it provides interesting commentary later on. He lectures the guy about being responsible while he has half nude photos of students on his phone and has been allowing Winnie to hit on him. He can only lecture because he didn't get caught. It's also a foil so it doesn't make Cairo's actions seem so unbelievable.

🖐I disagree; the visual transformation of Verbal in *The Usual Suspects* is a powerful element that might not have had the same impact if it were conveyed through text in a novel. The shift from a seemingly harmless character to a criminal mastermind is made all the more striking through the medium of film.
📽The visual cues, body language, and change in demeanor are aspects that are uniquely captured on screen. This serves as a reminder of the distinct storytelling capabilities of different mediums. Each has its own strengths, and in this case, the visual medium of film effectively portrays Verbal's transformation.
🎞Except that in Cairo's case it will all happen in the sequal. It would be fascinating to see Cairo’s transformation from an innocent teenager to a psychotic criminal mastermind.
🔪This shift in character could provide a deeper insight into her psyche and motivations, adding another layer of complexity to the narrative. However, it’s important to remember that such a transformation, especially in a character as young as Cairo, could be quite intense and potentially disturbing for some readers or viewers. It would certainly make for a compelling storyline.

Hi! Just wanted to say, in Anthropology and social studies we usually use the word “perfect victim” to describe the “requirements” that sometimes come with being taken seriously as a victim. For example victims of SA during wartime (especially in more conservative countries) weren’t being taken seriously if they were not a virgin, or if they were a sex worker for example. Societal expectations to victimhood are strongly tied to how we portray victims (in the case of warcrimes with SA often very young girls) and anyone who doesn’t fit that description struggles being accepted in their victimhood :)
So I think her idea was interesting… the execution was a bit difficult though :/

Having seen students fall for teachers and become obsessed this makes sense. To people who want to pretend this doesn't exist, you are kidding yourselves. One party becomes obsessed, other party is initially flattered and goes along with it, teacher has an epiphany and realises they have gone to far, ends it, first party becomes enraged and tries to force them together. If not, then it's "if i can't have you, no one can". This happens in regular relationships too. It touches on good issues but should have tried to be a social commentary more than a thriller.

    hm, a few things
I don't think that everybody necessarily needs to be able to follow the vocabulary. That is a stylistic choice for the speech pattern of the characters made specifically to highlight that aspect of the characters. It's not in itself a characterization but it contributes.
Two, in a teacher-student situation, the difference between 17 and 18 is truly just relevant for the slight mitigation of the s##t storm they expect but it's not like we magically transcend into maturity when three months pass and we go from 17 to 18. Legally, this might be a whole other thing but morally that doesn't change anything about *how* wrong it is considered morally.
And three, I don't necessarily think it's wrong to leave it open because sometimes that is how things work out. That might not be right but a film does not have to depict everything turning out a specific black or white way. Same for the "perfect victim" comment. I don't think it's nefarious or anything. It's just mean to highlight that, while the teacher ultimately always *has* to be blamed for flirting with his students because he has the moral obligation to not engage in romantic/sexual relationships with his students, the way that the victim behaves can vary in terms of how they interact. Again, that does not lift blame from the teachers, at all! But there are cases where it's much more black and white and the groomers are much more aware and intentional.
I find this interesting in comparison to the Lolita discourse where the (mostly American) public has decided that a) the book is an endorsement of Humbert and b) that Lolita is somehow seductive and her style is something to be emulated with reference to her, both of which are so weird. Even if Lolita might want to "try on" a seductive personality, that in no way implies that she is seducing HH. And HH, in turn, is not attracted to her and developing a relationship with *her* as much as she just happens to fit into the pattern he seeks out because he is a sick man.
So in contrast to that, this film tries to reflect a realistic situation that does happen where the whole thing is a bit more complex. Again, that doesn't make it better.
Ultimately, I'd have to go with Ebert here and say we shouldn't judge a film based on what it's telling but how. And that is a whole other question and I tend to agree with you in that it's not that good.
But many of these films generally suffer from not being able to adequately capture the issues.
I remember watching a movie in Germany that was from like the 90s where a student and her uni professor are having an affair and she sort of unintentionally tells her acting teacher about it and then an entire storm of cancellation breaks out, he is accused of raping her, and that "ruins" his life. That movie was well acted but poorly made, yet it treated the complexities much better. The guy was clearly to blame, he himself decided to use his position, which is what attracted her to him, and he chose to jeopardize his marriage, so he's to blame. But of course he wasn't a rapist. So, again, more complex and realistic than this...

