You won't look down at your desk over and over again, as someone might when looking at a source (book, note, etc) that they are not supposed to be using. What is flagged depends on the algorithm. Additionally, the AI proctor has no authority. It simply flags a student's behavior as suspicious. The instructor can then review those few (hopefully) flagged students. I've had many students flagged by non-AI proctors (as in real people) who were clearly not cheating. If you're looking off into space while thinking, I will recognize that and dismiss the flag. However, I've also had some that were blatantly cheating (one copied questions into a chat, then waited for someone to send back the solutions.) Without a remote proctor, I would never had known.

My concern as well due to eye strain. They also tend to water, forcing me to look away from the screen (and of course tissue my eyes). I'm troubled this may "trigger" some false reaction since I have a (my first) proctored exam coming up; and typically don't cheat.

Honestly school is cheating us. We are forced to be in school (I think we should) but we have to memorize half a years worth of useless stuff. Don’t you call that a waste of time? I have taken a few proctored tests. If anyone recalls, they are full of questions and typically stressful. I stretched my arms and my entire test stopped. I had to scan my room several times. I eventually fold the proctor there was nothing more to see. I was so angry. It’s human to move and look around. Not everyone cheats.
I hate this, I get horrible test anxiety and I have a test in a few hours. I have issues with sleeping regardless of how ready I am. A method that has helped me is to write on my test the information I am struggling the most to retain the moment I get the test, it takes me maybe a minute or two: I’m not using notes, I don’t have extra paper, and all of my professors are ok with it. Now I can’t do that, and the thought of taking this test with someone observing in such a manner is freaking me out. Not only that but my house is full of people at the moment and my entire house is not a good place for test taking. This is ridiculous. I personally find this method horrible, very stressful, and the farthest from natural as far as imitating the experience of taking a physical face to face test goes.
I only studied a lot when i went for the first time last year at but the second time was so easy, all thanks to my aunt who introduced me to Mrs Virginia am really grateful
Why do people even care about the cheating ? I cheated the entire online semester I don’t feel GULITY because I don’t copy from other people I just get the answers from my book or other tests in case the question got repeats again
I honestly don’t think they actually track/watch you, they just say they do to scare you, leading you not to cheat. Update: I’ve recently took it on proctor U, the lady made me carry my laptop around (because I was using the camera pre built into the laptop) and show her every angle of my room and then I also had to show her my desk and all 4 corners of the walls. Next I was taking a math test so I had to show her my blank pieces of paper and she checked every one of them to make sure there’s nothing on them. After that she took control of my laptop and she even closed my logetic mouse app. I did try and contact her towards the end of the test for something but no response so she must’ve been there only for the start then dipped out. An easy way anyone can cheat is if you have the invisible ink pen and you show her that the paper is empty but then u shine a UV light on it, but there was no point in doing that for me.
While not actually true, you are right that it works mostly as a deterrent. It's not actually catching people cheating too often, but rather the possibility of getting caught is keeping them from trying. Some companies with human remote proctors even offer random sampling review (i.e., not all students are reviewed, but the students don't know whether they will be or not) as a reduced cost option.

About 10% of my summer class students were "flagged" by their live person proctors, so I needed to review their recordings. I'm reluctant to switch to the AI, as that reporting rate may go up. I'm told if the AI flags it, it does get reviewed by a person at the company before being sent to me....

We use Proctorio, which lets you customize the sensitivity to around 10 different things (key stroke rate, eye movement, people in the room, etc.) You can even change these while reviewing. For example, if you are finding too many falsely flagged for eye movement, then you can go to settings and adjust that slider down. When you go back, fewer students will be flagged. It basically scores each student on the the ten categories and sets thresholds for a weighted total score, and then you can choose the multipliers (weights) dynamically. The students don't know your settings; they just no that they're being scored by the Ai.

