat is located and from what parts of the animal. We teach the kids to pay our respects to the animal if we use everything we can and dont let anything go to waste. The smell, the blood etc is all part of the learning process and no, it wont make them natural born sociopath killers but they will know the food was not made in the local supermarket :)
We have the same thing in Norway, it's an amazing concept where the kids can develop themselves on their own terms. I hope others also can open their eyes to this kind of kindergarten and education.
+Reed ”J-Reeder” Tucker I work at a similar setup in Sweden the demise of Sweden in overtly excaggerated for cheap political points all the time. we are great because we do all the things you hate
+Food For Thought there are good and bad things about living everywhere. It might be the rape Capitol, but then maybe less people are shot on the street. Less people are robbed. Idk there are other things that are better than most of the world probably. But idk I'm not Swedish.
***** It's quite similar in Denmark. I don't understand why you think they deserve i though? They're just saving people in need by giving them shelter. Their immigrations system just isn't the best. There's also the fact that they've accepted way to many considering their size...The thing is, here at least and I think something similar in Sweden, you don't have to work to get paid. You get support from the state if you don't have a job and it's actually a decent amount of money. You also get paid to go to school, also quite a generous amount. So when people come here, they don't always feel like they have to work because they expect to be supported by the state. They also seek out areas where other people who speaks their language live (ie ghettos. the ghettos came to be because the state placed all the immigrants in the same areas though, so it's their own fault mostly that they exist.) It's a mess but every country has it's problems. And it's not like every immigrant has bad intentions.
unfortunately true. American parents need to not wrap their kids in bubble wrap, because that's not life. They need to be taught the uses of knives as tools...not toys. Put them in Girl/Boy Scouts as soon as they are old enough.(or ready/want to)
OMG I MOVED TO THE UK WHEN I WAS 5 BUT I WAS BORN ON DENMARK COPENHAGEN! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE USED TO DO OMG! IT WAS SOO FUN! WE WENT SKIING, hiking camping everything!! Danish people are really clever they let children explore life before putting a textbook in your face I always loved that! Can’t wait to go back this summer!
+01DOGG01 Naturally, our universities aren't like that. But this extends to our whole culture :) These kindergartens are spreading more and more, because a lot of us are finally starting to realize that Iphones and tablets maybe aren't the best tools for assuring a good future for your kids. I will definitely send my children to a place like this :)
Denmark is a nation with strong trade unions, and a strong social support system (nearly socialist), with a "market" economy that is well regulated by a democratic government. As such they enjoy a high standard of living and a high level of income equality - as well as (some might argue BECAUSE OF) one of the world's highest income tax rates. In a nation with minimal social division, and low poverty rates, children learn to use knives - as they say in the video - "not at a weapon but at a tool." It's amazing how some on this thread interpret this video as supporting the North American gun crazies - it is nothing of the sort, but rather is a beautiful illustration of what happens when a strong government redistributes wealth to maintain a peaceful and prosperous society: children thrive. Can we say that about our "democracy" in the United States?
Joseph Kinsella: ahhh shut up with the Democratic/Socialist bullsh*t! Politics have NOTHING to do with WHY these CHILDREN are being taught the correct way to use a knife- as a tool & not as a weapon... Give me a break! & just because you word things correctly, doesnt mean your correct! & THAT System WOULDN'T work in the United States & its NOT supposed to! It isn't the point whatsoever...
Great video from the Limfjord - living place for many many Vikings throughout time - these kids will allso survieve time and live in harmony with our nature - I love it - klø på unger
I'm danish and went to a forrest kindergarden to. I was a great time, and it thougt me alot about the nature. And like many other danes i care for the future when it comes to global warming. Green energi is very appreciated, and something we are very proud of.😊
This is great, definitely different cultures, every country has different levels in which they let their kids roam unsupervised, in arab countries parents will let you play outside and roam into other neighborhoods, some American neighborhoods are similar but not as much as the arabs countries ive lived in, Denmark has taught the kids early on what responsibility is and safety in a good way America can be sue happy, so teachers and schools have to be more careful Regardless i think what the danish are doing is fantastic
"only" 5 degrees. that is actually not very cold in denmark. while i was laughing i could not stop thinking how Norwegians would have reacted when there is even colder up there XD
There's something about *_actually falling out of various heights of tree_* that really conveys the meaning of "9.82 meters per second, per second" better than any lecture, Bill Nye VHS tape, shitpost textbook diagram or VR experience ever could.
I am from Denmark and i thought this was normal!? They said it was freezing and 5 degrees.. Normally its 2 degrees in Denmark wth.. This is the soft side of Denmark in my opinion
My parents also gave me knifes and even saws , to make my own toy trucks and toy guns, when I was 5 years old. I cut myself many times. I am 41 years old now.
