This is an interview for BBC’s Newsnight between Victoria Derbyshire and Jeremy Vine discussing ex BBC presenter Alex Belfield. He was found guilty of stalking four people including Jeremy Vine and myself.
I am finally able to speak out about ex BBC Presenter and UA-camr Alex Belfield as we prepare to go to court to settle my civil case against him.
I am Philip Dehany I was a theatre blogger and am now a volunteer for the Terrence Higgins Trust.
I am one of the several victims who were harassed by former BBC presenter Alex Belfield, which led to him being jailed for five and a half years. After his trial concluded, but before he was sentenced, Belfield publicly revealed information about my HIV status. I am now claiming compensation from him in the civil courts, under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.
Belfield’s awful campaign of harassment against me, (much of which was directed at my sexuality) continued even during and after his trial. He constantly published harassing videos about me and others, and made a lot of money from UA-cam advertising revenue and by asking for donations from his followers.
The impact upon me has been huge - my reputation has been seriously damaged and I lost my passion, confidence and ultimately my income as a theatre blogger. I am now seeking therapy.
I have already spent over £4,000 in legal fees and have to pay £1,500 more for the work which has been done to get me to this stage.
Unless Belfield agrees to settle with me, which seems very unlikely, I will have no choice but to issue court proceedings against him and my costs to take the matter all the way to trial could reach £100,000.
I have begun to update this article with my full account of what happened. The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I will be uploading all of my evidence that was submitted during the five week trial, and detailing every step of this horrendous ordeal and how it affected me.

The trouble is, Alex Belfield never uttered a word of a lie did he? Whereas all he wanted Jeremy Vine to do was to admit his wrongdoing over the £1000 that was illegally given to charity (as it was later found out - but could have gone anywhere including the local offie to buy booze). No man should be put in jail for telling the truth - full stop.
OK I know little of this case but if he has knowledge and believe tbis is true I would think appropriate action is to make a report to police ..to the charity...or proper authority that deals in such matters...a tweet or two to the public stating what actions he took would be appropriate. If you are giving out addresses ..a continued bombardment, then perhaps alex crossed the line?
Blimey, sounds like you have been hooked in by Belfield as well. This is what the judge found with regard the £1000.
"The allegations you made against Mr Vine were wholly false. You boasted online about
the fact that in excess of 400,000 people had viewed your video about Mr Vine
containing these false allegations. Your assertions in your videos and tweets that your
allegation was supported by BBC answers to Freedom of Information Requests was
also wholly false. They provided no support, as was revealed at trial. You were not a
whistle-blower in any sense but developed a fixation with pursuing Mr Vine with a
campaign of abuse."
Further to this, Mr Vine took out a civil action, Belfield apologised and paid substantial damages.
@@gmo4250 From the evidence I heard, this was a total stitch-up. Apologising, paying damages, and going to jail for 5 years.... Sounds like the verdict was rigged and had a dodgy judge...

What evidence did you hear and where did you hear it and who from? Why did you come to the conclusion it was a stitch up from a dodgy judge? It was a jury decision that dismissed 4 charges, but he was found guilty on the other 4 charges and of those 4 charges, 2 were partial sentences.
With regard the £1000, it never went anywhere near Jeremy Vine and the FOI from the BBC proved that, Alex lied. The £1000 from the BBC went towards a memorial service for John Myers and was paid directly to the memorial service.
Exactly. Vine and the BBC have done more damage to many more people over the years for their LIES. Just look at the COVID EXCESS DEATHS THEY WON'T REPORT.
Amazing. Obviously Vine doesn't have a finger to press DELETE, nor does he have a BLOCK within his email account, clearly the only person in the World without one. Vine, like the others, just LOVE reading about themselves irrespective of the content.

You do realise that you can’t block a stalker. Belfield set up other accounts and carried on stalking and harassing his victims even though they blocked him. When he couldn’t get to them, he contacted their families instead or got his moronic followers to harass his victims by proxy. Suggest you research before commenting as you clearly know nothing about this case.

@@Tad1945 Yes, it’s true that many of Belfield’s videos are still out there as he often told his followers to copy and share his videos. He may have taken them down from his own UA-cam channel, but many can still be viewed outside the UK or via a VPN connection. Truth Checkers has been exposing Belfield for around 3 years along with many others on Twitter and UA-cam. The problem with obsessed stalkers is that they themselves cannot switch off or be avoided. Belfield also lied to his followers and conned them out of money. Many of these people were poor, vulnerable and pensioners. He was a vile despicable conman. People are only doing what Belfield did to many others and are making money out of him. Good for them! 👏
Belfield kept creating new accounts, he was impossible to block, but that's not the point. He was asked to stop on numerous occasions, he chose not to. There's only one person to blame for his prison sentence and that is Belfield.

