I saw Xanadu on Broadway on December 30, 2007 and let me tell you I LOVE IT! This was a BLAST! Yes, it's a parody, but the music is great and the show is fun. Kerry's accent is INTENTIONAL people - she's doing a parody of Olivia Newton-John. It's fun, upbeat, silly and extremely entertaining. I'm a huge fan of Cheyenne's which is mainly why we went, but it would have been great even if he wasn't there. If you have an OPEN mind, go check it out...but be ready to laugh till it hurts!
Um...the show is based on a movie from 1980 and it concerns Greek muses coming "Alive" from a painted wall mural, a roller-rink, and disco music. How can it NOT be a little "Hokey" Besides, who cares about plot when you get Kerry Butler's talent and Cheyenne Jackson's EVERYTHING!!! So Hot!!! :)
just saw the touring company yesterday. very fun show, music is great, and just very sweet. true no real substance or anything to take away but music stuck in your head, but just a fun time at the theatre.
I love this video!! :) my school is going to preform Xanadu in a week in a half and it really is a good show! I am one of the muses and I am going to enjoy every moment of the acting experience!!!
Yea I watched this before I went to see the musical in the theatre and it's really different! It's so much better when you see it on stage on Broadway. I was blown away..it was amazing. I couldn't stop laughing!
Who ARE you people? Kerry Butler is one of the most hilarious, talented, beautiful people in the business. Get over yourselves. ...that being said, both Cheyenne and Kerry are much better than this performance.
If you watch his feet really closely starting at 2:44, you notice that he takes his shoes off and some rollerskates are rolled at him. Obviously they don't do that onstage but this way is easier and faster for the cameras. In my community theater production of this, we have someone under the booth in a trap door that puts his skates on him while he sits down on a bench in the booth. It's a really cool stage trick. I think that's how they do it in their production also.
I saw the play and I thought that was the way it was done but here I can't figure out how he puts them on without bending down to pull them on or tying them for he has to come out and skate and he never once bent down.
@jameala When we did it onstage, the trick in timing it was that the skates were already laced, with the excess tucked behind the tongue rather than tied in a bow. Kick off the shoes, rest the phone on your shoulder, pull the skates on (you don't have to bend down that far since the wheels elevate the shoes) and shazam. The video of our performance is on my page if you wanna see for yourself. ;-)
I was lucky enough to see Xanadu on Broadway.. sort of. I had a stage seat, which meant that I didn't get to see their expressions, but it was really cool because I was on stage!!! But they were AMAZING and if you don't believe me, that's your problem, but seriously, this play is so magical and these actors are so talented, so shut up.
Watch his feet at 2:54...you can see he's starting to taken them off...notice at 3:31 he's got them both on and stands up on both where he grows a good foot. During that whole time the camera doesn't shoot anything below his knees until briefly at 3:37 when he shuts the telephone booth door.
She is a great singer, he is a great singer, but after watching this multiple times I am left with one question: "How do you put roller skates on in a phone both?"
Under the Fortune Palms Some people think meanings are hard to find In the 1980's decade of great emptiness Among the bungalows of Samarkand I stood under the fortune palms And watched for a sign to blow by In the throbbing Santa Ana But all that came my way Wass the remote echo of a woman's voice From down around Xanadu Street Callin gfor her dog to stay --Tom Clark
@jameala At 2:57 you can see him slip off the show and then a stage hand appears before they change camera angles. i cant remember how they did it when I saw them.
I just realized these little cutesy moves they have them doing are very Chenowethian, esp Wicked and some of Charlie Brown. I wonder if some of that physical comedy stuff was directly taken from her.
the only thing I don't like about this is the phone booth. Is there or isn't there supposed to be glass in it? At some points they act like there is but then sonny just puts his arm through it at other points lol
It actually didn't close quickly compared to most shows these days. And I don't know, I'm quite a theatre snob and I adore this show. It was a good take on the film. Made it better actually. It's not perfect but it's entertaining. Also, most musicals from stage or screen when the musical was "in" were quite awful, but most had wonderful talent and good music material. I believe the same can be said for this show. ELO is good stuff. This song is cheesy, sure, but even so... ELO is great.
The show is supposed to be a spoof of the movie her accent is not supposed to be perfect, AKA there is nothing serious about the show, thats why its so great! ;)
you obviously haven't seen the full musical because it's not making fun of the movie, it's making fun of itself. and it did make it better. There's a side plot and really talented actresses and singers added.
@fatheranthony4pope that was the point!! she is a greek muse trying to be in disguise as an australian named kira! its supposed to be a ridiculous accent!
People seriously don't get that she's imitating Olivia and trying to be over the top because that's what the Broadway version was about? It's a tribute and a parody.
I didn't see the show but Cheyenne is taken, girls. He's one of the best looking gay men I've ever seen, along with John Barrowman, another sexy gay and talented entertainer. He fills those shorts quite nicely.
I am sorry. CULT CLASSIC? No. Xanadu was a 1 star movie. If you ever actually had an open mind about seeing this (myopic mortal), you'd understand why it's a hit
Ashley, that is a great note, but that is not how they did it. I wonder if he could either step into those skates (unlikely) or if there was someone in the booth with him who put those skates on him.
I get that it's a parody, and I'm glad that it's a parody (or else it would be terrible), but I can't get into it because it seems so overly smug. Maybe actually seeing the show would change my mind. ^_^
I may be the only person in the world who adores the movie but I do! ONJ, Gene Kelly! Hello! Yes it was hokey but it was great fun and has so much heart. I actually got my niece hooked on it when she was a kid and as an adult she still loves it. I am a huge fan of both Musicals and of Kerry Butler but wow, they totally disrespected the movie making fun of it the way they did. The accent is just horrid and what's with Sonny standing in a phone booth the entire song? Yuck. I think I'll stick with the original. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
2 years later, I see this comment. I’m 16. I first saw Xanadu the MOVIE when I was 5 and have been hooked on it ever since! It is my favorite movie in the whole entire world! I’m not a big fan of the broadway musical version of it. No hate. It just makes me really mad.
I don't care what critics say.. but the movie was just great and is way better than this Broadway show. In addition, The Broadway show does not reflect the movie at all. In fact, it is kind of dumb trying to ridicule the movie.
It is a parody, a total remake of it. It is not supposed to be exactly like the movie. I love the movie but one has to get what this is in order to understand it.
i love this clip but i HATE whoopi's intro. there's nothing "magical" about muses in the greek tradition (which is where our girl is). they are gods and goddesses so they have higher powers than humans, nothing magical. gosh!
+Rosina Hauiti she's a Greek muse disguising herself as an Australian roller disco chick. The joke is that, as a Greek muse, she doesn't really understand Earthly things such as accents
He has a very beautiful voice. But I don't get her, the voice, or the frickin acting she's doing? What the heck? Terrible voice, terrible movements and weird stuff going on and she's funny looking. I know the show makes fun of the original movie (which is one of my faves of all time, cheesy as it is), but she's an idiot. ONJ was adorable and sweet as Kyra even though the movie was goofy.
Ben is exactly right. I saw this show on Broadway and it is a parody of the movie so she is supposed to over exaggerate the phrasing. I was not crazy about it but I don't call it bad.
Wow - parody or not - this is pretty terrible. Don't remake stuff if you can't do it better! This is almost offensive to those of us who've seen the original.
Not a remake. Parody is supposed to be comical, over done, exaggeration. It is not supposed to be done better. It is supposed to make fun of the original.
Cheyenne and Kerry have great chemistry and I just adore and love Kerry Butler so much.

