25:58 I don't think I'm giving spoilers away when I say that there was actually a bit of a backlash against Martha Jones when these episodes first aired. The reason was a whole bunch of new fans who didn't understand 'the cycle' yet. Companions and Doctors don't stick around for the whole series. You have to accept that if you want to keep watching. Fans invested in the Doctor/Rose love story weren't ready for a new Companion yet. Huh. I guess that does make sense. I've always been entirely bewildered as to why people don't like a Martha, but that makes sense. I mean, it's a bad reason, but it makes a kind of sense.

Rose had been praised because she was quite a different and unique type of companion for Doctor Who - probably the closest one to her in Classic was the last companion, Ace. So glad you got here at last. There's an improvised one-person play running in London at the moment called 'White Rabbit, Red Rabbit'. They have a different celebrity actor to play the role every night: he/she doesn't see the script until they open an envelope. A couple of weeks ago I went to see Freema play the part - could have picked Catherine Tate the night before, but no, I went to see Freema, because I loved Martha so much. Sorry, but I thought she was a breath of fresh air after Rose. Up close and fairly personal in this little theatre, Freema was a blast - doesn't look changed at all, all smiles and running round the stage, fantastic rapport with the audience. I had a great time. But one thing brought home to me the passage of wibbly-wobbly time. At one point the writer of the play asks the actor to describe herself. Freema said she was five foot whatever, black . . . and 45. It shook me for a moment, as in my mind she's frozen here in this moment with the Doctor, mid-twenties as she was. 45. Makes you think. Anyway, Martha is wonderful. Hope you feel the same!
I also was shocked about hearing that about another companion that i absolutely loved. But it seems some people just hate it when a companion is as good as the Doctor or sometimes even outshines him. And the more often that happens the more they hate her.
I think almost everyone likes Martha now. I was really into both Doctor Who and the Doctor Who fan communicat at this time and I can tell you there were three main reasons different groups of fans hated her: 1. There were the classic Doctor Who fans who had really hated that the first NuWho companion was romantic with the Doctor. There was this big thing in the classic community that the Doctor should NEVER be romantic with anyone and ESPECIALLY not the companion. There was even a series of 7th Dcotor books (often written by people like RTD and Moffat who had been fans of Doctor Who as a kid and grew up to be writers and in those it was established that Timelords reproduced asexually through cloning. So those guys really hated that there was now a second companion where they seemed to establish another romantic subplot right from her first episode. 2. There were the new fans of NuWho (especially focussed around Tumblr) where 10+Rose was their OTP and they were ALWAYS going to hate whoever came after Rose. 3. People who were disappointed that they went with what seemed just like Rose 2.0. A young woman from modern day earth with a family back home who joined the doctor to see the wonders of the universe. A lot of them were old series fans who had been used to a much more diverse set of companion types than NuWho does. Under RTD and Moffat Doctor Who has been kind of trapped in this formula of "single woman, usually young, from modern day Earth who might have a bit of a thing for the Doctor" for the companion. A lot of people were hoping that after they did that with the first companion, that the second companion would be radically different. In the classic era the companions often came from the past or the future, they were sometimes aliens, other Timelords, robots, male, female, young, old....some people were just disappointed that Martha just seemed like another Rose. Oh, and also: 4. Racists. Their big argument was "You can't have a black companion, what happens when he takes her back in time?"
It bums me out how Doctor Who fans can't respect the no spoilers policy. You'd think if there's one thing we learned from time travel, it's that spoilers are bad.
In the past I, a couple of times, posted spoilers on other sites, but very quickly caught on not to. Alexa Chapman has big probs with this despite always saying not to. It’s a real shame.
Yeah, it sucks. Okay, I get the urge. I would love to write something that would be a spoiler multiple times, but I'm trying hard not to. Eventually we will reach it, and without spoilers, the reaction will be even better.
The Doctor's companions are consistently and anonymously earths greatest heros. I was heart broken when ee lost Chris, I died when we lost Rose, but... No question in my heart, Martha is my favorite companion. She is the realest, most badass human. They're quite literally ALL great but Martha is the best IMO.
