    Another wonderful video. Thought out this turning, how often did you return to sharpening station? I understand it is a feeling while cutting. I found a 25 lbs chunk of Live Oak in my garage and I think it is time to transform it. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks. I think three times total sharpening. The Live Oak can be beautiful and challenging at he same time. Enjoy and Happy Turning!

    Kent thanks for an excellent video. I also turn bowls and have picked some excellent pointers from your videos. I am concerned about your spraying lacquer at the end of this video. My concerns are twofold. First, you should show that you are wearing a respirator while spraying lacquer. Second, if you spray in your shop the lacquer will continue off-gassing in your shop even after it is dry to the touch. My preference is to spray outside, from the upwind direction and let my items dry outside for the rest of the day, before bringing them inside. Best regards, Joe.

    Kent, outstanding job as always.
    I know you said that you were showing us this this turning in real time but I was wondering how many times you had to step away to sharpen your chisels for this huge bowl. I’m very new to wood turning & follow only a two wood turners religiously. You & Ashley Harwood. I do watch others if recommend or if I see something of interest but you two are my main woodturners. I like that you teach as you turn & don’t blow through at the speed of light.
    I’ve only turned two bowls at this point. Posted both on UA-cam hoping for some feedback + or - . All of my tools & even my lathe are second hand. Jet-1014 miscellaneous chisels not even a full set but just a handful.

    This would not be something I would even attempt until a lot of experience. That interrupted cutting just looks to dangerous! I will leave this to the master and do easy stuff once I rebuild my little 12 x 36 Delta lathe. I am thinking of getting a stronger motor on it, maybe even a variable drive. I heard of one guy using a used walking exercise machine motor. I saw another guy use wood risers even to increase the swing! I will have to make a lot of wood crafts spoons, small bowls, and small items for the home before I can buy a nice lathe like yours. Well, it will be fun trying! LOL

    Hi Kent. I was wondering where you’re located. I live in central Ontario about two hours north of Toronto. The Dutch elm disease went across Canada starting when I was a kid. I recall the city’s crews coming through Toronto cutting down the elms to try and stop the spread. Nowadays you can still see the odd living white elm but most are dead but standing. I actually purchased a live edge board last fall. It’s 2” thick so might be okay for a tray. My original plan was to make cheese boards. Have a good day. Tom

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 роки тому

      Tom, I'm in Florida. This wood is from Illinois. Not sure which elm species this one is. The tree diseases are very sad indeed. I was in Winnipeg a few years ago and they have an avenue filled with a tree they are proud of, it might have been the elms. Not sure. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    I’m thinking of selling some bowls but I live in a very humid climate and I’m worried that it would crack when I send them off to people. Do you have a moisture level that you would recommend I get it to before I sell to reduce the risk of it cracking?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 роки тому

      Yes, stable. The best way to determine is the moisture levels are stable is to weigh the bowl over time. Once the weigh stays the same for over a week, then the moisture is balanced out. Now, if the bowl moves to a drier climate it will continue to lose a bit more weight. This is usually fine. Wood is always changing and moisture is always present in all wood. Tip, use a postal scale and set it to grams for easy recording or bowl weight. Happy Turning!

    Just started watching wood turning videos and I find them fascinating. I've noticed that all the bowls I've seen have thick flat edges along the brim and was wondering if it's possible to have thinner, more tapered and rounded brim edge surfaces? I think that would would look lovely! With that, your knowledge, skill, and finesse are highly admirable.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 роки тому

      Hello Daniele, yes and shape and thickness is possible. However, the thin rimmed bowls are a bit more vulnerable to cracks if they are dropped. Here's a thinner bowl you might like ua-cam.com/video/qCgSw3WVOnY/v-deo.html Happy Turning!

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 роки тому

      Thank you. I believe anything is possible. You will need to be able to apply downward force with your left hand to steady the tool on the tool rest, but the majority of tool movement comes from shifting your body weight, with a little "rudder steering" with your right hand. There are many people with physical limitations that turn very well. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    I'm just getting started in woodturning and I learned a lot from your video. 😊 Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together.
    Quick question, why do you wear gloves? I was told that wearing gloves while turning was really dangerous.
    TIA from Australia. 🇦🇺

      You are so welcome! Shavings and splinters come off hot sometimes and get embedded in the side of my left hand. Not fun. Yes, trim the fingers off and be sure they are tight fitting. And stay on the safe side of the tool rest. ;) Happy Turning!

    excellent tutorial again Kent, leaving some extra wood at the bottom for later shaping the foot was a great tip, I will try that next bowl. Happy New Year.

      Glad to help. That was a game changer for me. Once you do that and plan the foot area, you can create any kind of base you'd like. Happy Turning!

    Had to stop watching when only after 6 minutes in you had already promoted your other videos 4 times. Can't handle 47 minutes of that 🤨

      I'm simply sharing other relevant videos for those that want to learn. Sorry your impatience caused you to miss the valuable gems of information in this video.

      Impatience is the wrong word. It's the annoyance of the self promoting every other minute. I do like the content otherwise but in this instance the annoyance factor won out.

      Kent, I'm thinking this criticism is mostly unique to the critic himself. On the positive side, it saves your regular viewers from hearing endless repititions... and enables your newer viewers to dig deeper by seeking out other relevant videos.
      Thank you!
