Totally agree. The Pixel 5 was and still is my favourite Pixel. People really do get sucked into "bigger is always better". The 5 was the perfect size which makes me excited to see a similar form factor for the 8.

I have owned every single Pixel in XL mode ( except for the five because that was one size and also not the fold). I am currently on a pixel 8Pro and I cannot imagine using any other. When smartphones became a thing my first smartphone (not phone, too many Nokia and Sony Ericsson's to mention😂), was a galaxy from Samsung and I stuck with them until galaxy 5. At which point I discovered a whole world of no bloatware in the Nexus 5. It has been a Google journey ever since with absolutely no regrets. Underrated gems. (All typed with Google Voice transcriber on Gboard).😊

I think this is rather a confused video, designed to slate most Pixels up until the modern day ones - simply to fit the video's narrative. They have iteratively improved.
And the commentary about the fold relative to Samsung is bizarre.

    • @xenofastiq

    • @ChristopherPhillips

@@xenofastiq Yet the presenter was pessimistic about every device bar after the 6, and including the Fold. I just don't believe he had spent time with these devices nor understood what they were like at the time. The 5, for example, was a very decent Pixel, one of the best. The 6 was very buggy (no mention) the Fold, he criticisms are as if he didn't really use the device (more than a cursory look at it). Its a poor overview.

    • @xenofastiq
      @xenofastiq 7 місяців тому +1

@@ChristopherPhillips I wouldn't necessarily call the 5 one of the best. It was nice, sure, but having a midrange chip really made it suffer for me. Going from a Pixel 4XL to a 5 was a mistake tbh. Not because of the phone size, but because performance was just sub par. I got notice the 5 struggle quite a lot in keeping that 90fps consistently through apps and the system, unlike the 4, and every other high refresh rate Pixel I've had.
I'd say the only reason that maybe the 6 felt like more of an upgrade over the 5 vs other generations was simply due to the Pixel 5 just being a weird in between of mid-range while also trying to be a flagship. The Pixel 4a5G, Pixel 5, and even the 5a were pretty much almost the same phone, minus the refresh rate. It almost made no sense to pay a couple hundred extra to go for the 5 when you'd have almost the full same experience by going with a 4a5G or the 5a.

    • @ChristopherPhillips
      @ChristopherPhillips 7 місяців тому +3

@@xenofastiq I just remember the 4 battery life was so bad, and the lack of finger print sensor was incredibly annoying.
I'm using my 5 in the interim of transition from 7 to 8 and I realised how much I love it. (Again refresh rate no issue for me, but again, that's just me).
But horses for courses of course! :)
Anyway this isn't the thrust of my point, it's the video itself, it doesn't seem like he has a proper understanding of the pixel range.

It's sad how the Pixel 4 is looked on with such disdain. Yes the battery was crap even at launch, and Soli was basically abandoned - but props to Google for trying something new and different. Everything else was just fantastic, face unlock (even in pitch black) was just so great and I miss it a lot on the Pixel 8, the size of the phone itself was perfect, and the screen for its time was really good too. Pixel's greatest edge from the rest of the smartphone competition is it's software. Why? The trickery and witchcraft hacks the hardware's limits till it's last performance. Other than that, the smartphone brings it to long-term purposes due to softwares updates and signature feature drops.
And the icing on top of the cake, the camera. It's way beyond the competition always.

My smart phone journey started with the Samsung Galaxy S in 2010. Next was the Siii. Then I went to the Moto X Pure, which was a Google device rolling out just as Google sold off Moto to Lenovo. After Google collected all the Motorola patents. Next was the Pixel 4a5G, which I wanted to replace once the security support ended. Considered getting the 7a, but after 7 year support was included with the Pixel 8, I went that direction. Plus, if you ordered it pre-launch, they tossed in 2023 Pixel Pro earbuds. BTW, I like the phone.

I used pixel 1 and pixel 3 and they were awesome, only reason why I switched to Iphone was the quality in pixel 3 was not as good as pixel 1 so i thought they were going downhill. Currently I have Iphone 14 pro and was very tempted to switch but I don't like to upgrade for at least 3 years so I will definitely wait till pixel 10. Hopefully by that time, every single will be perfect. I am glad their screen is better now their transition to tsmc in couple of years with ultra sonic fingerprint, hopefully ufs 4.1 storage and finally catching up to apple in video recording will make it a perfect and no brainer switch for me.

