  • The attempted coup against Turkish President Erdoğan might have failed, but plenty of problems still await him.
Update 7/19/2016: Since publishing, more than 30,000 people have been purged from the Turkish military. Moreover, 15,000 employees of the Turkish education ministry have been suspended along with 21,000 teachers for their suspected links to the failed military coup.

I am from Turkey and I do not support the government. In fact, Erdogan is one of the few individuals in the world that I think I literally feel hatred towards. Yet military coup is not a solution. Turkey is not Egypt, we have a democratic tradition and if Erdogan needs to go, he will go through ballot box not through some punk ass people in the uniforms.

Turkish elections have been monitored by independent (and opposition) NGOs as well as EU. even the fiercely critical opposition NGOs remarked that elections were open and fair. so he has not cheated. and he has a really loyal voting base, which is at least 40 percent of Turkey. this does not mean Erdogan is truly democratic leader though, he has been trying to suppress internal voices like Putin...Once Erdogan does not allow transparency in election process, then all other anti-democratic means would become meaningful. but until then, if we want democracy, we need to live with him.
We have just had an election, the next one in 2019.

I'm DISAPPOINTED . While the video should explain the COUP it just talked about it in the first few mins then it took a totally different direction; talking 90% about Erdogan .
the coup started by BOMBING the Parliament and ended with killing police and civilians with tank and aircraft missiles!! like. 200 dead with most civilians and two soldiers ( but for VOX that is not worth mentioning I guess) . I live in turkey and assure you that the failed coup is not about erdogan more than its about Turkey. I've been in the streets and sow anti-government as much as pro-government peacefully rejecting the coup. Turkish people showed everyone how to end a coup. i ask u Just imagine the media if the coup attempt was done in France or America.

+João Baptista it paints Ataturk as democratic figure when he actually was a dictator who oppressed any form of opposition with the most brutal forces. and the video also promotes the idea of the army protecting secularism which is unbelievable!, it did not mention the dark history Turkey has with military coups that is full of executions and jailing of politicians. it also ignored the Turkish people stand on the coup and how thousands of Turkish people demonstrated against the coup and where met by tanks F16 bombing.
It also ignored the fact that the coup's failure was mainly due to the failed assassination attempt on Erdogan's life
if I didn't know anything about Turkey and watched this video I might have wished the coup had succeeded, but knowing what I know, I would choose the "democratically elected" authoritarian Erdogan over a military coup, I've seen what the coup did to Egypt, ans saw how it committed the worst massacre in recent history.
It seems to me that Europeans are more concerned with Erdogan growing authoritarian than they are concerned with the coup itself, which is not completely failed yet btw.
I can't believe that I have to explain that coup is bad and democracy is good in 2016!!!!

Erdogan already killed democracy. Democracy isn't just Winning an election it's a complex set of rules and values that Turkey has lost since Erdogan took charge...

      "Hitler was democratically elected"
I was kind of expecting that stupid and ignorant comment.
First of all Hitler ""lost"" the 1932 election to Hindenburg and was later ""appointed"" chancellor.
Secondly, he formed paramilitary groups to oppress demonstrations against him.
Then he used emergency powers to closedown newspapers and dismantle other parties, he also executed many of his political opponents and cancelled the election after the death of Hindenburg in 1934.
Now I am not a fan of Erdogan, but that doesn't blind me from seeing how stupid this comparison. It is true that Erdogan is increasingly authoritarian but he didn't cancel any election, in fact he can still be overthrown through election, and he didn't close down any media outlets, in fact his face time speech was on a channel that openly opposes him, and he didn't dismantle any political parties, in fact all the Turkish parties strongly opposed the coup.
So, No, democracy is not dead in Turkey , and Erdogan, as authoritarian as he is, isn't Hitler.

