This track to me is the essence of the genre! Hip Hop at it's purest point! Before commercialization and the "we gettin money" era. I don't mean to show my age, but unless you were old enough to remember these times you just can't understand how different it was back then. Thank goodness for UA-cam!
This MIGHT be my favorite Hip Hop tune of all time, I remember this back in '92/'93 in NY on the radio & still get goose bumps today. Thank you for putting this up! 89.9, Stretch Armstrong Show!!! I am SO glad I grew up with ALL OF THIS!!!!
@@latinlegacies8396 Honestly, it was incredible. Just such a dope era & I'm so glad I experienced it & grew up with it (I'm 40). It will never be that way again, I don't think. The UK right now has some insane MCs & producers that kinda remind me of that era, but it'll never compare. The "new & exciting" back then which was amazing b/c it was literally new, has now been twisted, reproduced & over-saturated to the point of frustration, or I'm just old, LOL!
This has me smiling for simple fact my favorite artist is a genius with street swag nd integrity nd beyond...he recieved the best traits of his father nd mother nd blessed us wit em
I just love that warm analog cassette/radio boombox sound that this demo has, reminds me of listening to stuff on the radio in the old days While I think both versions of this track have their benefits, I feel like the final album version is more polished and by then Nas had refined his style to the point that he sounded unique, while this one, while still insanely good, sounds a lot like other rappers from this time period, and if this had been the final version, he would have just faded into the background with so many other rappers of that time, instead of becoming the icon that he is now.
@@HarrisonHollers Well it's just that, the flow. Like listen to the final version vs this version, then listen to other tracks from the late 80s, a lot the tracks from this time had a flow just like this version, while the final version SOUNDS like Nas, and only Nas
Both versions are my favorite song of all time but I always loved this version more. It felt grittier and gave a real feel of not only NY but any ghetto (for me Gary IN).
I remember hearing this on Doctor Dre’s Operating Room show in 1993 on BLS. I remember thinking “This guy is bringing that golden era energy back rap”.
It’s 2024 ladies and gentlemen!! Feel the vibe
Straight recorded from the Stretch and Bob show. Love it.

No, I feel you! Show your age! I get it my man this song is cold. The best era I’m 45 and miss these days.

What distinguishes Nas voice from others of this era? I thought he separated himself because he had the best rhymes and flow.
