This film is a masterpiece and the three main actors deserve no less than an Oscar along with the great director and cinematographer. The film is simply one of the greatest!
i love these stylistic decisions and the camera work- compelling and stunning and communicates so much. I was lucky to see it yesterday in a huge theatre by myself so I could scream all I wanted!
I Had Not Been to a Theater since 2009, and My Wife’s Girlfriend had seen this Film a couple of days ago. AND SAID IT WAS A WILD RIDE! I’m a Big Fan of Body Horror! Then reading some of these Comments I said , this is for Me! And we went to see it! Great camera Work, Great Acting, Brilliant Editing, it was completely OVER THE TOP!! Was way more than I EXPECTED!! Iv seen A lot of Body Horror Films dating back to the70s! And this one Took it to A WHOLE NEW LEVEL! GO SEE IT! Now! And Be Sure To Fasten YOUR SEATBELT! Brilliant Simply Brilliant!!!!
This is why these movies should get recognized in the Academy. I remember how Midsomar had one of the best cinematography that year but never even got a mention because it was in the "horror" genre. I hope they can recognized the art in this film
2nd favorite movie of the year by the absolute slimmest margin. My personal preference goes to Late Night with the Devil but I can't deny the absolute artistry that went into this film. I loved it due in no small part to the camera work (alongside everything else). Stunningly beautiful cinematography. Thank you for the behind the scenes look.
As an avid horror movie fan I loved this movie as I did her earlier one, The Revenge. Both movies portray women differently and both movies are extremely well shot. The reference to movies like The Fly, Basket Case, Fright Night etc are reminiscent in this movie. So naturally the Camera work speaks volumes in The Substance. I’m loving it.
My FAVE movie of 2024. I watched it on my tiny mobile screen first then HAD TO watch it full screen in cinema with my gf. I'm still obsessed with the movie and love to see the BTS. The actors did such a good job
As an indie filmmaker, skin tones are so important to me. If I can get accurate skin tones, that's what I want out of a camera. I would love an ARRI Mini LF. In the meantime, I'm happy with my LUMIX S5ii.
Despite the fact that hollywood awards are arbitrary, I am rooting HARD for this cinematographer to win the 2025 Oscar. This film blew my mind visually in a way I’ve never seen before (and frankly hope to see again). PROPS
a great applause for all the technicians involved in the movie...you nailed it...and a little warning: if you saw the movie in streaming form, go to see it in a cinema with a good sound system, because the music/sound fx is key to the whole experience and you can't get that experience with TV speakers or a small home theather at all...
cinematography was good overall, but why the hell did no one notice that demi moore was still wearing a bath robe in one close up shot of her nude scene?
2:58 „this is how we watch women and Coralie‘s like now I wanna do that back“ !?!? „do that back“ how? by simply reproducing male gaze, in your face pornographic images? somebody pls explain to me how this movie subverts the male gaze.
wouldn't say it's a rip off of Aronofsky's work. There's A TON of references in The Substance and the director did an hommage to many movies and genre. Yes, Requiem For A Dream, but also a lot of Cronenberg's movies, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Brian De Palma to just name a few.
@@ChuckRiseUp perfect response. absolutely clearly shows homage toward requiem for a dream, the fly and the elephant man. but totally brilliant in itself also.
A lot of the camera work from “Requiem” is pulled directly from James Wong Howe’s cinematography in John Frankenheimer’s “Seconds” (1966). Like all mediums, a lot has been done already. It’s a matter of if you can take the old and put a spin on it again to make it fresh again. “The Substance” does this in volumes so well.
More behind the scenes please of the cinematography and the prosthetics! This movie has blown me away in so many ways.
I totally agree with you
Unsure if you saw but MUBI’s channel has a great recent behind the scenes video!
@@l-lelixNebula yes!!!! I’ve been watching :) thank you!
I'm so happy to see ARRI cover the DP's perspective about this phenomenal movie. Everyone did a spectacular job.

This is some of the best cinematography of the last few years. The "look" of this film is stunning.
A the cinema it just was like a visual slap on my brain. Crazy ride. Great cinematography and story.
It's the first time I felt that visual slap after Mad Max Fury Road. Truly distinctive.

