Chess is a complete circle. When you're 400 elo you trade random bishops and knights and play moves that make no sense. When you reach 3600 elo you again trade random bishops and knights and play moves that make no sense.
At 4:49 I was extremely confused why Stockfish didn't push the F pawn to trap the bishop so I tried the position in the stockfish analysis. Turns out if you do that, you'd be losing back not only a knight, but also will be losing 2 pawns and have a completely losing position 6-7 moves later. These machines are crazy
it felt kinda obv to me. if you push the pawn black can trade their 2 pawns for a bishop but on the other hand, white gets super active queen, blacks king hasn't castled and is directly in front of the rook and whites bishop move would be a double attack move as it will also open the e file for the rook. all that is more than enough to compensate a piece let alone a pawn. In short, its like smoking a cigarette. You will get temporary relief but in long run, its deadly.
I second this. I also wonder: are there certain position types that Leela does better at than Stockfish? Or, when Leela wins is it just out-chess-computer-ing Stockfish?
I recommend you add evaluations from the point of view of leela and stockfish. It is funny that sometimes those evaluations diverge and the weaker engine realizes too slowly that it lost.
It‘s so fascinating to watch chess computers playing chess on an unreal level. It‘s just like watching two gods throwing some lightning bolts at eachother.

Hey Levy. About a 15 months ago, I discovered your channel. Your content is so good not just because of its value to newer players like myself, but also your personality, which kept me coming back even when I was discouraged. You were a major contributor to my interest in chess; me and many others I'm sure. I am currently in between rounds in my first ever chess tournament, sitting on 3/4 points and in contention to finish pretty well (tournament has ~50 players, maybe finishing top 5 depending on how round 5 goes). Just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for all the instructional content and for all that you contribute to the chess community, especially beginners/early intermediates. Best of luck on your journey to GM.
At 4:49, I was perplexed as to why Stockfish did not push the F pawn to trap the bishop, so I tried the position from the stockfish analysis. It turns out that if you do so, you would lose not only a knight, but also two pawns, resulting in a fully losing position 6-7 moves later. These machines are crazy!

Leela outcalculates Stockfish in that second game with the most insanely un-human sequence of moves I’ve ever seen. The fact that it saw that fortress so far in advance is just nuts. It’s chess on a completely different plane. Breathtaking stuff.
I think you should also explain that what makes TCEC special is that it uses absolute top-of-the-line hardware to run the engines, and the tournament uses very long time controls (typically hours), in order to get the absolutely best chess in existence. (This is unlike most other computer chess tournaments that tend to use rapid or even blitz time controls, and they rarely use absolute top-of-the-line hardware to run them.)
not trapped, pawn is protected only by night, the other pown can not take is in check. Take pawn with Bf4, Nf4, Qf4 and pawn can not take or you take his king with the rook
it does but then knight jumps atting queen to e4 to somewhere and the king file opens up and its loosing for black( little bit) so its bad move to trap.

SF 17 already knew that the second game would be a draw if played perfectly since the beginning of its "attack". In contrast, Stockfish 16 Lite (HCE) evaluations can be inflated at lower depths due to their reliance on heuristics. NNUE evaluates positions with a focus on practical winning chances, prioritizing dynamic potential and real-world playability. Engines win and lose games because of the starting position (they use an opening book) and sometimes, time management. If you set up a tournament where Stockfish plays the weakest engine that can be found playing in TCEC from the default starting position, every single game would be a draw.
the fact that white made its position look like it was playing fischer random is crazy in the first game. The bot basically rearranged its pieces around blacks king
The Bishop just takes on F4, because the pawn on E5 is pinned to the king by the pool on E1 (when the Bishop moves) And if knight takes Bishop the queen just takes, and the pawn is still pinned
@riskypearl8496 obviously, commenters just want clarification because its not easy to understand what the engines are thinking, especially when levy doesnt go over it

white gets a huge positional advantage by just sacing the bishop for 2 pawns... something close to +2
The Bishop just takes on F4, because the pawn on E5 is pinned to the king by the pool on E1 (when the Bishop moves)
And if knight takes Bishop the queen just takes, and the pawn is still pinned
