As a bass player for the last 20 years, primarily in the US, now live in the UK, this guy is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT correct in SO SO SO many of his comments. Its actually HARDER to play SLOW with feel than fast. I stumbled onto this video inadvertently but Scott, you are absolutely correct. Watch this cat, he GETS it! I am also someone who used to only slap in E (actually its usually harmonic Em, but I am nitpicking :). Slow and steady win the groove! WELL DONE Scott, whoever the hell you are. But you UNDERSTAND the fundamentals of good percussive bass! Bravo!

This was exactly the kind of lesson i was searching for. Groovy and steady ("slow") slapping! thanks for the work Scott!

Good points. Getting out of the key of E, and control challenge of slowing down. Another slap challenge is not playing in 4/4 all of the time, like 6/8 for example.

Finally, to show people the common MISTAKES made is a FAR better tool of instruction than saying "this is what you do...". Avoid the pitfalls, you clear the hurdle! I like and respect this bass player. Well done. Subscribed.

best thing about playing/being slap- practice without an amp is valid, rewarding and builds versatility

Scott as a guitar player for over 35 years, these have been some serious lessons. After all the bass is one cool and seriously interestingly rythm and lead instrument. It really has improved my chops as a guitarist and yes I am taking bass more seriously.

Very accurate statement! I would also add two more: too many pops TOGETHER with weak sounding slaps.

Nice groove, and a great help to learn how to slap, I noticed that in this video Scott talks about the consistent slap motion in the right hand but in other videos he talks about doing a thumb-slap-thumb pluck, which isn't consistent with that, I can feel that I'm missing something in there but I can't tell what.

Scott, you are awesome. Your personality and teaching style are fantastic. I have been a teacher/trainer for a looooong time,. If you have had no formal instructional training, (or even if you have) KUDOS to you.

I've never learned so much about bass guitar playing from any other UA-cam video. Period. It's funny; Scott's pace of presentation feels slow for the non-musical business but really works out when it comes to dealing with the music.

Great groove...shows that you don't need to use a million notes to sound good..thanks Scott

    1. Many of the classic funk joints, particularly those from the 70s, are in E. (due to the fact that most bassists were 4-stringers, back then!). That may be the reasons why a lot of folk subsequently slapped in that key! Now, a good practice that goes off of that "E groove" would be two Louis Johnson joints in G minor: "Stomp" and "Get On The Floor!"

Don't know how you do it, everything your playing sounds just amazing. Even if your just playing 2 notes. Thanks for trying to give something to us!!

also, I think most people who slap just think that the root-octave are the only slap notes available.

Nice vid! Slap bass is a feel. One of the hardest things to master on a bass. And there are multiple different feels to master.