Martha's sister is played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who plays Judge Ravonna Renslayer in Loki, and was in Black Mirror's San Junipero. Martha's mum / Lady Danbury is played by Adjoa Andoh.
Oh- you are going to have such fun with Martha! There are some great episodes upcoming. Rose is never forgotten- but Martha is a great companion too. She's often underrated because she followed Rose, and people were still missing her....
Which I don't understand. I like Martha much more than Rose. Rose is actually my second least favorite companion (and my least favorite was just because the actress was so wishy-washy about staying or going that she had like 4 episodes where it made sense for her exit to happen.)
Hooray series 3 is here with the beautiful Martha Jones. Some of my very favorite episodes are in this series, especially in the second half. Am so looking forward to these new reactions. Let's go!
This was the series I went from a viewer to a full on fan of the show & said “no matter where this program turns, I will continue to watch” - Martha is such a breath of fresh air & this season is definitely a step up that ramps up especially in the second half & into series 4 👍
And now you've met Martha Jones, the Doctor's doctor! I love her ♥ Also, fun behind-the-scenes fact about this episode: you know how David Tennant is Scottish, and just putting on an English accent for this role? So this entire episode started as a joke, to mess with David, because saying the "oo" sound in an English accent is difficult for him. So they decided to have him say "a Judoon platoon on the moon" just to screw with him 😂
Is there ever a time people don't like a companion? Sure. It's all up to taste and how people handle change. For instance, Donna was hated in the Christmas Bride because she was annoying and over the top. Martha was initially hated because she wasn't Rose and no one wanted her being all lovey-dovey about the Doctor after Rose. Same thing with the Doctor. People enjoy certain actors and not others. And scripts have a lot to do with it. The actors are always good, but sometimes, they just get dealth a terrible script hand. Love your reactions! KEEP IT UP GIRL!
Glad you didn't get spoilered. I think the whole comment section wanted to say hey Martha at camera warf. Love that they're a platoon of judoon on the moon just so David Tennant has a hard time hiding his Scottish accent 😂
People have said "I could do without" about every companion, with different degrees of popularity. It's what the Doctor and companion have in common, differing levels of acceptance when they change.
@smashbrandiscootch719 way more lookable than the nerd and red girl. Don’t care about their relationship. Even if they are related to doctors loved one. Wink Wink Nudge Nudge. Spoilers Sweetie
@@transientanus I have my own opinions about companion that many like, but I will not share them, as they would include spoilers. So kindly whine about Martha somewhere else, as I restrain my opinions about future.
I'll be respectful of the "no spoilers" policy, except to say I can't wait to see what you think of this season after we get to the end. (I can't say more than that, really). Sooooooo many good eps this season, and what is widely touted as the best episode of New Who. I'm looking forward to rewatching it all with you. Footnote: the actor that plays Martha's mum has already been in an episode, she's one of the cats who's treating the Face of Boe in _New Earth_
The UK acting pool is sort of like the Canadian acting pool, where there is a limited pool of actors who appear in nearly every production and may re-appear as different characters.
I think the showrunners were very smart to have the Christmas special with Donna be what it was, because originally some people didn't like Martha for being Rose's "replacement" but having a one-off, maybe-companion in-between helped not make that sentiment as prevalent as it could have been.
Thank you so much for the effort you put into these. Your journey with Dr. Who has been magical. Without spoiling, this is my personal favorite season of Dr. Who. It’s not perfect, no season is I think, but it has such creative stories and tries so many new things. Not everyone likes this season but given your personality and the questions like to ask when it comes to narratives, I think you’ll be in for a good time.
Unlike Series 1 and 2, there were no weak episodes this series. While episode 2 (which Angela has probably already watched) wasn't my favorite, it definitely was better than "Fear Her," "Love and Monsters," "Idiot's Lantern," and the Slitheen episodes of Series 1.
