Gibt es immer noch Unterschiede zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland? In der heutigen Folge sprechen wir sowohl mit Bürgern der ehemaligen Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik als auch mit Menschen, die nach der Wiedervereinigung geboren wurden. Are there still differences between East and West Germany? What about Vietnam? I think the similarities are there, although to be fair I don't think you guys would be as happy being in a communist/socialist country
I think Korea will be a totally different thing for the poor reason there are few Koreans left that know about the time that Korea was one unit, although being occupied by Japan. For Vietnam the separation has relatively short ( < 30 years ) and for Germany it has been short enough ( < 50 years ) for their (older) populations to still have a "connection" with "the other side". For Korea it is almost a full generation that has passed away.

Als eine Ausländerin , ich habe meinen Studium im Ost abgeschlossen und im West arbeite ich. Ich vermisse die nette und warme Leute im Ost. Hier im West ( eine große Stadt) allen Menschen sind zu beschäftigt mit ihrer Arbeit.
Meine alte Gastfamilie stammt aus Magdeburg (ich bin US-Amerikaner). Meine Gasteltern haben mir immer gesagt, dass sie nach der Wende die Freiheit der Bewegung und das Leben ganz generell gefeiert haben, aber auch gleichzeitig die Sicherheit und "sense of community" von der DDR-Zeiten vermisst.
Diese beiden Sachen sollten nicht im Widerspruch zueinander stehen...
Von wegen " Sicherheit " und " sense of community " ! Die Stasi hatte alle möglichen Informanten beschäftigt . Man konnte dem Nachbarn nicht trauen, und oft war ein Familienmitglied ein Informant .

Having lived in Berlin for 9 years you can immediately recognize the difference between the two groups even in this video. The former DDR Germans are somewhat proud of the heritage and strongly recognize their cultural difference from West Germans. West Germans in contrast have absolutely no relationship to the idea of East vs West, and typically neither know any East Germans nor have even thought of them as being different. This is why many were unable to even consider the question being posed. This even inside Berlin. Let alone in West Germany where the idea of the former East is pretty foreign.
I'm thinking about moving to that area (Brandenburg an der Havel) and I would love to hear an insight, do you feel safe there? We're worried about raising kids in a place where a lot of people voted Afd.
I actually can't say yes to that. East Germany is as save as other places. And west Germans are as prod of their heritage as east germans and they also have " Vorurteile " as the est germans have. Overall both sides are the same jut wit different colours the only real difference is the economy. And that is the factor that causes disputes even today. Because no-one actually tries to understand the other side.

In any case, I wanted to say Brandenburg is certainly safe. AfD voters are not 'unsafe'. However depending where you are from, you make experience varying degrees of difficulty integrating in Germany, and this is probably heightened in smaller cities and in the former East more so. That is just speculation though.

When I lived in Hannover as an exchange student in the 1980s, my host family made a big deal about the parents' "mixed marriage". She was a "norddeutscher " aus Lübeck and he was a "süddeutscher" aus Stuttgart. They talked a lot about the regional differences between nord and south. East Germany was still behind a wall.

Ja so sehe ich das auch. Wenn wir über West und Ost sprechen, müssen wir auch über Unterschiede zwischen einem Bayer und einem Hamburger sprechen. Oder darüber, dass die meisten Franken eher mit einem Thüringer klar kommen als mit einem Niedersachse.

As an Australian millennial this was very interesting to watch. We didn't really learn anything about the German unification or the Berlin wall in school and it was before my time. I only recently started learning about it when my German language studies started incorporating more history. I didn't realise how much it had influenced modern German culture and it was interesting to see the difference in opinion between just a couple of generations! Tolle Folge! Danke!

Western Germans just do not want to be part of an ethnic German "VOLK" what the Eastern Germans want to reestablish. East Germany is more like Poland or Hungary and the distance between West and East Germany increases daily. There is no common ground anymore. West Germans do not want an ethnic nationalist country. East Germans want that.