I’d say that the most important deterrent as you mentioned is the psychology behind having someone or someTHING monitoring you. This actually deters most people from cheating. Just like cameras and guards are used to deter theft in stores. But as we all know a minority will still do it. Some people are more comfortable taking risks than normal people.
My fear is when the proctors never go away, I found an app had hidden itself inside my factory downloaded battery app. It would control my mic and cam and my phone would never actually turn off or reboot. I love your videos, technology is horrifying in many senses.

Oh trust me, I've been to reddit and its full of people who've bypassed the program by placing their mobile phones in front of the screen (out of webcam's view), completely disconnected from the internet and look up all their notes. They'll appear to be looking right at the screen.

Even if I take the test in the bathroom, they can still bang on the locked door. I think they need to consider how important is a "closed-book" model, a timed test, etc, vs a longer "take-home" testing model for the actual goals of a course.

My preferred approach is to redesign assessments so that they test higher levels of understanding and so that answers aren't easily Googled. Testing in general seems to be a 20th-century approach to assessing whether a students has met the learning objectives of a course - and in-person or AI proctoring seems to be a digital crutch for an outmoded methodology. What do you think?

2 monitors, a VPN, a VM, you're pretty much set. Bypassing keylog software should be simple, open all the software needed on the VM, webcam, essays, everything. Then you do all the cheating on the actual machine. The keylogger should not be able to detect anything outside of the VM. Bypass hardware keylogger with virtual keyboard. The mouse clicks will be a red flag, hundreds of mouse clicks while no words are being typed will be very suspicious. I guess you should prepare all notes beforehand, and pull up any websites to refer. Documents, etc. Sorry for thinking so far on this, my exams will only occur after lockdown so I won't be able to cheat.
What if you connect your HDMI cable to a TV screen and an external keyboard to your computer, and have someone else cheat their Google searches into your computer through the projection?

Set up a hidden camera in your room facing toward your monitor and have your mom or sister google the answers for you. Put AirPods in and cover your ears with hair, calling the family member on the phone (low volume, and they are the only ones talking.) Hard work but I guaranteed nobody will look past the scheme
What about taking the test and having someone that comes in after you scan the room and then you write the questions down they work the problem then slide them to you and you enter them in. Think that would work?
I have done this in actual college in person, we where 5 girls who would help eachother, the only difference is that we had to take a picture of the test at a moment where the professor wasn’t watching and send it to our friend, then we would just hear the answers! Asa former professor, I can testify that cheating has been rampant at universities for decades. Even if AI works well to detect cheating, administrators will be able to prevent cheaters from feeling consequences. If tuition is a primary source of income, it is more likely that cheating will be ignored.
Having been recently forced online I am now well versed on using these online proctors. I hate being on camera, do you think that the AI algorithms are able to differentiate between nervous ticks and "suspicious" behavior? Also do you have any information on how math professors catch students using apps like photo math? my math professor claims she can but I cant find any information on how she would even be able to do that. DEFINITIVE WAY •Check the app they gon use for your simulator • Look for a space where without doubt your phone could fit on the pc screen • Stick ur phone to the screen and turning off the wifi •Look or buy a device which makes possible to use your phone (could be a bluetooth mouse, if anyone knows other please let me know) • and finally: Get that test!
We dont have exams in my countries but we have verbal exams, and whenever I get asked something i get anxious and cant focus on one single dot or I mess up what im going to say. A few teachers have accused me of cheating because of that, it really sucks.

I don't believe they can. Whatever is on your camera is what I believe is all they can see. They would have to be able to move the top half of the computer to face the camera down to look at what you're doing which just isn't possible for proctoring extensions... Yet.
I mean it's one thing to detect likely cheating, but another thing to prove it. If the material stays off camera it's not very easy to prove cheating. Since to get caught students basically have to cooperate to get caught.
Or you show your desk and your surrounding to the examiner before beginning, and then directing your camera to your desk, with half of your face visible during the exam with your sound on. That's what we do and we have 2 persons watching us during the entire exam.
The AI can't detect other devices around you. But what the AI algorithm(s) CAN do is evaluate your eye movements. If the AI thinks you're looking off-screen (such as at your cell phone), then it could flag that activity. A human will have to evaluate (watch) the recorded video to make a final determination of whether your eye movements constituted cheating. The question then becomes, were you looking off screen at a source of answers, or just gazing elsewhere while in thought, attempting to recall what you've studied?