If you’re talking about Vine taking money meant for a charity, Bellend has admitted he was lying and paid Vine damages.
Vine had to admit at the trial what he did with the £1,000 it WAS against BBC rules!! This is what Bellfield said all along!
I think Vine should be held to account for his deliberate antagonistic actions against motorists just to get TV footage. I don't ever hear a good word said about Vine!!

I imagine Vine is suffering from some kind of childhood trauma. He must have been bullied terribly, and this has turned him into a complete prick who gets a sense of righteousness and victory from getting people into trouble. Belfield will be back out of prison one day, but Vine will always be a prick.
And what about me? And the other seven defendants that gave evidence against Belfield? Are we all pricks? Do you think we all suffered from childhood traumas that somehow caused Belfield to want to stalk us?

Too many British people get flattered at the amount of views if they appear on USA religious extremist UA-cam channels, but all they're doing is bringing sick USA society where men and women dislike each other into Europe. Such as many USA women tell men they're disgusting if they haven't been cir'cised as a baby for non medical reasons, and some men grow up with issues for having that done, which they then spend a lot of time online trying to take out on women. Such as the USA man banned from entering some European countries for making websites encouraging men abuse women while travelling, or Andrew Tate. Or they go around chanting the word lefty as an insult for what actually USA capitalism causes. Such as how only the USA has a TV series for the child trans Jazz Jennings or only a USA magazine made Bruce Jenner woman of the year, and only the USA promotes melting pot societies to the rest of the world. While all actual left wing societies promote such as most countries in north Europe (except England) and Scandinavia, are socialised health care, not being greedy and getting into debt with credit cards and free or affordable university and not being obsessed with trashy, tacky talentless celebs, who are rich on society being dumbed down from admiring useless idiots, selling their children into the talentless celeb industry to use for their own attention.

@@iamthat vine said making numerous videos of someone is stalking. BBC spent months making videos on the likes of Tommy Robinson, Andrew tate and many others. They went as far to look for people in their past to question them. Sent people to their doors.
@@mumsspaghetti6649 that wasn’t all Belfield did. Making videos was only a small part of his crimes. They included harassment, blackmail and defamation. In my case as well as making videos about me. Belfield sent me several threatening emails, as well as messaging me across all my social media platforms. When I blocked and ignored him. Belfield then began harassing my parents. Sending them emails, as well as finding out where they lived and phoning my mother before recording the conversation and threatening to play it on his UA-cam channel. He was found guilty of stalking by a jury, and lost his appeal when he tried to challenge it. He has now settled two civil cases admitting that he lied about Jeremy Vine and DC Percival. And has issued apologies to both

Debbie babe. Get your facts right, it wasn’t just online stalking, he found out personal information about me. Black mailed me, harassed me, found out where my parents lived. Phoned my mum, recorded the conversation, then threatened to play it on his UA-cam channel, blocking or ignoring him on Twitter wasn’t enough.

Blocking any unwanted contact is easy..Why not do that?
I did block Belfield when he initially targeted me on Twitter. He then began to send me messages on Facebook, which I blocked. He then began emailing me. I did not respond. Then because I ignored his emails, Belfield began emailing my parents. He then found out my parent’s address and my mother’s phone number and called her.
Stopping a serial stalker is far from easy, especially when the police and social media companies did nothing to stop him.
Even now in prison Belfield is currently under investigation from the crown prosecution service for violating his restraining order, which is designed to protect me but hasn’t.

In this case, which Belfield was found guilty of stalking four people, The judge clarified “I am not imposing sentences on you because you made comments about the BBC or about matters of public interest. Your sentences reflect your repeated and personal harassment of the victims and not your views on any issue of public interest. You are entitled to hold and express views but you are not entitled to destroy the personal lives of your victims through online harassment.”

So, it turns out Vine is suing.
Having looked it up, the civil action started well before the criminal case made it to court. The criminal case took precedence, so there was a delay. That is normally how these things are done.
Do you approve of Vine's actions, now that you know there is a civil case ?
Or are you going to jump backwards through logical hoops ?

The frightening thing is how easy it was for a disturbed individual to persuade hundreds of people to harass total strangers.
Of course Belfield is the one most to blame but I can't believe people are so easily manipulated.
I was incline to agree. But then you only have to look at Trump and how he got half a country to vote for him! It’s worrying how far people are influenced by “free speech”. It’s exactly why I stood up to Belfield. I can’t change the world, but I hope that I can make a difference in some way.
Whenever I engaged with Belfield’s supporters I asked them to not consider what he said as being gospel but to take his comments with an open mind, do their own research and come to their own conclusion. UA-cam and now Twitter have made it profitable for people to get rage clicks and so a lot of people just post whatever they think will get people angry, whether they agree with it or not. Belfield was good at manipulating stories and creating 2-3 minute videos which got a lot of clicks and made him a lot of money. There was a huge incentive for him to keep posting what he did unfortunately.

