  • This video provides an answer to a question I am often asked "Is swimming good for getting rid of back pain?"
    In this video I explain why many people feel a great relief from completing swimming but I also explain why this is merely a band-aid approach to a much bigger problem and why people who rely on this as their only source of treatment are neglecting the real reasons behind their pain.
    To see more about the Back Pain program I refer to in the video go to our website in the link below

    The true cause of back pain injuries is not from a lack of swimming. It is from moving poorly repetitively. Common daily activities we think nothing of, are where the injury is formed. Many of us may be able to go through life getting away with some bad movement if it is countered enough with good movement. However the person who does not build reserves and just keeps stealing from their body, will pay the price. The very first thing you should do with your treatment for a bulging disc is to identify your poor movement and eliminate it or change it. If you ignore this, you are likely to suffer repeated episodes that get worse each time.
    Swimming provides some great relief for people as it places them into extension in a weightless environment. In daily life people are more prone to sitting and moving in too much flexion which leads to compression of joints and in the case of back pain the disc compression. Swimming provides relief from this repetitive position of pain, but while it provides relief it DOES NOT CHANGE how you continue to move outside the pool.
    It also does not improve stability or strength of muscles that are known for weakness and inhibition. So while swimming can provide relief, on it's own it is not an effective remedy.
    Make sure you read our detailed articles on back pain, bulging discs and movement strategies to correct this pain in the links below

    I'm glad you addressed the SIJ. My left side hurts worse after swimming which is a shame as I enjoy the exercise, but don't do it cause it hurts knees and back.

    I had really bad back pain for months after I had my son (also have pelvic floor dysfunction which doesn’t help lol) so decided to go swimming and after swimming for a week everyday I noticed the pain eased, it wasn’t gone but it was a noticeable difference so I knelt it up and I lost weight, felt happier and managed my back pain until lockdown hit lol starting again tomorrow ;) can’t wait!

    Swimming is a great exercise that many back pain sufferers do because they can't run, walk or bike due to pain. If it helps you lose weight and gives you great cardio, then it's a win for many. It's just a tool along with a good diet and stretches.

    Makes sense. Seems like NO exercise will help with pain if you have poor posture!!!

    It’s not just swimming, it’s also water resistance exercises, endurance. Also the overall fitness and flexibility benefits of regular water training. Kicking can be a training focus and wading with feet. Hydrotherapy is quite a substantial spinal rehab approach.

    • @Noregretspt
      @Noregretspt  3 роки тому +4

      Hydrotherapy is great and can be useful in the early stages of rehab where land based exercise is too difficult. However, I was referring specifically to swimming in this video, in particular freestyle swimming and my point being that this by itself is not a long term solution to what is a movement problem. Until you resolve the faulty movement mechanics and strategy of moving that causes the pain you will never find an effective solution that treats the injury at the source.

    Chronic disc injury generally get aggravated when put on extension.. its only in the acute phase that extention exercises help.

    I've been in bed rest for a few weeks due to extreme weakness from pregnancy. Now when I stand up for a while or sit without reclining I have mid and lower spine pain. Is this due to my back muscles weakening? And will my pain resolve if I strengthen my back muscles?

    • @Noregretspt
      @Noregretspt  2 роки тому +2

      Without seeing you in person to do an assessment it is difficult for me to say exactly. In most cases this is due to weakness with the glutes forcing your hips to overly tighten and drive your spine into excessive extension. Finding a way to mobilize the hips and strengthen the glutes and core is often the solution. You will find a ton of ideas of how to do this and a detailed explanation of this in this article noregretspt.com.au/index.php/resources/blog/43-2014/402-exercise-strategies-to-correct-sacroiliac-joint-lower-back-pain

    I am having LBP for a year. Not to severe. The most frequent symptoms is I feel my low back muscle sore when stand up after sitting for longer time (I am an office worker for 20+ years). But it gone few minutes after.
    I have been to 3 doctors and did fisio therapy and not much improvement. All 3 of the doctors suggested me to try swimming. So I search on youtube for swimming pool exercise such as walking forward and backward and sideways, twisting etc.
    But after watching this video I feel that I don't need to do that.
    So what's the best exercise for my LBP problem I mentioned above?
    Thank you.

      It is impossible for me to say exactly what is right for you for I have not assessed you or know enough about your body to be sure what is best. Having said that most back pain sufferers do really well when they improve hip mobility, bending ability, and improving gluteal strength and function. Bending is often the trigger of pain so learning how to do it right and making it stronger usually makes a massive difference long term. I suggest to read this article to see more specific examples of what I mean www.noregretspt.com.au/index.php/resources/blog/43-2014/222-bulging-disc-exercises-effective-long-term-treatment-strategies

      I would not suggest to do swimming especially if it is giving you pain afterwards. I would spend some time learning to stabilize the neck and head before trying to get back to swimming. You will find some good ideas of how to do this here www.noregretspt.com.au/index.php/resources/blog/43-2014/461-13-exercises-to-strengthen-your-neck-to-eliminate-pain-tension

    • @Noregretspt
      @Noregretspt  3 роки тому +4

      You could swim if your problem is more flexion intolerant, however if you have an extension related problem or hip dysfunction, swimming can create problems. Even if swimming does help you, it still does not change the way you move when you are standing. Learning how to bend, squat, lunge, etc is where you need to put your focus if you want to get on top of this fully. Is swimming good for lumbar scoliosis?

    • @Noregretspt
      @Noregretspt  2 роки тому +1

      It can be a good addition and provide some relief for some people but on its own it will not correct the problem. Also if you swim with poor technique or you only breathe on one side if doing freestyle it can cause more problems.