This is undeniably the best movie of 2024 for me. Visually, they nailed it. Amazing work by the DP and the Director!!
incredible film and cinematography choices. a MUST to see in theaters!!
the last part of the film wtf lol
Haven't seen it yet
I watched this movie, I love your cinematography..
This movie is fucking mental. With beautiful shots.
i love these stylistic decisions and the camera work- compelling and stunning and communicates so much. I was lucky to see it yesterday in a huge theatre by myself so I could scream all I wanted!
A great film, one of my favourites this year. Superb cinematography, directing, special effects, and acting.
Brilliant work! Every shot is stunning!

movie of the year tbh
The substance is a masterpiece of body horror in its own right.
How you gonna put Late Night with the Devil over The Substance lol

This movies changed my life. I actually love and appreciate all my flaws now. It's never good to chase perfection, it can bring your downfall.
Brilliant movie! Looks fabulous!
That movie is boombastic good!
Should win best cinematography HANDS down
it's the movie to be remembered for decades

I wish we could get a substance set tour especially the apartment ❤️
Amazing! "Beautiful" choices. :)
Best movie all year don’t care what anyone says.
yep!!!
Only soulless wannabe-film critic's says that there was nothing surprising but everyone says it was fully surprising...and it really was!
When the director introduced Benjamin he released the Kracun!
Demi Moore's performance is🔥
This is unbelievably cool!
This movie took me from my hair and head and trow me agains the wall. Were very intense and I love it!!!

No DP worth their salt is using the “out of camera” image. Go down the Steve Yedlin rabbit hole about film vs digital and S35 vs LF.
He did an amazing job, everyone did!!
I've seen a lot of movies this year but NOTHING even comes close to surpassing The Substance. Easy 10/10
How I wish more BTS commentaries or features on The Substance be made and included as Special Features in a physical Blu-ray or 4K release.
Can't wait to watch this on Mubi Halloween night!
Didn't get the chance to see it in theatres.
Amazing movie, you should watch it on a big screen. I had to watch it on my Quest 3, because theaters here don't run The Substance.
I didn't like the movie but I love the cinematography and lighting and colours ;) Well done guys! ;)
Best movie ever

This movie was sooo awesome 🔥 haha 🤣 Quite the cinematic experience!
The cinematography is crazy
So is this a digital camera? The film looks stunning on a big screen.
Hi there, yes the ALEXA Mini LF is a digital camera
Amazing Movie. Outstanding Cinematography.
The Alexas in general are really good on skin
So interesting
Anyone know what mm lens Benjamin used predominately or if he used a few, what they were?
Nice!
2:55 Woah Michael Bay, Okay I can see that fast paced energy of editing that actually works.
Absolutely amazing movie would love to see a sequel in the future
Dennis Quaid nailed it
movie of the year if you ask me.
Arri is the Sue of the camera industry
Not one mention about the lenses used🙄
JD Vance shot "The Substance"?!?
the cinematography in this film demands that you are always watching the screen, which makes the body horror much more effective
You know the movie is good when you searched for extra content in the internet.
we need The Substance 2

Some of the style really reminded me of some Tarantino movies.
I love how when they rip off her poster, half of her eye is still on the board. Nice detail.
best movie in 2024, well at least in my book XD
0 Kubrick reference?

How is this guy talking about the visual aesthetics he created without even mentioning Kubrick? Unreal.
Perfect #JADHUG

Old school body horror, learning from the cults to make something modern. That's how you do it
That is the Joker "smile"

looked like an expensive target commercial
The only good thing about this movie: the photo.
Don’t forget RED Raptor (FX shots) and Red Komodo (body rigs)
very kubrick
This movie lost me at the end.
Great great movie! So sad movies with substance (excuse the pun) are not advertised/marketed the way dumb superhero films are.
The 'Covid Department' was such a fucking joke 😅
👎
Worst ending ever.
Good movie but they ripped off Daron Aronofsky style.
Aronofsky's too busy doing an Elon Musk biodrama pic.
not really
