It is pretty amusing how James frames software as like being relationships. You broke up with a rich control freak abuser who was taking advantage of you and convinced you that you could have no other friends and had nowhere to go. So when you finally broke up, it was tough at first making the transition away from that. Your new friends/love didn't seem as flashy as your ex and you didn't quite understand them at first. Yet they treated you with respect, and each gave you so much more confidence and fulfillment the more you learn about them. Surprisingly wholesome story framing in the end.
You, my friend, get it. I don't know if you are an open source software person. But this is the exact feeling that us Linux freaks have. Thank you for putting it into words!

Not once, in my 5 years of using Davinci Resolve, have I ever lost anything due to a crash; I even once had Davinci ask me if I wanted to save my work BEFORE it crashed. Like...how?! *After Effects after stubbing its toe:* AA- (ded) *Davinci Resolve after I drag 93 GB of media across a 3-hour timeline:* "Oh dear, it would appear I'm about to close. Would you care to save your work before I do?"
I imagine it has some process in the background that clocks when the main program is in an invalid state and yanks the project file from its memory. This is a complete guess though, I have absolutely no clue how they did it. It's black magic (pun intended).
I've had the same experience with libreoffice. It crashed, or my computer crashed or power outage. Opened it up and there was a good two or three days worth of work gone and then bing, hey um so something happened but you have set to autosave things every few seconds just incase would you like to recover? Why yes I would libreoffice, and boom there's all the stuff I lost, as if the crash never happened.

Your statements on Linux sparking that forgotten passion is SO accurate. I was instantly taken back to my bedroom at like 10 with my first '9X frankenputer, just fucking around and learning something new every day. It was so familiar and yet new with so much passion and just... fucking good community driven ideas and design behind everything that I've been dailying it ever since. And the kicker? Everything is lighter, faster, snappier and often... straight up games just run better thanks to Proton and the community ProtonUp project. It reignited why I got into computers decades ago and why to this day I still work on them. Shits fun.

i like that this tries to talk to the viewer directly i was honestly pretty scared to try linux but it feels pretty approachable right now, thx for that
you can always try in a VM at first, it'll be slower, but good enough to figure things out with zero risk to break anything then you can boot a liveusb to try how it feels to run normally (usb will limit the speed significantly, but it'll be quite OK), most useful in order to figure out if you need extra drivers, and what drivers and then, you can do a full-on install, you can also look into dualbooting, so you can use windows if you need or want, but can use linux for most things (there are some games and proprietary software that don't like to work in wine/proton very well)
For starters I recommend either Linux Mint or Bazzite. They are both popular, widely documented, and include Nvidia drivers preinstalled by default Also, I say for starters, but there's nothing wrong in keeping using the same distro for years. I say this because some people interested in Linux want to use the popular, "real Linux distros" like Arch, but it's completely valid to use "easy" distros like the ones I mentioned. Use what works for you 👍
@jan_harald oh yeah i tried ubuntu in virtualbox and ig technically in WSL, i just never really did anything with it i had no idea about usb till this video, and dualbooting until you just mentioned it. i really want to try both out now
As he said, stick it on a USB key and just try it. Then research dual booting, as jan suggested. It doesn't take a lot to get going. I put it on an old machine for my 70-year-old dad to check email and Facebook and he has no problems with it.
I can recommend CachyOS. Optimized for games and by that, also for programs. I remember, Krita wasn't working well on Windows or Linux Mint, on my laptop, but on CachyOS? It ran smooth. But research yourself and one advice, do not take suggestions from articles, like "10 linux distributions for gaming", they are not so good source of information.
I feel like you sent probably the best message that someone can send to artists: "I have quit Adobe. I used their products for over a decade, but still decided to quit it. It wasn't easy. It took time and effort to re-adjust and learn new tools, but it is possible and the current video is a proof. I also show you that other tools have their own pros and may make your content creation easier in a long run. Switching from toxic software to a better software is hard and requires effort. Will you put this effort towards the better long-term future for yourself or do nothing and stick to the toxic software that requires you to pay money for it to only get worse? It's up to you to decide." Well done, James! You hold my (and I am pretty sure many others') respect for breaking out AND sending the message to tons of artists, proving them that they are capable of doing the same. 👏👏👏