@@smalltownstart I really hoped for a better script with this movie.
A girl from my Latin class in high school ended up marrying our Latin teacher, although I don't know when that started. It was a 20 year age-gap though, so it was a bit odd. But there was no sign of any sort of favoritism or flirting, and for all I know, they didn't get together until way later, so it might have been "ok."
It still gave me the ick (which might be unfair, they are still married and have kids and she's fine and seems happy, so I'm trying not to be too judgmental of their life now) but I also thought I'd like for someone to delve more into the gray area of something like that happening with a bit more complexity and depth of character, and also without gimmicks. Miller's Girl ultimately felt a bit too gimmicky, which made it have less substance.

I do not want to appear as condescending, but I think many people reviewing this movie have allowed their personal bias to get in the way of getting the juice from this movie. At times, I believe the script speaks over most people's heads. The vocabulary in some scenes can put some viewers in an uncomfortable head space.
I look at this movie and saw sharp storytelling with beautiful imagery. Every scene, even the perceived "silly" ones, added to the overall storyline. Many have mentioned that there were only two students and two teachers with speaking parts, but what could any other student or teacher provide to the story? Teacher - Student relationships are by nature private and hidden, it would seem to be a waste of runtime to include others.
The Cairo Sweet character arc is what I believe holds all aspects of this movie in place. Has this story been told before? Yes. But since when is that a disqualifer? Almost every Rom-Com I have seen in the last 40 years is some take of a Jane Austin novel.

    • @smalltownstart
      @smalltownstart  11 місяців тому +12

I appreciate your insight. I think you’ve done a good job at appreciating the positive qualities of the movie, because I do agree that there are several things to be enjoyed about it. And I do think the writing of Bartlett comes from a lot of talent - excited to see what else she does.
You’re right that rom-coms haven’t offered a new plot in decades, but rom-coms have a specific purpose and they execute it (often) very well. For this dynamic, commentary of controversial teacher/student relationship, there’s really no overarching purpose of exploration - I simply think the movie could have been a lot better - especially when choosing this topic in 2024. I was genuinely excited for a thought-provoking spin off of something we’ve seen before, but it felt like they just kinda dropped it.
I don’t think Cario’s character arc was convincing. She felt like an absolutely dry character the whole time who was only interested in one or two things. Other characters in the movie would have given an insight into their life, community, and social standing. It also would have just been more fun.
I don’t know. It’s definitely to each their own on this movie and that’s to be expected. I suppose I was just a bit disappointed because I could see potential.

It gave me a 90s/early 2000s “young people being witty and clever, Dawson’s Creek-eque” vibe that, BARELY, worked back THEN, for the people who found it to be rather unrealistic…Add THAT to the fact that THAT sort of “relaxed” lowkey/highkey flirty/barely a a boundary, crossing the line interaction between teacher and student would NOT be going down, in THIS day and age.

I looked up reviews for this after watching it expecting it to be a compelling thriller (can you hear my hysterical laughter through the screen?) because I just had to know if I was the only one who found it almost unbearably cringe, and thankfully I can see that I’m in good company. I saw someone else in the comments compare the dialogue to Dawson’s Creek and YES, I kept trying to pinpoint what this reminded me of, and that’s it! It’s Dawson’s Creek if it had been written by a pretentious playwright during the tumblr era. I agree with everything you said, frankly, and I’m stunned by some of the comments you’re getting from people who insist that you missed the point of the movie-or what was supposed to be the point of the movie. I think we all got it, but that doesn’t make the execution any less cringe. I also agree with you that some of the shots and the soundtrack were beautiful (and the bugs! The bugs were really pretty), and I can see how for some people that created an enjoyable atmosphere that might have overshadowed everything else, making them very defensive. However, I think that those settings and shots were ‘twilight pretty', if that makes any sense. I also enjoyed them, but I don’t know that they’re enough to indicate that the writer/director is sufficiently skilled to make something good in the future. She would probably have done an excellent job at directing a CW paranormal teen drama in the early 2010s. In any case, I agree with everything you said, especially the fact that the language was pretentious and meant to make the writer sound well-read, but it’s not effective storytelling. I wish it were a parody of how some pretentious pseudo-intellectuals write/sound, but unfortunately I think the writer is one and simply lacks self-awareness. I’m sorry that some people are upset, but I was happy to see you standing your ground. I think this is a very honest and insightful review, and it just earned you a new subscriber!

