That was excellent.
He laughed knowing that he wasn’t crazy and that he saved the world from ending. He was happy that he was chosen and that he knew with him dying everyone he loves and knows will be safe. He had a sense of relief and accomplishment. What a good death. Don’t forget the time when his girlfriend said what if you can go back in time And take all Hours of pain and darkness and replace it with something better. He knew at that time that he could do or say whatever he wants because he will either reset the time or create a black hole, he told her our conversation didn’t even happen he knew that she will forget. That’s why he spoke his mind to his teachers he knew they will forget about him he knew he won’t live. He’s like fuck it I’ll do and say what I want.

Awesome interpretation! I think he's laughing because everyone dies alone. He finds it funny how he did not want to die alone but he starts to understand what he has to do near the end on that cliff, so I think the laugh is a continuation. He knows he is going to die and that no one will remember the time in the tangent universe and he'll lose Gretchen - Donnie dies alone in the end, but its like his last "F You" to the world, just as his dad mentions. He gets the last laugh

Not questioning your theory but the tangent universe is created from the jet engine and frank, as soon as frank woke up Donnie and moved him outside it was created because he didn't die, at the end of the movie when the black hole starts the jet engine of his mothers plane is dragged through the portal which lands in his room and at the end he realises how to time travel and what he needs to do to save the universe, he then goes back to the start of the movie and lets himself be killed so that the world doesn't create a black whole, his mum and sisters plane doesn't go down and his girlfriend doesn't get run over

exactly to the point Explanation, as I've already read the Donnie darko Explanation in its website, which is exactly the same as you've told. but it always helps better to understand a movie by listening to its plot by someone else rather than reading it. so good work.
yaa there were some questions still knocking me like what causes the tangent universe to form, and what drives the people called manipulated living & manipulated dead to help Donnie fulfill his objective (i think maybe god is shown responsible for this because in the movie there were many scenes related to god) & yes still a little confused about why Donnie laughs at the end but yes the reason can be like stated in philosophy of time travel like after tangent universe successfully collapses some of it remember some instances of it in their dreams so that's why Donnie laughs at the end scene in tangent universe as well as in primary universe thinking of all the situations he have faced.
OVERALL AN EXCELLENT MOVIE AND AN EXCELLENT EXPLANATION AVAILABLE.

When darko asked frank why he's wearing that bunny suit, frank replied with, why are you wearing that man suit, it meant that you don't wear your body once your spirit has left it and darko has a sleepwalking problem, meaning his mind had already left his body while he was sleeping, and here is why i say donnie was the rabbit, cause when donnie asks frank what happened to his eye, frank replied with, I'm so sorry. I believe donnie had a out of body dream that night where he was the character he created and wrote about.

