I always loved pearl jam and eddie, but this is the performance that for me turned him from an angst ridden adolescent into a beautiful grown up man. /salute to one of the most beautiful moments in rock n roll history.
this makes me cry for people killed, people struggling to survive, and most of all for the rest of us who take everything for granted. life is so very short, start practicing saying "I Love You" again and again.
Dedicated to my son, Joel, who battled ALS like a warrior among warriors, finally winning the battle and earning his wings October 17, 2015. I have wished for so long... How I wish for you today... Love you son ❤️❤️❤️
I remember seeing this with my family and couldn't wait for Ed, Neil and Mike to come on. It was an emosional night of tributes for sure but looking around the room when Long Road came on there wasn't a dry eye in the room. I always remember my Dad saying that it was one of the most beautiful songs he had ever heard. He couldn't believe it was from my favourite band given their 'Rock' tag at times and has since shown them so much respect.
i think its just beautiful... i cant imagine anyone else who can sing like eddie. when i have seen it for the first time i just couldnt shut my mouth it was like something has hit me:)
I remember when this aired. It was shortly after the 911 tragedy...I was still numb in disbelief...it was when I heard and saw THIS performance that I broke down and cried. These words will remain embedded in my heart and soul forever! Eddie, you make a difference because you make us all feel and think...thank you.
Yes, I've been looking for this for a while. In a way it wasn't a performance - he never looks at the camera. But his voice reflected the times - deep and resonant.
Agree - performance, in the sense of actually being there & doing what they do as a Tribute; very touching... As viewers we might take these guys art for granted, but I can't imagine how difficult it would be for them to do this... So gratitude to them for evocatively capturing a momentous Moment in Time... Thanx again for posting this. :)
Amazing - Thanks for posting & sharing, although for a horrible reason, something beautiful to remember what was good & unique... A lovely, poignant performance befitting such a dreadful event... I Love Eddie & Neil, 2 of the GOOD guys... :)
I remember where I was when I watched this on tv... I was cat-sitting for a coworker, and I was at her house, but there was bad reception on the tv! Thanks for posting it so I can see it without static.
Seeing this video takes me back to the first couple of weeks after 9/11. It seemed like everyone was numb with shock over what happened and took a long time for things to settle down. But we should remember 5/2/2011 which was the day we got Bin Ladin.
Eddie Vedder is perhaps the only singer that whenever I listen him with Late Sir Nusrat Fatih.........Eddie just had the upper hand. He is awesome awesome...........
It's probably been said before but the way they're facing opposite directions adds to how cool this is. Oh, and Mike McCreadey is also there -- he should get credit!
I did expect Neil Young to sing a lot more, than twelve words. On the other hand, I appreciate the number of twelve, for reasons that cannot be revealed as of yet. Said Bur-q-ua 12
@soulrebelroots amen to that! It seems like everything Eddie does turns to gold for me. When my ex left me "alive", "black", and "release" were (are) what kept me going. "just breathe" is what kept me going when i found out my mom had cancer. "even flow" is my jam when i wanna rock out, "indifference" is my song when im in a pensive mood, "yellow ledbetter" is the song i relax to, and "dirty frank" is for when i feel a bit silly and wanna dance! In short, No one gets me quite like Eddie
drama teacher: Clayton E. Liggett. He dedicated the song to him in the inner sleeve of the Merkinball record, the single this song appears on as a B-side to "I got Shit."
the look on his face and emotion captures that moment in history perfectly for most americans. while i try to avoid footage of the actual events that this was a tribute for, it can not be completely avoided, yet somehow after the passing of time i may have become slightly desensitized to the actual footage.. but this performance brings you back to just how helpless and confusing of a time it was...
Neil and PJ need to tour together again (and play together!), I'd kill to see that. I love them both separately, but together they are incredible - see the video of them performing Rockin' In The Free World together for proof.
@chickenjojo - agreed, and you don't have to even say it, just practice it in actions. You can do that to friends, family, and even strangers. What a great place it would be to build love and trust amongst all men.
For me it is like building a house A song should have some sort of fundament and then very interesting design both on the inside and outside. For me a song like this is like having shelter made by cardboard. It works but you get fed up up after living in it for to long.
I always loved pearl jam and eddie, but this is the performance that for me turned him from an angst ridden adolescent into a beautiful grown up man. /salute to one of the most beautiful moments in rock n roll history.
If I had to name a musician who could sing the story of my life it would be Eddie Vedder. Modern day poet.
His song and his voice capture the darkness, the emptiness and the pain of losing a loved one (in any situation).
this makes me cry for people killed, people struggling to survive, and most of all for the rest of us who take everything for granted.

He is truly free now.
Great song for this particular occasion. I remember watching this almost 9 years ago... God bless all those who died on 9/11
"And the sun is setting...the sun will rise another day."....that's a powerful metaphor, love that one.
I remember seeing this with my family and couldn't wait for Ed, Neil and Mike to come on. His voice is like pure Silk,it vibrates through my Soul!
i think its just beautiful... i cant imagine anyone else who can sing like eddie. when i have seen it for the first time i just couldnt shut my mouth it was like something has hit me:)
i watch this every year.
Wow iam crying i love Eds sincere singing & of course Mr Soul Neil Young. Awesome......
Eddie,
every week I have to hear this song
His voice is so good he doesn't even need lyrics, yet his lyrics are so good :)
Thank you Eddie and Neil !! so great ! thanks for posting!

Yes, I've been looking for this for a while. In a way it wasn't a performance - he never looks at the camera. But his voice reflected the times - deep and resonant.

There is no other way to put it.. Eddie is one of a kind, no one like him thank goodness... one amazing man!

Two of the best songwrites ever. Almost like father and son............
I saw them in 2009 and they opened with this, it was amazing.

Excellent!!!!!!!
his version with Nusret Fatih is also very amazing and but overall he is always awesome. "There is not need to say good bye"
My two all time favourite singer songwriters Love & Light
La voix d eddie. Le talent de neil. Superbe chanson.
Eddie Vedder is perhaps the only singer that whenever I listen him with Late Sir Nusrat Fatih.........Eddie just had the upper hand. He is awesome awesome...........

Neil Young And Eddie Vedder YEAH!!!
Magical!
It's probably been said before but the way they're facing opposite directions adds to how cool this is.

I have wished for so long.....
How I wish for you today....
Goosebumps, all over my body
You're right Kenny. If you search for Long Road San Diego 2006 you can hear Eddie tell the story.
This was right after 9/11. A tribute to OUR heroes. Remember???......
I did expect Neil Young to sing a lot more, than twelve words.
On the other hand, I appreciate the number of twelve, for reasons that cannot be revealed as of yet.

The best song
man, eddie looks great in this.
This song was originally written about one of Eddies teachers and mentors in school who passed away.
...wie ich mir dich hier her wünschte....
when I hear Eddie sing, I can feel that everything is better
Touching!

Two worthy spokesmen for Americana.

Man, Eddie hangs with the right crowd!

I love eddie vedder because is a simple man,
Neil and PJ need to tour together again (and play together!), I'd kill to see that.
I love them both separately, but together they are incredible - see the video of them performing Rockin' In The Free World together for proof.

For me it is like building a house A song should have some sort of fundament and then very interesting design both on the inside and outside.
For me a song like this is like having shelter made by cardboard.
It works but you get fed up up after living in it for to long.
TFOR THE HEROES
oh ok..tty for the info..
It's on DVD
Neil does look a little funny rocking back and forth quickly during a slow song
