History of Swinegate in Leeds

  • Swinegate is located on the southern edge of Leeds city centre and connects Leeds Bridge, Call Lane and Briggate at its eastern end with Mill Hiil and Bishopgate Street at its western reaches. It is one of the oldest roads in the city and it is believed its name is derived from the pigs once herded along its route.
This is a video about hidden waterways and weirs, trains and trams and a place where the Beatles and Elton John once played gigs. Swinegate. An unusual name but a really interesting district of Leeds with an incredible past closely linked to the history of the city. Today, as in the past, it is home to a wide collection of commercial properties, but the area has witnessed massive changes since it was originally used by the residents of Leeds, many centuries before.

Wonderful! I remember walking past the old tram depot with my mum, and her telling me she saw the Beatles play there and Dad saw Buddy Holly :-) It was such a huge dominant and impressive building, such a shame they pulled it, but lovely to see that over the road is still in tact and looking splendid. It's bringing back many fond memories of my youth, I used to love shopping for second hand clothes down the dark arches (the smell of joysticks was wonderful!) and there was a stall selling incredible didgeridoos and huge bongo drums. Oh and many a lovely evening having pre "going out out" drinks at Blayd's bar. Such lovely folk in there. Absolutely love your vids of my home town. Greetings from Haarlem over in the Netherlands:)

I haven't lived in Leeds for over 30 years now but I remember the Dark Arches vividly. They had a bad reputation in the 50s but over the next 10/15 years they became a good place to go for bathrooms and, even later, a good place to take my children - they loved the noise of the Aire and there were many 'different' shops. I remember also going to the Queen's Hall for the Ideal Homes Exhibition, though I didn't go to the gigs as I preferred The Odean on the Headrow for that.

Saw the Beatles at Queens Hall in 62 when they were the support group to Mr. Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band.

My earliest memories of Queen's Hall included the 'dancing waters' fountains and the annual 'Christmas Feast'. I also attended a 'Psychics Fair' in the early 1980s. Concerts I remeber attending in 1980s were Whitesnake; and an all-nighter where Hawkwind was the headline band, followed by Roxy Music and Elkie Brookes.

Thanks for sharing your memories Geoffas, I only went to the car auction in there. There were some great concerts I wish I had attended there.

Both Billy Smarts and Chippendales used to use the Queens Hall for their circuses. Concordia Street running off Swinegate was for many years where you would catch the football specials up to Elland Road.

It seem so far away to see photos from the 40s in my city but it scares me that my early memories are now just as far away.

Great video. Saw Thin Lizzy at the Queen's Hall in 1980. My friend saw Jimmi Hendrix there circa 1968.

Thanks Ian. I didn't get to see a band there, but I did go to the car auctions a couple of times. Some famous people played there.

10:53 I remember the tram depot, and when it became the Queen's Hall. I remember visiting an Ideal Homes Exhibitionheld there in the early '60s.There was also a travelling zoo that visited (not a circus), and I remember a using climbing wall in there.

Hence the saying 'on tenterhooks' where the fabric was stretched tightly over the tenter frame and attached by hooks.

i went to see "the Rolling Stones" At the Queens hall on the 12th of July Sunday 1964 also on the bill was "Lulu and the Luvers" the seats were priced between 4/6 and 10/6 in old money or in todays money 22.5 pence and 52.5 pence i was on the third row from the stage in the 10/6 seats It was a round stage that turned slowly round so everybody got a good view. I also so remember going to something like an ideal home exhibition and the actress who played Emily Nugent on coronation street was there.