I saw this live and it was one of the funnest live theater experiences I had in my life.
So Hot!!! :)
Great song!
All these hateful comments 😂 you guys have probably never seen this whole musical! it's hilarious!!!
I managed to see the musical (with the original broadway cast) online someone posted it on UA-cam and I loved watching it.
just saw the touring company yesterday. very fun show, music is great, and just very sweet. true no real substance or anything to take away but music stuck in your head, but just a fun time at the theatre.
When I die I want to come back as Cheyanne Jackson's cut off denim shorts!
I saw that in October 2007, I really loved it
I love this video!! :) my school is going to preform Xanadu in a week in a half and it really is a good show! I am one of the muses and I am going to enjoy every moment of the acting experience!!!
Cheyenne Jackson rules! He's the best!
I miss Xanadu! What an awesome show that was.. and I was there closing night which was double awesome!!!!
kerry is brilliant!
Yea I watched this before I went to see the musical in the theatre and it's really different! It's so much better when you see it on stage on Broadway. I was blown away..it was amazing. I couldn't stop laughing!
i love these 2!!

i love the way they sing this song,,,,where can i fine it
We loved the show at broadway

Like nails on a chalkboard. ONJ sang it so beautifully.
Saw what you will, but Cheyanne Jackson's voice is far better than Cliff Richard's.
Kerry Butler did such a great job. I loved her back in Hairspray. I must say: Whoopi Goldberg is the best xD
LOOK AT ME
Lol love Kerry
@lavalamp625 This was a GREAT show!!!
I never realized that you can see him taking off his shoes . . . HAH. Classy.
There is a trap door underneath, and people from wardrobe take off his sneakers, and put the skates on. It's cute as hell.
Love cheyenne ❤️

