  • Watch to see how Neil LeFaive and I modify a Shure SM57! According to Steve Cutler at @uniofhull doing this modification can boost the low mids (300-600Hz). Having used one when I was at the university, I had to try it out myself! The results are shown at the end of the video.
Have you ever modded a mic yourself? What do you think of the results from this experiment? Are there further mods I can try with this mic?
A huge thank you to Steve Culter from The University of Hull for the idea, and a big thank you to Neil LeFaive for his help with this project. Please check out his fantastic band, 93 North.

Have you ever modded a mic before? How did it go? Any recommendations?

Do you know how long you kept the mic in the boiling water? Did you do anything to dry it out afterward?

I kept it in until the glue was gone, with hindsight I’d have kept it in even longer, and hotter. Was about 30 minutes in the pot. I used paper towel to dry and I let it rest, the water evaporated quickly. Works perfectly!