@aaaaaaaaaaaa1111a tape your phone on the bezzle of your laptop(most phones and laptops have materials that the glue won't stay) and just connect a wireless mouse on your phone(if its a cheap one like mine, it has a USB Bluetooth receiver so you need a dongle) It looks just like your trying to read from your laptop... P.s. dont forget to turn off sound and vibration... and set the screen to 10 min time off
Our exams are tomorrow where we have to write it on google meet and a teacher must be supervising us the whole time, I am still confident enough about my copying skills but teachers told that they would be using Auto proctor from their end so I just wanna know is it like two way software where we have to scan our face and surrounding aswell or our teachers are just bluffing because they just told they would use it from the laptop of supervisor while we just write paper on meet and submit (upload the answers as pdf) later on Google form. I have taken online exams and quizzes that used respondus monitoring just recently. Pretty cool so nobody gets an unfair advantage but, feels kind of invasive at the same time. I look slightly towards the left because I have a 27 inch curved gaming monitor and sometimes get nervous of being flagged for cheating. I know what to do if it says “Closed notes closed book and respondus lockdown browser with monitor” which is to just prepare for it before taking it.
I don’t want to cheat, butttttt my professor makes this class impossible and we only get 4 tests. So I HAVE to pass. I’ll just make sure to be eating my breakfast during the time of this test so if it looks suspicious my professor will just see that any “questionable” activity is just me eating lmao. This lockdown browser is a joke and a complete invasion of privacy though. Definitely should be looked into more for spying on us because it has access to us, in our homes, our audios, and my house is LOUD, our screens, with PERSONAL information, and then wants us to show the camera a view of the room we are sitting in. Complete invasion of my personal space and life.
Put your mic sensitivity very very low if asked say you have a problem with the mic, the webcam won't stop you from cheating just use multiple screens or 2 devices like 2 laptops with hidden mouse and keyboard near you

It’s invasive and unrealistic. I have ADHD and my brain is a squirrel to begin with, and amplified during exams. I always talk to myself through it and am fidgety.

eh there are always people that will cheat. nothing you can do about it. i found multiple methods to cheat this too. its not impossible.

I honestly don’t think they actually track/watch you, they just say they do to scare you, leading you not to cheat.
Update: I’ve recently took it on proctor U, the lady made me carry my laptop around (because I was using the camera pre built into the laptop) and show her every angle of my room and then I also had to show her my desk and all 4 corners of the walls. Next I was taking a math test so I had to show her my blank pieces of paper and she checked every one of them to make sure there’s nothing on them. After that she took control of my laptop and she even closed my logetic mouse app. I did try and contact her towards the end of the test for something but no response so she must’ve been there only for the start then dipped out. An easy way anyone can cheat is if you have the invisible ink pen and you show her that the paper is empty but then u shine a UV light on it, but there was no point in doing that for me.
While not actually true, you are right that it works mostly as a deterrent. It's not actually catching people cheating too often, but rather the possibility of getting caught is keeping them from trying. Some companies with human remote proctors even offer random sampling review (i.e., not all students are reviewed, but the students don't know whether they will be or not) as a reduced cost option.

We use Proctorio, which lets you customize the sensitivity to around 10 different things (key stroke rate, eye movement, people in the room, etc.) You can even change these while reviewing. For example, if you are finding too many falsely flagged for eye movement, then you can go to settings and adjust that slider down. When you go back, fewer students will be flagged. It basically scores each student on the the ten categories and sets thresholds for a weighted total score, and then you can choose the multipliers (weights) dynamically. The students don't know your settings; they just no that they're being scored by the Ai.

Oh trust me, I've been to reddit and its full of people who've bypassed the program by placing their mobile phones in front of the screen (out of webcam's view), completely disconnected from the internet and look up all their notes. They'll appear to be looking right at the screen.

