I find it very interesting that Kenin didn't lose any points or games for cussing out the umpire???? Serena lost a whole game just for calling the umpire a fraud/liar, at the US Open.
Because there's an escalating penalty scale in tennis for repeated infractions. First you get a warning, which Kenin got. Then you lose a point, then a game, then the match. In the US Open match with Osaka, Serena was given a warning, then lost a point for the next infraction, then a game for the next. The ump in the Serena match was full of it, though. It was absurd to penalize her for calling him a thief after he took a point from her. "Thief" is an extremely tame criticism - not even close to an obscenity, and it was certainly an understandable response to the point penalty which she felt was unjustified. I didn't like Serena's behavior that day, but the ump's reaction to being called a thief will go down as one of the lamest penalties ever given in tennis.

I think Sofia, for her long term success, should explore a change of coaches. I saw her play live in San Diego last year and she is clearly very talented, but there seems to be a continued underlying aggravation which, in the short term, can be a great motivator, but can really be a grind. She is mature enough to go to the next level of continued success, injuries notwithstanding. I thought the supervisor’s demeanor was very unprofessional. Thank you for the video!
Gross incompetence displayed by the umpire AND the supervisor for taking the egregious, overt, disrespect. This match should have ended right then and there.
Actually, the umpire did what she was supposed to. The player said that it was too slick and unsafe. the chair umpire went and checked, deemed it safe, and made the ruling. The player has the right to appeal the decision to the supervisor, which she did. When the supervisor made the same ruling and told her she'd be defaulted if she didn't play, she played. Everything was by the book. The player had every right to be upset, especially when they had to suspend the match 2 points later. It's her career on the line, not the umpires.
in the end , it's the players call weather they think it's not right to play , since they are the ones who could sustain injuries that could render them out of the sport for good , so you lose a match if you keep your health. play was stopped a few minutes later so who was right?. i particularly like how the chair umpire got out her chair and walked over to where the player would be standing on the serve line and moved one foot around for a sec. then declared it was o.k. , you can't get a "feel" from the court like that , looks like it was all about her ego, not the players.

very professional, and a show of real sportspersonship.
wow, how can being disrespectful to officials be justified? even if you were right and wanted to challenge a situation, you need to be polite, given that you are a pro. What would've happened if the umpire cussed back???
Double standards lol. Always wondered why umpires can't disqualify players for such behaviour
Strange ...a lot amateur athletes would love playing in a world class tennis tournament like this even with a little rain or weather problems ......some people never learn where they are in life......taking it for granted......
CMBMM
douche
Amateurs can't play there
Unless they slip and injure themselves because of the rain, which is of course the risk and why she was arguing and later validated.
I am with Kenin on this issue. She is probably worried about the potential risk for injury on a wet court. This her career, she is under a lot of pressure. The supervisor seemed pretty dismissive of her concerns, so I can understand why she got upset.
Obnoxious players don't get favorable judgement calls. That seems to escape Kenin. She seems mentally challenged.
What possible benefit is there in singing after every shot?
8:33 Aryna had three championship points, not just two. Also, it's extremely unlikely that Iga and Sonia will face each other in this tournament because they're on opposite sides of the draw, and Sonia has some tough opponents lined up if she keeps winning
I thought the same. Doing videos here you should know the stats better.
my heart strings are being tugged at. this is emotional. thank-you!
She should've been disqualified
She know how her footing is on the court and they had to stop it anyway they are ridiculous at these tournaments. Those players shouldn't have to be forced to play if they think its unsafe and it's easy for the umpire and director to say it's ok to continue they're not out there, it's not like the lines are dirt they are plastic strips nailed in the ground.
She had the option to not play. I like Kenin, but sometimes players can act like divas.
yeaaah tennis is a sooo dangerous sport !!
But the opponent didn’t say it was too slippery, only Kenin said it. Ump will stop if both players say it’s not safe.
Sofia is a good girl. She is absolutely right. Those greedy organisers should respect the safety of the players.
It was not raining at all, a few drops of rain that wasn't even wetting the court or lines .... I was there. Referee and opponent were caught by surprise by her leaving the court ... So just the usual drama queen.
A good girl?? 😂😂
100% bro
She was being a brat 😂
Such
rude behaviour on Kenin part?
@2:54 min. She seems to be handling the WET court quite nicely. Why do you think there are many clay courts in Central Europe? BECAUSE of the frequent rains.
This is a perfect example of a modern athlete.
No, it isn't. This is a perfect example of a spoiled twit. Modern athlete example - Aaron Judge. You should try actually watching sports before making ridiculous claims for the sake of a few thumbs-ups.
Swear at me once and you are gone. Lodging a complaint is understandable but cussing me not a chance.
She was right about the rain. And she is the better player.
Of course, and was she right to say fuck you to the umpire? Stop playing without the umpire's approval?
I want to hope you're not American, otherwise explain everything... 😂😂
Iga vs Kerber will be an interesting one. Kerber is hungry to win and beat Iga after Iga defeated her twice this year. Iga is looking so good and strong to win the title
Wonder if Sofia would have not wanted to play on if she had been a break up, instead of being a break down.
The court was not in good condition. It was too slippery . She was nor the only one complaining. Novak Djokovic did complain as well.
If Djokovic complains they would listen to him asap. There are categories. 😂😂
Kenin is correct. She should use better language but the court clay was dangerous
It's the same court for both players, but only one spoilt brat is complaining!
I totally agree with Sophia Kenin!
@GrayCrosby as they were yours
Well, at least this chair umpire did call for the Supervisor. @CocoGauff asked an umpire for a Supervisor a few tournaments ago & he refused to call the Supervisor.

