Making Sheep Shear Knives: CHEAP & EASY!

- Today in the shop I am reclaiming an old pair of rusty and pitted sheep shears that I recently picked up for a few dollars at a flea market. I am saving them from a life of becoming a wall ornament in someone's bathroom, and turning them into a pair of Petty knives.
I cut the shears apart, cleaned and de-rusted them, ground in the asymmetrical bevels, and then shaped and fit the wooden handles. I glues the handles to the external tang, and pinned them together for some additional strength with 1/8" brass pins. The wooden handle design is one that drew and edited several times before finding one that I liked, while adding to the aesthetic of the knife, pairing sharp facets with a smooth curved back.
I love the way these knives feel in the hand, and how well they work in the kitchen. I like how watching this video he is still using harbor freight and second hand tools. So many other makers that start to get a decent following begin to start way upgrading there tools. Like going from second hand or harbor freight tools over to high end Bosch and Festool
I use the tools that I have. When I get new tools, I use those too. The tools work until they don’t. If they work, I use them 😁

I'm proud to say I own one of the Sheepshear Knives. I absolutely love it. I used it as my kitchen knife when I went camping recently. It's one of my all time favorite knives now

My grandfather left me an American ax blade (with logo number 9) I don't understand the meaning of the logo?. and I'm keeping it as a very valuable keepsake. I once heard him say that white ash is an optimal choice for the handle of an ax. my grandpa is gone...i always keep it and will restore it someday. thanks for your good video, tutorial. Wow, what a great project! With that asymmetrical bevel they're almost like a deba. I even have a set i inherited from my Grandfather. My grandson Ashton is going to be a chef so what a perfect thing to make for him. Thanks so much for the idea. Im sure mine will not turn out as good as your but mate im going to try lol.

Just watching and thought you may want to put some bright enamel paint on the knob you turned which caused the sanding belt to shoot off. That way you will visually see a difference on the knobs for what you want to do.

Nice looking repurpose. When the video came out, I went about finding some shears myself and have started the project. I noticed you grinding spine up for these. What’s the thinking there?

I grind edge up for material removal and spine up when sharpening.
Great job mate . I’ve made a few and using deer antler for the handles. They are a bit more rustic looking than yours ( means rougher) but they look the part and are quite popular. Love your show keep up the good work.

Great idea, but I would have flushed the wood to the height of the metal at the back of the knife. Great video. Who plays the music. Whoever it is does some great stuff with alternate tunings. I play myself. Thanks

Hey mate any idea what to make with the part of the handle you cut away?
Apologies if you've already answered this, but what is this rust remover liquid? Looks like your own personal formulation, and I'd love to know what it is - if you don't mind.
You could make bracelet's out of those ends you cut off and throwed in the trashcan.

You ever sell your hatchets ?
It’s a great build and I’ve done more than a few of them myself… my only ongoing concern is the bevel is in the wrong side. These knives are great for left the handed… not so good in the right hand.
Thanks Espo. I actually think they are more geared for right handed use, since the taller bevel is on the left, but all in all, I don’t think it makes all the much of a difference. Thanks again.
You don't have to redo the bevels. Just sharpen and use.
They’re a bit too thick on the edge for my liking for a culinary knife, so I like to grind them back a bit to get a thinner edge geometry.
nonsense