Ich habe in DRESDEN studiert für einen Jahr, 5 Jahren Nach der Vereinigung. Leute waren super. There was an incredible sense of community. They would leave coffee machines and plates in the lobby with a note: feel free to use me if you need me. Very helpful for foreigners. I now live in the USA and I miss the honesty and straightforwardness of Germans dearly. I miss Europe. Period! This weekend I found a Russian supermarket and was in heaven! Was able to practice my two words I know: thank you and very good! 😀
I would love to know how people would respond to the question: "How do you feel about foreigners attempting to speak German when visiting the country?" You may have already done an episode on that, so if so, forgive me. I couldn't find a video that asked that question to people directly. I know that you have touched on it here and there other questions, but not as a stand alone question. I think that could be really helpful so that those of us who are wanting to try can have a better idea of what to expect in general. Thanks for considering it!
I can tell you that I just started learning German when I went to Germany two years ago. I was staying in a small town in the west. I spoke quite terribly but I made an effort and everyone was pleasant towards me. They did their best to speak with me and try to understand me since not many people spoke English (I think in small towns English isn't as common). I think as foreigners it's important to remember we are guests in the country, and even attempting to speak German is a respectful thing which is viewed positively. Overall I had a great experience. You will be treated a lot better than someone who goes to Germany and simply expects everyone else to speak your language. I hope that helps :)

you wanna get a touch of the difference? well I am from eastern Germany (formally GDR). Our Jobs are not as paid as good as it is in western part. Less western companies settle down here. But if, they pay good but demand that you name your children the companies name ...LOL fun
all german states paid for recovering the east by taxes until today! We should stop it, but government doesnt cut it off !!!
east germany is still poorer than west! Look at the houses when you drive through! Mor common Appartment buildings in east than west!
salaries and loans and wages are higher in west germany, but store prices are about the same.

A few years ago I was staying in Berlin at a hotel in Prenzlauer Berg and I spoke with my father (who lived nearly 30 years in Berlin) and when I said where I was staying he exclaimed “You are in the East !?” . The wall had already been down for more than 20 years but in his head West & East were still different places.

Das gibt es so wie hier in kaum einem anderen Land.
Bis heute hätte ich nie gedacht, dass ich jemals in den Easy German Videos Berlinerisch hören würde! 0:52 und 12:40 - Dieser Mann mit dem Schnurrbart und mit der Brille - was für Berlinerisch! Ich kenne es aus Comics „Berlin” (der Autor Jason Lutes) und aus Büchern über dem Detektiv Gereon Rath (der Autor Volker Kutscher).
Leider habe ich ihm fast kein einziges Wort verstehen können. Ich habe die Unterteilen lesen müssen, sonst wäre ich im Begriff total verloren.
Er hat ,,Berliner Schnauze" gemacht: ironisch-humorvoll, etwas scharf (,,pikant!")allerdings nicht böse gemeint!😊

I was born and raised in Düsseldorf (1960) and my mother was from Stettin. I left Germany in 1978 and my German is not so good anymore, but I still have family and friends there. When the wall came down and after, we've been discussing reunification issues. I'm kinda outside the box, looking in. What I see is, that west Germany, their lifestyle and culture were largely influenced by the USA, whereas east Germany was under USSR influence. I think that's what caused the real rift. East and West Germany have not yet found a common culture.
It was influenced by the USSR but in the current days the East seems more right-wing liberal and the west left-wing.
These differences were noticeable even before WW2.

I am English, my take as an Auslander learning German language and culture is that the differences between East and West far predate the split of the country and its redrawing of the borders in 1945. German speaking regions were independent states linked only by language for many centuries before 1870. Didn't Geothe say "Wo liegst Duetschland?". Is it where German is spoken or is it something stronger? Germany's borders and area have been fluid for centuries and we forgot that Kafka living in Prague wrote in German and Prague University taught in German.
Many other countries grapple with this - in Spain it is more stark with Basques, Galicians, Catalans Castilian's living in one nation state. In my own country while not obvious to outsiders the difference between the North and South is definately there and many put this down to the North being of Danish and Norse origin, and the South Anglo Saxon with then a strong Norman influence. Then you have the Celts in Wales and Cornwall! Then the Scottish issue is a whole other issue. Nation states are not as fixed and immutable as we think.
You’re not wrong, but traditionally speaking conflicts in Germany were more about the north vs the south rather than the west vs the east, so now we basically just „hate“ people in all 4 cardinal directions (I’m partly joking lol)
I'm eastern Europe origin I lived in both sides East and West Germany what can I say from my point eastern germans are very kind people. It's easy to find friends here or if you need some advice always will help you. And about West Germany (NRW) I can tell opposite..No matter you are polish from Baltic states or czech they will call you only "russian". If you are good educated with university degree you will find difficult good job here if you find some they will pay you till 30% less than for native. Job contracts only temporary and a lots mobbing at work. After living 3 years there I came back to East Germany, even less money I have but I'm happy here and I'm starting my own business here. BEST WISHES FOR EAST GERMANS!