But as far as his fans go, I guess it's easy to believe you really know someone when you watch their videos every day and think they must be telling you the truth about everything.
It was interesting that Vine didn’t talk about specific allegations that AB made.
@@martinprice8935 because at the time of this interview Vine had already engaged a solicitor and began his civil case for defamation, which he would later win, with Belfield acknowledging that he lied about vindictive and the allegations were false. Belfield would then pay Vine damages and issued an apology.

It's his followers responsibility to adhere to the law.
I'm not a Bellfield fan, I just feel we are going down a dangerous path that would mean we could no longer complain about anyone just incase someone listens and attacks the person we complain about.
@@craigshannon6011 but we’re talking about committing crimes. If Belfield incites his followers to break the law and commit offences they are responsible for their actions. But Belfield should be accountable for his, if his intentions were to incite. Which I believe they were.

Most people regularly complain about Politicians for example, If something bad were to happen to one of these unpopular politicians would all those people complaining be held liable for that? I very much doubt it as half of the country could be in trouble.
I actually prefer Jeremy Vine over Alex Belfield but I disagree with him over this, unless there was clear incitement of violence against anyone which I don't believe there was. It just comes down to voicing a dislike of someone.
@@craigshannon6011 I don’t think there’s a fine line, I think there’s a very clear line, which Belfield crossed which is why he was found guilty of stalking and is now in prison.
In my case. Belfield was quoting as saying I “deserved a kicking” as well as many homophobic and derogatory remarks.
And in both our cases Belfield revealed identifying information about our families, and where they lived and could be found.
This crosses the territory of acceptable conduct.
Plus, I am not a politician, and not a public figure. So I wouldn’t say I deserved to be talked about to the extent that Belfield exercised.
@iamthat I wasn't aware you were personally involved, I will agree with you that I don't think Belfield is a very nice person, I remember watching a couple of his youtube videos and found him quite arrogant I was instantly put off.
But again, this is how it's a dangerous path as we could all be guilty of saying some negative opinions of Belfield now.
That's why I feel freedom of speech is so important. The downside to this is having to listen to a few bad opinions.

I guess at the end of the day, the judge agreed with you. I'll just always be on the side of free speech even if I don't like what's being said. Otherwise, it would be hypocritical.

It wasn’t just about Belfield making videos. He was found guilty of stalking me by harassing me, posting about me on Twitter, sending me direct messages on Facebook, finding out where I lived, finding my parents phone number, calling my mother at home and recording the conversation before threatening to broadcast it on his UA-cam channel. He also sent dozens of emails to myself, and then my parents after I had blocked him, attempting to black mail me. As well as digging up information about me from my past including my HIV status which he revealed publicly in one of his videos.
I am unfortunately still involved in a civil case against Belfield for harassment that he is unwilling to settle, and today I was interviewed again by the police and gave a statement in their on going investigation surrounding Belfield.
It’s not a case of just “saying negative things about someone”. Belfield’s behaviour was obsessive and relentless and ultimately criminal. Had he stuck to simply posting videos on UA-cam with his “potty mouth” there might not have been a case. He was found guilty because of his other behaviour.

Vine is a regular litigant. He sues at the drop of a hat.
I cannot understand why Belfield still has both a Twitter and a UA-cam channel active. He has been convicted of stalking and harassment and he used both his UA-cam channel and Twitter account to target his victims yet both of his accounts are still active. Why on earth haven’t his channels been removed?
Because of “free speech” he is technically within the law to say whatever he wants on those platforms, and UA-cam and Twitter won’t do anything because they make money from it. The law needs to change.
For a criminal, he should lose his channel

As for “hurty words”, Belfield was convicted of four counts of stalking, including harassment and blackmail. It was far more than just posted a few videos.

Blocking didnt stop Belfield, he was relentless.

It’s going to be interesting when he’s released from prison. When he gets home and finds his “career” is dead, his reputation is worthless, his grass is six foot high, he’s only got three subscribers (and they’ve all got caravans in Skegness and bald red heads) and Tarquin is sleeping with Carol Vorderman. Personally I can’t wait.
That’s if he has a house to come to, once he’s finished paying off all the legal cases
When is belfield due out? He should have got longer than 5 years. He’s an appalling human being.
I have to agree. In our case. Where there were eight complainants, Belfield was found not guilty of four, and then found guilty of two counts of aggravated stalking (with a penalty of 2 years 6 months imprisonment each) and two counts of simple stalking (with a penalty of 13 weeks imprisonment each).
Had Belfield been found guilty of all eight counts. His total sentence would have been 20 years.
@@iamthat If he got 5 and a half years sentence, does this mean he has to serve at least 2 years before any chance of release? That means he won't be released until around November 2025 right?
@johnking5174 I think normally, you get half off for good behaviour. Then you are on probation for the rest of the time.
@@timg1246 So that would mean a near October - November 2024 release, considering he was jailed in September 2022.