Frank is a real person in Donnie Darko's life, although he doesn't actually appear as Frank the Rabbit (in the tangent universe he appears as Frank the Rabbit). In this tangent universe there is a paradox and Frank is always with Donnie because he dies later in the story and travels back in time to help him.
Solid explanation. But why did Frank, in the beginning lure Donnie from his bed and not just let him die like he did in the end. It seems like doing the whole tangent universe thing is a waste of time. That’s the main thing I’m questioning. Basically, why did Donnie have to go to the alternate universe instead of just dying from the engine at the beginning of the film? Seems like a waste of time/purpose.
My theory on why Donnie is laughing and doesn't move to save his own life at the end:
I think this scene in the movie is a huge giveaway to the final scene at the end of the movie. It is a conversation that Donnie is having with the professor.
Donnie: Could these portals just appear anywhere, anytime?
Professor: I think that's highly unlikely, I think what you're thinking of is an act of (god)"
Donnie : "If God controls time then all time is pre-decided
Professor: "I'm not following you" (the professor is confused because he doesn't see the world he lives in as a tangent universe and is only following his own set path and not Donnie's.)
Donnie: Every living thing follows along a set path. And if you could see your path or channel, you could see into the future, right? Like that's a form of time travel.
Professor: Well you're contradicting yourself, if we were able to see our destinies manifest themselves visually, we would be given the choice to betray our chosen destiny. And the mere fact that this choice exist would bring all pre-determined destiny to an end. (Hint) (The professor is unknowingly being a source of the manipulative living)
Donnie: Not if you travel through God's channel (the tangent universe?)
The professor then proceeds to end the conversation with a horrible excuse that he could get fired.
At this point Donnie was looking for an escape goat so he wouldn't have to die but it only resulted in the teacher being confused and Donnie becoming agitated that he was wasn't given an answer
He would be contradicting himself with his choice. And "the mere fact that this choice exist would make all preformed destiny come to an end." I think this is the giveaway. Donnie could move but he would be contradicting himself because in the primary universe he is not supposed to see the future and the jet engine coming down on him because that would contradict with the norm of the primary universe. Seeing the future is not a power you are supposed to have in the primary universe. He is not supposed to be a controller of fate but rather a victim of it. That is the purpose of life and god's plan. So basically at this point Donnie is a contradiction just like the jet engine.
The only reason he survives in the tangent universe was because of Frank. If he were given the choice to betray his destiny/fate and move away from the impact zone of the jet engine that ultimately kills him at the end, he would be contradicting himself (therefore leading all preformed destiny to come to an end). I believe he knows that the jet engine is coming at the end but he knows not to move because he is aware that he has to conceal his fate through God's channel. I think that he was aware that he was going to die in the primary universe before he asked the Science teacher these absurd questions. Roberta Sparrow told Donnie "That every living creature dies alone". This obviously evoked a lot of fear and depression in Donnie as it were some kind of foreshadowing. I think At this point he figured out what his fate was and but was deciding if it is worth it to pursue it knowing he would have to die in the process. He's laughing at the end because he realizes his purpose was to be sent into the world as a Christ figure essentially, sacrificing him self to conceal his fate and to save the world from ending. He also knows that whatever happened in the tangent universe would also come to an end with the return of the jet engine to the primary .He has just accepted it at this point, or he doesn't know how to deal with it emotionally so he just. laughs hysterically. If you were given that form destiny it would be pretty absurd and funny. The line "If the sky were to open up, there would be no law, there would be no rule, there would only be your memories, the choices you've made, and the people you've touched. If this world were to end, it would only be you and Frank (what the therapist sees as something made up in Donnie's head). Also, I see Roberta Sparrow as someone that only existence in the tangent universe as a guided spiritual figure. She does look a little too old to be living haha.
"Dear Roberta Sparrow, I've reached you in your book, and there's so many things I need to ask you. Sometimes I'm afraid of what you might tell me. Sometimes I'm afraid you'll tell me that this is not a work of fiction. I can only hope that the answers will come to me in my sleep. I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief because there will be so much to look forward to."
A great monologue to end the story. This monologue kind of differs to my whole theory as it seems like he is saying that he is looking forward to meeting her in the primary universe (or an afterlife?). It's weird and confusing and I don't think the movies purpose was to have one right way to perceive the story. I think this monologue is when that kind of leaves it open to interpretation. Such a great movie and one of my all time favorites! Loved your video!
It could be that he didnt know the engine was coming at the end but I think they added the laughing in to leave it to the audience to interpret what that meant. He wasn't dreaming so he wouldn't have much recollection of the tangent universe right?

Your explanation is actually the same as that in the Director's Cut where we are shown excerpts of Roberta Sparrow's "The Philosophy of Time Travel". However, you are very articulate and was able to put it nicely. The main problem with the film's explanation is that everything that happened followed the "rules" in the book - about the tangent universe, the receiver, artefact, the manipulated living, the manipulated dead, etc. But who wrote the book and who decides on these "rules"? I believe the book didn't really exist and Roberta Sparrow was not a real person. Even if "Grandma Death" was a former "receiver', how on earth would she be able to know these "rules" and all those things about the characteristics of the tangent universe, manipulated dead, receiver, etc. that I mentioned above? Even if Donnie survived, he would not be able to write such a book either - he did not remember everything in the tangent universe. So it appeared that the book or in the Director's cut simply attempted to set up new "rules" to deal with ambiguities in the original theatrical cut. But following the "rules" of a nonexistent book that in turn was not based on any hard science or philosophy was not really an "explanation". It simply required all that happened to follow the rules in the book to the letter.
I think that the book was just an attempt to explain the causal relationship between the events in the story. The entire story is inspired, and it is in fact an unconscious attempt to explain the origin and mechanics of our universe, but the writer didn't have all of the pieces sorted out yet. That's okay, that's my job.

