Good for the ones that were reduced to begging and developing schemes to survive. People that could help were so greedy they wouldn't and walked around looking down their noses at the poor. A person has to survive or starve to death. I imagine that would drive a person to do anything they had to in order to survive.
Shades of Sherlock Homes! "The Man with the Twisted Lip." The story of man supposedly murdered by a beggar who is, in reality, the same man in the disguise of that beggar. He made a better living begging, and lived in a large villa in Lee, than he did working as a banker in the city but, naturally, hid this from his family and respectable associates. Thanks for providing the real narrative, it's far more revealing.

Unfettered capitalism is the real blight and sadly it's been on the rise again since the late 70s/early 80s (in the UK and USA at least) meaning the wealth gap has grown more and more unfortunately. Add to that the less attention paid to "white collar crime" compared to the likes of shoplifting or small drug possession for personal use makes the quote "money talks" all the more true
Yes, I'm sure there were dishonest vagrants and the reports have truth (though the final police report appears unfair and vindictive), but the reality is that most were on the streets for no other reason than being destitute.

How are you doing sir thank you for your wonderful cultural documentary channel. Actually begging is considered crime in Arabic countries and beggars will put in jail if police men see them anywhere. Yes some people pretend they are so poor to make persons give them money or steal money till nowadays. As always iam gathering main information about topics you mentioned briefly here it’s begging ( also known as panhandling) is practice of imploring others to grant favor , often gift of money with little or no exceptions. Person doing this called beggar or panhandler. Begging operate in public places such as streets, markets , parks . Beside money they may also ask for food , drinks , cigarettes or other small items.
Last and most important part of my research poverty was highly visible problem in 18 th century. The British poor laws dating from renaissance placed various restrictions on begging. Various times , begging was restricted to time disabled. This system developed into workhouses , state operated institution where those unable to obtain employment were forced to work in often grim conditions in exchange for small amount of food. The welfare state of 20 th century greatly reduced number of beggars of directly providing for necessities from state funds .common crime in Victorian time was pickpocketing. Punishment for stealing in Victorian time , other crimes such as rape , robbery, burglary, arson was punishable by death. Sorry I read below my comments last time some subscribers said my comments is unreadable may be because idont use punctuation. Best wishes for you your family friends.

There is no escaping the debate of the morality of everything. edit: I don't know that for certain, I have never made my own corporation to become rich, nor become a CEO to manage anything which may go wrong, and can't speculate on the moral or absence of moral reasoning of speculation.
Yes. No living wage. Seasonal work even for bootmakers etc. The working poor around Drury Lane/ St Giles must have inspired Marx, renting close by, to focus on the importance of labour. His secular Christianity, in many ways. Mayhew wrote accounts which are still shocking. And religious reformers. And Dickens etc. Fascinating times.
Yet today, the working class of the western world are having their incomes, housing and quality of life destroyed by a huge influx of people from other countries. These folk encouraged to come / stay, by those in positions of power for financial or political gain.
@@FactFeast o yes please. Have you already posted them? I’ve been doing some family history. My lot came from Buckinghamshire to live just off Drury Lane. I’m thinking My Fair Lady etc until I saw the poverty map and their street is right up against a black section ie dire poverty & moral corruption. Poor blighters. They remained together though, and mutually supportive. I think their non conformist faith had a strong social support component. I’ve read some of the transcripts of Lady Huntingdon’s Connexion. The group was discussing which of the group was in direst need- a widow with children was awarded 10/- for the month I think. Glad some supported each other. Meanwhile two of the young lads decided to ‘get creative’ in earning money beyond boot making and ended up travelling to Australia at government expense. Lucky break as it turns out. We have their talents but with educational opportunity and a decent diet (we are no longer a stunted 5’1” at adulthood). We are flourishing- but I’m aware we are standing on the shoulders of these long suffering survivors. Your videos are so interesting.
@Sour Wes It makes everything sound comical when it's not at all. And the subject matter is really bad nothing funny at all. Every one of these videos is like that. The awful workhouses,, the terrible way children were treated, these are serious subjects and no need for making any of them sound otherwise.
And it grinds my nerves to powder. I can't usually finish a video. Too much trying to make it sound comical and there's nothing comical about these people's lives or rather existence because spending every minute begging and worrying about their next meal and how long in between that will be isn't a life.

The voice over really contributed to bringing me back to the period. Thank you!
Thanks! I’m glad the narration brought the history to life for you.

A very interesting analogy! Thank you for sharing.
It’s interesting that the myth that panhandlers make tons of money has been hoodwinking gullible rubes for centuries.
Another really interesting video. The inventiveness of the poor and dishonest is nothing short of eye opening. Thank you.
This is returning to our world 🌎 right at this time. How tragic! The Victorian period is slowly returning.

Ah, those horrible poor people trying to survive by being crafty. A proper gentleman was better by birthright. Oh, and the family inheritance.
Exactly 😆
Great video. Thanks for making it
You're welcome. Thanks for your comment.
During the depression, my grandmother set out plates of food for the poor. She also worked at soup kitchen.
My grandmother’s family feed vagabonds passing through, hosting them in the barn of their homestead. Tough times.
My grandmother flew to Mars and dropkicked an alien bear.