The cinematography was the only part I honestly enjoyed, the setting was such a cool vibe ruined by another Lolita story🖐 also ever since Wednesday i knew Hollywood would keep casting Jenna in borderline pedo films bc shes 21, but lets be honest she looks 15. "But the story is supposed to be a representation of young feelings-" no. It felt like cuties 2.0 😭
Give. Us. A. Realistic. Film. Not of some teens thirsting over an old man but of a student that has no idea what to do after graduation and going on an adventure. No cliché relationship drama. Just vibes and the sudden changes of life.
Lmao i needed to rant on this bc the kiss scene had me say " WTAF DID I JUST WATCH-"
The only morale of the film i got was "parents dont leave your underaged children alone in a mansion for years"

This movie tried to subvert expectations by blurring the lines of victim and abuser. But it would be an honest surprise to see a movie where adults are accepting of youths but still acting responsibly. It feels good to watch young characters grow from their experiences without showing them being exploited for their naivety. I think "Juno" told a similar story without making people watch Jason Bateman kiss Elliot Page.

It is just such a pecular decision to make this as a first big production as a writer. Definetely a bold choice.
Also, the actress playing the wife has a Polish name so don't worry, it is very understendable that you have a problem with reading it. You red the name correctly. The surname is pronounced almost like Dominick but you have a 'tch' sound like in stretch between 'Domin' and 'ick' (Domin-tch-ick).

🎞I would classify *Miller's Girl* as an erotic horror movie, a modern retelling of the classic fairytale *Lil' Red Ridinghood* where the wolf is clearly identified as the antagonist from the beginning. However, in this movie Cairo is seen as the ‘wolf’, which blurs the lines between protagonist and antagonist, making the narrative much more intricate and thought-provoking.
👉 *Miller's Girl* could be seen as a modern cautionary tale, warning of the dangers of deception and crossing boundaries.

Thank you. I will not be watching this. It sounds like this movie was exactly the pretentious crap that some play write puts out to get noticed. Instead of something meaningful or impactful, it's just a bunch of wordy nonsense that real people would never say in real life. I went to UF and my poor teachers were abused enough. High School was worse. They were beaten down and underpaid, and really sad and bitter. I would never waste my time trying to seduce them for an admission letter to another school. She is the perfect villain. That's super f*#ked up. She is evil. He's a perfect victim cause I don't care about him being victimized. What is the point of movies. Can't these film makers devote time to better screen plays. I would rather see anything else other than what you described.

👍Exactly, Cairo’s character in Miller’s Girl is a complex one. Her exterior as an underaged teen masks her true nature, making her the perfect villain. She manipulates others with her innocence, all the while harboring darker intentions.
🎭This duality makes her character incredibly intriguing and adds a layer of depth to the narrative. It’s a testament to the author’s skill in character development.
👩‍🦯However, this subtlety might be missed by some readers, mostly women, who only see her outward persona.

Also, in defense of chamber dramas: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf has 4 actors stuck mostly in one room, and in the movie briefly going to a diner, but it's amazing.
Maybe I'm just old (I was born in the late 80s) and people nowadays just don't like chamber drama at all. But if there's still people who like those movies, I'd like to say that it's not just the fact that there's not many characters that makes it bad.
And connected to this, while I think Mamet's heart was very much not in the right spot, but since it predated metoo by A LOT (1992), he *might* be almost forgiven (?), his play Oleanna is masterful at presenting a "who's right and is it just miscommunication or malicious intent?" type of plot in the first part. And it's also a 2-header, which worked well on stage and somehow not that much on screen, although possibly not just because of the setting and small number of character.