Sveiki, Jan! I work in NRW, but I have different experience. Certainly no one ever though I'm Russian, albeit the general knowledge about Poland is not great there. On the other hand, local Germans are nowhere close to the German-stereotype still alive in Poland (stricly business, no private discussions at the office, no sense of humour). But somehow I feel more at home in Berlin than in Cologne.

When I travelled in Germany, a young woman from Dresden I met told me that she felt a strong difference, especially in terms of economic opportunities and problems of integration of the formerly eastern regions into the larger political structure. The things she told me were very similar to what the two younger eastern German women were saying in this video. Then, when I talked to a young man from the west, he told me that a lot of kids who grow up in the west like to go to eastern cities for university as a way of getting away from their families and trying something new, so it seems to me that at least among the young people I talked to there is still a sense of regional difference between east and west.
May I add that for some time after the Wall came down, Wessis were driving their Mercedes to the doorsteps of Ossis, and informing them to vacate. That sort of thing could ruffle a few feathers, no?
@untergeher wow that was strong. Really. Thanks. I watched a lot of UA-cam videos about the GDR. And came to the conclusion that it was an annexation, not a reunification. West Germans treated East Germans like invaders would do. They showed no respect and just imposed their rules.
@untergeher I'm a 21 year old Italian with parents and family in the South, but who grew up in the North. In my final year in the Italian Gymnasium they took us on a trip to Germany, 5 days long, by bus because we needed to move in order to visit the most important cities to Bauhaus (that was the main theme and connected pretty well to History of Art, a compulsory subject over here). Anyway, we went to Weimar, Berlin and then Dessau. It was first in some parts of Berlin (they took us on a tour to the Eastern popular housing parts and embraced the occasion to actually show what the communist East architecturally and consequently socioeconomically attempted to reach) and then in Dessau that I really felt a desolation like in some God forgotten towns of the Italian South. Mind you, the German East-West gap is much narrower and in fact it was all cleaner, better kept and greener, but you couldn't see a soul around. I just felt the resignation I could breathe in some God forgotten Southern towns. I do understand what's like to be left behind and how sad it is to look at your home left in shambles, be it socially, economically or physically.
Eastern people are mostly Slavic and arent German thats why they behave diffrent than Western Germans who are original germans and Germanic you can read the History of eastern Germany all Slavic tribes came from poland and chechlowakoa

Am Wochenende war in Berlin und immer wenn ich in Berlin irgendwohin gehe, begegne ich etwas Historisches. Zum Beispiel, mein Hostel war in Prenzlauer Berg, von dort bis Hauptbahnhof bin ich zu Fuß gegangen und hab diesen Berliner Mauerweg getroffen. Bernauer Straße war so beeindruckt, dass ich beim jedem Schritt Gänsehaut bekam.
Das war aber wirklich eine der besten Episoden, ein sehr interessantes Thema. Ich danke euch dafür. Ich werde es mir noch ein paar mal anhören. Die Leute haben mich sehr interessiert und ich glaube, sie haben das Thema auch sehr gern diskutiert. Ich bin sicher, dass sie schon oft darüber nachgedacht haben.

We definitely have differences. I was growing up right next to the old border in a relatively rural area, the living standards behind the old border were still not up to par. People looked poorer but we're usually more open. But yeah there was and is a difference

I’m American, born in the late 1960s, grew up deep in the Cold War, visited West and East Germany (including West and East Berlin), and so am fascinated by and appreciative of this video. Wonderful interviews and perspectives! It would be interesting to hear how someone who is old enough to recall the united Germany of late-/post-WWII, as well as the divided then re-“connected” (as stated in one of the interviews) Germany. Perhaps there were always west-vs.-east regional differences that deepened while the country was divided? Hope someone will come across this comment who has a first-hand perspective. Again, nice work!

