Autogefühl Thomas. Great work. No, not great. Brilliant work, as always. Keep it up bro! Just a simple question for you. Is it worth waiting for Lexus UX? My main problem is that I'm not sure my 4 years old TRIPLETS would fit inside the car with 3 child seats, what do you think? Vielen Dank!

One of the best reviews of the C-HR. Thanx! I bought a C-HR, coming from a Prius. So it’s way more exciting car, believe me 🤣. I love the hybrid system. It’s unbelievable reliable. Only costs of maintenance and of course less fuel consumption. Drove the 10 year old Prius to 220k with original brakes and 12v battery. Even after 10 years the car looked brand new on the inside. I expect the C-HR will have the same quality. It has a 10 year guarantee 😃✅

Two long test drives and my own C-HR will arrive in about amonth. I am nearly 80, a conservative driver with access to other cars in my household. A mix of city and highway driving.
Several main reasons or selecting the vehicle: safety (both electronic and physical ), hybrid engine, ability to get a 'luxury' finish, relatively small size and the exterior and interior design. I tested acceleration and the maximum is way beyond my driving habits. The back seat was fine for my wife. The 'darkness' in the back seat? Our windows are covered anyway to cut out the sun for our grandchild (daughter in law is an optometrist and urged us to do that). The size of the trunk is good enough for our needs, in fact, I probably will drive with the rear seat down. And, very important, this will be our fourth Toyota. Extreme reliability. The dealer is about 400m from our house and is terrific.

    Hi there.
I will get this car in a week...can't wait.
The b-mode of the CVT stands for breaking. Usefull for driving in areas with hills and mountains.
Actually I love CVT's. In a hybrid the ECVT is part of the way the drive systems act together. (Planetary Gear Set). That's why you can never order a Toyota Hybrid with a manual. Don't regret!
Agreed that Toyota should have add extra dampening materials to the doors and other places. I will do it myself if really neccesary.
Thnx for the review. It's one of the better ones.

Happy Holidays & thank you Thomas - great driving parts as always. Good demo of Braking Warning, BLIS, ACC & "The Force"! You ask, "am I love or hate!" I'm a car enthusiast so I love all cars! I think one thing: if you drive all sorts of cars, mostly smooth, relaxing quiet & effortless cars, we found that on a trip with a new C-HR hybrid, that the car was too noisy, I found the seat a little un-comfy, and the ride harsh. But kudos to Toyota for building reliable cars! And snazzy shapes!

  • @timo9758
    @timo9758 6 років тому +4

The most common thing people use wrong in Toyota Hybrids is B-MODE. B-mode uses the petrol engine to engine-brake, this uses petrol and increases consumption even up to 0.5 litres/100km
The best way is to drive in D-mode and gently press brake pedal when wanted to slow down, while doing this the electric motor slows the car down and regenerates energy to the battery, at the same time petrol engine is turned off under optimal circumstances.
B-mode should only be used when running down very deep hills, and when normal brakes could overheat.

It's a very beautiful car and I have driven one from my Toyota dealer (while my Auris HSD was in service). I enjoyed the car, although I felt a bit cramped. I enjoyed the built quality and the hybrid system and since I have been driving a hybrid for 5 years until now I kinda got very quickly the driving concept.
What I have noticed very quickly is that the car as less power than mine, specially on acceleration, but according to the Toyota guys, they say that this hybrid version can save up to 30% more fuel than my current Auris.
Overall it is a very nice car for the city life and it's cheap on your daily commute.
What I did not enjoy was the infotainment system.
    Great review!

