- It's time to head east on the Meet the Germans road trip. Rachel digs into local cuisine, culture and language and finds out just how much the region has been influenced by its relatively recent past as part of the German Democratic Republic.
On her journey around Germany, Rachel wants to discover the unique traditions, characteristics and culture that the different regions have to offer. Check out part one on northern Germany here: • Northern Germany: Meet... and part two on southern Germany here: • Southern Germany: Meet...

I truly wish Rachel spoke more German. She's just SO darn good at it. National treasure! ♥
Yes, but her English is so much better ❤️☺️
@@_Yannex English is her native language you know....
@@atlanta2076 Really😱😱😱
I love meet the germans roadtrip series. Eventhough the whole MTG episodes give knowledge about Germany, this series really shows how diverse Germany is and how the image we have from overseas about the country is so wrong due to media and stuff. For more channels like this!! Love from Argentina!!🇦🇷❤🇩🇪
Thanks Andres!
It's just not Bavaria everywhere.
Rachel and the DW have made an amazing team. Their work is super good.
Thank you!
Please Reply: When Germany is so beautiful ( very beautiful indeed); Why Germany is always itching for a war in beautiful Europe??
first war : German is the richest and beautiful country in Europe and War happens
2nd war: German is the richest and beautiful country in Europe and War happens
Now: 2022 German is the richest and beautiful country in Europe and War is on the corridor
Is it really bad for humanity for Germans to be beautiful and rich ???
Answer DW if you dare so....
@@gordonfraser2253 If you read up on the start of the First World War, you would know that Germany did not start the war. And to give Germany any kind of responsibility for Rissland's attack on Ukraine is nonsense.
@@harrydehnhardt5092 WW1 It was an ally of wealthy Germany from Tripple Alliance who declared War and German waisted no time to grab the opportunity of war (I mentioned Germany is always Itching for a war)
In current scenario Who oversaw Minsk 2014? Who was suppose to implement it () ??
Who is "Offended Liverwurst"?
Which "Offended Liverwurst" spent $100 bn in Europe on 26 Feb (just 2 days after 24th Feb 2022) on weapons of mass destruction on european soil? Which country illegally nationalise the Business of another country?
(Again Germany is itching for a war when it has little bit of money!!
@@harrydehnhardt5092 Why delete the true facts then ?
I love how I, as a native German, can even learn from this series. The entire part about the Sorbs was completely new to me. I've heard about Sorbs, but didn't really know anything about them so far.
Ich auch nicht noch nie von denen gehört freue mich auf den letzen Part meine Heimat die Pfalz aka West -Germany
visit Bautzen!
They share same tribe name as Serbs from south-east Europe. The tribe split so one part moved west and other moved south probably depending on preferences towards warmth and sunshine 🌞 And whole east part of Germany has a huge slavic influence although only one tribe survived till now. Even west German city Lübeck has slavic root in the name. German words for border and cucumber are slavic by origin.
Aber die Zahl der Sprecher ist maßlos übertrieben. Es sind bis zu 30000.
@@aurelije The Slavs just adopted German in the course of many centuries.
Having lived in Berlin since 2013 most of my vacations have been spent in Brandenburg, Sachsen and Meck Pom on my bicycle, following the countless Radwege. I never want to leave this place; it is so beautiful and peaceful. It's also pretty good value.
🚲❤
I stayed 1 year in Jena, Thüringen, for studying there. I loved the East, cities and marvellous nature landscapes :) so schön ❤
You couldn't have picked a better example for the "Berliner Schnauze" as the guy in the yellow shirt :D
@Frogster 😂 Wonderful, isn't he? Cheeky and Quick-witted ...
Always a good day with a Rachel video. I will be visiting this area soon so this is particularly helpful.Vielen Dank!
My heart is situated in East Germany ...
Love Thüringer Klöße mit Rouladen, Rostbratwurst, Baumkuchen ( from Salzwedel is absolutely a topic on his own to show in the future.)
The Sorbs ( Die Sorben) is a special slavic minority ...their food is special ( missed your opinion on that , Rachel) and the way they colour rheir Easter Eggs with a special wax technique is splendid.