It could've been interesting to show how a young lady weaponize the MeToo movement and want to destroy a man for rejecting her, but Hollywood no longer has the guts to call out lefty movements or bad behavior from women anymore. The whole movie walks on eggshells, and we just get this flat movie that goes nowhere. Disclosure from 1994 starring Michael Douglas takes on that issue and shows how men can also be victims of women or the system in general but like I said, Hollywood in 2024 would never make that movie.

A lot of dialoque is not bad if it's not just exposition. Also I just don't think there was That much big words in it, just enough to showcase the big part of them being writers and convaying emotions in a very spiky precise way because they would for each other (neither talks like that to other people in it really).
I think the third act is gone over a tad bit too fast for pacing, but the movie is clearly about writing/writers... and experiences/feelings attached to the experience, whatever they are. Rather than being Just about a scandaloush relationship which is the catalyst, that could essentially be whatever of experiencing something raw and new to inspire writing. That's the point which I think many doesn't seem to grasp. Not so much a love-story than a story about writers.
You go into so many famous writers background and there is endless interesting stories in their life. Actually many artists. It is about her journey to get her first one to have something to pull from to write, an experience. From where the thing starts quite literally in the plot. Even tho left somewhat ambigious, I do beleave they did do it. Because the essay thing rattles him that bad afterwards (for the implications of instability of having to make bold choices or hope for the best). Rattles him because reads it thru like from his lense of photographig memory and it's not just being a fantasy, then he just does not go with it while being miserable with his wife and is scared about having feelings for so young woman. Also not being convincing at saying it didn't happen, like trying to dissosiate from it all together. Then at the same time she Does go to the schoolboard with a revenge of a heart-break (says she is a villain, hero, this and that) but also to give him the chance to write again and to also take from the experience also all if he have guts. After he once very brutally showcased of not having nerve to go in the end after crossing lines. Like he could have ended working for the school, move out with her and whatever it would end up to be in time or not to be. He does not take that, but does take up writing afterwards for the slate being swiped clean for him and having something to say. Not being a coward anymore about having gone there. They both see the talent in each other.
He kinda was also just in a limbo to write because what, you are gonna make a book about your wife being horrible towards him while with her? With continuous barrage of discouragment. Everything being routined and new experiences are becoming older, having been done this and that in his mind and that's it. Which is part of the don't then be a coward after crossing a line theme when he starts to spin out of control after having gone for an experience since clearly not being happy, especially when kinda holding something fragile. If being the older and wiser then knowing to not to do it if cannot with being soft with it.
If they had ended up together I think the theme would be even more lost than it already seem to be for expectations and news about the movie. It could've been what people expected aka a romance story that challenges conventional norms and babying 18 year olds in some senses while not others (yeah sure make an of) when yes, the choices are yours.. They both act immature about the dynamic at times weather 18 or 50. Both make a big move to a big horrible consequence to the other. Because yes 18 is legal and she might be mature for her age, it still isn't like as an 50 year old being so brutal about the aftermath of handling what haf happened won't come as a bigger shock to a younger person as a it's new experience (as in the dialoque she narrates like ripped skin off of her etc.). So she feels that it is matched with telling to the board while still giving him a choice to prove to himself that he can choose to take away something from it too and not be a coward and write. As he does. It also goes into the theme talked with insects of life eating life to stay alive. She was not carefull with her aka "ate her from inside" and she kinda did the same to him for not understanding his complex situation and it created the mess. Also from the mess him starting to write/live again.