I dont see anything wrong with it. these children are most likely more disciplined and learn more by doing what they find fun. this is how children have learned ever since the beginning. all this political correctness and the over use of "we have to protect the children" is more a modern problem.
I love that my parents let me be free and never really held me back, got my first knife when I was 5 and 10 years later I have a collection of around 25 knives. I still go into the forest atleast once a week if not more
"Its not seen as a weapon, its a tool" finally someone that isnt brainwashed and stupid. Respect to these people
tr3nta I find it funny how they say that as the kid is making a spear.
"Yes, sometimes they hit. And it's an accident. But that's the way to learn."
Something a lot of us have forgotten.
Well, this is also what's known as "learning the hard way", but it is probably the most impactful way to learn.
It’s the only way of learning
Also. I'm 30. Am I too old to attend as a student? I want to play in the woods, too!
+Grindstone what stops you :-)?
Harriet From doing it hours every day? Work and adult responsibilities :(
+Grindstone - You gotta be creative: become Forest Ranger, survivalist coach, or study outdoor learning.. ;o)
I missed out too screw normal school
when in nature everyone is a student
They are not playing with knives, they are working with knives.
Darius Jordaan if only i could use that excuse at my school.
Darius Jordaan I'm ordering a knife and IMMA bring it to school an says its a tool not weapon ....I not kidding

+kevin c It's a pretty clickbaity title and surely deserves a better one but maybe this will bring more attention.

Great! I love to see kids growing up like we did in Norway in the early 80's!
Im amused with how they treat kids as infants untill they turn 18
this is what my school was like in england. A tiny private school.
climb trees, get dirty and explore the woods.
Denmark, fuck yeah!
Godt skrevet, AceRex :)
This is the most wonderful video I have ever seen about education and respect! I loved it!
We have the same thing in Norway, it's an amazing concept where the kids can develop themselves on their own terms. I hope others also can open their eyes to this kind of kindergarten and education.
Denmark really seems like heaven...
Hope they don't end up like Sweden
Hørt!
What do you mean?
+Reed ”J-Reeder” Tucker
I work at a similar setup in Sweden
the demise of Sweden in overtly excaggerated for cheap political points all the time. we are great because we do all the things you hate
There would never be a school like this in America. The teacher would be put in prison for child endangerment.
+Tegan Lov ...that's why you change the law before you take shit into your own hands, like any civilized and intelligent human being.
unfortunately true. American parents need to not wrap their kids in bubble wrap, because that's not life. They need to be taught the uses of knives as tools...not toys. Put them in Girl/Boy Scouts as soon as they are old enough.(or ready/want to)
There are schools like this in the US! I found one near me and enrolled my son. He starts in 1 month
There are forest schools in the US, they’re just not as common due to certain restrictions
Hi could never be more proud of these kids
Teaching them correctly from a young age. Fostering a respect and love of nature.
Wonderful to see joy, curiosity and playfulness being valued and nurtured - children in their natural habitat!
Whelp, packing my stuff and moving to Denmark, bye Canada!
Can't deny their viking roots.
Excellent documentary!
They are ready to invade some Saxon kindergartens! (Sorry, I just watched a Viking movie...couldn't help it)
Don´t worry, you got it right, just don´t tell anybody, it´s a secret, we want England back, shhhhh.........
Well done this type of teaching is very effective I approve of this
This was better than when the time my school did camping
love how the one injury which resulted in a child having to go to the hospital had nothing to do with the play
These kids will grow up super healthy both mind and body! Super ideas....
I remember in my elementary school we were actually allowed to use power saws and drills in shop class. Nowadays they're just plastic hammers...
This would be a great way to help fight the obesity problem in America not to mention the widespread irrational fear of knives.
Yes, knives can be lethal.
According to The National Rifle Association, its much safer for everyone to carry a good ol'fashioned gun ;)
iMeMySelf you’re more likely to survive a bullet wound, rather than a stab wound though.
Guys! They are tools, not weapons. Didn't you hear anything they said?
I wish my school was this chill in America
They don't "play" with knives, they learn to use them. Knives are not toys.
Let kids Be kids
Indeed, too much sugarcoating, and they'll never grow up.
Wow would I have loved a school like that when young!! Fantastic!!
Can’t wait to go back this summer!
i wish my school was like this
Ethan Vangster
Don't we all?
Good. Political correctness and nanny state bullshit is out of control.