Linux is the best experience I've ever had on a computer. Yes, it takes time to learn, but once you're set up, you gain time every single day with more stability, less annoyances, no planned obsolescence... I've been editing (very basic) videos for 7 years on Linux. Wouldn't change back to Windows or macOS for all the money in the world !
Learning is easy, not being able to run 99% of games with decent performance is a different story though. And more stability is very debatable xD (depending on which distro you're running)
Honestly, everything i want to do on Linux is solved by maybe five minutes of googling. Everything i want to do on Windows takes hours and hours and hours of random attempts. Plus if i buy random old hardware from Ebay it usually requires no setup, just works. In fact, ive basically never had to install drivers or configure my system, at all. Btw i use arch
it's a crazy coincidence how we both decided to try linux mint at the same time. good luck to you man, hope you'll have a better time making content with all the open source software!
linux mint is an amazing choice, no matter if you are newbie or an advanced linux user is easy to understand, equilibrated, incredibly stable, and most compatible with most desktop devices and laptops, as long is X86
that one part hit me too lol I appreciate perfect editing like that I think it feels so perfect because he did it on the composited shot we’d been seeing since the start of the video, the sync with the music track (perfection) and then he continues talking from the very same before/after comparison - also the fact without saying an extra word it shows the results of what he just explained about the node editor
Question though: I’m an iPhone guy and I have a windows OS on my PC, but I’m super unfamiliar with windows, only just dipping my balls in, should I try Linux ? I’ve heard… mixed takes on it, but if I’m already learning a new tech platform, do you think Linux is worth? And if so, how/where would you recommend researching Linux and how to use?
@@Firefight_ If you are just learning to use a PC, definitely try Linux, as now is when it will be easiest to learn. I'm not sure I can give you good sources for research, because a lot of what I use require at least a tiny bit of working familiarity with at the vocabulary of Linux to get the most out of. Linux Mint is often considered (and I agree) to be the easiest starting point, giving an experience very similar to some versions of Windows, with about as good of stability. Its forums are also a useful resource for solving a lot of simple issues.
@Firefight_ depends what you want to use it for. General computing. It works. Even iphone works with it. Just might need an older version of itunes (havent checked in a while but my ipad connects fine). Gaming? Works. If you play mostly single player games, they mostly work. You kight have problems with big competitive games like tarkov, pubg, destiny 2, apex, league because developers refuse to enable anticheat. But other games with anticheat work like squad, insurgency, etc.
@ oooh that’s really convenient because I prefer to play on PS5, and the only games I would play on PC are the single player, high fidelity games like Cyberpunk.
@@Firefight_ for researching Linux use sources like arch wiki and gentoo wiki, they provide a lot of info no matter the distro. Also join distro specific distros and IRC if you have questions that can't be found on Google.

Davinci is wonderful for all kinds of artists. I use it for basic video editing but its also used in massive movies. They know how to make a great software, and its free, thats how they sell their badass hardware to you.
This video perfectly portrays a vibe I caught a long time ago. I'm really excited for the mood shift around Linux and Open Source software we've seen as of late. I think Valve's work on the Steam Deck and Proton is gonna make it easy for large numbers of gamers to move too, which will bring even MORE attention to the scene lol.
The best part about it is that the more people who switch over, the more incentive there is to improve compatability/functionality, which in turn makes it even easier for more people to switch over. Positive feedback loop, baby!
I left windows long ago now. Linux was a experiment or a side project but as I have learned more and more about Microsoft's spying encourage me to try and use Linux more. Before I realized it, it became my primary operating system. I grew up with XP and I have fond memories of it. With 10 I did not have the same joy I had with XP. With Linux, I am having the fun that was lost. All the customization you can do with Linux, particularly visual, Microsoft had a missed opportunity with Windows.
This video is beautiful. Knowing that so many are now switching over to Linux and embraceing some incredibly well-made alternatives to products by these disgustingly greedy corporations just brings a massive smile to my face.
The best thing is, once enough people switch to Linux, companies will follow the money, so we might see Adobe attempting to support Linux in future, which in turn frees more people from Windows, which then allows them to experience the main selling points of less greedy software alternatives, which can make them more willing to switch off of programs such as Adobe too, which then gives more resources to those alternatives, which makes those alternatives even better. We've seen it with Blender, we've seen it with gaming on Linux in a way, open source is simply a positive feedback loop for everybody involved. It got outran by for-profit giants like Microsoft but simply due to its nature it will never fully lose the momentum and I am optimistically believing that long term what benefits the most people is going to win.
I have ditched Google when they forced AI bullcrap down my throat I'll going to ditch Microsoft for that botched attempted at operating system they call windows 11 My days with Microsoft are nearing it's end
5:32 Blender can also do 2D animations like Toon boon / CSP and Animate. Grease pencil awesome, it's vector, so you can change everything when you like it, also procedurally. @@ivoeggetterobotnick3598 There aren't good corporations at the top of tech. You could make the case for hardware manufacturers, because they actually make a physical product that you can own. That's the case for Nvidia, AMD, even Intel (though they've done some shady shit). Other hardware companies like LG and Logitech have begun to move towards a data harvesting model and are no different from Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc. Apple spends extra money to change their hardware away from established standards for no other reason than to fuck you. But if I pay for something, then I consider it to be MINE. Not anyone else's. The vast majority of Big Tech disagrees with that.