I think before Christmas you should visit Lauscha in Thuringia ...Christmas boubels ( Weihnachtskugeln) are invented over there a few centuries ago.
Worth it to show on your channel.
I m happy the East was also shown here ...sorry to say but I ve got the impression you often show the West of the country and neglectingvthe eastern part.
Non of both sides should be neglected.
But count your videos of East and West ...you will find out.
greetings from an East German expad
( my parents moved away ...I had no choice)
Always a delight to watch Rachel's very entertaining videos.
Thanks DW and Rachel for another great Meet the Germans vlog looking forward to Part 4 of this series.
Absolutely excellent. Quite an informative presentation!
Great video again. A lot of good information. Extremely well done, Rachel. Can´t wait for the next video. 😊😊
Rachel's reports are always a viewing must. Informative and entertaining.
Wonderful to see Frau Breuer and Herr Goll as well-you three make a marvelous team! Vielen Dank! I watch these as soon as I know about them.
5 docus in 1 - amazing quality!
This series is wonderfully educational
I am really enjoying this series and I am learning a lot…….I hope Rachel and team can take more road-trips in Germany
Vielen herzlichen Dank an Rachel, ihr Team und DW! Ihr habt spezielle Moderator*innen und Rachel ist eine der besten!
I usually enjoy ever episodes of Meet the German by Rachel…. She is so good at this.
Every video makes me want to go (back) to Germany. I lived there in the 70's and 80's and have visited a couple three times since then, but every video makes me realize how little I actually saw when I was there. Saving up for a trip! Oh and the music at the beginning and end of this video was so fun! I was dancing along!
No Leipzig? Hmmm, you missed one opportunity here. :-D
Leipzig got a big role in the classical music episode so we thought we'd give some other places a look in :P but I hope you saw that the Thomananchor made a quick appearance!
I was in Germany in September with my cousin. Her first trip overseas. I've been to Germany several times and felt that she needed to see the highlights. We flew in and out of Berlin. Drove west and spent the first night in Weimar. We really liked the town. The remainder of the trip was Rhine/Mosel, Romantic Road, and Alps. After watching this video, I have a desire to see some of these other sites. In the past, I have been to Dresden and Gorlitz.
Oh your beautiful narration and rich content. One cannot watch while eating, one must watch and listen to enjoy and grasp it all.
Request for Rachel, please suggest some books on German History.
Can't wait to see the next part.
Another great presentation. My relatives are mainly in and around Berlin, Potsdam and Werder, so this road trip was like visiting my second home. Great to see some of our frequented spots get a mention. My wife & I will be over there again late November, so we'll be sure to check our some of the other spots featured in this road trip. Thanks again Rachel & the DW team..
Very well done! Great short trip!
Great video and great series! 😍
wow thanks for sharing. I learned a lot!
So glad!
I always liked the editing of the MTG videos, but these roadtrip videos are even more impressive! How much planning ahead it must‘ve taken… I would love a little behind the scenes sneak peek some day 😋
Congratulations to the MC here; Rachel. She did excellent job, presentable and knowledgeable of what she doing. This make the whole program more interesting and blend well with the stories! Couldn't wait for my future trip to all over Deutschland 🇩🇪
Keep it up Rachel and DW 🥇🔥
Cool vid! Thanks Rachel.
I love this video. Thank you.
This road has been great to watch as I am married to a East German girl it been nice to learn more about her family culture. I never realized how much different culture there is and you covering the history is great. Thank you To you and the crew😊
Nice job Rachel!
Beautiful! More Rachel!
Rachel you are great !
Great job!
I was privileged to stay, for three weeks, with a family in Chemnitz many years ago. Saxony is wonderful, a great place to visit.
I think Rachel is the best to do this show. She is smart, funny, tasty story teller, elegant speaker, provide useful tipps and so much more. 👍
thank you DW .. never heard of the Sorb culture before this video
Excellent video with info. I lived in Germany for 18 years, but never knew about Sorbs.
