Glorious example and rework of a Marshall amp from that era. Ready for another 45 yrs with minimal normal services. This will become an heirloom amp for sure.
Sad day (for me) that this build had to come to an end. Being a huge Marshall fan this was one of my favourites. Cheers my friend. Always learning a lot.
This video series has been so helpful! I just built a super lead (mojotone kit) and it had noise/oscillation issues. I'm currently upgrading the grounding scheme, and other tricks from these videos. I've completed the input grounding, and added shielded wires to the inputs. Sooo helpful. The amp is way quieter, and no longer goes into oscillation when dimed. I'm going to move the rest of the ground locations next. Thank you for this wonderful and super helpful video series.
Jesus Lyle, that amp is almost human..! Lovely build so meticulous and full of info...Fab build and great videos on this amp..Thanks for sharing..Ed..uk..😀
What an awesome rebuild, personalized and protected. Lyle you really brought the ol superlead into this century. Before and after pics would highlight the miracle work you perform.
I wouldn't mind these getting viewed like "Jose" Marshalls, etc. I need a client to get famous. ;) I think the days of star rock guitarists are behind us though.
@@PsionicAudio I don!t think it’s too far fetched to think your mods could be viewed like José modded Marshall’s. Unfortunately I think you’re correct. The era of rockstar guitarists is well behind us. I don’t think there will ever be another EVH. All that’s left are old guys like myself that can still hang when it comes to playing, but living a life on the road is no longer appealing. 🤷♂️
@@PsionicAudio You might not be as famous, but I think when it comes to "Vox-flavored" stuff, you're the guy. I wasn't really a huge Vox fan before I started watching your videos, now I'm actually thinking about budgeting for an Excalibre!
Simply excellent work Lyle that work not only has vastly improved tone and noise but added years to the amps life. If I may ask, what is the resistor on the mids pot? 👍😀
Thanks! That gets complicated, and has more to do with the designer and the power supply than the device used. MOSFET, transistor, opamp, all good or all shitty depending on the design/execution. The ones I've done have been opamp with +/-15VDC rail to rail supplies, and they are transparent with no noise. There are other ways to achieve the same goal, or to add desired coloration at times. But as far as the component used, that's like choosing a car based on the radio. I know this isn't particularly helpful. Sorry, just being honest. Only way to tell if something works for you is to try it.
Aw, dagnavitt. I was hoping we'd get a look at the Normal Channel Mod! Oh, well. Thanks for the Bright Cap comparison, though. I may go from my current 220pF to a 500pF. What do you think of silver mica used in this case, as opposed to ceramic?
Fantastic work!! Your attention to detail is impeccable! What series metal film Vishays are you using on the plates and tone slope, CCF02s or PR02s? I normally use RN65s, but those have been on Fender style builds, not a higher gain circuit like a Marshall.
I use carbon composites in vintage Fender and Vox restorations (and others) and they have a particular thang in some parts of the circuit. Horses for courses.
@@PsionicAudio Thanks! I need to get some parts from Mouser so I'll add some to my order and give them a try. I'm wanting to use some different components I haven't worked with before on this hybrid Bassman build I've been putting together.
I'm curious if you kept this lead spec as I don't see the bigger yellow mustard type cap that is normally kind of slanted and bigger than the other yellow caps at the beginning of the board. Maybe on V2 I think? I'm just learning so not sure if that's correct or not. Bass spec doesn't usually have that slanted one I'm thinking of. Is that the split cathode vs shared cathode thing? I might sound stupid as I'm just trying to figure things out. Lol. Thanks Lyle really love these videos.
You don't sound stupid. We're all of us learning. Hopefully. ;) You're describing the .68uF bypass cap on V1b in a split cathode Marshall. This amp has it, I'm just not using a ridiculously overlarge component for it. Mine is a 63V, which is still much more than the actual voltage present on the cathode. And I don't slant mine because only so many leads fit in a turret. This is an objectively better construction method than Marshall used.
You mean the slope resistor? I would have used whatever was in a ‘76. 33K or 56K. I don’t have time to watch it again right now, sorry. And I’m hopeless with color bands.
@@PsionicAudio No. I was talking about the resistor you added on the center wiper and outer lug of the 50k mid you changed from the stock 25k so that the 50k doesnt alter the behavior of the stock tone stack. Youre always very generous with your advice so please feel dont rushed to respond.
Lyle! My new favourite channel by a country mile! Would you mind sharing what color coding you use for your wiring? I’m looking for a scheme to follow for my own builds, but can’t find any real “standard”
Hola tengo un marshall 5005 lead 12, trate de hacer el mod para dar mas brillo pero al poner el condensador el sonido se sube mucho. Muy fuerte. Me podrias ayudar a hacer el mod. Saludos.

Absolutely beautiful! The definition of master work: A masterpiece.
bloody nice work
Such a lovely job Lyle!!!
What a transformation! Excellent work. 👍
This amp looks amazing, Lyle! Can't wait to hear it!
Man , that is one clean amplifier! Good work!
The engineer that designed YOUR circuit perfectly matched your passion with your skill.
Is it a Marshall? Or is it a Psionic Superlead? Approaching Ship of Theseus. Excellent work sir!

Like to hear it and if you can also test with your favorite boost pedal so we can hear the amp clean and boosted
Thanks!

That's beautiful work mate. Anyone would think you've done it before haha
Wish you would hand wire my TBX. Beautiful work!
I enjoy your content. If you don't mind me asking minus the cabinet and chassis how much about was the cost for parts all together roughly?
Great as always, would like to hear your opinion on mosfet buffer circuits, especially fixed or self biased..? that is buffer output in preamps...
Thanks!

Is it diminishing returns to shield from the volume pots to the 470K mixers?

Ceramic I like! They have a grainy er sound. Silver mica was too smooth...didn't sound like all those crunchy recordings by countless rock bands imho

PR02s. They're great in Fenders too.
Just say no to carbons. 😄

Hey there Lyle! Is that a 47k res on the center wiper and the input on the 50k mid pot? Id like to try this and just wanted to confirm.

I love the "nothing in here is 'mojo'" statement. Guitarists are the worst with the crap they believe.
And people complaining about shielded wire robbing your tone... they're probably plugging into the amp with a 10' or 20' shielded guitar cable.
Can’t you build a window in the cabinet to show of your handy work. Shame to cover up your art work.