I took a vocational class in 2021 for I.T. and the one thing I will always respect is how my instructor would always teach us windows-free paths for the tasks we'd been given. He loved Linux and clearly wanted us to love Linux too.
all devs use linux for deployment/hosting whenever possible. it's free after all but for personal usage, windows remains the most user-friendly and most compatible with... well, everything.
Yeah, CS101 at my college also required you to bring a PC with it (installed or as a USB) and demonstrate to the professor that you knew some basics - grep, find, curl, that sort of thing. He could've just had us take a test, but I think he wanted us to like it (just like your instructor). I'd been using it since I was 10, so I got to show off a bit.

I think VirtualBox is a pretty good introduction to the concept. Always straight forward to setup a environment to test something, or install Windows 98 and XP for my retrogaming needs.. 😁
Instant subscribe. More people need to hear these things, every day until they realize the trap that is complacency in profit driven software isn't meant to benefit them in the slightest. The things you get out of them will never be the goal, making money off of you is. And the more trapped you are, the more you feel like an alternative is inaccessible or too much of a "hassle", the more they can shift their focus to capitalizing off of you, invading your privacy, and using you instead of the other way around, because they know you won't do anything about it.
Super important video. Outside of industry norms, I think the two biggest things holding people back from Linux were gaming, the ease of use / inconvenience which have been addressed in recent years. But the third was almost certainly the lack of support for creative tools for content creation. You've smashed that myth.
Welcome to the Dark Side. I'm a tad older I'd guess, and in my [redacted] years on this planet I've not stopped tinkering with computers. I’ve heard… mixed takes on it, but if I’m already learning a new tech platform, do you think Linux is worth? And if so, how/where would you recommend researching Linux and how to use?
@@Firefight_ Yes, give Mint a try on a USB stick. If you're an Apple/macOS guy in general too, Linux might feel more familiar to you under the hood than Windows does, both are based on BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), Linux uses similar file paths but much simplified compared to BSD (Your installed programs are in /bin/ instead of /usr/pkg/bin compared to BSD). For example, there exists a filesystem you can use that's similar to HFS+ called btrfs (better fs) with built in features to support snapshot restoration like Apple's Time Machine (for example, using the program Timeshift). And the Terminal on Linux uses an upgraded version of the shell used on macOS called sh (Thompson Shell) which on Linux is called bash (Bourne Again Shell) by default that shares all the commands you might have used on macOS. The file paths are also similar, but macOS uses self-contained files for programs called DMG files, but on Linux there are things called AppImage and Flatpak files that function in a very similar way, they allow you to run Linux programs in a way that does not require you to be on a specific distro (distribution) or have specific software library versions (like a program that only works with Python 3-12 if your distro only officially supports Python 3-10). The reason there exists so many different Linux distributions for different purposes is because they pop up in a similar way to 10 people trying to decide on what pizza toppings to order. Instead, every person orders their entirely own pizza with what they want on it, instead of settling for a margherita to try and please everyone. It's just a way to give different types of people different default options for different usecases, such as someone wanting something only for gaming, and someone else wanting something that is ready to be used as a safe webserver, or to be installed on their router to replace the crappy software that comes on it. Compared to Windows though, a lot of distros ship with desktop environments (large collections of software that include things like themes, icons, a settings panel, look and feel of the desktop basically) that are in different ways similar to Windows XP, 7, 10, 11, or even various versions of macOS, including software that mimics Finder. If you don't like Mint, I recommend trying these for on for size: Fedora, or Fedora Atomic (Atomic means that it comes in a full version that completely gets wiped and replaced on updates, of course ignoring your own user files in your /home/ directory, to provide a much more stable and tinker-free environment where you can immediately revert to the last version if something goes wrong) openSUSE Tumbleweed (similar to Fedora, more tinker-heavy and "power user" if you like that sort of thing, but comes with all the newest drivers etc if you have very new hardware, I recommend looking up an installation text or video guide for this) Ubuntu or variants like Kubuntu (a good choice for beginners if you're mainly planning on using Flatpak or Snap, which are like those DMG files on macOS) There are also some convenient programs that help with using commands in the terminal if you need to, for example tldr (tealdeer) is a program that will give you a tldr of how to do common things, which I highly recommend For example: tldr tar ... E[x]tract a (compressed) archive [f]ile into the target directory: tar xf path/to/source.tar[.gz|.bz2|.xz] --directory=path/to/directory ...