It's implied in this episode that Martha's family is a little dysfunctional, so the Doctor does provide a bit of an escape. It's pretty common in Doctor Who's history as a show to recast actors from past episodes. On example was Michael Sheard (Admiral Ozzel in the Empire Strikes Back), who appeared six times during its "classic" run.
THAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH DOCTOR WHO, everybody leaves eventually 😭 and it's so UNFAIR. By the way, Freema Agyeman, Gugu Mbatha-Raw AND Adjoa Andoh in the same family? We didn't know how lucky we were back then.
And Rory. Martha, Bill, Clara, and Rory are the most underrated companion. And Liz Shaw. Rory, Bill, Martha, Clara, Rory, and Liz Shaw are the most underrated companion.
Lady Danberry was in previous episode of Doctor Who. It was New Earth, she played the main Cat Nurse. Like many British shows and older US shows the same person plays different characters.
This episode was filmed in my university. The scene where the doctor and Martha are hiding by the plant watching the judoon waslk into the hospital reception is actually the reception of my university library. Its really cool and weird as a whovian to walk into it everyday. 💛
I love when we had the same reaction, for different reasons. For me, when I started watching Bridgerton for the first time, I'm like "Is that Martha jones' mom?! Oh my gosh!"
This wasn’t the first time an actor playing a minor role ended up being casted as another character in a major role. It happened in Classic Who, Colin Baker played a minor role and ended up eventually being casted as the 6th Doctor. Actors playing a minor role and coming back as new characters in major roles will happen again in modern Who but I will not spoil. I can’t wait to see those reactions when that time comes.
The Doctor acknowledging Rose in this episode was a big deal. With original Who the tradition was a new companion would arrive, and it was like the previous one had never existed.
God, I just love this episode. I don’t think I can honestly say it’s the best of all time, but it might be my personal favorite. Such a great start to the season and it just nails all the fundamentals of a good Doctor Who episode. So many great pieces that all come together perfectly. Phenomenal.
I spent a year (oh 2 years) going to Polytechnic with the actress who played Martha's mum... Its was a few years ago. She used to play the Saxophone or Cello or something in a tunnel.
One of the most underrated and underappreciated season openers in all of Doctor Who, in my opinion. Fun, action packed, creepy, a FANTASTIC introduction to Martha (who has quite possibly the most beautiful companion theme in the entire show), David at his usual best, amazing monsters, just an all-round great episode. Just you wait for some of the episodes this season though. Oooh, you've got a lot of top tier adventures to look forward to...
Murray Gold did a fantastic job with so much of the Doctor Who music. Personally, Clara's theme is my favorite (even though a different companion is my favorite).
Fun fact: Martha's sister, Tish, is played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who played Judge Renslayer in Season 1 of Loki. I've seen this episode many times, but a new thought occurred to me while watching this video: If the Doctor has two hearts, it stands to reason that he may have two entire cardiovascular systems. Otherwise having two hearts doesn't make a lot of sense. So maybe that's how he survived: The Plasmavore only drained one system, not both. I don't think there is a companion, at least in modern Who, that people generally didn't like (there were one or two in Classic Who). Polarizing could be applied, however, to some. I'm thinking mostly of Clara, whom people either really love or didn't care for as her character developed (I won't get into spoilers). Personally, she's my second favorite after Amy.
Yay. Was waiting for today for S3 reactions to start. This will be a good one :) Thanks for the reaction as always, especially today I sure needed something to make me smile and forget the crap going on in my world right now.
I love your DW reaction videos! It's great to have them back! I love that you love Martha, Martha is brilliant ❤ I love all the companions from the RTD era, Rose may be my favourite, but all of them are awesome ❤❤ Can't wait for the next episode.
HELP the interlude about Freema playing both characters took me out omg you getting teary seeing Martha entering the TARDIS for the first time...same. Every time it happens. God I love this show
I love that, if you think about it, the explanation at 23:49 makes total sense. He's not actively changing the past by showing off, so he can get away with it.
