This song is from the bible Ecclesiastes chapter 3. It's often read at funerals.
The Byrds are from the California in the 60s. The song is originally written by Pete Seeger a great pioneer of folk music. He was amazing. The song is exactly as you said... seasons in nature, seasons in our lives and in nations.

It was a Pete Seeger song. It's just about word for word taken from the Book Of Ecclesiastes in the bible. I think what the Birds are known best for is putting a pop spin on folk music. It led to Dylan going electric. It seem kinda an obvious thing to do now, but it was groundbreaking at the time. Pete Seeger or any of the folk artist like "Peter Paul And Mary" would be great artist to react to by the way.
Love your reaction- it’s true- things are so different now- clips of music seem to be enough- not like the groove we felt with songs that tried to teach and that lingered in our minds. On the school bus going to elementary school. It got me started listening to folk music. (My parents were all big band swing and jazz WWII generation). Lyrics are very important to that genre.

that's a very young David Crosby (of several groups but most famously Crosby, Stills, Nash ...and later also Young) , If you haven't listened to CSNand Y, hurry....you'll love it. Woodstock was their first gig!

The lyrics came from the Old Testament of the Holy Bible and the Byrds took the song to #1 in the USA.