The girl is very funny,,,,, whats her name?! Pls!,,,, she is joking around and yet you can feel her singing talent somewhere
kerry butler
Thanks carolina =)
no prob
you make me feel so invincible i could go in to downtown LA with out a weapon
They did a great job on this song...She sounds like Olivia...
Damn, Cheyenne Jackson looks better in short shorts than most girls do...
I get it. It's actually a good spoof of Olivia - on many levels. Olivia and Gene were stars, the music was amazing. But the script was, um, lacking.
I just realized these little cutesy moves they have them doing are very Chenowethian, esp Wicked and some of Charlie Brown. I wonder if some of that physical comedy stuff was directly taken from her.
Omygosh is she trying to sound like Olivia Newton-John lol
@RemoLocke Ahhh you're right! I stand corrected! So much easier with a bit of camera work, eh?
the only thing I don't like about this is the phone booth. Is there or isn't there supposed to be glass in it? At some points they act like there is but then sonny just puts his arm through it at other points lol
they can def' sing, and chayenne looks good to boot. green with envy you are.
Today I learned that Xanadu is on Broadway.
It actually didn't close quickly compared to most shows these days. And I don't know, I'm quite a theatre snob and I adore this show. It was a good take on the film. Made it better actually. i got a kiss!
Cheyenne Jackson is my boyfriend. He doesn't know it, but he is.
No, he is me
At 2:57 you can see someone running in with the skates right infront of him just as he flicks his right shoe off.
The show is supposed to be a spoof of the movie her accent is not supposed to be perfect, AKA there is nothing serious about the show, thats why its so great! ;)
you obviously haven't seen the full musical because it's not making fun of the movie, it's making fun of itself. and it did make it better. There's a side plot and really talented actresses and singers added.
why is the audience not laughing? this shit is hysterical
@fatheranthony4pope
that was the point!! she is a greek muse trying to be in disguise as an australian named kira! its supposed to be a ridiculous accent!
Isn't that the guy from 30 Rock?
People seriously don't get that she's imitating Olivia and trying to be over the top because that's what the Broadway version was about? It's a tribute and a parody.

Well, it is a bit of camera work, but putting on roller skates in a phone booth. I about kill myself when I try to put them on on a park bench.
There's a lot of different ways to do it though...
Parody of a flop...I get it..
Good singers tacky acting..
Good good. 🚀🌝 Stonks
As an Australian, I am shocked and appalled at that accent.....
WE DON'T SOUND LIKE THAT!!! :'(
Krill & Toaster Adventures it's supposed to be a butchered accent she's going in disguise
Krill & Toaster Adventures that's the joke, I'm also Australian, and yeah it's cringey haha but that's the point
Not everything is about you or australians lol
I get that it's a parody, and I'm glad that it's a parody (or else it would be terrible), but I can't get into it because it seems so overly smug. Maybe actually seeing the show would change my mind. ^_^
@xenatikkanen This is a PARODY. The show is making fun of the movie.
And he's cheating on both of you with me...

+Donna Lynn YOU ARE NOT ALONE! This movie is my LIFE!! :D

1:20 HUH?????
ok now i get it so funny n cute hehe
I think I'll stick with ONJ and Cliff. Yikes
@ashleywool but the pla makes a gay sonny malone, look at his clothes!
@stephy7475 Cheyenne is always supposed to be gay...because he IS gay...but the character of Sonny Malone is not. :-D
was cheyene supposed to be gay on the play, totally different from the film?

if you've ever read the script, you'd know that it's SUPPOSED to be a crappy Australian accent. But obviously you haven't so stop.
LA County -- wall-to-wall autos and pollution
bruh
I'm sorry to break it to you but he's cheating on you with me...
@fatheranthony4pope The show is making fun of the movie...they're over playing it on purpose.
Dear God. ...any one surprised this closed rather quickly? Come on.. any one?
Is no one noticing her accent?? Can't understand wtf she's saying
I like the other one, but not as much as this one. This one's just cute when the other one's, you know, a little cheesy. This one's....SILLY. :]
I dont know what that is, but it isnt an aussie accent...
+Rosina Hauiti It's not supposed to be.
+Rosina Hauiti she's a Greek muse disguising herself as an Australian roller disco chick. The joke is that, as a Greek muse, she doesn't really understand Earthly things such as accents
+Singing Tutor Pro yeah, it is.
That's. The. Joke.
This is almost offensive to those of us who like this musical.
If this is what the Broadway version is like.... I hope to NEVER see it! What an insult to a cult classic!
He has a very beautiful voice. But I don't get her, the voice, or the frickin acting she's doing? What the heck? Terrible voice, terrible movements and weird stuff going on and she's funny looking. I can't watch this video without saying anything negative about it
Justin M. What do you mean it's hilarious and amazing 😂
did she inhale helium?
Seriously?
This was awful
Wish she could actually do an Australian accent.
Hmmm... Maybe the bad accent is part of the joke
Cringe
what a disgrace.
...sucks.
That girl's voice is excruciatingly annoying. They're both pretty bad, but my goodness... that girl takes the cake.
She was nominated for a Tony award for this role, it's meant to be a corny spoof of Olivia Newton John in the movie.
Ben is exactly right. I saw this show on Broadway and it is a parody of the movie so she is supposed to over exaggerate the phrasing. I was not crazy about it but I don't call it bad.