The companions HAVE to be broadly appealing in some way, or people aren't gonna watch the show! And I don't think there's a single companion actor who wasn't invested in doing their best. The main thing people had against Martha was "she's not Rose", which (as you saw) happens a little in universe too, from the Doctor's stern "you're not replacing her!!". She's not getting to start with a completely clean slate. (And some viewers were just racist, of course.) And it's interesting to compare them, naturally, but it doesn't need to be a competition. Gosh, the Doctor is so cute in this episode though. I feel like Tennant has really hit his stride at this point. It's exciting to see a proper season opener with him fully comfortable in the role. AND BLUE SUIT!! I adore the blue suit, I'm so happy to see it finally appear! Oh, and cast! Nick Briggs as "Judoon voices". In addition to Dalek and Cybermen, that's his third "voicing an entire alien species" role. (I also mistakenly said he voiced K9 in an earlier episode, don't know what I was thinking at the time. That's been John Leeson ALMOST exclusively, since K9 first appeared in 1977! Including in over 50 audios dramas, which he's still actively doing.) It's interesting, looking at various eras of Doctor Who and the importance of families. It's not, like, the norm - if you can go anywhere in space and time, of course you don't want to spend that much time at home, narratively speaking! But it seems very important to Russell T Davies as a showrunner, and I love it. Makes it feel grounded, and for the companions to have connections.
Martha isn't the first case of a minor characters actor getting an important role later. In fact, one of the doctors in the classic show had a minor role on the show several years before being cast as the doctor. If we include the expanded universe, Tennant himself appeared in several audio dramas in the early 2000s before he was cast as the doctor.
The Doctor getting a new companion is always a tricky time for fans because it changes the dynamic just as much as us getting a new Doctor. Season 3 has some of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who.
Tears to my eyes everytime, brilliant editing, so easy to follow. Space rino. The judoon platoon on the moon. Space police. Looking forward to your next reaction.

It's AJJ-EMAN. From her own lips!
I don't get that there are people who dislike Martha. She is absolutely and positively brilliant.
The problem with such absolute brilliance is that some, even bright, people (in the audience) may feel small and dark alongside.
There are some people who dislike (REDACTED).🤓
I also was shocked about hearing that about another companion that i absolutely loved. But it seems some people just hate it when a companion is as good as the Doctor or sometimes even outshines him. And the more often that happens the more they hate her.
I adore Martha (better than Rose), but... [don't wanna spoil anything]
I think almost everyone likes Martha now. I was really into both Doctor Who and the Doctor Who fan communicat at this time and I can tell you there were three main reasons different groups of fans hated her:
Oh, and also:
It's ridiculous, I've read a few comments, and people are talking about things that will happen with this companion and naming future companions.
@ I did it myself a while ago a couple of times on other reactors, but quickly realised my mistake, never done it since.
Yeah, it sucks.
Okay, I get the urge. I would love to write something that would be a spoiler multiple times, but I'm trying hard not to.
Eventually we will reach it, and without spoilers, the reaction will be even better.
@Temeraire101 it's easily done, you get into a debate or just want to share your excitement about something that's going to happen.
Mr stoker being killed by the blood sicker haha
I have seen this episode 5 or 6 times and never made that connection! I feel so thick right now lol!
Glad somebody got that other than me 😁
The irony 😅
Love it. I always giggle at that.
Vampires, Mr Stoker..... First time I had registered. Nice one!
This is one of my favourite series of Doctor Who! I hope you love it too. Some amazing stories.
It's been 20 years u never get over rose lol I rewatched doctor who 3 times cried harder each time 🤣
The Doctor's companions are consistently and anonymously earths greatest heros. I was heart broken when ee lost Chris, I died when we lost Rose, but... No question in my heart, Martha is my favorite companion. She is the realest, most badass human. They're quite literally ALL great but Martha is the best IMO.
This series has some absolute bangers I can't wait
yupp, gooood season
Martha's sister is played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who plays Judge Ravonna Renslayer in Loki, and was in Black Mirror's San Junipero.
Martha's mum / Lady Danbury is played by Adjoa Andoh.