But this is the exact feeling that us Linux freaks have.

i was honestly pretty scared to try linux but it feels pretty approachable right now, thx for that
you can always try in a VM at first, it'll be slower, but good enough to figure things out with zero risk to break anything
then you can boot a liveusb to try how it feels to run normally (usb will limit the speed significantly, but it'll be quite OK), most useful in order to figure out if you need extra drivers, and what drivers
and then, you can do a full-on install, you can also look into dualbooting, so you can use windows if you need or want, but can use linux for most things (there are some games and proprietary software that don't like to work in wine/proton very well)
For starters I recommend either Linux Mint or Bazzite. They are both popular, widely documented, and include Nvidia drivers preinstalled by default
Also, I say for starters, but there's nothing wrong in keeping using the same distro for years. I say this because some people interested in Linux want to use the popular, "real Linux distros" like Arch, but it's completely valid to use "easy" distros like the ones I mentioned. Use what works for you 👍
@jan_harald oh yeah i tried ubuntu in virtualbox and ig technically in WSL, i just never really did anything with it
i had no idea about usb till this video, and dualbooting until you just mentioned it. i really want to try both out now
As he said, stick it on a USB key and just try it.
But research yourself and one advice, do not take suggestions from articles, like "10 linux distributions for gaming", they are not so good source of information.
holy shit this may be the most compelling video out there for breaking up with Adobe, thanks James!!!!!!!
It's up to you to decide."
Well done, James! You hold my (and I am pretty sure many others') respect for breaking out AND sending the message to tons of artists, proving them that they are capable of doing the same. 👏👏👏