Rachel 👏🏻 Superb.... Details like a doc in a Shorts like Video ...👍🏻
Awesome Video with great cities and it's culture. Thanks for making this Video possible with great informations. 👍
Thanks for watching and stay tuned!
Rachel, thank you once again and Grrüße von Leipsisch x
I was born and raised in North Rhine-Westphalia. My grandparents and my father fled from Mecklenburg Vorpommern to the West when the Wall was built. I am positively surprised that even I was able to learn quite a bit. I had never heard of the Sorbs before. Great video, respect!
Germany has so much to offer in the way of culture, sights, food and history! I've been living here for over 30 years and still have so many places on my bucket-list. I really appreciate you having done a separate video for each of the four directions on the compass rather than just East vs. West.
One thing that I am very glad about, is that the young generation (under 30s) no longer identify as Ossi/Wessi. Germany has always been one nation throughout their lifetime. That gives me hope that one day, there will be nobody left with a wall in their minds (die Mauer in den Köpfen).
Love it!
Absolutely love your videos Rachel!
A friend of mine moved to Hamburg a few years back and I’ve only visited there & Berlin, defo have plans to travel across Germany in the near future🚘🇩🇪
Keep up the great content! Love from the U.K. 🇬🇧
Thanks Tommy, there are so many great spots to visit 🙂
Sehr gut!
3:05 What a lovely background 😯🌺 Great location!
Quedlinburg is very pretty 🙂
Quedlinburg and Görlitz are the prettiest cities of Germany, I`d say as a German (maybe next to Lindau and Passau in Bavaria), but unfortunately many Germans aren`t really familiar with the Eastern parts of the country.
Really inspired me to go to see Dresden :)
I love these videos but have to play them back at 75% because of the rapid fire editing. Thanks!
A new book by Katja Hoyer talks about the East in a positive manner, loved the book "Beyond the wall"!!
Very interesting. I wished it was longer. Rachel should get a bigger format👍
@ Adi Graf Positas (😁) We'll let her know!
You could spend a week in Dresden alone! Love it so much I'm going back in a week 💜
Rachel, you should do a whole video on Bauhaus. Or maybe even more.
We'll be covering it more on Instagram for sure :)
Gropius and many of his colleagues ended up living in the Boston area. Many taught at the Museum of Fine Arts School.
Where was Leipzig on your tour? - But truly this series is amazing! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 And I see you have a video dedicated to Leipzig. so I'll head over there. Cheers! ❤
0:00 I ❤️ Quedlinburg and its old town hall at 3:03
That was very interesting
Thanks, David!
Topic Spreewald and sorbs:
Cucumbers and pickles.
There are 2 different kind of pickles. The ones with vinegar and the salty ones. Many people think it's the same, but it's a huge difference and most times you love one and hate the others. I love the salted, but most people like the vinegar. If there is any kind of flavour except of dill (Pfeffergurke, Senfgurke...) it is vinegar.
Also famous is Sauerkraut from this region.
I love this series of Meet the Germans Road trip. I wonder if they used the €9 tickets to produce it over the summer
i kind of wish you had focussed on each state a little more. saxony-anhalt was only mentioned once and was shown for no more than 4-5seconds 😢 it sometimes gets forgotten, even more than saarland or bremen 😅
Enjoyed this Video on the Eastern Part of Germany. For me from India the famous names are Carl Zeiss and Leipzig Fairs. Got to know more about the Culture .
I forgot to add another famous personality from Eastern part of Germany. Cannot forget the famous Figure Skating Champion Katarina Wit.
Dear DW reduced the speed of your commentary. Even though I visited most of these places, but I love to watch DW programme.
My grandpa was born near Erfurt and I want to visit Thuringia one day to see the land of my ancestors.
The fact that Erfurt still has a bridge with buildings on it is so cool, just like the old London bridge.
Thuringia is looking forward to your visit :)
I hihly recommend you to visit Erfurt. In my opinion it is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany.
You should take a road trip to the lost territories to visit Stettin, Danzig, Breslau, and finishing off in Koenigsberg.
