You're right, I remember watching this guy cutting log boards for a house he hadn't even made yet using a chainsaw board cutter. Then laying down logs and rocks in what was literally the middle of a forest. Watching this now is like witnessing evolution and I love it. I feel like it's the start of a new chapter. And I cant help but wonder what's next in store!

Just so impressed - thinking back to when you were in that little shed using your grinder and stick welder making little parts for your first micro hydro system, and now you're in a veritable cathedral for making precision components. You've done so much work and kept your vision clear. It's so inspiring.

I agree totally! I never thought when I first watched a bloke filling sandbags in the mud that I would now be watching plasma cutting in a crafted hobbit house running on water and sunlight!! Truly amazing and very inspiring.

Gonna need a bigger air storage tank or a second one the size you have for when you are using the plasma table. When using the cutter they turn both tanks open and let them fill....Looking forward to watching the builds!

A lot of shops that use those 60 to 80 gallon compressors will do double tanks. The only thing that this does is make the compressor run twice as long and have longer time between runs. This gives the user more time before the compressor kicks on. Also helps with high demand tools. Most large shops switch to a rotary screw compressors because they can deliver the required amount of air non stop with out ever losing a drop of air. They do have tank and tank less versions.

Once you own a plasma table your neighors will come asking to cut something for them. Plasma tables are pretty cool. DonnDIY made one and has used it in some of his latest projects. It really helps to make parts for just about anything. You can also made quite a bit of stuff that you can sell local as well. There are a number of things that you can make. All of your off cuts and scrap pieces will give you lots of ideas on what you can use them for. You will have a lot of scrap and that scrap is either going to be scrapped or its going to get cut in to something else.

The speed at which it goes to each cutting point is too slow which drains the compressor as the Plasma torch is still pumping air out while it's moving to it's next hole to cut out. If you increase that speed then your compressor will not cut out so much.

17:12 You may be able to massage the plasma table in the original intended corner if you remake (cnc plasma cut of course) a set of two shorter legs so the table can slide over the staircase loft. Obviously you may want to reposition the compressor as well and install a shallow tray to catch any sparks from the plasma nozzle.
Also, you may want to look into getting a HUGE compressor tank (repurposed LPG or NG tank or even an actual compressor tank)... It should make a difference to the compressor head (it will most likely run for a long while to pressurize the whole tank but at least you will have enough air to get you through at least a single plasma cutting project...

I'm currently working on my first hydro project as well. Some numbers: Cross flow with 20 l/s and 21-25m head. Plus 1.7 million Liters of storage with a shallow depth of 3 meters. How much the level of the pond can change is still to be determined. :)
The idea is to use a CVT at the output of the crossflow going into a ~500 kg flywheel which's RPM gets modulated by a simple electromechanical sensor which will open/close the valve by electromagnets.
So the valve is basically floating between two electro magnets which's fields get increased/decrease by the RPM of the flywheel.
The output of the flywheel gets fed over another CVT into an regular grid generator with an exiter winding. The RPM of the generator will be measured by a zero crossing sensor on the output side and the spring pressure of the CVT will be adjusted to compensate for any fluctuations.

Kris, you MUST wear safety glasses if you are going to stick your head in close. A hot speck of metal will have no trouble melting your squishy eyeballs. You’re upping your game, and now PPE is more important than ever. We want to around to fulfill your passions.

Great videos. Have enjoyed. From my off-grid homestead in The Payette National Forest. Semper Fi. Just starting in micro hydro and have learned a lot.

That moving plate was a scream here .... It's a thing of pre planing and well organizing to work such kind of machinery off grid, but I suppose it's much more satisfying compared to simply plugging all in and cut away. Great achievement! Thanks for sharing.

I think I've seen that thing over at Matt from Urchfab, he does really great brackets on it!
A nice feature is a slot cut in where to have a bend, it can be bent over nice and welded up, looks very professional and is very sturdy!
Great deal on this machine, will make your life much easier...
    Thx for showing!

A dream come true. The marvels of modern engineering. But for my old brain that can't manage an iphone, I'd be buggered. You have gone from primitive building construction to cutting edge technology. Excuse the pun. On a personal note Kris. Do you have an engineering background? I remember from one of your earlier videos you saying that you worked on lift installation. I love your videos and I wish you success in your new venture. Keep em coming.

Excellent acquisition to the workshop Kris, slowly but surely you are building your dream.
I don't know if you over there use 45kg gas bottles?
Where I live in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia our town doesn't have grid gas so if we want to use gas we get it in 45kg bottles if you do sometimes you can find them around the place or possibly buy them from the company who delivers the gas to your property.
One of those would make a perfect second tank for your air compressor so if you charge up the primary and the secondary it would give you more time or even allow the air compressor to keep building up pressure (maybe a one way valve between primary and secondary tank?)
It would be a lot cheaper doing this than getting a bigger compressor and probably better on your pressant power production

Nice. You are a great craftsman. And you know what is so cool about this? You're doing it, in a shop you made, on solar you installed....In a field. :D Spectacular.

One other thought, I don't know how much welding you are planning for the new hydroelectric turbines, but I think this is useful either way. I would hit a junkyard and find the thickest sheet of steel that would fit on my plasma table. Alternately, multiple plates the exact same size could work well. Use the plasma cutter to make yourself a fixture table. I don't do a great deal of welding, I don't like the process. Nonetheless, I have bought one of these fixture tables, their utility cannot be overstated. It's fantastic not needing to use a tape measure or a square to know that you are perfectly on size and dead nuts square. I have even found it useful for woodworking. They really screw you on the small things, pins and clamps. It is very easy to turn your own pins on the lathe and there are many DIY designs for modifying otherwise inexpensive clamps to be excellent fixture clamps. If you want to look at some reference material, rhino cart and fireball tool both offer variations. This is a good place to get design ideas for fixture accessories, a lot of very brilliant things have been created in just the past few years. Having your own plasma table is like a license to print your own tools.

Is that building in Ross on wye...?
I could swear i saw it yesterday.
The reason being was that there was a factory in cape town called Xactics. But were a plastic injection moulding company.

Very interesting machine. I get a lot of parts water jet cut, but this look pretty accurate. I’m using up to 20 mm plate so I’m wondering how well the vertical cut face would be maintained with plates of that thickness.
    Food for thought I think.

Extreme dream of mine to have something like that in a workshop , thats where technology is really outstanding. Your lucky to live in a country where you can get a range of quality tools and equipment. Where I am it's basically all chinese junk, anyways to old to worry now, I'll just get the enjoyment watching you use it all.

Try adding an accumulator to the plasma table. The compressor fills the accumulator and the accumulator feeds the plasma smooth air, no interruptions.