thanks really good explanation admittedly watched this late last night after watching the film on the horror channel. just wondered why the plane engine came back to the real universe and why Donnie died when he didn't need to
+Eddie g The plane didn't come back, it's the same plane both at the beginning and at the end of the film. The middle part in which Donnie stops it from crashing is a parallel universe. After the parallel universe has collapsed, everything in our normal universe (the one at the beginning of the film) starts back from where it had stopped. So the plane is the same one.
Instead Donnie doesn't really have to die so there isn't a real reason why he dies. Maybe to show ) would have happened or maybe just to give an easy ending to the film even without all the time travelling concept and so on :)

Alright, so two things I still don't understand: Why would the primary universe be stable if there are still two copies of the same jet engine (the one which is still attached to the plane and the other which fell from a wormhole)? Also, so the two people who were killed got sent back in time to trigger the events which resulted in their deaths in the first place? Doesn't that mean there's an infinite loop?

Ottima spiegazione ma non mi trovo ancora su dei punti: il 1° è che l'universo tangente leggendo il libro della Sparrow non sembrerebbe esistere di per sé ma si crea quando vi è una corruzione nella quarta dimensione.
2° Donnie portando il pezzo di Boeing nella dimensione primaria che come hai detto si è come dire messa in pausa crea a sua volta un paradosso perché ci troviamo con un oggetto doppione nello stesso spazio di un aereo che ancora deve crollare e che a questo punto con la morte di Donnie non sappiamo neanche se crollerà. But it's a paradox , if his job was to prevent the target universe engine from collapsing in the real world, then at the end of the movie, which jet engine collapsed on his house if he had already dealt with it, it would all be a cycle all over again ,where did the engine in the ending come from ?
Ramirro XD the jet engine that kills Donnie is the jet engine that falls off the plane of Donnie’s mother and sister in the tangent universe when they’re flying back from LA. The reason it doesn’t repeat in the primary universe is because Donnie’s mother and sister won’t be getting on that plane in the primary universe. In the tangent universe, they’re on the plane because of Donnie: if Donnie hadn’t have burnt down Jim Cunningham’s house and been arrested for kiddie porn, the dance coach Kitty wouldn’t have had to ask Rose (Donnie’s mom) to take the girls on the trip because she wouldn’t be fighting for Jim Cunningham. Therefore, since he died in the primary universe, none of that happened in that universe. I hope I helped you better understand the movie!

Jesus fucking Christ this movie is a spiritual assessment of some people's experience of schizophrenia, the time travel thing is a metaphor for the fact that he's willing to kill himself and laugh hysterically at his own death than to feel responsible for someone else's death.

Why would the formation of a tangent universe suddenly cancel because Donnie sent a jet engine 28 days back into the primary universe? If Donnie sent the jet engine back to the primary universe, where the weird duplication of another jet engine occurred, there should be three jet engines. One is the engine of the plane that flew over Donnie's house, the second is the one that was somehow duplicated and caused the tangent universe to form, the third is the one Donnie sent there from the tangent universe. So because Donnie sends a jet engine back to the primary universe, wouldn't that mean that another tangent universe would still be made because there a duplicate will still be formed in the primary universe. Basically meaning that the forming of a tangent universe would happen an infinite amount of times and it wouldn't be possible for the timeline of the primary universe to ever continue past the 28 days.
The tangent universe lasts 28 days, whether there is a jet engine or not. So it would have collapsed and disappeared anyway, whatever Donnie had done. The problem is that this universe is already unstable and adding a glitch of an extra jet engine makes it even more unstable, so when the 28 days expire it and it has to collapse, it could create a black hole that could potentially also destroy our primary universe. But the tangent universe wasn't created by the jet engine, it already existed. The jet engine is just a glitch during the creation.
When Donnie sends it back to his primary universe it crashes into his bedroom and so on. But the universe continues normally. So I think the only problem would be if a jet engine existed in a tangent universe which only lasts a limited amount of time and is already unstable.
That was the same question I had and don't feel the explanation given is adequate.

Non capisco bene la scena finale dove Darko spara a Frank, se era già morto e comunicava con lui da un altro universo che senso ha la scena dello sparo? Anche perchè nella realtà dove Donnie muore lui è vivo, quindi sono strettamente correlati, e posso pensare che Frank abbia voluto comunicare con Darko per chiudere l'universo temporaneo e tornare in vita, quindi per suo interesse personale. Chiedo scusa se non c'ho capito molto xD per il resto del discorso sei stata chiarissima!

