- Victorian Edinburgh's children lived in such squalid conditions that it can barely be described as an existence at all. You will witness a scale of poverty difficult to comprehend - one where children (that scarcely ever attended school), wore scraps of clothing and rarely saw anything of life other than the dingy holes where they slept and the filthy gutters of the closes in which they suffered to languish their days. This was the life of 19th Century slum kids in Edinburgh.

Congratulations on putting into perspective today's gripes about living standards. Even in the 1950s and 60s Edinburgh like Glasgow had many squalid areas before the slum clearances which I personally witnessed. Today most commentators depict the UK as living an idealised high life off the back of its exploited empire. The vast majority of UK citizens were far from any benefits they were exploited, very poor, slaves to the industrial machine and very short lived. A brief investigation into any family history will tell this story. My grandfather was widowed twice by his 22nd birthday as his wives either died on childbirth or from infections caught in factories. His third wife when he was 24 lived or I would not be here. Thank goodness for modern life!
This poverty as described was so extreme; lives of utter despair and horror. Those poor children sounded like they were suffering from scurvy.
My mother was from Edinburgh, one of 9 children living in one room. They lived in The Vennel at No 1 Browns Place, they rented the room which had originally been the Earl of Wemyss drawing room. My mother had a milk round when she was 11 years old, when my husband was doing our family tree, on my grandmothers side, we had been related to the Wemyss family a few generations back, just goes to show how times can change 😢
That’s a very hard life to imagine speaking from today’s world, though no doubt a difficult and hard life in many ways - from living conditions to food. Thank you for sharing your story.

Imagine living in one of Edinburgh's squalid slums in this time and when you go home your roommates all have dysentery and the whole building is damp and reeking of urine and feces while rats scurry around everywhere. And then you remember you have to get up at 4:30 AM to work at the lead paint factory for 14 hours for 6 pence a day and half your coworkers have Cholera.
I bet it made picking pockets look damned attractive.
A dystopian vision, but sadly with much reality.

@@SiiriCressey I wouldn't have picked pockets but probably would have robbed Queen Victoria's castles, no security cameras back then and apparently it was dam easy to rob the palace. Some street kid named Thomas Jones did it all the time, like the kid just went in the castle and took whatever he wanted scurrying around like a rat.
But hey, free rat meat.
It appears that at this time there were desperate slums in most large cities: lower Manhattan, specifically the 5 points neighbourhood, London, Glasgow & Paris. This happened after large numbers of people left the countryside for the city in search of what they hoped to be a better life.

Now I know why my great-grandparents fled to America from Europe ...not that American tenements were better, but there was hope, and there was actually somewhere else to go (west!) Their grandchildren all went to college ... unfathomable in the class system in which they were stuck.

There's a building in the city I live in that still has a rabbit Warren of random rooms and corridors. It's amazing to see how any bit of random space was bricked off and rented to a family. I'd love to get in there and take some photos before it eventually gets demolished.

I would love to see that! I remember the warrens of alleyways and tiny little roads snaking all through the city; as Dickensian as you can get these days
I remember visiting the heavy flagstone capital of Edinburgh some four or five years ago; in no other city have I had so acute an impression of existing in the nineteenth-century.
Truly, there is something so inchoate, so Dickensian about that dark, eternal city-skyline that one felt positively ransported back to the Victorian era.
Did you visit the Edinburgh Vaults? If you did, what was your experience?
@@FactFeast sadly not! I was only there for around half a day, waiting for other friends to continue a journey to east wemyss - I explored the castle though! Fantastic views; and that’s the vantage point where I had that experience of a timewarp.

I have been in these vaults or homes in Edinburgh and I know the squalor these poor people had to live in. The spoiled society most of us live in now cannot imagine how cruel and sorry life was for the poor at that time.
I think this has been the hardest one of these to listen to, those poor souls. 💔

So sad. My great granny was from Edinburgh and very poor, I do hope it wasn't this awful for her
what fasinates me is that many of the tenements in the old town are still standing and now cost a fortune to own or rent. The poor of today live in the outskirts in schemes many in poverty and some still in terrible housing. Many of the so called wonderful new flats are being pulled down and replaced in these schemes. what did the buliders of then know that we don't

I would think that the previous generations of victorian times wouldn't have been any better.
Technology and attitudes has lifted most out of poverty, in our western countries, however it seems the behaviour and corruption of the richest hasn't changed much at all, so much so that I feel they are pulling us slowly bach to the Rookery.
That's what happens in limited space without birth control

Yes, awful lives for many of these children. Their parents fell into poverty, but a lot of these kids were born into it and knew no other life. Thank you for your comment.

Great narrative voice. Very expressive. Diligently researched. Of course, these people are long dead so my sympathy is fleeting. They'd be just as dead now if they'd had clean water.
I wonder, if for a change of pace, you would do an episode on the sybriatic lives of Victorian capitalists, bearing in mind that dentistry was literal torture no matter how rich you were. But I assume they had cheerier lives. Britain was fantastically wealthy compared to the rest of the world (note, the US surpassed the UK in per capita GDP in the 1820s and never looked back, but Britain had a larger economy and reserves of wealth that were unrivaled).
What about the sunny side of the street? Haven't we had enough scruffy urchins and disembowled prostitutes for awhile (no disrespect intended)?

What kind of government lets all these building owners rent these filthy places to human beings! It never occured to me that people in England could live in such dreadful conditions!!!
It really saddens me to know that so many women, men and children had a hopeless life for who knows how many generations? When I think of England I usually think of its beautiful gothic architecture, their great ships, their advance nautical skills, their great writers, poets, castles, kings and queens, of their industrial era, how proper they seem to be, after all they were An Empire for quite a long time. As we all know Empires are usually build to a great cost, and the prize is paid by the poor!. Thanks for sharing history.

Edinburgh’s South Bridge is an 18th century road bridge within the city centre. When it was built, a series of chambers were created under the street, within the arches of the structure. Originally, local businesses used them as storage. But the chambers were dark and damp and became unsuitable. So, over time, criminals began to use them for illegal activities such as gambling and making alcohol. There were even rumours that the notorious serial killers, Burke and Hare, may have hidden bodies there. Many Edinburgh ghost stories are set down here in the chambers of South Bridge. And today, you can visit these arches under the bridge yourself disappointed 😞

Just imagine if free birth control or any at all available (there were ways) from the 17thc how fewer of us would be here now 🤔 can't expect that when they lack food, clothing or anything else; not even basic care or shoes for their feet. In one of your previous vids you said they drank beer instead of water b/c beer was healthier ... no doubt it was. Human misery is w/out end in some places even today

Did many not have PTSD then , or were they simply hardier mentally than today , or did they just bury it and keep going despite the mental anguish? So many of us have ancestors from places like this...at what point did it get better for them, which generation did it happen in, and how did it happen? Clearly millions died but...many didn't and somehow rose out of it. It's unimaginable to think of not just the children but the parents helpless to improve their children's lives. Unreal that civilized nations with affluence allowed children and poor to suffer this way.

Having German and Irish ancestry I've never heard much of Scotland's woes. I find myself morbidly fascinated and think I see why the Scots have such a reputation for toughness and fatalism.
At 1:02 the women are wearing clothing that doesn't look that old, I'd guess maybe 1920's-1940's? It just shows how bad the housing conditions were even within living memory.
At 9:50 the picture looks like the burnt remains of a ship.
So many illnesses ran rampant back then. We are very lucky.