Maria 😂😂😂, the same one who told the French crowd “Allen up your f***ing ass” 😂😂 and then yelled “Check her blood pressure” to Ana Ivanovic.
Sofia Kenin was pointing out what she knows that the courts were unplayable, and then after Kenin won the point, NOW! they call the court unplayable because of the same rain as before. The rain did not stop, however Sofia Kenin should know that unfair calls by officials in sports do happen & she needs to concentrate on her game and not get distracted by noise & other peoples stupidity.
She's got to protect her health.
Yes, but how you communicate matters. Kenin's seeming mental issues are affecting her behaviour in court. Her behaviour is self-defeating. She is not getting favorable judgement calls. No way.

I've played on wet clay, you just glide across the court and save a lot of energy, but if you don't play on it a lot and you plant too fast, you can trip
I find it very interesting that Kenin didn't lose any points or games for cussing out the umpire???? Serena lost a whole game just for calling the umpire a fraud/liar, at the US Open.
"thief" was the word Serena used, not that it's any worse or better

That was a really well played point by both women, in the game after Sofia got up from her seat...it was going even, and then Sofia found the backhand.
Collins is amazing❤and i love her❤ 1:35
I don't know either of these women but if one feels strongly enough that it isn't safe and hasn't the confidence in the conditions she has the right to question the authorities. You can see both players slipping during play.
Having a crowd against her amd some of the negative comments here seem a juvenile response. Sure, we don't want people swearing all the time but we don't want corporate yes men either. We cannot have it both ways. Sport isn't about plastic smiles and pleasing people, leave that to the politicians. I'd rather see someone like her with passion and commitment. Being forced to play on and spoken to in the way she was, not by the umpire, i would have told him to stick it and walked out.
It always pisses me off the way these players, who are making massive paychecks, get to treat officials that are making a few hundred bucks.

Swearing at an umpire is unprofessional, she is a brat, her father should teach her manners besides tennis.
Also, to those people saying should be the players to decide if is to dangerous, if this was the case, the player will want to stop the game "because is dangerous" just because she is tired or loosing the game , and if the court will be really dangerous but she is winning then they will want to continue anyway. Players will use this rule to their advantage.
The umpire is not a random person from the street and knows about court conditions, players are not better than umpire to decide.

Nice focus with energy~