    Winnie suggested the project.
Cairo took on the suggestion. However, during the time she was making the project with the overall intent of getting Johnathan in trouble, she started to develop true feelings for him, to the point of her feelings for him.being stronger than her essay she wanted to write for her entrance to Yale. When Johnathan rejected her, she went crazy and turned in her essay to the Vp of the school out of revenge for him rejecting her. As far as 2 young girls with high GPAs, it is common for young girls to fall in love with older men, especially their school teachers. The whole entire "thrill of it all" fantasies they had was a good way for them to escape their rigged GPA mentalities and their so-called "boring" Tennessee environment in THEIR minds 🤦🏾‍♂️

This is just my assumption of what you meant: I think people believe Cairo’s achievements and arc is that she sparks interest and desire in Miller’s life again and that that’s the point of the story - since he hasn’t written since his book was published and he’s not the person his wife fell in love with anymore. I get that - they both have desire and passion in the movie and it’s this inappropriate relationship that brings it out. My issues is- why. Why did we need that type of relationship and this story in general. Who is this for? Writers? To lust over the boasting language and feel the tension of something that could be bad but somehow we sympathize with? I just don’t think there was anything revolutionary about any aspect of this movie. If I’ve made the wrong assumption please correct me.

Awful review. You interpreted everything from your own bias. The dreamy sequences you found so laughable leave the plot open. Did the s@x happened, or was it just a kiss, and then here girl there's your phone. If the s@x didn't happened and was all a fantasy of Cairo's then why would the kiss in the rain be real ? You need a hero and villains but the movie doesn't give anything. You think the coach was the righteous one because he didn't indulged in the s@xting ? He crossed the line when he was flirting with his student and gave her his phone number, whatever he says to himself. The end goal was making Miller write again and Cairo have a good submission for Yale. In the last sequence he waits her outside the court, she cries but then smiles victorious like she won him eventually cause he was there for her.
Yes the dialogues wasn't realistic for an 18yo but she is a "writer"... Also all the movie is SO BEAUTIFUL, Jenna in that dress with those shots is Hollywood masterpiece. As a movie it has a nice flow. The chemistry of them also is was what makes you feel so uncomfortable. Like being present in a moment where you shouldn't. Amazing acting. 7.5/10

5:15 okay that’s where my distaste stems from, I felt like from the trailer they weren’t out to turn the audience entirely against the relationship, and such a quote confirms my worry.
I guess the goal is to have you believe he’s not as much of a villain and she’s not that much of a victim (or maybe vice versa if that’s where your head is at) TERRIBLE stance to take on subject she’s writing. You should be acknowledging this can happen to young girls but showing a far better way of dealing with these types of emotions. I heard another reviewer say “he found himself kinda rooting for them” Some weird ass shit going on here, the audience being made more accepting of this clearly inappropriate dynamic/relationship..18(21)50(52)..and this intention was made into a film, with a star studded cast (ones you would have a hard time seeing as villains and victims) What makes it through Hollywood blows my mind sometimes. What happens to the young girls that watch this if that’s how you paint the relationship? Do you think they will come to an understanding that feeling attraction is an expected part of growing up, but that not everyone you’re attracted to at a time is right for you to be with at that time? Will that be before or after they make advances on those feelings?…Based on this movie….

it's because we're in an age where people would rather not have unpleasant things in movies, even though they happen. The new Mean Girls was heavily criticised because the girls were so nice. Why? Because they didn't want them saying mean things, despite the fact that the girls are meant to be mean. This upsets people because of the content but it does happen, and it highlights that it is not appropriate. I would have reworked the script to remove some of the "thriller" elements and explored it more as a social issue. I think exploring Cairo's mental health might have supported the plot more.

maybe the whole point was FOR people to actually learn new words. Maybe FOR people to read more - watch less.
Plot was perfect. True to life... but I really don't think younger people like this reviewer might have quite enough life experience for this to resonate - yet. Personally, loved the scene of him in his car while it's raining. "Don't Stand So Close to Me", by the Police, anyone? Critiques like this always kind of kill me - I'd love to people produce something comparable themselves, let alone muster enough incentive. I thought it was a fine film that thoroughly did it's job - made me feel VERY uncomfortable. Kudos.

