i'm a pgy-1, i agree going to class is a colossal waste of time, especially when you hit 2nd year and can really consume information a lot faster than lectures are throwing it at you. The 8-5 lecture schedule is arcane and obsolete, only go to mandatory stuff, quizzes etc. Take control of your schedule guys and gals

  • @sunp94

I'm 41 and just finished my 1st year of med school...it's been an amazing journey. I was a med tech for 16 yrs before deciding to become a doc. It's been a challenging road! 1st challenge was the MCAT and the whole 1st yr still trying to figure out what studying works best for me. Im hanging in there tho! Sometimes I take it a day at a time but wouldn't change it for the world. It's TRUE that theres not one particular way of studying and you have to be willing to adapt to whatever the curriculum entails....from Biosciences, ethics, psychological, to clinical exams.

That's basically how I handled classes in graduate school. I got an MS in Physics and rarely went to classes, in large part because most of the physics profs were very poor lecturers. The texts we used were pretty clear and so I just studied the material in the texts and made sure that I could do the problems at the ends of the chapters. Luckily, most of the exam questions were based on the end of chapter problems in the books and so I fared pretty well on the tests. I did keep in touch with students who did attend lectures to find out about special assignments and other stuff. I did have a Quantum Mechanics prof who was annoyed by my behavior and who tried to grade my exams and homework assignments very harshly to punish me. I was successful in challenging his judgements, which were arbitrary and capricious, by presenting solution methods and techniques in books that were similar to my own to the chairman of the department. My experience in getting my Masters was a big part of the reason why I decided not to pursue a Ph.D., 4 or 5 more years of having to deal with conceited and obnoxious people.

I'm proud of what this man accomplished but if I remember correctly, this man works 3 days STRAIGHT without going home, has 1 day off, then comes back for another 3 days STRAIGHT. That's 6 entire days at work, ALL DAY. I don't think being a doctor is worth it. If you climb up the ladder in finance, you'll be looked at as successful, live a great life, and have the option to retire by 35 because by then you'll more than likely be well into $2-$5 million in bonuses over the years.

Temple Dental school requires students to go to every class! that is a huge waste of time because many people can not learn this way and at this point in your educational career, you should have developed the academic discipline to learn the information on your own. I've done both in person and online, I get distracted easily, but also love to learn, and for me I think it depends on which class and who is teaching it as well. I found my psychology classes boring as they basically repeated what was in the book usually, but I've been interested and reading some psych since I was in middle school. College history class was totally different, very fun and exciting, and my sociology class was online and and the pages were not 50 different colors but I had more noise but also was more straightforward so it was easier to do online than in person.

Same for me it was also about eliminating all possibility of experiencing racism/classism. Racist teachers, controversial topics, racists fake friends. Also I felt so bad when other students talked down because they have better clothes, car, laptop and PDAs, new books and all of the optional study materials not to mention extracurricular activites which even costs even more money.
Plus when are educational scientists going to learn that trying learn with a bunch of strangers is worse than studying alone or on a research acedemic library with some people. Personally the library is so much safer than the classroom almost all time.
So many times I felt stupid for asking questions however I cannot rewind or reread a section with live teachers. Pause or click on hyperlink for new terminology or slightly deviate for research then come back to. Plus many of this upper class students didn't need to sell their old book to get cash for current courses' textbook. Is usually the lower class you see them at used book store.
Personally they should just let us read and take notes from the teacher's edition textbook then take a proctor exam. The whole point is efficiency studying from the best source instead of depending or ruining from perhaps unnecessary human interactions or inferior sources.

Without mentioning neurodivergence, learning theories, socio-economics, family dynamics, dropout rates, etc., this man just gave us a whole 6 minute TED talk on why higher education institutions (and workplaces for that matter) must stop treating "accommodations" as an exception rather than the given. If a person is capable of learning or doing the work when it needs to be done, why is it the norm for students to still be graded on class attendance and discussion participation, or forced to take some written tests, regardless of how the individual best demonstrates their knowledge and competency? Meanwhile, the American talent pool is withering on the vine at a time when there are critical shortages in so many specialized fields from medicine to teaching to truck driving.

It is. The vast majority of University lectures and Medical School lectures could be placed online. This would of course render professors jobless for the most part(why it probably won't happen). There really isn't much of a difference hearing the professor speak in a lecture hall or on a youtube video. I didn't even have that luxury. I only had, if lucky, the professor's powerpoint, and that was enough. When needing to digest large quantities of information, it is not the amount of time you spend on something, but how often you review it that leads to success.

for medical school it's different than undergrad. for example, in undergrad anatomy you needed to know literally every artery, every nerve, function, insertion, origin, etc. in medical school they only ask CLINICALLY relevant things pertaining to that nerve/artery/whatever. Undergrad question: Looking at a femur picture/model, what is this random line running down the middle? Linea aspera. Medical school question: a 3 year old boy, comes to ED, with fever/malaise for 3 days. he's been limping on his leg, temp 103, ROM shows no pain and no joint effusino, he can't bear weight on his leg. radiotracer uptake in his leg is most likely to be increased where? metaphysis part of long bone. with this in mind you'll know what they ask, but also the downside is that you'll realize they ask everything, cause almost everything they say in med school is important lol

@CrAzYCaM 8 the money is not a strong argument for PA or NP. say youre in ortho, just as Dr. Webb. an ortho residency is 4 years, during which you get paid around 50k. PAs make about 100k. so during the entire course of residency, a PA will make 400k while the ortho resident makes 200k. then the next year, the ortho is now a fully licensed surgeon, making around 500k. so in 5 years time, the ortho has made 600k and the PA has made 500K, and those number only get much much farther apart from there on.

How did you communicate with your teachers so that they didn’t take offense to you not showing up to school? I used this strategy in my last few years of college, but I felt like I was upsetting professors who would possibly need to become references

    • @0doublezero0

Why would you need to communicate with them? This isn't undergrad so your letters or recommendations don't come from your basic science professors, they come from physicians in clinical years. So let them get angry as long as the policy is non-mandatory attendance and lectures are recorded, you haven't done anything wrong skipping.

Hey, Antonio :)! I love how you made this video, because i’m absolutely in this same dilemma as you described. I felt like there was something innately wrong with me.
I made a post on Reddit today about how I can’t concentrate in class, and me being there is a waste of time.
For some reason I cannot concentrate in class / i’m distracted. I have 0 clue if it is ADD or just me shutting off my brain from paying attention, but when i’m at home watching lecture videos from that class... i’m able to better focus / pay attention... it is like my comfort zone...
Why do you think that is? Is it because we’re tired in class or something? Distracted? Also, this whole absent minded thing happens to me for classes that are technical... Math / any technical course that requires a good heavy mental usage.

there are doctors with IQ's sub-100. It's rare, but possible. This means if your heart is set on it, you can out-work smart lazy people. you might see all your friends partying and getting in relationships. It's hard if you can't maintain those types of relationships with the rigor of being pre-med, but if your heart is set on medicine, well, if there's a will there's a way. I had to make a lot of sacrifices because while smart, I have never been the best in school. I'm applying right now to med school btw.