I have a C-HR Lime Editon with the 1.8 CVT engine.
I have several points to raise:
The 'B' mode on the gear selection is for engine 'Braking'. In normal 'D' mode, when going down hills, the car may accelerate slightly (gravity gets to play with the car). Put the gearbox into 'B' mode and the engine is used to stop the acceleration and can also help to slow the car down without using the wheel brakes. The recharging you keep going on about, is as a function of the engine slowing the car down and is not the reason for the 'B' mode.
The second point is regarding your observations of the car's acceleration when you get onto the dual carriageway. You don't mention, so I'm assuming you were not aware, that there are three driving modes available via the small digital screen on the dashboard. There's an 'Eco', 'Normal' and 'Sport' mode available. When the car is first started, it is in 'Normal' mode (I'm assuming you were driving in 'Normal' mode). Putting it into 'Sport' mode improves the throttle response making overtaking easier and quicker. The 'Eco' mode makes the car less responsive to the throttle to allow for smoother and slower acceleration and therefore more economical driving.
I also have to disagree with your comfort statements. I have just returned from a 1500 mile trip from the UK to France and back. My passengers and I found the seats very comfortable. As to the suspension, we also found it very comfortable on rough roads, with a slight amount of roll on cornering. I would like the suspension to be a bit stiffer (www.fensport.co.uk/ may be getting a return client for this as they supply suspension mods for the C-HR). Maybe the German versions have a slightly 'sportier' setup to the British versions in the suspension department? overall I find the handling quite responsive, reassuring and fun and find the car holds the road really well both in the dry and the wet.
I find the all round visibility very good. Those areas where driver position visibility is impared are covered by technology such as the lights that light up on the wing mirrors and the camera view when in reverse gear.
Otherwise, I agree with what you say about the car. That infotainment system could be a lot better. Selecting an address in the Sat Nav is slow and tedious. Changing from Radio AM to Radio FM to Radio DAB to Aux to iPod is a bit like watching glaciers melt. It takes time (though not as long as on a Yaris SR with Tomtom and my two GT 86s) to initially 'read' the data on my iPod delaying the selection and use of the iPod option. The response to the 'buttons' on the screen generally is geologically slow, resulting in unecessary re-pressing of the desired option. Also, it can't cope with Japanese (or Korean or Chinese) text from my iPod!! Strange, as it's a Japanese car. My oriental music collection shows a lot of songs called ???? ??? by an artist called ????? ??????. It does cope with the cyrillic alphabet though. This should never be an issue in the modern intenet connected world. Toyota need to reappraise their infotainment systems in all their vehicles and modernise it somewhat. For the price payed for the car, these should not be issues (I have asked my local Toyota dealership if the sofware can be updated to cope with these character sets bt apparently it can't). The hi fi sound quality is pretty good though (I have the JBL 9 speaker system).
Something you don't mention is the lack of cubbyholes available for things like holding small change for feeding car park barriers and parking space machines, notes, items that you need to access quickly while driving (passports and tickets for the ferry come to mind here) e.t.c. What is there is good, but a fold out container for holding small change and a small non-slip shelf area would be nice.
Overall I like the car despite it's faults. It's fun to drive and once the desired settings in the Sat Nav and hi fi system are selected it works well.

The main use of 'B' mode is to give engine braking when going down steep hills as it turns the ICE into an air pump and slows the car down to save over use of the friction brakes. It's the equivalent of changing down to a lower gear in a normal manual ICE car.
B mode stands for brake and not battery, it throws energy away by spinning the engine without using fuel. The car will recover less energy in B mode. When using B mode in the correct way descending down a steep hill you will hear the engine spinning and can be disconcerting the first time you hear it.
The best way to drive a Toyota/Lexus Hybrid is to just put it in D and let the car work out what mode it requires. Forcing the car to run in EV all the time wastes fuel as the ICE has to run more to recharge the battery which in turns harms your fuel efficiency.

  • @toyotaprius79
    @toyotaprius79 6 років тому +4

22:05 B-mode is only for engine braking.
B-mode doesn't intentionally charge the battery. It increases the regen power in fast hilly terrain or mountain driving. It would be able to maintain down hill speeds - but this doesn't charges the battery unless under 65%, electricity generated is sent to the other motor, spinning the engine like a vacuum pump - the more it spins, the more the car is slowing down but there's no mechanical link to do so like in a petrol car.
5:35 You're pretty much correct in most sense - but actual CVTs, with belts and false gear-shifting are the *devil's* *doing.* The Hybrid system is more interesting as in the shortest way I can put it. It's like a miniature, electricity power station with 3 generators, and an old-school pencil sharpener in it that can flex and change how much and where it gets its power to and from.

The navigation control and speed reminds me of mine from my Citroen C6 which has system from i think 2007/2008... and i think there are really strange compromises in the car... I think you are quite slim but it seems like you ass doesn't fit into the seat like it would be really tiny... What I love are your comments about the other cars passing by - it makes the review more playful :-)

I just find when Toyota does something different or daring to get attention, it's usually a mixed bag that could go either way. With C-HR luckily it's more good ( same with Century ) than bad ( new Camry, Prius and Mirai ). Not a fan how the designers' integrated the info-screen.

    Thanks for the review, Thomas!
You can put me in the LOVE camp for the looks. I think it looks really good. But the very limited view due to the massive C pillars and small rear windows is a big downside, also making the rear seats an unattractive place to be..
Now it apparently drives better than the Toyota's of old, but it seems to all fall apart after that. Lack of comfort from the suspension, too much noise and a gutless drive train. Pity.
If they would add a more powerful engine option, like a 1.6 turbo petrol or the hybrid system from the RAV4 I'm sure it woud already improve a lot. Also because you wouldn't have to work the engine that hard, making it more silent.
Add some sound insulation and rework the suspension setup and most concerns would be addressed. Maybe they will do such things with a face lift? I hope so, I'd love to see a lot of them on the road. (As long as I don't have to drive in it! :-))

One of the best review I've seen from you in terms of pointing out the details, I don't know what people want who complains about biasing, do they really need to hear only sweet words about cars they like or to have rare opportunity to really choose a good car? German cars are really good on details, haven't you driven them ever? Yes, my emotional side often looks for something different, but rational always comes back to german cars, just how it is now, no bias.

