Oh, and we're totally going to give this old Marshall a new better life.

I'm rolling with this Marshall till the end. Thes LONG form videos are the shit man, LOVE EM
A well thought out rescue plan! I really like how you put a lot of thought into how you lay it out. Turrets a little closer together yet far enough to keep signal to noise ratio down and avoid crosstalk, turning the bias pot for easier adjustment etc. Can’t wait to see the final rebuild! You make justifying a future purchase of one of your amps a LOT easier.
Holy Smokes. What a mess ! I bought this same amp from another service member in the early 80s while stationed at Pease Air Force Base for $300 and a small Yamaha 10 watt solid state amp ! Those days are no longer ! LOL
I started making my own PCBs years ago, when I was about 12 years old, using the etchant and a lacquer or dry transfer mask. I made descrambers for HBO and ON TV subscription pay television channels, and sold them on my paper route. I also made phone phreaking boxes for people who traveled a lot and the occasional bookmaker or drug dealer. When I started making my own stomp boxes I started making boards set up for either radial or axial caps. I never knew what I could get and it made the boards more usable when I started buying them in bulk ready made.
I love all of the pre JCM800 Marshalls. Especially the 77 JMP Lead. I installed a Metro effects loop in one and fell in love instantly. I could not believe how just unbelievably good it sounded. I have an Eminence EM12 as a bench speaker, and It still had that midrangey killer tone.
We're looking forward to seeing and hearing this.
I enjoy these videos Lyle. Keep em coming.
Man, thanks so much for mentioning the doing away of axial components. I did not know that when I built the two amps I've just completed but will do different spacing from now on!
The 3 Henry choke sounds much better in these old JMP Marshalls. I also believe 2 Henry and 3.3 Henry were used in certain 60's plexi Marshalls too.
Imagine being the bloke that did all this and went: "sweet as, all done!"
"No one will ever see what I did."
BTW if you don't know, Brad's an awesome tech. If you're in Australia, he's your man. And he has a great channel with his own amp repairs. If you like my stuff, check him out!
@@PsionicAudio A very nice compliment from a top tier amp tech to another. If Lyle says Brad is the amp guy down under, I am 100% good with that.
My mate Chris "The Guitar Amp Tech" is also great. Australia's a big place, I'll let them fight it out. Check out both their channels.

It amazing that whoever got to this messed up the whole amp. Seem like nothing escaped the super hacker.
Good decision.
Yeah, we’re not in the days of 25/25/X25 “Whale Tail” bypass caps with 7” leads. The longest leads on components I run in to are Sprague Atom high voltage axial electrolytics.
I pray that companies like Antique Electronics Supply/CE Distribution are still around in 20 years. After seeing what happened to Magnetic Components/Classictone in 2020, I don’t have much hope. Tube Depot merged with Digikey, they might make it.
I was wondering....noticed a Digikey order drop shipped via Tube Depot the other week.
Fyi..3M makes an adhesive works really well in my experience..wd40 also does a good job too..
Where do you get your fiberglass boards and terminals to make your terminal boards. I fine your videos very interesting. Thank you for your help.
Thanks!

can I get a copy of that board layout?
Hi Lyle... just curious... what software program are you using to do the actual physical layout like that? Haven't seen that before.
DIY Layout Creator
Do you build your own turret boards and source the raw materials? Or do you spec out what you want and order them in? If the latter, who do you use? I had to rebuild a 64 Princeton a couple years ago and ordered an eyelet board from Hoffman, but it seemed he was ramping down...
I have Hoffman custom make them for me. He's still going.
@@PsionicAudio Excellent--that's good to hear
Any more videos on this?
Waiting for the new board to arrive at the speed of Priority Mail. In normal times it would have been here last Thursday...
@@PsionicAudio nice. Videos are great keep em coming😃
The hack butchery of the old Marshall must have really fired you up for 3 vid's in one day. What specs are you getting in the board? I've got some Fender style kits waiting for me to start (first grand child is due next month and the wife and I are reshuffling the house, so I don't have work space yet except an A/C unit has been installed in the garge;)) I've already decided to greatly upgrade the components and eyelet boards using the kits as models. Any suggestions for suppliers would be greatly appreciated.
We called these people "sharks" back in the 80's... they were techs who didn't know shit about Marshalls... and more often than not you ended up with what see in this video.
Your on top of your game .. not alot of real craftsmanship these days.
It's areally sad to see how much damage can be done by a novice or someone without the right tools or parts. It's even worser for the customer who has to pay more to get them fixed right.
You didn't explain the tone differences between using a 3henry choke compared to using a 10henry choke? Eddie van Halen removed the choke in his plexi not sure why?
I'll address that in a later video. VH didn't take the choke out of his main Plexi. The Peavey 5150 didn't have a choke but that was because PV was doing a low budget bad copy of a Soldano and a choke was more expensive than a resistor.
@@PsionicAudio I thought evh took the choke out of his Peavy 5150 and 6505 because he didn't want the amp to chug like metal chugging when he uses his low e note as a drop d or drop c#. Which video did you explain this choke difference?
I'll discuss the choke later. Haven't yet. No, EVH didn't remove the choke from his PV or Fender because they didn't have chokes to begin with.
@@PsionicAudio Peavey and fender replaced the chokes with a series power resistor after the power supply filteration section
Wow? Really? You don't say! Thanks!
Or, when life gives you lemons, find clear liquor!
Dont copy ancient mistakes just because they are ancient