Both Jones sisters play second characters in the universe
OMG I NEVER REALIZED SHE WAS JUDGE RENSLAYER
I LOVE Gugu, she's a great actress ❤
THAT'S where I saw her from!
Gugu was also ‘Piranha’ in the wonderful ’Lost In Austen’.
Let's go!
welcome to the era of the most underrated companion, I can't wait for you to see the rest of Martha's story!
I LOVE Martha Jones. She's always been my favorite companion. So excited to see how you like her run.
A hospital on the Moon, talking space rhinos, and a blood sucking old dear in a dressing gown… with a straw, God I love this show 😆
People have said "I could do without" about every companion, with different degrees of popularity. It's what the Doctor and companion have in common, differing levels of acceptance when they change.
Some definitely more than others, though. Including one that was almost universally hated but somewhat redeemed herself in nuwho.
Another great reaction, and I love that Xander is still committed to the brain chip joke, 2 seasons later.
You're not like a Whovian, you are a Whovian.
Except one who is apparently skipping Torchwood and as such isn't going to get the whole story.
@@transientanustorchwood is perfectly skipable

Oh Martha, I love her character arc. Out of Tennant era, I think she is my favored.
ye she's capable, without spoilers
true. I think she is only rivaled by Clara.
She is literally the WORST companion. All she does is whine and pine after the doctor who clearly has no interest.
Ooh Martha Jones 😊
I'll be respectful of the "no spoilers" policy, except to say I can't wait to see what you think of this season after we get to the end. (I can't say more than that, really). Sooooooo many good eps this season, and what is widely touted as the best episode of New Who. I'm looking forward to rewatching it all with you.
Footnote: the actor that plays Martha's mum has already been in an episode, she's one of the cats who's treating the Face of Boe in _New Earth_
Yep. Hope she can learn to not blink cause there's soooo much good stuff coming.
@@ryanakers1372 I mean, c'mon ... respect the no spoilers policy. Even if it is out of context.
The UK acting pool is sort of like the Canadian acting pool, where there is a limited pool of actors who appear in nearly every production and may re-appear as different characters.
I know the episode you mean. It's not best. The Doctor is hardly in it. The most overrated perhaps.
He starts coordinating his shoes with which suit he wears from here irrc; red for the blue suit, white/beige for the brown suit.
you know you have become a whovian, when you get excited to see your second companions' reaction to the inside of the TARDIS, another amazing video!!!
Love Martha Jones so much. Underrated… some of the best episodes on the way.
@@fayesouthall6604 Better than Rose IMO.
Great reaction Angela 🖖
Hi Xander, great edit
You two make a fantastic team 🌹☮️
I love how emotional you get, because that's all of us. There are some fantastic episodes coming, and I can't wait to watch with you.
THAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH DOCTOR WHO, everybody leaves eventually 😭 and it's so UNFAIR. By the way, Freema Agyeman, Gugu Mbatha-Raw AND Adjoa Andoh in the same family? We didn't know how lucky we were back then.
the good thing is, we can rewatch 😂
Gugu is just glorious 😊
But Reggie Yates and Trevor Laird were the ones I’d heard of in 2007! Funny how things go…
It's also the beauty of it. Life is fleeting, and so are Doctors and Companions. Cherish them.
Martha is honestly the most underrated companion.
Agree. Same with Bill. Cheers....
Martha and Clara
And Rory. Martha, Bill, Clara, and Rory are the most underrated companion.
And Liz Shaw. Rory, Bill, Martha, Clara, Rory, and Liz Shaw are the most underrated companion.

@@concettasorvillo3719
"Clara underrated? Where?"
well, by you for example ^^ and no you are not the only one.
As with The doctor, people have different favourite companions. Some more loved than others. Personally, Martha is definitely in my top 3.
Martha's theme by Murray Gold is so beautiful.
When you called her a vampire I realized the head doctors name was an easter egg! Brian Stoker (Bram Stoker)
I love when we had the same reaction, for different reasons.