Thank you so much it's a great explanation. you're very clear about the movie but still my mind going to that spot where it questions why tangent universe created and why only Donnie felt that, because of he have some health issues?
Thank you so much! :) The exact origin of a tangent universes is never really explained. We just know they are formed somehow, so in the film the tangent universe was already present before the beginning of all of the general plot.
Instead regarding Donnie, the living receiver is also a seemingly random person, presumably which was located in the point in which the tangent universe/glitch began.
The only extra feature that I could imagine is that people like Donnie or Roberta Sparrow (Grandma Death) could be rather open minded characters, with a particular inclination to questioning their reality and fulfilling their "duties" as living receivers.
Ex. I guess the school bullies would never be "picked" as living receivers :)

Hi! :) No, the tangent the tangent universe formed regardless of Frank.
When Frank woke Donnie up the tangent universe had already formed, he just saved him from dying in his bedroom.
We don't really know why a tangent universe forms, but when it does there are sometimes glitches. So an extra jet engine. And yes, if there hadn't been a glitch nothing would have happened.
But remember, it is not Frank that created all of this. He is just a character in these universes.
And Frank is not a really positive character because although he tried to help Donnie, he killed Gretchen.
But in reality Donnie chose to return to his own bed, Frank didn't force him. And he didn't really have to: if at the end of the film he had just stayed outside in the garden and watched the engine crash, nothing would have changed.
We don't know why Donnie chooses to die, maybe because he doesn't fear death or because Frank made his mental illness worsen or because he hated what he saw in the world (we hear him saying how he looks forward to death and so on). But if he had survived at the end, nothing would have changed: his death is not necessary to destroy the tangent universe.

I think that you made 77 cuts. The longest gap after cut 26. 26=God. Shortest gap after cut 38. 38=Death. At 4:20 you mentioned family and teachers. Jesus was the 42nd generation after Abraham.
After cut 24 we see the time on Donnie's arm. Time code =1:19. At cut 42 you mentioned "the living receiver".

The tangent universe always existed, and always will. It's only the portal that comes and goes. The "glitch in time" created the portal because a temporary gap in the density of the mass of the universe, a thin spot, kind of like a hole in the ozone layer, caused the tangent universe to lose vibrational sync with the primary universe.
Time is vibration. The vibration is energy pulsing in a sine wave. It has a positive crest, and an identical negative trough. Each of those , the crest and the trough, form identical universes in the mass of the original universe. 2 new universes from the mass of 1. What we call "The Big Bang". The 2 universes are exactly 180 degrees apart in space-time at all times.
At thin spots in the mass of the universe, the wave form collapses, because it needs a medium through which it vibrates. This happens all the time. Since the universe is mostly low density, i.e. "empty space", any effects (defects) are very short term and easily re-balanced, as the surrounding mass flows into the gap, like water, allowing the portal to collapse and the space-time continuum goes on with nary a change.
At very rare moments, a high density object appears in the very spot of the portal. It has to be moving very fast to allow it to enter a low density gap, because it's very presence fills the gap and collapses the portal.
The jet engine moved into the portal as the jet flew through the gap, which was just big enough to be filled by the engine. The jet flew into the portal in both universes, but it collapsed the instant that happened. It was open only long enough for the engine from the first universe to enter. The portal collapsed and tore the engine from the plane. The second engine, from the second jet, which followed at exactly 180 degress later on the space-time wave, was unaffected, because the portal collapsed just before it got there.
The presence of the jet engine in the wrong universe, and it's subsequent crashing into a house upset the balance of the universe, and altered the space time continuum, because it only crashed in 1 universe, not both like everything should happen.
So the 2 universes were no longer identical, and a solution had to come about to re-balance the universe into 2 identical waves 180 degrees apart. Donnie was the focal point of the solution because his death was the most significant change in the space time continuum.
Donnie died in the initial crash, but only in 1 universe. Donnie was alive in 1 universe and dead in the other. In order to balance the universes, he had to either be alive or dead in both. The choice of alive or dead, to be or not to be, so to speak, was his. He chose death so that Frank and Gretchen could live. His happiness at the end came from his relief from the guilt that he felt for causing their deaths.

@duderama I get some part from your explanation but couldn't understand fully. I'm confused about JET ENGINE. Engine falls on both the universe so what Donnie has done right in tangent universe? Plz explain logic only behind JET ENGINE. Thanks :)