I've already tried to transition from Windows to Linux, but I kept going back and forth and getting not far at all.
This video has encouraged me to try once again, with a new burning passion!
I have been using linux since around 10 years.
Back when trying to do anything was incredibly hard.
Its not just engineers, but people like you that spread
the word, who made it into what it is today.
Thank You.
Finally. James broke up with the one eyesore that has caused him problems until now.
The moment you described it as "building your own machine, and re-using it," I flipped. This sounds so incredible!!
Da Vinci Reslove was insanely good. Suprisingly helpful and intuitive even to a beginner with tons of features even for free to start.
Welcome to Club Penguin man. Its so much better over here. :) I do all my blender work, godot work, sound design, unreal, etc, all in linux. Welcome bro. Still one of my fav YTers out here.
Edit: yeah im sending this video to everyone. If they wont listen to me, maybe they will to you. You absolutely FUCKING NAILED IT. That part about linux is why ive been on it steady for 5 years now.
Worth the switch.
08:36 this part is extremely inspiring
Reaper sounds like a dream, time to check it out
its so good
It's awesome, and extremely affordable. I dabble in hobby game programming and modding - I switched to reaper (after outgrowing audacity) to help manage and manipulate all my audio.
@@GW-ek8xp It say "fully functional 60-day evaluation" will it stop working after 60 day and you have to pay, or not?
@@Dafafa.511 Nope, it will still works but it will remind you that the trial is over with a popup every time you open it
@@Dafafa.511oh no it's like winrar. yea you're not """supposed""" to use it after the 60 days but all it does is bring you a popup for 5s whenever you start it up until you get an actual license
Possibly one of my favourite James Lee videos! Didn't expect such a simply heartfelt take from Nox and loved it.
Also, Reaper gang rise up!
Amazing video as always
Don't worry, they will at least never take our money, we have pirate ways of getting :V
Windows keeps popping up a message telling me how to "migrate to a new Windows 11 PC" before 10 gets outmoded in October. My tech resolution this year is to finally fully move to Linux. Great video!
02:17 Finally someone mentioned the community and Reactor plugin 🙌
Our hero is switching to Linux.
This is 👏the year 👏of Linux desktop 👏
Question though: I’m an iPhone guy and I have a windows OS on my PC, but I’m super unfamiliar with windows, only just dipping my balls in, should I try Linux ? I’ve heard… mixed takes on it, but if I’m already learning a new tech platform, do you think Linux is worth? And if so, how/where would you recommend researching Linux and how to use?
If you don't like Mint, I recommend trying these for on for size:
Fedora, or Fedora Atomic (Atomic means that it comes in a full version that completely gets wiped and replaced on updates, of course ignoring your own user files in your /home/ directory, to provide a much more stable and tinker-free environment where you can immediately revert to the last version if something goes wrong)
openSUSE Tumbleweed (similar to Fedora, more tinker-heavy and "power user" if you like that sort of thing, but comes with all the newest drivers etc if you have very new hardware, I recommend looking up an installation text or video guide for this)
Ubuntu or variants like Kubuntu (a good choice for beginners if you're mainly planning on using Flatpak or Snap, which are like those DMG files on macOS)
There are also some convenient programs that help with using commands in the terminal if you need to, for example tldr (tealdeer) is a program that will give you a tldr of how to do common things, which I highly recommend
For example:
tldr tar
...
E[x]tract a (compressed) archive [f]ile into the target directory:
tar xf path/to/source.tar[.gz|.bz2|.xz] --directory=path/to/directory
...
@@Firefight_ I'd say if you're unfamiliar with windows, it's an upside for learning linux since they are quite different, and better have a grasp on something while not having any experience based preferences, so I'd say absolutely go for it! I don't have any specific place to send you for your linux journey other than just searching youtube videos about linux. Maybe start by searching linux tutorials, and linux distro guide. Linux is pretty much ready for creative, office and gaming stuff with steam at least.
@Firefight_ go for it, man! Search for tutorials on making ubuntu look like macos if that's what you are familiar with and you'll see it is really similar while having its differences
1 you cannot play games on linux (AAA are scams, not games, cope harder), so I won't be able to play kenshi for example
2 changing to linux deletes all files, and you need to build your PC around linux for it to work properly, and that consts too much monty
3 IDGAF about customization, I'm not using operacringex
4 try pirating on linux, I dare you
This man is a god damn revolutionary leader. Taking massive risks on a platform that largely supports the very software he is rallying against. I can appreciate the struggle of having to re learn software going from maya and photishop to programs like blender and kira have been a massive blow to my ego and mental health but knowing they were so widely supported and used was a massive help! Viva Nox, Viva la tech revolution!
I don't know anything about what this guy does and how he does it.
But that davinci workflow is exactly how audio synthesis has worked since we did it with literal wires and i can't think of anyway that's better to get a flow configured.
You can build a modular synth today and still connect it with patch cables, it's beautiful
Now to get people hooked on VCV Rack. In Linux.
This was amazing! I'm just now learning after effects so not switching to divinchi yet but I'm gonna try reaper over audition. "Sounds" like a love story to me :)
I love how at the alternatives at 8:49 there's "Twitter: Real Life"
Really didnt expect linux to showed up there. Cant wait for a FOSS-ed up James Lee
So happy to see all the Windows users jumping ship. Swapped to Linux last month. Love not having to touch Adobe products. Bless.
Damn that went hard, I was just expecting an animation like the last Adobe one you made but I was delighted to find a really well thought out video on alternatives to annoying software, great video as always!
1:07 "you and me, we're done." breaking up with facebook, a life without adobe
You love to see it. I really hope this video blows up and more people get encouraged to try out all the amazing alternatives to these big software giants that are nowadays all about giving the user zero agency when it come to certain features and somehow legal spyware (*ahem* Windows Recall *ahem*), charging more while offering less, genAI... I could go on. Love your work, James. Thanks for making this video!
I switched to Davinci pretty much right after being able to cancel my Adobe subscription without paying. I LOVE Davinci Resolve so much
every time he uploads my day gets made
We could literally listen you talk for 10 minutes and it wouldn't get boring
I think everyone who is watching this video as a creator is thinking the same thing: "I'm not working hard enough."
Mind. Blown. 😥
Glad to see you’ve become a fellow Mint User!
Let’s hope it’ll continue getting better and that companies will stop having a stick up their ass when it comes to anti-cheat.
As long as they use kernel level Anti-cheat that is a massive threat to privacy, it won't most probably come to linux.
ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
Happy that you finally experimented with linux. It's a huge jump, but it's worth it.