Ich komme aus Südkorea. Ich habe in Baden-Württemberg und Sachsen-Anhalt gewohnt. Es gibt deutlich viele Unterschiede zwischen Westdeutschland und Ostdeutschland. Besonders ist die Mentalität der Menschen sehr anders.
Danke für das interessante Video! Bis vor kurzem war mir gar nicht so richtig bewusst, dass Deutschland ja mal getrennt war. Vom Geschichtsunterricht her war es bei mir bloß als irgendein historisches Fakt abgespeichert. Es hat eine ganz andere Qualität und schafft ein ganz anderes Bewusstsein, die Auswirkungen direkt von den Menschen im heutigen Deutschland zu erfahren!

Ein sehr sehr interestantes Thema! Vielen Dank für die Mühe. Ich finde es einfach unfassbar dass es diese psychologische Trennung noch gibt! Ich hätte damals als Austauschschüler in Deutschland gedacht vielleicht 5 bs höchstens 10 Jahre Anpassungszeit. Es gibt keinen Grund, weshalb die Worte und das Konzept überhaupt von "Wessis und Ossis" noch unter den Deutschen ausgesprochen werden sollte.
Naja, die Sache ist halt, die meisten denken ähnlich, es sollte keinen Unterschied machen, es darf keinen Unterschied machen. Dass es noch faktische Unterschiede bei Renten, Gehältern etc gibt, ist halt so und wird sich auch nur langsam angleichen, aber auch irgendwo nachvollziehbar.
Das Problem, was viele Ostdeutsche mit der Wiedervereinigung erfahren mussten, ist gar nicht so sehr die traumatischen Brüche in den Lebensläufen, Arbeitslosigkeit etc, sondern dass in Westdeutschland über etliche Jahre fast eine gewisse Siegermentalität in Richtung Ostdeutschland signalisiert wurde nach dem Motto: "Die DDR hat nur Schlechtes herausgebracht, hier ist unser Aufbaugeld und jetzt passt euch an und gliedert euch gefälligst in die westdeutsche Gesellschaft ein". Verständnis und Aufmerksamkeit für Errungenschaften der DDR-Jahre und der ostdeutschen Gesellschaft gab es lange Zeit überhaupt nicht, nicht mal ein paar lauwarme Worte von Politikern waren drin. Den Ostdeutschen wurde 20 Jahre lang eindrucksvoll vermittelt, dass sie in einem Failed State gelebt und angeblich gar nichts auf die Kette bekommen haben.
Durch die Teilung hat sich faktisch nun mal eine eigene ostdeutsche Kultur mit eigenen Werten herausgebildet und nach der Wiedervereinigung hat man jahrelang versucht, dieses Kulturgut zu bekämpfen und aus dem Gedächtnis zu löschen, teilweise ziemlich erfolgreich. Und so hat man vielen Ostdeutschen ein Gefühl der Zweitklassigkeit und Minderwertigkeit vermittelt.
Es gibt durchaus Gründe, an diesem Konzept festzuhalten. Es gibt einfach gewisse Unterschiede, finanzielle wie kulturelle. Die werden sich automatisch wieder mit der Zeit abbauen, aber man kann das nicht erzwingen wie man es lange tun wollte.

Mangel an Mitgefühl und Hilfsbereitschaft der westlichen Deutschen für die eigene Landesleute finde ich sehr bedauernswert.
Es hört sich so an, als hätten sie Ihre eigene Landesleute nicht viel anders als Flüchtlige aus dem Ausland behandelt.
Jeder weiss, dass es wahloser Zufall war, wer auf welcher Seite der Grenze zwischen1945-1989 aufwuchs.
Dann sind es also die westlichen Deutschen und die Bonner Politiker, denen die Vorwürfe zu machen sind.
Wäre ich in dieser Zeitspanne in der DDR aufgewachsen dann würde ich auch recht sauer und beleidigt sein und mich würde es wohl dazu anregen, irgendwie politisch engagiert zu werden.
Ich würde gerne mal ein Video mit dem Thema 'Do you have any regrets?' sehen. Das wäre ein sehr interessante und philisopishe 'Janusz' Frage. 😉

