There is no need for a self priming hang on back filter, because no hang on back filter on the market, including the aquaclear, tidal, topfin, etc, none of them should lose prime because the power is turned off. You are correct. Yeah the only reason your filter would ever lose prime is if your water level was way too low. If you unplug your filter or lose power for any reason, and it loses prime, it’s you not the filter. Restarting after power outage is different than “repriming” after power outage. If the water level is correct you never lose prime. Like a car uses more battery to start because it has to run the starter and the engine over, the impeller and motor have to initially restore flow. The impeller has a metal shaft and the motor spins the impeller via a magnet. What happens typically is the impeller needs to be removed and wiped down of gunk and biofilm as well as the hole it sits in needs to be cleaned out w a q tip. The gunk keeps the impeller from having full power because it degrades the magnetic connection between the impeller and the motor. This happens on all filter motors over time. The filter still runs but it doesn’t have the extra oomph required to initially restart itself after power is removed. I’m probably going to make a video specifically about this. I wouldn't say that these are self priming as they are not. More like they don't loose prime when power is interrupted. Huge difference.

I been using aquaclear for close to 20 years with many power outages, never had one not self prime. Aquaclear not self priming is a myth.