John Smith
LOL bro, I don't think their kinder programs extend into uni ;)
+01DOGG01 Naturally, our universities aren't like that. But this extends to our whole culture :) These kindergartens are spreading more and more, because a lot of us are finally starting to realize that Iphones and tablets maybe aren't the best tools for assuring a good future for your kids. I will definitely send my children to a place like this :)
Welcome aboard mate! :D
This is the nanny state.
I'm 100% certain that all of the parents would be considered leftists by your standards.
This how children have learned for hundreds of years, it’s only recently that we have become over protective and I’m guilty of this myself.
All the trolls retreated from the forests into the internet
I love this so, so much. Outdoor schools are awesome!
In a nation with minimal social division, and low poverty rates, children learn to use knives - as they say in the video - "not at a weapon but at a tool."
It's amazing how some on this thread interpret this video as supporting the North American gun crazies - it is nothing of the sort, but rather is a beautiful illustration of what happens when a strong government redistributes wealth to maintain a peaceful and prosperous society: children thrive. Can we say that about our "democracy" in the United States?
Sorry for being 6 months late but your reflection is very intelligent and refreshing.
Joseph Kinsella ugh i know
Joseph Kinsella , you're real Guru as described in our holy vedic books. Keep doing this and keep posting...salutes😍😍
It isn't the point whatsoever...
daAnder71: EXACTLY! TOO MUCH helicopter parenting & MANY MANY MANY other things makes this Video as refreshing as it is to see from the U.S.
Wow ! teach your children well -- amazing and wonderful
I love this concept of school I wish they had this here in the USA
this lady should teach alll parents, a thing or two. shes awesome and so clever..
Awesome! There is still hope! :D
Great video from the Limfjord - living place for many many Vikings throughout time - these kids will allso survieve time and live in harmony with our nature - I love it - klø på unger
Hey! Denmark is close to America, time to move and fake my age!
In what way is Denmark close to America I hope that was a joke
only 6 hours with a plane...
+The Flying Gasmask Well yeah But its not geographically close to Denmark. And it's usually 7-8 hours with plane
its close if you are Canadian ;) and trust me im danish ;)
Excellent video .. I will donate to this kids learning center
My daughter is going to a forest kindergarten, my only concern is the shipload of extra laundry!
Only parents care about dirt on knees. Just let it sit for a day, you can brush it off :)
SightForMemories that's easy to say when you haven't tried it!!!!!
Epic! Every kids there are amazing :D come on play to the distant land, i love nature adventure
Interactive learning is by FAR better than stuck in a classroom. Unfortunately, America is too stupid or too lazy to do something like that.
Im from Denmark and i rember going to kindergarden like this and it was amazing. Sorry if i spelled anything wrong.
Those kinds have better waddling skills and knives than I do. I'm a boy scout.
Isaac Lopez ur a shit Boy Scout then lol
This is great! They learn to be safe with such misunderstood tools.
Badass little Vikings
I'm danish and went to a forrest kindergarden to. I was a great time, and it thougt me alot about the nature. And like many other danes i care for the future when it comes to global warming. Green energi is very appreciated, and something we are very proud of.😊
This is great, definitely different cultures, every country has different levels in which they let their kids roam unsupervised, in arab countries parents will let you play outside and roam into other neighborhoods, some American neighborhoods are similar but not as much as the arabs countries ive lived in, Denmark has taught the kids early on what responsibility is and safety in a good way
America can be sue happy, so teachers and schools have to be more careful
Regardless i think what the danish are doing is fantastic
You mean roam into other neighborhoods for marriage? Dangerous place for a 6 year old visiting an uncles family.
This is beautiful.
This kind of thing reminds me of things that I did as a kid. 10/10 would send my kids to an outdoor kindergarten.
My parents also gave me knifes and even saws , to make my own toy trucks and toy guns, when I was 5 years old. I cut myself many times. I am 41 years old now.
Can we get a finger count? ;)
This is so refreshing!
Beautiful.
I wish the U.K goverment would share in your enlighted approach
I'm from Oklahoma and This is good this is way we played when I was little kid in the country we just found something new to do all the time
I dont see anything wrong with it. these children are most likely more disciplined and learn more by doing what they find fun. this is how children have learned ever since the beginning. all this political correctness and the over use of "we have to protect the children" is more a modern problem.
I see that political correctness as a mislead compensation for the primordial instincts our modern society is disregarding.
amazing kids good job guys I wish I went to this school when I was a kid
im danish and currently laughing my ass off this is hilarious
I love that my parents let me be free and never really held me back, got my first knife when I was 5 and 10 years later I have a collection of around 25 knives. I still go into the forest atleast once a week if not more
They are not playing with knives, they are using them...
Oh wow... this brings me back. I really miss playing in the muddy forrest, climbing trees, making weapons and just carving wood figures.