The first thing to note is that it was not the USSR but the USA that prevented an earlier German reunification. Austria was reunified in 1955 through negotiations between the Cold War enemies that ensured it would be neutral. The result was a free and prosperous Austria that played a progressive role in the world. Under the Jewish-Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky, Austria spoke up for the rights of people of the Global South, including the Palestinians.
It was not to be the same for Germany. The USSR proposed the same neutral unification for Germany, but the USA refused because it wanted Germany in its NATO alliance. West Germany became part of NATO with former Nazis serving in the CIA to repress people in the "Third World" that sought to throw off US exploitation and control.
West Germany itself played an important part in US military dominance over people in the Global South. The US bases there helped to project US military might around the world, thereby enabling US wars and interventions such as the Vietnam War. Defying sanctions against Apartheid, West Germany even aided South Africa with arms and nuclear technology. Yes, West Germans had freedom but their government was creating misery for people with darker skin. It was creating misery for us in order to keep its people happy with the fruits of imperialism so that they wouldn't revolt against capitalism like they had from 1848 to 1933.
East Germany, on the other hand, aided the people of the "Third World" in their struggles against Western imperialism. Angola, Mozambique, and South Africa (among many others) became free because of East Germany's help. East Germany also helped the Palestinians, who had lost their homeland after being forced to pay the price for Europe's sins. So, internationaly, East Germans have a lot to be proud of. Many of us from the Global South still remember East Germany fondly.
As people in the video point out, 1989 was not a reunification but a forcible Anschluss. The interviewees correctly point out what capitalism did to East Germany, not only economically but also culturally and psychologically. Internationally, the problem is that, unlike Austria, a united Germany in NATO serves to project Western imperialism. Germany aquiesced when the US aided jihadists to destroy a socialist government in Afghanistan. Then Germany sent troops to Afghanistan when another branch of jihadists attacked the West. First you create a problem; then your arms industry benefits by supposedly "solving" the problem you created in the first place!
However, Germans have a proud revolutionary history of fighting for justice, both with ideas and in the street - and for themsleves as well as others. (Rosa Luxemburg and the German socialists who went to fight Franco in Spain come to mind.) On the anniversary of reunification, the question for Germans is this: How can the German state improve its moral standing, currently debased by capitalism and imperialism, by adopting some of what East Germany practiced domestically and internationally?

That is such a loaded comment. You seem quite happy to ignore the fact that East Germany was a puppet state under soviet control. In fact, as soon as Gorbachev made clear that he would no longer intervene militarily in the GDR’s affairs the whole system immediately collapsed. A socialist system can only exist with the implicit threat of Soviet tanks it seems. A government shouldn’t have to occupy its own country with a secret police as repressive as the Stasi, nor should it feel the need to build a wall to keep it’s own citizens from escaping it. Do you even realise how many died trying to flee that socialist paradise? Shot by their own countrymen for no greater crime than wanting to leave their home.
But I suppose it’s easier to be blinded by ideology than see the facts as they really are.

Why did the federal government do anything to increase and equalize the pensions of former East German people? They are all federally Germans now, so they should get the equivalent pension instead of being stuck in poverty because they grew up in a different economy.

Really a great topic. People seemed to really be passionate about the subject - though perhaps outside of Berlin, they may not be quite so passionate about it? It sounds like no one is talking about building the wall up again, only higher as I heard had been said in the past (or maybe they just aren't admitting to thinking it. Das was der Berliner über die "Umvolkung" in Prenzlauer Berg sagt fand ich schockierend/beeindruckend. Ich war 1989 das erste Mal in Berlin und dann immer mal wieder zu Besuch. Ich habe 2003 - 2008 dort gewohnt. Bin ab und an dort. Berlin, d.h. Ostberlin, kommt mir heute manchmal vor wie eine Kulisse der Vergangenheit (nach dem Motto: "Szene-Schnösel auf verzweifelter Suche nach der Szene", Peter Fox). Und verdammt teuer ist es geworden seut 2008...

Das ist aber ein wirklich interessantes Thema. Überhaupt für diejeniegen, die nicht aus Deutschland kommen, aber die schon für eine lange Zeit in dem Land wohnen. Vielen Dank für das Teilen sehr bunter Meinungen. Mir würden auch andere Themen interessieren, die mit der Mentalität verbunden sind wie z. @@E.L.Bernays Geht es wirklich im matrielle Knappheit? Um 8:12 spricht sie über Klassen, was bei die DDR ein sehr großes Thema war. Eben das wort "Kommunismus" "community" enthält, aber ob das nur politische Gerede ist, ist eine andere Sache.
In der DDR hat jeder dasselbe verdient egal ob Mann oder Frau da es da Lohnklassen gab. ( z.b. lohnklasse 1 ist immer 800€). Und dort musste man auch nicht über Frauenquoten reden denn das Frauen dort arbeiten war normal. ( auch in höheren Etagen) und Kindergatenplätze waren sicher.