I'm always coming back to the Pixel. I don't upgrade my phone very often, but I had Samsung, Sony and Google phones. Galaxy S2, Nexus 4, Xperia Z5 compact, Pixel 2, and now Pixel 6 Pro. In terms of experience I had at the time, I'd rank them like this:
    1. Pixel 2 (best overall package, including outstanding camera at the time)
    2. Nexus 4 (crazy performance at the time, great form factor, but camera sucked)
    3. Pixel 6 Pro (great overall package, but a little to large for my taste, and buggy experience in the early weeks/months)
    4. Galaxy S2 (awesome specs at the time, great performance, but hideous software with the TouchWiz Android back then)
    5. Z5 compact (awesome form factor, good hardware, good pictures in the beginning but went downhill over time, software was not as good as expected)
My next phone will probably be a Pixel 9 Pro, the small variant. I like compact flagships, and I want long software support.

I think the Pixel 5 gets treated so much worse than it actually was. Despite the mid-range processor, the phone felt natural and balanced in nearly every way. It was a great size and felt just right for one-handed use. Because of its unique coating, it was one of the last phones in recent memory that actually felt great to use without a case. In practicality, glass isn't that great a material to put on the back of your phone, and it was kind of a bummer when Google went back to the glass-on-glass sandwich design for the Pixel 6. The Pixel 5 was such a cool phone, even if it was out of step with the rest of the series.

6:53 Pixels had slowdowns, bugs, overheating, fingerprint not working right, etc. at the start. With the android 13 and 14 updates, these were fixed.
You also missed the pixel 6a was the first A series to pack a flagship level chip that too at its $300 - $350 global price tag. At that price, the pixel blew the competition out of the water. Something the 7a still hasn't achieved, despite being a year old. Pixel 7a was going for $150 to $200 more and not offering much more does not make it that great.
Having a flagship level chip means a phone will last a long time since the SOC can handle future updates with ease.
And lastly, only xiaomi beats google in ease of custom rom installation. However, being 2nd place is not a bad place to be. Certainly better than samsung and others. So, if you wanted to, you could install a custom rom and get 10 years of support.

I think the luxury of OnePlus cheaper offerings has kept me away, adding to that the another luxury is having warp charge. I think the charging speeds on Pixel, Samsung and Apple are very poor given what other manufacturers mainly Chinese phones, have 100 % battery charge in 40mins. My partner just got the pixel 8 pro. They could probably make the 8 and on look cooler but they'd need to make the visor a different color or material. The 2tone is iconic Google and I think now all they care about is bland bland design

I was a huge Nexus fan. Great simple phones with average specs for a good price. But Pixels are mediocre phones with laughable specs for a super high premium price. No, there is no way to understand it. Esthetics are great but insides are not. I agree with AP, Pixels are exceptionally good phones... But extremely overpriced. Pixel 8 Pro with second-class specs can't be priced as much better high-end phones.

The truth is the average person doesn't care about the "specs" of your phone. That's why iPhones sell so well

Talking about misunderstanding...stop the non sense of the premium BS.
Thanks to that B's is why we have phones that cost almost 2K.
    Seriously, stop that.

Honestly, pixel is just another smartphone brand now. It is nothing special.
The old selling point of the Nexus was that it was cheap and clean and had no bloat so it ran smooth. It was appealing because a lot of phones back then were bad or mediocre. The tech wasn’t mature enough yet. But the tech IS mature enough now. Stuff like HDR+ and night mode which once were game-changers, are no longer things that gcam has a monopoly on, and a lot of the design paradigm for phone UI has shifted towards a more minimalist and clean feel, so things are way less bloated than they used to be.

But the problem with Nexus was that they weren't Google phones. They were made by other OEMs. So if you want a cheaper alternative with no bloat, you have to pressure OEMs to make those alternatives now, otherwise oh well. Pixels are just another brand now, but that was the point. They wanted to make their own brand instead of just be partnering with OEMs to make Nexus devices.