    • @smalltownstart
      @smalltownstart  9 місяців тому +2

I do believe this would have been a much better book than a movie - but I don't think there was any real intention of teaching people new words - just used as a demonstration of how smart Cairo was (and therefore, how smart the author is). And I also don't think a movie is the best way to convince people to watch less.
I rewatched it last night now that it's on Netflix just to make sure my opinions still remain, and they do.
Unrelated, but I always find it odd when people, like yourself, comment about me but not directly to me when it's my video you're commenting on and I get the notification. I don't really care, it's just always strange to read.
I also don't believe my opinion of this film will change with age (for reference, I'm 25). I actually think I might dislike it more when I'm Mr.Miller's age because I hope to never be him.
I understand your viewpoint and do see the quality in the movie. It's trying to do a specific thing, it shows a love for language, it paints a picture of exhausted motivation being reignited by an inappropriate desire. And it's trying to give sexual agency to the mature youth. It probably could have been a great movie, but majority would agree it was not.
I loved how the scenes felt so natural in their slowness and it devoted a lot of time to just two people talking - that is true to life. I get how it was true to life because this really does happen - I just don't see any deep value in watching it play out.
I usually don't write such long responses, so I'm sorry for that. But as for having enough incentive to produce something myself - as you have challenged people to do - I self-published my first book at 18 years old, and am currently living out my dream of being a full-time artist. I may not have the qualifications to critique film, but opinions are opinions. I'm sorry my review was something that kills you - I just believe that Jade Halley Bartlett's obvious talent was wasted on this story.
"Don't Stand So Close to Me" was a very deliberate choice of soundtrack - more like a slap in the face

    1) Cairo isn't the victim; she's the predator. She's obsessed with her creative writing teacher. From the beginning she admitted that she needs her longing to have meaning and the only way she believes to achieve this is by sacrificing her teacher. For the exact same reason old men have been harvesting virgin grrlz.
*Cairo Sweet* : Literature is my solace in the solitude. And writing is my only escape, because, you see, I've never left the edges of this town. It's positively gothic, really. Lonely girl longs to be meaningful. Lonely girl longs to be loved. Books make longing to seem romantic, but it's awful. It's greedy, and I wear longing like a fucking veil.
*Winnie* : Older men have been harvesting virginity since the dawn of time.
🧐Even in the movie she tells mr. Miller that she sees herself as the most dangerous creature when walkin' through the scary woods.
*Jonathan Miller* : Don't you get scared, walking through those woods?
*Cairo Sweet* : I'm the scariest thing in there.
    2) What actually happened and what Cairo has written for her assignment are 2 different things. Cairo's story is based on what actually happened between Cairo & Jonathan, but he never went beyond a kiss? Jonathan actually wanted to stop the affair, but Cairo threatened to make it public in order for her essay to have meaning.
So Jonathan wanted to stop, but Cairo forced her will onto him by goin' public; which is the purest definition of rape. In the narrative of *Miller’s Girl* the power dynamics shift. The teacher wanted to stop the relationship, but Cairo exerted her will by goin' public, which is a form of violation.
🧠Instead of bein' the 'usual' victim of the male gaze this movie is all about female agency and control? I'm not sayin' the teacher is innocent, but that the student is the main culprit. All I'm suggesting is that the movie subverts the ‘usual’ narrative of the female character being a victim of the male gaze, and instead presents a story about female agency and control.
😑My interpretation challenges traditional narratives and offers a fresh perspective on the dynamics of power and responsibility in relationships.

Very well said (: and I agree with your interpretation and fully believe that was the goal of the movie - I simply believe they could have pulled it off a lot better and I’m sad that they didn’t because what they do have, to me, was real cringe

🤓Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but since I'm an INTJ, 'an emotional robot,' who sees the world through my analytical aproach it lead me to focus on different aspects of the movie compared to others. Since I'm able to suppress my own emotion so it won't hinder my logic it's hard for me to judge whether the artist succeeded in her goal, cauz even had the movie been cringe to me it wouldn't have affected my analysis of the movie.

She is canonically 17 and barely legal in the film. He should not have pursued it in the first place. Why do men never want to take responsibility for their dicks. Someone needs to put you on a watchlist 👮

🖐Cairo pursued Mr. Miller and not the other way around.
"Why do men never want to take responsibility for their dicks."
😑I agree Mr. Miller should be punished, but so should Cairo cauz she initiated the seduction.
"Someone needs to put you on a watchlist 👮‍♀"
🤨Someone should put you on a watchlist, cauz you gave Cairo a free pass, despite all her actions bein' premedidated while Mr. Miller's weren't.