Very nice. I've only been to East and West Berlin in 1973/74 when I was 18/19. John, California
Like 496 parabéns....
Muito bom e muito bem planejado seu documentário ficou show..... Já me inscrevi e recomendo
Abraços a todos que fazem essa nação maravilhosa
I love the east. Greetings from Cologne
I was today years old when I found out that the Sorbs exist here in Germany
Should we consider that as a compliment?... 😋
1:19, yep that was basically my face when i tried it haha
You were in Meißen and I missed it. 😢
Beautiful town!
What states do you find Sorbians? And what percentage of population there? Is Saxony more conservative compared to northern eastern states like MV and Brandenburg and Saxony Anhalt?
10 min just flew by.
beste
Big salute to all my sorbian brothers and sisters from Serbia
We look forward to your visit to K-Town (Kaiserslautern) and the Landstuhl area. Plenty of history to discuss here in der R-P and neighboring Saarland. Vielen Dank für ein weiteres gut gemachtes Video, DW und Rachel. 🇩🇪 ❤
Schnell,aber gut!
But never forget: Order is a must!
Yaaay! Rachel is back. I guess she is traveling that's why she couldn't make it in the last video. ♥
This is one of the best and least judgmental documentations on the east German condition that I’ve ever seen. Well done
Thanks, JJ!
Part IV? When?
Quedlinburg 🤩
Love Germany, i really want to comeback and i don't know maybe live there :')
You are welcome
those _panelka_ buildings at 5:28 wouldn't look out of place in some Soviet states either
As always, a superb presentation!
Lots'a love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines!
1:43 is the most perfect Show Don't Tell depiction of Berliner Schnauze I've ever seen
😂
Magdeburg ❤
Regards to our Sorbian brothers from their southern brethren, the Serbs (:
What the guy in 4:15 say is so true. I like the fact when people are able to see and take part on their own blame in a society.
Despite the efforts from the government even if they haven’t been enough, many people in eastern states are super close-minded and unfortunately that makes them be a bit left behind in comparison to the rest of the country.
I didn't know that Germany hots other languages and culture, thanks DW for reporting these fantastic facts.
I admire you, Rachel. I am your pen friend.
Leider ist der Harz nicht mehr das, was er einmal war durch den Borkenfäfer. Mittlerweile sieht es rund um den Brocken und im Oberharz aus wie nach einem Atomangriff. :(
Sachsen ❤
Hi, Rachel! This is Jesse. How are you today?
Will the next episode be Mitte-Deutchland?
Please fill the Gap: North, South, East, ___ Stay tuned!
@@dweuromaxx west? that would be the whole Rhineland!
8:57 ist doch die Bastei oder?
It is!
I can see the intention behind the series -to show the diversity of regions in Germany. But cutting Germany formulaically into 4 quarters does the topic no sevice. It is over simplified and too much pigeonholing. Since much of the audience are foreigners the danger is that they could take it literally.
The colourful halftimbered houses in Quedlinburg, Saxony-Anhalt are common in the Harz region, e.g. also in Lower Saxony. But the pigeonholing put it in another quarter.
Just a few notes:
- (Upper) Saxon as a regional slang is spoken in much of Saxony and less than a quarter of Saxony-Anhalt and only in small areas in Thuringia. Their variant of German is called Thuringian.
- Martin Luther created a hybrid language borrowing from various central and southern regions, in order to make his bible translations understandable to as many people as possible. By doing this he also used the way office clerks WROTE in Meißen. This has little to do with the way people SPEAK on the street in Saxony today.
- the Bauhaus is also very much connected to the city of Dessau
- Sanssouci Palace is also in baroque style, this special version is called Late Baroque or Rococo
- actually Mecklenburg is rather known for its lake district than Brandenburg
Thanks @Henning Bartels !
Sometimes I think you know my plans… somehow the last few videos have coincided with my plans and interests! I was just in Thüringen and the people were so nice, quite apart from the beautiful sights and nature. I’m planning to explore more, as I‘ll be working in Arnstadt this December.
Ah glad we're in tune 😁