Lets get real folks. The said arrests before the attempted coup was limited and was done by the Turkish judgement which was supported by Turkish public. The said arrests after the attempted coup is linked to terrorist who staged the attempted coup. Some of you simply and friendly said ''Why do you support Erdogan's party?'' and this part for him as an answer.
Because we are living in Turkey and we do know the current and past condition of Turkey from first hand we are the ones who has a right to speak about Turkey and its diplomacies in reality. We do support Erdogan and its party for the adjustments in education, medicine, economics, military, transportation and etc. Basically its called ''common sense''. And I for one never voted for Erdogan and his party. I wanted to in the last elections (I was allowed to vote for 3 times by now) but I could not because we moved and did not report it before the elections. Why I did not vote for him or his party before was simple, because it was not needed. He was already winning without hesitation and did not need the support of people who has some doubts about every political partys in Turkey. After time passed and Turkey got bigger influence on Worlds politics, and cracked voices raised against him just because they can do anything without respecting any lines and Erdogan is in need of the support of public not for elections -because come on be realistic, he will win without the ones with doubt anyway- but to demonstrate power and unity for Turkeys neighbours to trust Turkey and its stability. So I would start to vote if I could in last elections in the light of education and new information that I got and the mindset and mental stability that comes with age but I could not. But I will start as soon as possible. And for an example for a development, 15-20 years ago we would have to wait in line for at least 10 hours on our feet does not matter the circumstances of us to get a ''pill'' with our own money. Last year I got a surgery without waiting in any line and without paying a god damn dime. Every single thing was covered by the government. Public of Turkey is lazy about anything that is not ''real''. Let me explain what I meant. People did not speak up for Erdogan unless they are forced psychologically by opposing minds. They just went to the elections and destroyed any opposing ideas with their votes which does the real impact. They did not went to the streets until the attempted coup where they could die and they did die for their country because it would do the real impact, it would do impact on ''reality''. Public of Turkey does not like social media because it is not reality it is an ''illusion of reality'' which is known by everyone and heavily criticised by shows like Mr. Robot. So sick minds like to live in the illusion and yell about anything they don't know or they don't like but in reality more than half of the public supports Erdogan formally and 80 percent of the public went to the streets to protect democracy and government without hesitation and Erdogan is not an Islamist he is secular, he is a muslim and he is Turk and he would protect these values in any circumcistances because the public will support him. Actually it is revealed that the ones who staged the attempted coup was trying to bring Sharia and Gulen to country as a caliph. As I said Turkish public is lazy about what is not real and what is not real is the opinion of people who is on youtube, what is real is the formal opinions of countries and every single one of them with the elected government except Egypt. You know why but I will say it cause I already started to write long reads. They are with the coup because who is in charge in Egypt came with a coup that condemned by Egyptians. I am a member of Turkish Republic and I am lazy about what is not real because -come on man, please I am exhausted- it is not real. So I will not explain things any further unless it is asked nicely and sanely. My english can be bad because I did not need to practice it in months, don't mind it mind the idea. Be safe folks.

It may. Europe really wants it to hold on to the 3 million Syrian refugees it has in its borders. The current refugee crisis in Europe unloved about a million Refugees. Europe can only put so much pressure on turkey before it threatens to release its migrants.

Considering all 28 countries need to agree for these kind of decisions, it's very, very unlikely. And that's without counting the strict requirements that countries wishing to join the EU need to fulfill. Such as respecting human rights. Basically: No chance they should join.

It is crystal clear that this coup was staged by F. Gulen, who is an Islamic cleric with ambitions very similar to Ayatollah Humaini of Iran. He's been illegally planting his "abi"s (mollas) inside the educational system, the military, police and the judiciary for over 30 years, which enabled him to commit numerous crimes like the Ergenekon plot and lastly this attempted coup. Had the coup been successful, he would establish a totalitarian state not much different than the Humaini regime. The county would apparently be governed by the elected politians but in reality it would be governed by his "abi"s who are loyal to him. So this victory of the people saved both democracy and secularism. Erdogan's democracy is not flawless, but the worst democracy is better than the best Islamic dictatorship. Peace at home council is a joke, by the way. He used that name to hide his involvement and gain sympathy from the secularist Turks, who simply did not bite into that trap.

The coup was done by Fethullah Gülen and his supporters in the military, he's a corrupt and important politic and religious figure in Turkey, that has cursed the country for tens of years, he was supported by the US all the time, and was incredibly powerful, having control of the media and as we can see from the coup, even the military... around 2010 Erdogan and Fethullah's relationship decreased, their friendship turned into rivalry, the coup was Fethullah's last attempt to not lose his influence over Turkey.