Leider ist 'der andere' für uns Menschen immer ein Problem, egal wer 'der andere' ist! Das ist sehr schade!
Ich denke, es wäre interessant, wenn ihr die Menschen fragen würdet, was sie über Accessibility in Deutschland denken. Zum Beispiel den Zugang für Rollstuhlfahrer oder Untertitel. Mir ist aufgefallen, dass es z.B. bei einigen deutschen Sendungen auf Joyn und Amazon keine Untertitel gibt, und die meisten deutschen UA-camr machen sich nicht die Mühe, ihre Videos zu untertiteln.
Ich denke auch, dass es interessant wäre, über den Denkmalschutz zu sprechen. Wo ich wohne, gibt es viele hässliche Gebäude, die unter Denkmalschutz stehen, weil die Fenster angeblich besonders sind. Ich verstehe nicht, warum man nicht ein Gebäude stehen lassen kann, wenn es wirklich erhaltenswert ist, und dann den Rest abreißen und etwas Schönes bauen kann.

Gebäude werden nicht in erster Linie unter Denkmalschutz gestellt, weil sie schön sind (obwohl das natürlich auch eine große Rolle spielt), sondern weil man sie für historisch bedeutsam hält, wenn sie zum Beispiel repräsentativ für einen Baustil/eine Epoche sind u.ä. Was als schön gilt, verändert sich ja auch mit der Zeit.
Ich schätze so den Unterschied zwischen Osten und Westen mit der Herkunft und Erfahrungen als jemand, der gebürtiger Bayer, dessen Familie aus Österreich stammt (wo ich derzeit lebe), aber der auch Austauschjahr in Leipzig gemacht hatte und 2,5 Jahre in Berlin gelebt hat (und ich mache vielleicht 4-5 mal im Jahr Geschäftsreise nach Frankfurt am Main und Köln/Bonn).
Ich empfinde den Unterschied zwischen Osten und Westen wie ich den Unterschied zwischen Deutschen (zumindest Bayern) und Österreichern wahrnehme -- Es gibt die auf jeden Fall noch, aber Berliner und Leipziger leben in einem völlig anderen Land als die Bayer, und Leipzig ist deutlich moderner und integrierter in das neue Deutschland als Dresden, Chemnitz und die Kleinstädte in der Nähe von Berlin. Berlin ist so anders, dass es beinah nicht zu Deutschland gehört, es ist einzigartig unter allen Städten in Deutschland.
Meiner Meinung nach sind die Ossis wirklich gut drauf und extrem menschenfreundlich aber, wie fast alle Völker, die früher hinter dem Eisernen Vorhang aufwuchsen, sie sind deutlich verschlossener als die Köller oder Wessis im Allgemeinen und man muss die menschliche Wärme irgendwie verdienen, aber wenn man das verdient, dann wird da eine Ewigkeit dauern (genau wie unter Russen, die auch einen schlechten Ruf für ihre kühle Verschlossenheit hatten/haben).

Loved the Deutschland 83 series! Liked the first one, but the next two followed more of a Bourne movie plot.
In the UK it was the most successful foreign language series ever. It really is fantastic. Very slick, cool production (worth noting it was actually written by an American).

Vielleicht eine oder mehre Besuchungs bei anderen Städte im Osten Teil des Landes und die selbere Fragen forstellen. Beispielweise: Frankfurt am Oder, Dresden, und kleine Hoffen aufs Bauerland oder wo die Elbe fliesst. Während des letzten Wahl war da auch Bestimmung von den Leuten im Osten Teil de Landes, die Ihre Meinungen hergestellt haben. Was mit der neuen Regierung vorschlägt für weidere Hilfe und neue Leistungen herstellen werden im Osten Teil des Landes bin ich auch gespannt. Ich bin niemals da gewesen oder besucht diese Teil des Landes und möchte mehr davon lernen.

If you want to be polite you can ask if you should take off your shoes after entering the house or flat. Here it's normal to walk indoor with socks, but in other parts of Germany people walk with shoes inside the house. It's kind of a regional thing.

Because it is barely unification, in corporate words it is hostile acquisition, not a merger with much less bargaining power for East Germans. This is why you see so much disparity in financial well-being. West Germany as any capitalist country needed to extend its markets and it has done so at the expense of East Germany and Eastern and Southern Europe because it was technologically more advanced.