I think they need to consider how important is a "closed-book" model, a timed test, etc, vs a longer "take-home" testing model for the actual goals of a course.

2 monitors, a VPN, a VM, you're pretty much set. Bypassing keylog software should be simple, open all the software needed on the VM, webcam, essays, everything. Then you do all the cheating on the actual machine. The keylogger should not be able to detect anything outside of the VM. Bypass hardware keylogger with virtual keyboard. The mouse clicks will be a red flag, hundreds of mouse clicks while no words are being typed will be very suspicious. I guess you should prepare all notes beforehand, and pull up any websites to refer. Documents, etc. Sorry for thinking so far on this, my exams will only occur after lockdown so I won't be able to cheat.

Set up a hidden camera in your room facing toward your monitor and have your mom or sister google the answers for you. Put AirPods in and cover your ears with hair, calling the family member on the phone (low volume, and they are the only ones talking.) Hard work but I guaranteed nobody will look past the scheme
What about taking the test and having someone that comes in after you scan the room and then you write the questions down they work the problem then slide them to you and you enter them in. Think that would work?
I have done this in actual college in person, we where 5 girls who would help eachother, the only difference is that we had to take a picture of the test at a moment where the professor wasn’t watching and send it to our friend, then we would just hear the answers! Asa former professor, I can testify that cheating has been rampant at universities for decades. Even if AI works well to detect cheating, administrators will be able to prevent cheaters from feeling consequences. If tuition is a primary source of income, it is more likely that cheating will be ignored.

Having been recently forced online I am now well versed on using these online proctors. I hate being on camera, do you think that the AI algorithms are able to differentiate between nervous ticks and "suspicious" behavior? Also do you have any information on how math professors catch students using apps like photo math? my math professor claims she can but I cant find any information on how she would even be able to do that. I don't believe they can. Whatever is on your camera is what I believe is all they can see. They would have to be able to move the top half of the computer to face the camera down to look at what you're doing which just isn't possible for proctoring extensions... Yet.

If the material stays off camera it's not very easy to prove cheating.
Since to get caught students basically have to cooperate to get caught.
Or you show your desk and your surrounding to the examiner before beginning, and then directing your camera to your desk, with half of your face visible during the exam with your sound on. That's what we do and we have 2 persons watching us during the entire exam.

The AI can't detect other devices around you. But what the AI algorithm(s) CAN do is evaluate your eye movements. If the AI thinks you're looking off-screen (such as at your cell phone), then it could flag that activity. A human will have to evaluate (watch) the recorded video to make a final determination of whether your eye movements constituted cheating. The question then becomes, were you looking off screen at a source of answers, or just gazing elsewhere while in thought, attempting to recall what you've studied?
But what if I'm using a calculator? I need to look down to type, I can't just hold the calculator up to the webcam? Seems unfair

I have taken online exams and quizzes that used respondus monitoring just recently. Pretty cool so nobody gets an unfair advantage but, feels kind of invasive at the same time. I look slightly towards the left because I have a 27 inch curved gaming monitor and sometimes get nervous of being flagged for cheating. I know what to do if it says “Closed notes closed book and respondus lockdown browser with monitor” which is to just prepare for it before taking it.
Oh I hate lockdown browser. It causes my anxiety to surge I fear being flagged for cheating .

I don’t want to cheat, butttttt my professor makes this class impossible and we only get 4 tests. So I HAVE to pass. I’ll just make sure to be eating my breakfast during the time of this test so if it looks suspicious my professor will just see that any “questionable” activity is just me eating lmao. This lockdown browser is a joke and a complete invasion of privacy though. Definitely should be looked into more for spying on us because it has access to us, in our homes, our audios, and my house is LOUD, our screens, with PERSONAL information, and then wants us to show the camera a view of the room we are sitting in. That depends on what info the online proctor collects. Assuming it collects info on your hardware then it will detect a second monitor.

If you set up the VM correctly then it should be very difficult to detect. I would also recommend using Linux for the VM.
