  • Mail Rail was a narrow gauge underground line that carried mail under London's Streets, connecting main line railway stations with sorting offices, between 1927 and 2003. For its time it was very high-tech, being fully electrified and automated. However the downturn in the amount of mail being carried and the move away from using passenger rail stations to one dedicated mail terminal at Willesden resulted in the mail rail line closing. The line has been preserved as part of the Postal Museum and now visitors can experience a ride on a railway that was never intended to carry passengers.