This car shines in the urban driving. Previous car I had, a Mazda 3 G120 AT I was getting about 12-14l /100 km in urban traffic in Brussels, with C-HR hybrid arround 5. So no, it is not only 1l of fuel consumption the difference. It is a bit noisy when you accelerate but otherwise ok.

Hi Thomas! I usually think that your videos are simply the best! But this time I found that there´s no comments about important things such as the way the rear door is opened, and the rear window, for instance. I think that rear door handle is not practic at all, any children will be able to open rear door without the help of an adult. Also about the rear windows, due to that particular shape I think that visibility for passengers insidi will be very limited, could you confirm that?
    thanks for all your videos!

hey Roberto, did you really watch the whole review? I went in-depth on the rear door handles, I showed the child-safety-lock on the inside, and I mentioned in the driving part that the blind-spot-monitor is crucial option due to the back visibility in the side-rear part.

Really nice review. I think the exterior looks great but the interior is not practical and as you showed the infotainment is embarrassing. You mentioned if it was worth it to get and hybrid for only a liter by 100 km. Based on the last 2 cars i have been driving a golf 1.4 tsi and a V40 d2 compared to a Kia niro the consumption is at least 30% in favor of the kia niro hybrid. i think one reason besides efficiency is that hybrids makes you drive more eco-friendly. Hybrids are also more "sensitive" in terms of fuel economy to cold weather.

The Honda is roomier (backseats and boot) but everything else in better on C-HR, the Honda is based on a smaller and more basic Jazz platform while C-HR on more modern Prius 4 TNGA platform.

Hi Thomas, I thank you very much for this review, as I was one of the people requesting it, great to see we can be heard and interact. As usual splendid images and very detailed and interesting review !
As you asked feedback of owners, I’ll give you mine as we own a hybrid C-HR for one year now. Interestingly, our other car is a Mercedes GLA 200 (petrol) 7G-DCT, so I can compare the C-HR with german premium car, more about this later.
About the look, we were mindblowed by it, and one year later, still in love :) Lots of attention and sympathy from people on parkings and on the road :)
About the fuel consumption : after 13500 km we are at 5.2 doing lots of small travels of less than 10 km (www.spritmonitor.de/de/detailansicht/808405.html), and this is not just one liter economy, but rather 2, the Juke it replaced was at 7.5 (1.6 petrol CVT, same use : www.spritmonitor.de/de/detailansicht/726630.html) and my GLA is at 7.4 (www.spritmonitor.de/de/detailansicht/708688.html)…
As you said the model is very well equipped, I agree the interface of GPS/media is too slow but I’d add the JBL sound is very good, could be on premium models (+/- equal to Harman Kardon on GLA). Let’s also say that you have free updates of system and maps for 5 years here, 2-3 updates/year which is nice.
About the fit and finish, I don’t have the same problems you showed on the hatch door or on the armrest… on contrary the dashboard is more solidly built than the one on GLA !
Also about suspension and confort : I think this is a strong point and not a weak one, it feels at least as comfortable as my GLA (which has « confort » suspension, not the AMG sport version and also 18 » wheels). Cornering is also good and the C-HR doesn’t roll in turns, but GLA is definitely more agile and dynamic in this sector.
It’s interesting to see how you « evolve » in you review, first thinking the C-HR in underpowered on autobahn, then finding that’s no sportscar after all, and that it’s very nice to drive in town : this is what people will experiment when driving a hybrid after a turbo-diesel or turbo petrol engine, it needs some accommodation in your way of driving (« pulse and glide ») but it ends up to be very relaxed and pleasant driving experience. For the C-HR, we had no need for accomodation because this was not our first hybrid, we had a Honda Insight hybrid before, so we already knew what to expect and how to drive, but I must say the C-HR is much more refined than the Honda. Actually this is another kind of driving pleasure, the fun to use most of the time the electric motors to cruise gently instead of racing agressively, maybe if more people drove this car there would be less crashes and dead people on the roads…
You find the C-HR loud in acceleration because it’s so silent at stable speed; but sound insulation is not really worse than in GLA (ok GLA isn’t the best in class on this ;) ). On the highway there’s no problem at all to cruise at 120-130 and still overtake, like any compact car of this power.
About reliability, only one year but not a single problem and on specialized forums, no problems to mention, and the same for Prius 4 and Auris hybrids, so I think this technology is very reliable and also cheap to maintain. If you have other questions, feel free to ask :)