For me, when I started watching Bridgerton for the first time, I'm like "Is that Martha jones' mom?! Oh my gosh!"
Yay, and you've reached my favourite companion of the new series!
Season threeeeeeee!!! 😃👏👏👏
Get ready, Angela. You’re in for a ride!
Also Lalla Ward playing Princess Astra then Romana.
That actress for Martha’s mom was also in one of the Witcher seasons, love her! She looks and talks just like my nana who passed, uncanny resemblance
The Doctor acknowledging Rose in this episode was a big deal. With original Who the tradition was a new companion would arrive, and it was like the previous one had never existed.
Not true. Past companions got name-dropped quite a bit.
God, I just love this episode. I don’t think I can honestly say it’s the best of all time, but it might be my personal favorite. Such a great start to the season and it just nails all the fundamentals of a good Doctor Who episode. So many great pieces that all come together perfectly. Phenomenal.
Martha is one of my all time favorites. She is a great character, and it doesnt hurt that she is absolutely gorgeous.
Season 3 is LOADED with banger episodes. Honestly I always felt like seasons 3-6 were peak Doctor Who.
Marthas sister is played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw who is a very talented british actress and was notably in the Loki tv show !
I absolutely love Martha, and have had a massive crush on Freema since she was in Doctor Who
I always thought of this episode as "Smitten Jones" :)
@@brianhanna3128Or if ur British and old enough to remember Alas Smith and Jones😁
@@Temeraire101 I'm British and I remember the 60s US show Alias Smith & Jones from which Mel & Gryff took the name :)
@ I didn’t know that.👍
I spent a year (oh 2 years) going to Polytechnic with the actress who played Martha's mum...
I met Lady Danberry at my work about a month or 2 ago. She seemed so lovely!
Honestly I think even the companion names are spoilers
Yay. Was waiting for today for S3 reactions to start. This will be a good one :) Thanks for the reaction as always, especially today I sure needed something to make me smile and forget the crap going on in my world right now.
WE'VE FINALLY HIT SEASON 3!
Yes, it is going to keep getting better.
I love your DW reaction videos! It's great to have them back!
I love that you love Martha, Martha is brilliant ❤
I love all the companions from the RTD era, Rose may be my favourite, but all of them are awesome ❤❤
Can't wait for the next episode.
I have to be honest; I think Martha might be my favourite companion and she is certainly underrated.
HELP the interlude about Freema playing both characters took me out
omg you getting teary seeing Martha entering the TARDIS for the first time...same. Every time it happens. God I love this show
The bit I love is the Doctor mouthing "It's bigger on the inside" in the background as Martha says it. :)
I love that, if you think about it, the explanation at 23:49 makes total sense. He's not actively changing the past by showing off, so he can get away with it.
I've felt differently about each companion, but never actively disliked one. They do a great job writing them.
My favorite companion. In my opinion, the most human of all of this era's companions.
My favourite companion of the new era and the best introduction of a new companion.
My gosh, the wait for this next reaction was killing me, I’m so happy it’s here!!
fun fact second doctor companion jamie came up with the alias john smith
Fun Fact: ALAS SMITH & JONES was a British TV series starring Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones. It ran from 1984-1988.
26:00 I can promise you that no there are no "meh" companions. Every one of them is pure gold.
PLO KLO MO SHO DO KO HO LO
Translates into: "Yeah, Doctor who is back. I love these reactions"
I am kinda interested in the idea of a language where there is only one vowel
@mranima748 There are a handful of real languages that have been analysed by some linguists as only having one vowel phoneme!
Including in over 50 audios dramas, which he's still actively doing.)
It's interesting, looking at various eras of Doctor Who and the importance of families.
“Barefoot of the moon” is one of my favorite lines of the series. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
IMO, this season and the next are the best of the entire series.
Tears to my eyes everytime, brilliant editing, so easy to follow. Space rino. The judoon platoon on the moon. Space police. Looking forward to your next reaction.
I've always thought that this season is the best of modern Who - you've got all the best stories to come in the next few weeks!
